One of the best sharpening videos I've seen. It's apparent that you've given a lot of thought to the physics/mechanics of producing a consistently sharp and even blade. I learned a lot.
A belt mister is an easy modification to guarantee you don't remove temper. If you move to a felt or paper wheel for deburr, be sure to slot it for cooling on a half speed grinder. Rock Hard Felt on a Tormek T8 or T4 with diamond compound is great on Magnacut for deburr honing and no danger of detemper. Great Knives! I am really impressed! Ceramic belts with a mister work wonders on Magnacut.
Great video, TJ. Thanks for sharing your setup. You’re the first blade smith I’ve seen, besides myself, that sharpens your knives before handles. I’m working on the third generation of my bevel grinding/sharpening jig right now and it’s turning out awesome. As a guy with CNC experience, I’d value your input if you’re up for it.
Great video and a very impressive design! I just ordered the Crkt version for EDC. I would love to see a horizontal carry option for the kydex sheath! I find myself using my EDC for food prep more and more, and this design looks almost Perfect for me! I’m always driving and need a carry option that is seatbelt friendly as well as concealable. I Love supporting the smaller made in USA businesses.👍🇺🇸💜
I am going to get one as soon as I go back to work. Question though. I know you do the green sara coat. Could you Acid etch it and then sara coat it then stone wash it. It makes the sickest looking finish. I call it Apoc Green.
Thanks for the very informative video TJ! Just got one of the 3 Overlands you did so appreciate the effort you put in to make your craft so professional…Merry Xmas!
Hi, new subscriber, great channel! @Gideonstactical did a a very comprehensive review on your Overland. Fits my needs and likes to a tee so when my budget frees up next month, I plan on ordering one. Two quick questions, where in terms of fullness in the hand would you place the grip, say in the medium to full range? My hands are about the same size as yours and I would be using the knife for food prep? Also, I don't have your type of equipment and sharpen freehand. Any tips for maintaining your bevels freehand, or just go slow and careful? Thanks, looking forward to next month and may have some questions before about your recommendation on G10 vs Micarta for food prep.
Ordered a custom off your shop. Managed to get a smaller magnacut blade from DCC. Looking forward to having one in a more capable size for edc. Cool vid. Agree with preferring a toothy edge. Mirror is overrated. Like the wd40 tip, scratched my spartan harsey folder 3.25 wiping it after sharpening.
Awesome video man, love that little jig you've got setup. Cool tip with the WD-40 as well! I've been meaning to use it to clean residue off my blades, heard it works like a charm
Surprisingly I sliced cheddar cheese with mine and left the film on it overnight. The next morning when I cleaned it up it had rust pits developing all over the blade that are not polishing off. Also I used a sharpie marker on it when sharpening and it seems to have seeped into the finish and is still visible after using alcohol, thinner, etc to remove it. Any ideas?
I believe you’re over thinking your process. A knife guy will fix any problems and a non knife guy will live with whatever he/she receives. Do your best for a good product and the majority will be happy.
You should wear safety glasses when you grind. Your eyes can’t be replaced. Keep up the good work 👍 I hope to purchase one in the future 👍😎👍🇺🇸🇺🇸

Just picked up an overland on ebay and in love. The review critiques are fair but still a work of art.
Like the shape of its blade! Looks very versatile: master of many tasks.
Beautiful craftsmanship. I have an outland and it goes into the field with me everyday. Thanks TJ.
Great explanation of each phase of the process. I appreciate the why of each step.
I ordered one, also a worksharp. That knife shape is intriguing.

Solid techniques. Valuable info here.
I love your overland design. I want one of those fixed blades
Great way to maintain a standard of consistency, can't wait to receive mine!
Would be interested to see how you sharpen the lost trail, especially with the big belly it has
I'm in love with the knife. Bless your hands!!
Thank you
This is some good stuff right here, any plans for an XL version 😊
It woulb be great if you could do all your grinding wet. Constant stream of cooland helps a lot to keep the temperature low.
Can't wait to get my hands on one later this year!
Hi TJ! Just ordered your knife. Super excited to get the Overland. Greetings from Kodiak Alaska!
what a great tip w WD40. I've been just trying to wipe it off or use a clean buffing wheel it to clear up which works but super time consuming.
I am going to get one as soon as I go back to work. Question though. I know you do the green sara coat. Could you Acid etch it and then sara coat it then stone wash it. It makes the sickest looking finish. I call it Apoc Green.
Very impressive and really helpful. Thanks!

Fantastic design, can’t wait to pick one up! Keep up the great work sir.
Very very educational. Loved it.

Great video!
Can you make a video that breaks down your cost and time to make a knife?

Great design TJ! Subscriber #500.
What were you painting??
You know TJ is the real deal because he is wearing a bandaid. I am buying one of his Confidantes.
Next week I'll get Confindante.

And yes, it’s a Magnacut Overland.
My knife is on the way
it gets that sharp with 400 grit belt?! 🤯
Yep! I actually prefer 400 over a finer grit, in fact. The microscopic serrations are a benefit in many applications.

I appreciate the input, but we pride ourselves in having excellent factory edges!
