Dear Mr. Brown, thank you for the software. It is beautiful, easy to use and has many possibilities. I only have one question. Can it track more than one object, two or more mass points?
Great video! But I was wondering if you could use tracker in a 3d space. With an x-y-z or just x-z, so that you can see the position of the ball horizontally and in depth.
@@trackervideotool Well if you use two cameras shooting at same time at 90° you are able to reconstruct somehow (with some extra work from some external scripts). Thank you for the software i use it with my students in generaly physics courses at engineering. So useful!!!
@@goandlearn I’m pleased to hear you have been able to get 3D data from Tracker using 2 cameras. Can you tell us more about your external code that enables this?
Really great software and HUGE thanks for building this. I am wondering if I can auto-track the goniometer- having trouble figuring this out. Application is tracking real-time joint angles for biomechanics application.
I've been contacted by several researchers using it for biomechanics studies, so I'm sure it can be done. You'll need good videos and you should probably put high-contrast markers on the ends and vertex of the goniometer. Not real time, though.
@@leeskinner4809 Sorry, I don't know of any tutorials specific to biomechanics. There are probably some associated with university biomechanics courses that use Tracker (and I know there are some) but they would have to be posted by the professor.
Hi I am tracking a cart rolling along a track. Everything is fine except for the fact the 't' column, which I can only assume is time in seconds does not match up to the actual time. My current problem is that the 't' column indicates it takes a little bit over 2 seconds for the cart to roll to the end when in reality (using the original footage and a stopwatch) it takes around 8 seconds
+ghrafkly Take a look at the Clip Settings (5th button on the toolbar) and check the frame rate and/or frame dt. If you know the frame rate of your camera and the clip settings don't agree then go ahead and enter the correct frame rate or frame dt in the setting field. Another thing to watch for is videos from phones, which may vary in frame rate (and may not even have a constant frame rate in some situations). Finally, if you are playing the video in Tracker it will always play slower than the true speed (because it has to convert video frames to Java images for analysis)--could this be what you mean by "original footage and stopwatch"?
This software is really easy, but do you know how to use tracking to after that apply some emoticon or any image. For example I wanna track the ball but after that i wanna use position points to appply on them for example mini car or something.
+Cataratas Racing Team FSAE Formula SAE Is the paper rotating? If so, track the center of mass. If not, you can track any corner of the paper. BTW I'm not sure what you mean by regimented.
Hello I am doing a little project where I have put manually 4 mass points one at the time just so we can show of the center of mass. I was wondering if there is a way to show of ALL the positions that Center of Mass take. I have to take a screen capture of that specific trail but I don't know how to highlight all positions.
Hi Doug, How does one measure the distance travelled on the horizontal plane by an animal if the video is taken directly overhead? Also, is the velocity magnitude parameter based on the velocity on both the x and y planes? This software is very useful, thank you very much for this.
Yes the v magnitude is based on both x and y directions. To get the total distance traveled you need the sum of the distances taken in each step. You'll have to export the x and y position data to a spreadsheet to do that. Then for each step, find the distance traveled since the last step (square root of sum of squares of x-difference and y-difference) and add them up. Hope this helps.
+Douglas Brown Hi Doug, Thank you very much for getting back to me on this --- much appreciated. And yes, this is definitely very helpful as it clarifies uncertainties that I have. Thank you very much for your time. Keep up the good work :)
+Douglas Brown Hi again Doug, A further question: is it also correct to calculate the distance geometrically, i.e. by calculating the area under the the velocity vs. time graph, as this is easily done using tracker? Thanks.
Sure, that's probably a better way--certainly easier! The two methods may give slightly different results but the difference should not be significant. Good thinking!
You certainly can manually. If autotracking the changing orientation of the vehicle might be tricky but you should be able to do it with multiple key frames.
@@trackervideotool Thank you, it's a bit hard for the program to do it since as the bubbles ascend there are lines from the tube markings. Have you thought of mixing some MAchine learning so it knows to aproximate positions when the object is occluded for a bit? Based on previous movement data, that would be even better. I managed to fix the occluded sections tracking by hand but that means I can't track many bubbles, no time haha.
Hey Doug, Due to wide angle distortion i am having troubles measuring the correct distance in my video analysis. In the video have a rope which is 50 feet long, i measured 10 feet on a rope and added it on my calibration stick as my reference scale. Now when i measure 40 feet by using tape measure it says it is 33.08 and have 18.3% error. I have removed fish eye distortion. Do you have any suggestion as in how can i remove wide angle distortion?
The only thing I can think of is to adjust your fisheye distortion settings. Maybe you can use these known lengths to "calibrate" the fisheye settings--just adjust the settings until the tape measure gives the right length.
Sorry sir, I have a problem with a process after I click shift on my object. It doesn't have a “template” and “match” on my tap. I can not click “search” and do auto tracker. My version is “Traker 5.1.5”. Could you help me to solve it, I must use it for my lab😭😭😭
Dear Mr. Brown, I'm currently planning on using Tracker for the analysis of bouncing capsules, having seen how effective and intuitive it is for other applications. I just wanted to ask whether Tracker can auto-track spinning edges, where the RGB values within the search area are similar for every frame but the pixels are rotated by a certain amount. Thanks.
Sorry, Tracker is not good at autotracking things that spin. I have thought about adding that ability but it would slow down the process considerably, so that feature will not be added any time soon.
hi,may i know what is the unit use by the graph in tracker? i have track the motion of pendulum but the graph show the max acceleration is 1E4? i not understand about it.
You probably need to calibrate the video. See physlets.org/tracker/help/coords.html When you calibrate you decide the units: if you calibrate in meters, meters are used in all plots, tables, etc.
Hello Douglas, I have recorded a experiment using two camera's one perpendicular to the plane and another one at an angle. (Experiment was throwing a ball in the air projectile motion). How can i compare the results of these video's? Both video's should yield same results as we analyzing the same experiment. And is there a way to analyse a video at an angle? all the help videos on tracker available with the camera normal to the plane.
Anand, for the video taken at an angle you can apply a Perspective Filter (Video|Filters|New|Perspective) that corrects the distortion. Look at the Video Filters section of Tracker help for more info.

You have to control-shift-click to create a key frame for the autotracker.
I tried to autotrack on the OS X version but I couldn't because the program didn't create any key frame or template.
come back in 2020 it works now (shift-command not shift-control for mac btw)
