Thomas Payne is a Delta Force soldier who has freed over 70 hostages.
The civilians were captives of IS and were held in the town of Hawija in northern Iraq. When strong intel indicated that they would soon be executed, special forces attacked that same night.
First, they tried to blast their way through the wall, which alerted the enemy. After Payne made it inside, he took out resistance in the first building and freed 38 hostages.
He then ran through enemy gunfire to join his comrades, who were engaged in combat with entrenched terrorists. The building had begun to burn, yet Payne climbed to the roof and engaged the enemy from above.
Knowing that the hostages were running out of time, he headed for the main entrance. Regardless of the many enemies and blazing fire, he was the first man to storm the building. After freeing the hostages, Payne kept returning to the inferno to make sure that absolutely no one was left behind.
For this courageous actions he was awarded the Medal of Honor.

What's the reason for the title?
the Americans have been fighting farmers and cave men for the past 20 years. Meanwhile in Ukraine, every solder does these "Medal of honor" heroism on a daily basics.
Does Dakota Meyer not count as a living Medal Of Honor recipient? As of 09/15/11, he was awarded a MOH. 4 years prior to this case. Correct me if I'm wrong, and apologies for being a typical keyboard critic, i was just wondering.
He is the first living Delta Force member to receive the Medal of Honor, the third Delta Force recipient after Master Sergeant Gary Gordon and Sergeant First Class Randy Shughart who died in the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu, and the first Medal of Honor recipient for Operation Inherent Resolve.
There is one crucial detail of the mission that you guys have it wrong is that the Kurdish unit who partnered with the delta force are the CTU not CTG, the CTG wasn’t part of that operation.
Be not sorrowful of their passing. Be thankful that such men have lived among us.

When I was at basic at fort benning we had the honor of receiving a speech by him. You could tell he’s been around the world and has endured the suck. He was extremely polite and humble and made it extremely clear your never out of the fight. Telling us multiple times it was all thanks to team work.
One thing I've noticed in life walking among giants, those who actually rate to be cocky never are.

I was a 15 year old teenager when Mosul fell and me and my family fled to Erbil in Kurdistan, tough dark days they were but they passed. The sacrifices of those American, Iraqis and Kurdish Iraqis will forever be engraved in my heart as pulsing symbols of gratitude. remember and pray for the dead but fight for living.

Joshua Wheeler is from the county I live in. I remember hearing how a delta guy from our area had died and it just struck me how much these guys are silent heroes. Would’ve been amazing to know him before he died

Joshua wheeler lived in my neighborhood. I knew him and we used to talk a lot about volleyball as he was a big fan. His family was also very polite but sadly after his demise they left the city and moved to their native place. I wish he was alive.
My dad had the honor of meeting him. He said he was one of the nicest folks ever and extremely humble

After serving in the United States Army and now retired I know but don't know what and how it takes to do a job like this. These men are the best of the best men not just in the Army but in civilian life as well. These men are who I looked up to be not only in my military enlistment but my everyday life. There have been 14 other living MoH recipients since Sal Giunta.
SGM Payne is actually the most recent living Medal of Honor recipient, and the only living Delta Force operator to have received the medal, since Vietnam.
The title is a little misleading, because there are currently 65 Medal of Honor recipients currently alive. So I assume you meant to say he is the first living recipient since the Vietnam War?
The courage and fortitude shown by all members of the military is worthy of recognition! We need not forget those who have served in the times before the praise was so readily dished out.

I knew quite a few Delta men when I was in. Bragg is a huge SOCOM/JSOC station and if you go to any schools there on post you rub shoulders with all the service branches and different units. Also, most of the recreation locations have quite the diverse population. They're really laid-back guys and very nice. Never once did I have one of them act like they were superior to anyone else. They just quietly and calmly do everything. A great group of folks that I was honored to be acquainted with and do some very fun things with. SGM Payne is a helluva hero. I was at Bragg when SFC Shugart and MSGT Gordon were killed. It was a solemn time.

When you're old the mistakes of youth help you realize you're neither rich nor lucky but poor and stupid.

As a Kurdish Peshmerga, RIP Wheeler and kudos for Payne’s bravery and outstanding leadership. However, 3 Kurdish CT servicemen were also injured in this op and i feel like they are not getting the enough credit that their actions and and efforts deserve. Yes initially there were some complications with the breach but that can happen to any unit during the fog of war, particularly as they probably had no initial knowledge of the internal layouts and structure of the compound as well as Kurdish CT units are trained and equipped by American, British, and other Western coalition allied forces so… While fighting ISIS you could never be sure what to expect due to the many tunnels they dug, countering multiple SVBIEDs and VBIEDs on a daily basis was unlike any other conventional warfare to date! I wish all my brothers in the US military, whether they have served in the past or present, safety and wellbeing. Hurrah and cheers boys💪🏻🇺🇸🍻

No man left behind he couldn't stop that thought that had been drilled into his head throughout his training. This man deserves the highest honors and I hope that his life went well after deployments and so fourth. What about Bob L. Howard? He was the most highly decorated soldier in Vietnam, a colonel in SOG and was nominated for the medal of honor multiple times before receiving it, and didn’t die until 2009 in Waco, texas

@@boristhebarbarian 1st special forces operational detachment-delta wasn’t what it was called, but the precursor to delta force absolutely was in Vietnam, project delta ran countless missions in south Vietnam from 1964 to 1970. It was deactivated when blue light was established and when blue light was eventually deactivated many of its members went on to join delta force in its infancy.

Kids don't even want to go into the military in general like they did when I was 17-18. Back then it was hard to get slots at the recruiter for certain MOS, it was normal to have to wait 6 months to ship for a slot at SOI in the Marine Corps. these days they are begging for people to fill slots up and they are having problems doing it. One issue I've heard is they've actually made it harder for people to join now compared to when I was first getting in. Simple things like if you ever been on certain medications, they have a new medical record system that finds stuff and if things pop up you're a no go. I've heard people are getting turned around at MEPS all the time, then having to deal with the waiver process they say to hell with it, find something else to do.
At the rate this country is going now. We are making fewer and fewer and are far less deserving of men like this.

Great man, truly an exceptional human being of great character, balls of steel and the example of exceptionalism.
He deserves that medal, he and but a few good men whether dead or alive, all of them earned this.
The mission would've been accepted to be accomplished succesfully with collateral damage, but this man did what was right and did it only with his fellow man in mind.
He deserves nothing but the best there is to offer in life, we need people like him around. Glad he is still alive, hopefully.

The medal was well deserved. They are literally the unsung heroes of many clandestine and extremely dangerous missions. As far as I am concerned they are the best special operations teams that the US relies upon. Thank you for your service and for going above and beyond for our country and for the freedom that Americans enjoy.
Truly heroic by being sent to a country that never attacked the US until our needless war in 2003 encouraged the formation of IS.

The term special forces in the US military only means green berets. The only American SOF unit that was involved in that mission is CAG(deltaforce)

Anyone else ever accidentally talked to any Delta guys at the PX, Fast Food places or anywhere on base at Ft Bragg? They’re a different breed of humans.
In 1999, I was leaning against a wall outside the PX (over by the MP chow hall) which is semi close to the Delta Compound on Bragg, and this guy comes up in jeans, button down flannel shirt untucked, beard (this is before every SF dude had a beard. Beards were rare at Bragg at this time), sunglasses much longer hair than I had. I was in uniform BDUs at the time, PFC. he just walks up with a wife and kid (wife and kid goes inside PX) and leans against the wall by me. I honestly assumed he had recently retired. I was putting Copenhagen Wintergreen Green Dip in my mouth and asked him do you want any? He responded “hell yeah brother.” We stood there and talked for about 30 mins, mostly him asking me questions about my unit, MOS, my plans and I asked “when did you get out of the military?” He laughed and pulled his ID out, and said “still active, with no plans on getting out.” He then said I’m at that small compound on the right as you’re heading out to the drop zones. I acted like I knew what he was talking about but I was brand new to Bragg. Weeks later I do my first jump on Bragg as we were heading back in my friends showed me where the Delta Compound is….then it all made total sense.
Then ran into about six of them one night while drunk and out 4wheeling my Jeep with my buddies out close to Normandy Drop Zone but way out in the woods. These dude had MP’5s and swarmed our vehicles, they were obviously just training but they thought we were part of the training, they lined us all up face down on the ground/sand asking us all types of questions for about 15 mins. Then I hear one say “man, I don’t think they’re op4. These are just some idiot drunk soldiers” they told us to keep our heads down and in 5 mins we could get up and better “get the fuck out of here the way you came” when we got up, didn’t see a single one anywhere.
Both of these were in the first year at Bragg. I had a few more experiences over my 14 year career. I always admired those men and the sacrifices they do for all of us.

I served 22 years and Bragg was my first duty stationed and I loved it. No matter where I was sent in the world, I always found myself back. Had something to do with them dang wings and funny looking hat. No worries, there are more youngins coming in daily. You just won’t hear about em just like no one heard about us, who joined. Keep telling the stories and spitting the truth and we’ll be fine.
My father was at Bragg in the early 70s i have heard stories about things that happened t him > I have wondered if they were true. One being he did a jump one night an it was late an ended up in the woods an a number of them got hurt bad.

Those that don’t serve will never know the bond that forms in training and is hardened in combat produces. Those men and women are brothers and sisters even closer to you than the bonds of blood. These story’s need to be shared far and wide in our society not just throughout the military, so all citizens know what the few have sacrificed for the many to live free.

The title is misleading. The first living recipient of the Medal of Honor was Private Parrott in 1862 per The Congressional Medal of Honor Society. In fact, he was the first ever recipient. He didn’t die until 1902.
SGM (SFC at the time of action) Payne is the most recent living recipient, however. And as the video said, he is the first living delta force member to receive the Medal of Honor.
The title has (Delta Force) in it. So he means the first living unit member to get it.
