Died January 26, 2005 Serving During Operation Iraqi Freedom
22, of Cherokee, Iowa; assigned to 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Base Hawaii; killed Jan. 26 when the CH-53E helicopter in which he was riding crashed near Rutbah, Iraq. Twenty-nine Marines and one sailor also were killed.
Iowa Marine killed in helicopter crash
When he was talking about the helicopter crash it brought a flashback to when i Iost a friend the same way over in Iraq. All articles about this say it was because of the sandstorm brought the helicopter down and everyone died from the crash. Nathan didn't die from the crash, himself and others were injured some severely but they had been found by the enemy and all the ones that were alive were shot and killed. He was killed 1 day before his 23rd birthday and we laid him to rest 1 day after he was supposed to be coming home from Iraq. The town we grew up in was small just about 5300 people and there wasn't one person less than that who wasn't outside lined up for miles including other towns around us join in with Fire and police. We had an ex Navy Seal in my hiking club that I got to know. He knew I was ex Navy too, but a radarman. One time I encountered him going up a very steep hill near Auburn CA we call training hill. I was walking and he was jogging. He invited me to jog up the hill with him and I did for about 100 yards but I couldn’t keep up with him so I told him to continue jogging and I would walk the rest of the way up and meet him at the top. I’ll never forget what he said which was no, I’ll walk up with you, we never leave a man behind. I said you were a Seal and I was a radarman, that doesn’t count, you guys did pushups and we just pushed buttons. He said yes it does, we are both ex Navy, we were on the same team and we walked the rest of the way up the hill together like brothers. This was a really tuff guy built like a bulldog but yet he had a fierce and humble sense of supporting a team member even if he was just a skinny ex navy radarman.

One of the good things about being an American, is knowing that if you ever get captured like that, whether they are able to pull it off or not, there are men like this man, who are planning and trying to figure out how to come get you, and will pull out all of the stops to do so. I think just knowing that would help me get through something like that.

Absolutely ,each and every veteran deserves to never have to worry about things like medical and mental help ,power and water and a home ,their sacrifices r so many that all of that is barely enough .I just watched the video here and the vet Travis ,lost all of his limbs and he was still more worried about his fellow soldiers . I can't imagine how hard that would be for anyone ,to not even be able to feed yourself ,dress yourself ,all of those things We take for granted r gone in an instant and for a soldier ,it must be even worse ,We've all seen movies about veterans hurt so bad but in the movie Forest Gump Lt Dan to me ,showed more of what that must feel like ,the hopelessness of losing your body parts and Dan still had his arms and legs but the actor could not have played that part any better ,You see the pain in his eyes ,how anyone comes back from that I just don't know. Soldiers should get the best medical care available on the planet but they deserve so much more .@@mariahc.2681

That these highly trained and experienced men were prepared to enter the enemy camp in order to rescue an American Doctor being held captive, in the full knowledge that they may be killed, wounded or captured is utterly remarkable!
They had a pretty good idea that they'd be up against experienced, heavily armed terrorists, but still they volunteered!
Whilst their rescue was a success, they lost a brother warrior in combat, and that must hurt.

Also, judging by your TH-cam monicker, I’m certain that nothing I typed in my response to you made any sense whatsoever. You are obviously a degenerate that has no concept of what duty honor and sacrifice means. Regardless, I took the time to respond to you using hands-free texting.

Chief Byers' narrative and the way he tells this mission is riveting and awesome. The men of DEVGRU are amazing. I'm from Coronado and had the privilege of knowing and befriending a SEAL who eventually went on to be a plank owner on SEAL team 6. This was around 1980/81 time frame. I found out later that he was also a member of Gold squadron when he was there. As it turned out, I later became an AFSOC gunship pilot and actually ran into my friend on one of my first combat missions. Although he is no longer with us, he was a great guy and I really miss him. Chief Byers is exactly the type of guy you'd see in SEAL teams and even the guys at Ft. Bragg. Friendly to a fault, intelligent, well spoken, and obviously in tremendous physical shape with endurance that is hard to imagine. Respect and honor these men for keeping our country safe from a lot of evil that would take away our freedom and way of life.

And you can bet he drastically understated the situation. What a lot of folks don't get is when the world of bad is closing in on you- you don't get to stop and reference a book or tell the client to call you back. He is an extraordinary man doing things maybe .0001% of the men in the world can do. You have to remember, recall, act, protect and mentally manage a million things while rounds are sometimes impacting the loose parts of your gear. And that is if you are lucky. Chief Byers is a warrior and that means not only the violence we do but switching on compassion when necessary but not letting it wreck you on the spot. Mental and physical discipline and toughness is everything. There are a billion people smarter, faster stronger than me. The difference is I'll keep going. Well not so much anymore- a lot softer than I was 10-15 yrs ago.

Feel free to look up that valley. It’s called the “valley of death.” And this was the first and ONLY successful military operation in that valley in all of recorded history. Dating back to the Persian Empire and staying that way until the Soviet Union was destroyed and avoided that valley after dozens of failed attempts. The biggest loss of special forces happened in that valley. This was the FIRST and ONLY successful mission ever carried out in history in that valley.
