The Dock shunter was designed by John Hefford, who designed all Triang locos including the clockwork top tank mechanism and the Triang power bogies. He also designed the original Rovex plunger Princess locomotive for Rovex in 1949. He came to Triang when Rovex asked to be absorbed by Triang in 1951. Hefford also designed the Series 1 (Rovex Track), Series 2 (Standard Track), Series 3 and Super 4 track. Pretty much everything Triang Railways was designed by John Hefford. The original 1957 Dock Shunter has a different body (I own one) it was only made until 1958 when the Mark.3. coupling were introduced. The 1957 version has Mark.2. coupling and has a space between the driver's cab ladder and rear buffer plate. On the 1958 to 1980's versions this is filled by a riveted plate for strength. I'm surprised that you don't have one in your collection as the original 1957 Dock Shunter is very different and rare due to the very short production run. The version with the extended buffer shanks is a 1980's produced item. That's how to spot them. The buffer holes were made by inserting a pins into the moulding tool. Removing them omitted the buffer holes. Sometime somebody forgot to remove them. The 1957 catalogue picture shows the Dock Shunter with the number 57. This was shortened to 5 to save money in the actual production model as heat printing 57 would use up twice the amount of paint. It could only be purchased as a separate loco and did not appear in sets until years later.
Hi John like your video of the shunters, again maybe Network South East would be good one. Or just a thought how about a private loco such as British Steel as you can and may have some British Steel wagons for it too pull All the best Albert
Sorry John, forgot my idea. NCB - National Coal Board BUT by fitting the buffers with fitted shank put/stick/solder a solid drawing pin head to the shank - looks FAB with large buffer heads. (You could, of course, go to the 4mm parts suppliers- such as 247 developments -and buy some ready turned OLEO buffers, large head. Would look great. Cheers.
Hey john another great video, I have 3 of the dock shunters myself they are awsome. An INTERCITY black and white livery with wasp stripes wound look amazing.
John thanks for these vids you are a real inspiration i have learnt a considerable amount, you make things so easy and take your time to explain things im only a couple of years into trains and what a world to be in, just keep the information comming. kind regards ,ACE
There's one missing, Black with original Triang coupler I bought one when it was first released, intending to grind down the flanges for HD standard track. No could do, the wheels were case hardened. John Williams
That method of fitting buffers is currently used by Hornby - I have got two locos where thr buffer housing has disintegrated. It is a pity modern Hornby don't insert solid turned buffer snd housing into a hole the way Tri-ang did!
Hi John. How about LMS Black. Pullman Brown and Cream Livery as a station pilot. Or do it as a American Union Pacific or Baltimore and Ohio livery. Also please can you do a video on problem solving Triang motors such as overheating, magnet issues etc :) love the channel Rob
Lots of options, as you have already thought. You could go for pretty (I like the NSE early livery) You could go fictitious (S&DJR has been mentioned, so second vote for that, with nice gold lining) You could go for realistic (weathered, and a non-black NCB scheme) or fanciful (Regal crimson, so you can use it for marshalling the royal train). Or use a bit of research, and find a similar loco in preservation, and model this on that (eg the Sentinel MSC in royal blue and red buffers) Whatever, I'm sure you'll have fun choosing. And who's to say you don't start a sequence of these, so you can have more than one? Regards, Tom
LMS black or BR lined black would look nice. You could also get a little more creative and do a pre-grouping livery. For that I’d suggest Caledonian blue.
Hi John. Uneven numbers :) Interesting how these came about. Weatherd this time? or North British NBR www.scot-rail.co.uk/photo/scaled/3536/ OR LNER Apple green.. Lettering JAT. Alan.
Hi John Heapton Colliery blue yellow? My own fictional livery.. That I was gonna put on that very loco from ebay but I didn't get it (at least I know where it is now) If you want to check the colours out, look on my channel Keep,it up Oliver

Wow.first red 5 iv'e ever seen. Not seen the black 5 wiith mat paint either, all of mine are like the number 3.
That BR blue one looks quite nice!
Perhaps early BR Black?
Another vote for the prototype deltic livery (light blue with cream lining). Possibly with the same style of whiskers around the front headlight?
It would be interesting to see it in LNER, with the white/black/white trim, apple green and Gil Sans lettering!
Network south east 😆 it would be interesting to see how good Eric is at it.like everard junction s class 50 with the upper stripes.
Hola, Hi John, Love your videos, been watching them for quite a while great stuff. Your new addition Doc

Keep it local John. A black and yellow trim for Linby Docks!!
I have a black 3 but it has the same buffers as the black 5 and all the other variants

There's one missing, Black with original Triang coupler I bought one when it was first released, intending to grind down the flanges for HD standard track. No could do, the wheels were case hardened. John Williams

What about SZ livery, maybe the "Taurus" red or the Zeleni Vlak unit livery for Eric,or the livery of the fireless near Ljubljana station?
I think the BR blue model would look much better without wasp stripes on the buffer beam, and maybe a black grille ? ......
Has there been a follow up to this, and what colour was decided?
LNER lined Green, might be nice.
Crying out for LMS maroon or maybe Railfreight gray
I know it doesn't have the engine, but the headlamps inspired this, could you paint them in the Deltic Blue livery with the yellow striping?
Here's a spanner in the works. Get 4 dock shunters and get each one done in a livery of the "Big Four" You'll thank me later LOL
Network rail would look nice on it
Don’t forget they madeR353A for Australia red T/R logo without the shield.
Network south east because I want to see how skilled eric is by adding the upswep stripes.
Lots of suggestions here John, my choice is NCB. David.

Lots of options, as you have already thought.

LNER lined apple green
Bright Green or Orange - JAT (Johns Amazing Trains) livery.
I would go for NCB personally
