    Our full tour and review of the 2019 Kia Niro EV SX Touring goes over everything you need to know if you're in the market for this ultra cute subcompact crossover electric vehicle. We discuss the differences in price for Canadian market Niros including the SX Touring and EX trims, along with what features you end up getting by going with the SX Touring. We also explain how the Canadian federal EV incentives work along with the incentives offered by the Québec provincial government.
    We compare the dimensions and specifications between the 2019 Kia Niro EV and the 2019 Kia Niro Hybrid long term test vehicle we have, including exterior dimensions, interior head room, shoulder room, leg room, and cargo capacities. We also go over what features you get on the EV versus the same trim from the hybrid. After we go over how the EV technology works from Kia and how it differs from other full electrics we've featured on TestDrive to date.
    We then take the 2019 Kia Niro EV SX Touring on a comprehensive road test in the rain to talk about how the EV performs and handles on the road, and how the electric drivetrain compares to other EVs and the Hybrid Niro. We also go without charging along the Autoroute de Cantons de l'Est, Québec's highway that connects downtown Montréal with the Eastern Townships north east of Sherbrooke. We managed to drive 407 km without charging the Niro EV before returning back to our studio with less than 4km range.
    We continue with a second drive to go over how the regenerative braking works along with the smart brake regeneration system, and how this car performs in Sport mode over Eco mode. We then wrap up our episode on the 2019 Kia Niro EV SX Touring with a rundown of what we liked and disliked about this electric crossover and what we we calculated in terms of long-term ownership and cost benefit over the hybrid model.

    Would’ve gotten Soul EV over the SX Turbo Tech if it wasn’t for the short range. Glad to see Kia go all in this time. Hopefully they continue the logical German dash design in the future when electric is mainstream. Thank you for not making your electric cars look like electric cars.🙏 Please never change.

    The range has come so far with Electric Cars. 5 and half hours of driving on 1 tank, or Battery is very good in such a short amount of time advancing Battery technology. You’re not driving a penalty Box with tiny wheels and that looks like an experiment. No matter what car I have owned since the early ‘80’s would go from my place in Massachusetts to Atlantic City, NJ. To hit the casinos (only 330 miles) would use more then a full tank. I would have to stop and have to buy a little gas to complete the trip, I was always afraid of running out. I like it. I can only imagine the next 10 years..Thank You so much for all you do!

      less than 330 with a full tank? horrible fuel economy... my car need only 6.5 gal for such distance
      330 miles are not an easy target even with the most capable ev today available, model S 100kw

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A car from the 1980s certainly, I think my 83 LTD Crown Victoria got about 300km to a tank and it must have been a 70L tank. Today most cars can do 330mi, though the 2020 Nissan Maxima we're in this week had an estimated range of 480km when we picked it up. Electric car tech is certainly advancing quickly. I imagine 10 years from now we'll look back at a car like this Niro and laugh about how small 386km will feel.

      @@PRNTestDrive 300km and 70L... insane for a 80's sedan
      with 70 liters my motorcycle can travel 2500km :D
      but i dont think EV range dramaticaly improve like 1000+ km, because batteries seems had a sweet spot top end around 100 net kW and there's no reason to put a giant battery with enormous increase in price and weight since not even internal combustion vehicles get a 100-200 liters tank for get bigger fuel range and put a bigger tank is by far much more cheap and simple than a huge battery.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the real improvement will end up coming from motor efficiency and charging time. If EVs end up topping out around the 500km range but the ability to charge them, and to do so faster improves to the point where you don't have to worry about it we'll be set. 99% of the driving I do in any given month can be done on a single charge, and if I went across the province I'd have little trouble finding L3 stations if I wanted to go further.

      Very nice, hopefully with everything going on you'll be able to get yours! The floor mats for this were the OEM Kia Niro ones, should be something you can order directly from your dealer. I found the fit was excellent, these press cars can get pretty wrecked in the winter, and although we had it in the summer you could tell the floor mats helped to protect it up until that point.

      That's a pretty incredible range! I've noticed that he European range ratings are always higher than they are here. I have to suspect some of it has to do with the geography, perhaps the terrain/climate is better suited for electrics compared to Canada.

      We try to set ourselves apart from the 'competition'. Quebec is easily the leader when it comes to electrification, I hope the other provinces will start to catch up, we've heard from a lot of people across the country who wish cars like this were more accessible.

  • @paulm6481

    Solid car with plenty of room in both rows, would this not be classified as compact? While I agree electric and range matter, electric and performance also go hand in hand, think Tesla 😀. This is the future, there is no doubt, decent range, more charging stations every day, it’s only a matter of time before everyone is assimilated and buy these whether you have a home to charge or not.

    Just put in an order for one of these. Wait time in BC right now is about 1 year but considering the value for money, it is tough to beat. I live on Vancouver Island and currently own a 1st gen. Nissan Leaf. Problem is that regularly I have family that comes over and needs picking up from the ferry. The Leaf just isn't up to the distance. As a result, by the time I pick them up, bring them to my home, drive them back after the visit, then drive home again in my ICE Pickup, I have spent a sizable chunk of what it would cost for them to just bring their car in the first place. I'm glad some of them are saving some money on ferry fares but it will sure be nice to be able to drive the distance in an EV.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @sirpurrcival 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PRNTestDrive It's possible, I would presume that Kia/Hyundai realize that the mania for electric vehicles isn't going to continue forever. We are fast approaching a tipping point where electric vehicles are going to become the defacto mainstream vehicle of choice despite the best efforts of the fossil fuel industry. Times are changing and changing fast. As such, I would hope that Kia is working hard to ramp up production to cash in while they can. The choices are getting broader and right now is their time. They represent a product that doesn't quite have the cachet of Tesla but come with a much more palatable price tag and very well featured. I hope they have learned the lesson that Nissan failed to after they first introduced the Leaf. They are a cautionary tale about how you can be on top the world and through slowness fritter away that status to be relegated to an after thought in the conversation. You can't rest on your laurels. I wanted hard to be loyal to Nissan for bringing this type of vehicle to the mass market but they just made it impossible to do so. Rivian is in trouble too. They have taken far too long to get their product on the streets and by the time they do, they won't likely be the only player in that segment. Timing is critical, you can't rush things too much but if you dally, people lose interest and move on. At any rate, thanks for the review, it was very well done.

    That’s a bargain price compared to the UK. If Kia stays with the same sort of pricing as Hyundai, (64kWh Kona being $69,670 CAD). And the 1st EIdition of the Niro EV was approx. $5,100 CAD more than the Kona. Making the Niro EV’s current price $74,770 CAD. And that doesn’t include plates or registration... and there’s now a two year waiting list
    Plus or maybe that should be minus. The UK version of the Niro EV, is spec’d as below:
    •Headlights are halogen only
    •Fog lights are halogen only
    •Front cabin courtesy lights are LED. But the ones under the sun visors are filament bulbs, as is the rear courtesy light.
    •Drivers seat is full electric, while the front passenger seat has manual adjustment only
    •The front seats are heated but not cooled
    •The rear seats are not heated or cooled
    •The sun visors do not extend
    •The heat pump is standard fitting
    •External door handles and side door trim, are chrome coloured plastic
    •Full leather seating, with no non-animal skin option
    •No rear cross traffic alert RCTA
    •No blind spot monitoring BSM/BSA
    •No 12v power socket in boot
    •No USBs or 12v or power sockets for rear passengers
    •Rear tail lights are LED but all other rear lights are filament bulbs
    •rear window while being electric, are not one-touch, as operates from either the rear or driver’s panel
    •heating for rear passengers at feet level only
    •Rear view mirror tilts manually to avoid night-light glare
    •No app available
    •Type-2 cable is optional extra
    There is only one trim level. Apart from the Type-2 cable, nothing else can be added. The total number of units in the UK, is 200 or less. In Ireland, the total 2019 allocation was six. They’ve increased the 2020 allocation, next year they’ll get eight.

      We received very few of these here in Canada this year, we're basically waiting for 2020 models at this point also. As far as EV's go in Canada, you are fortunate to live in Quebec. As you've found out, the charging infrastructure in Ontario is abysmal, to put it mildly. I live in a city of 400,000 and we have a total of three Level 3 charging stations (at less than 50 Kilowatt capacity) and a whopping 24 Level 2 public chargers. Even Tesla has ignored putting a Supercharger here even though we're situated right on the busiest highway in North America. Good luck owning a Tesla here, or any other EV for that matter, if you live in an apartment building. Couple all that with hydro rates which are more than double those in Quebec along with NO provincial incentives and EV's are a losing proposition here. And that's just the way our stupid current provincial government likes it!

      400k, so not Hamilton, but maybe Kitchener/Waterloo? That was our experience when we took the 2019 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid to Stoney Creek this past spring. I used to live in Lincoln, Ont., about 15 minutes east of Hamilton and thought at the time that the couple L2 chargers they installed in town, and the Tesla supercharging station in Grimsby were adequate, until I moved to Quebec. Owning one of these EVs is a lot easier out here, that's for sure.

      @@PRNTestDrive London, Ontario actually. You know, exactly half way in between Detroit and Toronto. Why Tesla decided to install an 8 Stall Supercharger Station in Woodstock instead of London, I'll never know. Also, our intellectually challenged Municipal Government decided they were going to promote electric vehicles so they installed two FREE Level 2 chargers in the City Hall Parking Garage. Well that's nice! Problem is, there's NO reason to ever want to park at City Hall as there's nothing remotely close in the way of eateries or shopping, and it costs $5 to park for only 2 hours. That is not enough time to fully charge a Plug-In Hybrid with a 10 Kilowatt hour. Even if it could charge in that time, 10 Kilowatts of electricity is worth about $1.50 Oh, the wisdom of politicians!

    Chrome accents are not a bonus, but a drawback.

    I don't see the benefit to going electric

      I drive a PHEV. To drive 40 km, it costs me 42 cents in electricity. If I were to drive my wife's Corolla the same distance it would cost $4.32 in gas. Hard to argue with those numbers.

      It all comes down to how much driving you do. We tried to give a simple break-down at the end of the video about upfront cost on this EV versus the regular Hybrid Niro. It will take years to pay off the difference in MSRP even under severe driving circumstances. If you drive a lot, especially in-town where normal ICE vehicles are less efficient you’ll recoup those costs quicker. Once BEV costs come down, especially once incentives start to go away we’ll see more adoption of them.

      Let's see this year I will save 4000.00 dollars just because I am no longer buying gasoline or paying fuel taxes. Plus I don't buy oil antifreeze or paying for tune ups plus the incredible lidar radar saved me 125 dollars on my car insurance. Don't forget I no longer spend money at the gas station either!!!
