On March 4, 2002, TSgt John Chapman and 6 Navy SEALs participated in Operation Anaconda, the objective of which was to disrupt Tal!ban and al-Q@eda forces.
That night, the team was to fly in a Chinook helicopter to Takur Ghar Mountain in eastern Afghanistan to set up a observation post An AC-130 had scanned the area shortly before with thermal vision for hostiles, but could not pick up anything.
However, insurgents had hidden in bunkers under the thick blanket of snow and took such heavy fire on the team's Chinook on approach that the electronics failed, a fire broke out and Navy SEAL Neil Roberts fell out of the tailgate. After the helicopter made an emergency landing about 10km away, the soldiers decided to voluntarily fly back into the danger zone to rescue their comrade.
As soon as the team dismounted from the helicopter, it came under heavy machine gun fire and moved into position. Chapman, however, called in an AC-130 and then fought his way alone through the heavy snow to one of the bunkers, where he killed 2 enemy at close range. He then attacked a second bunker, where he was hit and collapsed. When yet another team member was shot, the squad leader decided to take evasive action, overlooking Chapman in the darkness and leaving him behind.
The latter, despite his life-threatening injury, regained consciousness some time later, resumed the fight and shot an enemy who was rushing toward him. Although hit again, he wrestled down another insurgent in hand-to-hand combat. Hearing the Quick Reaction Force helicopter at dawn, Chapman charged out of cover one last time and drew fire to prevent the enemy from shooting down the helicopter. Completely blanked and after 16 shrapnel / gunshot wounds, Chapman finally suffered a final hit to the heart and died.
The fierce battle on the hill continued into the evening, claiming the lives of 7 U.S. soldiers. Chapman was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in August 2018.

This guy was just as brave as any of the men I served with as a Marine in Vietnam. He definitely deserved the Medal of Honor.

I’m a retired Air Force PJ. I’ve been to takir gar, in anaconda,, knew John and I can tell you John’s mission that night was to retrieve the body of a slain navy seal. Nothing was going to stop that. Us AFSOC guys will never let our team mates down esp if we are embedded. We might be Air Force but those who know understand we will give you everything we got, so that others may live……we will never quit on you especially to retrieve a fallen special operator. I can tell you , John felt this was a sacred mission. He’d never quit and we’d never let you down.
Just a shame it doesn't appear this sentiment is reciprocated from the unit you might ve embedded with.

Hats off to you sir for saying exactly what happened. The Navy successfully BLOCKED the 2nd MOH because it would've proved that they left him behind, he only got approved for the one that saved the seals, not the one that saved the QRF. The Air Force fought for his MOH for 16 years. Once SOCOM knew he would get it, they quickly pushed the SEAL OIC MOH before approving Chapman's. Took about 6 months for his to go first before Chapman was approved. Shameful and disgusting from one of the world's best commands, to shadow a true hero that saved your men

For a long time he was saying Chapman died immediately after exiting the helicopter and that he took bunker #1. Check it out. Navy did that man dirty.
That's how command and politics work for sure. Our "wars" aren't for American good, it's to make politicians and their connections money and fame.
@@beatndagutta If i remember properly its talked about in the book that came out for it briefly, as well as interviews with the author where the oic claimed he never knew he passed by Chapman's body when they where descending. Alone at dawn is the book, the author and narrator where this video is from also states it partially there where the passed by him.
Absolute Respect to Chapman, and the armed forces. They took the "No man left behind" to heart. Rest In Peace Chapman, any attempts to cover up your bravery is just horrible, he deserved the Medal of Honor.

These accounts give me mixed feelings. On the one hand, What a brotherhood. He charged the enemy to protect his brothers with no regard for his health. I don’t know him, but I m proud of him. On the other hand it pisses me off when I consider no one effectively holds the politicians , alphabet agencies, and generals accountable for having little respect for the lives and well being of those who volunteer to take their orders.

Watching vets have to prove they were in the army after being sprayed with agent orange by their own gov is just one of many examples. No one held accountable.
As someone closely associated with army, I always respect soldiers. They selfless perform their duty and service the nation so that others can sleep in peace. It breaks my heart when others disrespect them or make fun of them. I have seen the family who lost their man the sacrifice they making and thinking about that makes me cry to. So if you see a soldier do thank them.. it will mean a lot to them. They are the real heroes.

What a story. I served in Afghanistan 2009 . These guys are on another level. He probably felt like it was all or nothing . We were alway taught to never surrender. Sounds like he gave it everything. A true hero . Respect to the highest level . 🇬🇧 🇺🇸

Crying hard over here, moved by the incredible strength and courage Chapman demonstrated and acted from even while in agonizing pain clinging on dearly for his own life. Selflessly, bravely doing what needed to be done to protect those he loved (his brothers and sisters in arms, his family and friends back home, and all good people around the world). I remember watching the other upload of this on TH-cam with only the text explanation. Every single time I watch it I tear up because this man was literally in Death's embrace, but refused to go until he did everything he could to protect his brothers. That's one of the purest forms of love and he's the type of man I aspire to be.

LUCK and WEALTH to the CHAPMAN family (they only get the fond memories of CHAPMAN; yes, others died. they are all important. Terrible reporting prevents us from knowing those names. But thanks to them too........ FAMILIES back home have nothing to savor from a piece of metal with a ribbon.

@YHWHoverevery1 The taliban housed a group of people that killed thousands of US citizens and refused to hand them over repeatedly, so the US invaded and pushed al-qaeda and taliban forces out of Afghanistan but stayed to help rebuild and hunt down remaining taliban and al-qaeda members wich did result in the deaths of some civilians and anger at that is fair, but saying that the invasion was unprovoked isn't fair.

26 years in, I've heard and watched this story countless times. ALWAYS brings up so much emotion in the form of respect for my USAF brother but also for the team that kept moving forward. They thought he was gone and made the call to protect the rest of the team, fall back and call in help. 110% the right call but try and tell them that. Then there is the family members that never volunteered or signed up to serve ... but still find themselves serving just as much as the rest of us. So much respect and LOVE for everyone touched by this.. and honestly if you are an American that is ALL of us. Love and respect to all my veteran brothers and their families.

Being born an raised in Oceanside, CA the city neighboring Camp Pendleton, CA (USMC base) I can never get threw videos like these without tearing up hearing how brave they were & maintained until their very last moments here on this earth. Its incredibly sad to hear this story but it's one that needs to be heard, some of these younger folks need to understand the good life we have here in the US didn't come cheap, lot of men & women have paid the ultimate sacrifice so that we don't have to. They won't be forgotten ❤️

We truly have to be grateful for heros like this team of soldiers and all other soldiers that risk their lives for all of us at home ,because not many people have the courage to even join the services let alone stand up and advance in the face of dire enemy fire while extremely hurt from multiple wounds ..god bless all service members around the world protecting fellow men and women from evil and terrorists ..thanks to all , from everyone of us here at home
Usually I cry about shit or am moved to tears when I'm really tired. But this hit different. It's not because killing people makes heroes but because of the sheer commitment not to leave a man behind against all possible odds. I salute the immense bravery of these men, even if they fight in seemingly senseless wars because politicians decided to do so. And I even admit that I am somewhat jealous of the brotherhood these men have. I'm not even a US-citizen and live in Germany but since we are allies and you guys regularly help our troops I want to thank everyone for their service because you also got many german soldiers out of the grips of death.

I love this story, I really aspire to join Air Force special warfare, though I'd rather be a PJ than a CCT. I've been reading the book "Alone At Dawn" recently and it's just such an amazing story when you learn more even outside the event that led to his death. He was a selfless and compassionate hero. If anyone's wondering who wrote the book it's by Dan Schilling, he also posted a video on youtube about how this was the first medal of honor ever recorded, also an amazing video like this one.

I've been on exercises with PJ'S when the US and the UK trained together and what troopers they are, a massive asset. Loved working with our brothers from across the pond 🇬🇧🤜🤛🇺🇸
