Gambit (CBS) with Wink Martindale & Elaine Stewart

  • This video collage that I made is from the game show, "Gambit" that aired on CBS from September 4, 1972 to December 10, 1976.
    The host was Wink Martindale.
    The hostess was Elaine Stewert.
The theme song is from the 1972 version. I'm not sure if it had a title or not.
The last 7 pictures are just pictures of Elaine Stewart (3) and Wink Martindale (4) to fill up space since I couldn't find anymore pictures from this game show.
The episode status is unknown outside of one 1974 episode traded among collectors (and posted here on TH-cam) and five 1973 episodes held by the UCLA Film and Television Archive.
In the fall of 1977, reruns of the original CBS version of Gambit aired in syndication (primarily on WPIX-TV New York and KHJ-TV Los Angeles). It is then likely that this version still exists as CBS had mostly abandoned the practice of erasing older tapes by the early 1970s; However, it has instead been lost or misplaced.

I loved Gambit! RIP Merrill Heatter, Bob Quigley, Kenny Williams, and Elaine Stewart. Also, RIP Mort Garson, who composed the themes to Gambit, Baffle/All-Star Baffle, The Amateur's Guide To Love, Runaround, The Magnificent Marble Machine, and Battlestars, all produced by Heatter-Quigley, save for Battlestars, which was produced by Merrill Heatter solo.

You have the knowledge! You know the odds! All the rest in the cards, on Gambit! A game of skill, fate, and fortune! And now, from Television City in Hollywood, your host, Wink Martindale!

I found out that both Wink Martindale and Jim Caldwell from Tic Tac Dough both did game shows based on the game Blackjack, (Wink Martindale, Gambit, Jim Caldwell, Top Card).

Gambit, TPIR, Joker, Match Game, Tattletales...CBS owned it in the early-mid 70s with their game shows.

Theme song composed by Mort Garson. He also composed the electronic moog themes for "The Amateur's Guide for Love", "Baffle", "The Magnificent Marble Machine", "Runaround", and "Battlestars" all for Merrill Heatter-Bob Quigley Productions.

Specifically, this music was the closing theme. There was different melody Moog theme at the opening. Also, at the Paley Center in both Beverly Hills and New York, they have another episode on file that, in my opinion, is slightly better, gameplay-wise than the trading circuit one.

The story behind the 1977 reruns is true. IIRC, scattered episodes from the series' early years aired haphazardly on one station in particular. There was no pattern to the rerun cycle, just absolute chaos! Lol

This was a combination of a game show and the classic casino game BlackJack (or 21, depending on what you want to call it).

Milton Bradley (since 1984, a part of Hasbro) was going to make home version board games of BOTH Gambit and Las Vegas Gambit in 1973 and 1981 respectively, but the box games were cancelled before they were released. That's odd, because Gambit was getting high ratings in its original run, and Las Vegas Gambit was doing okay in the ratings. Bummer. I would love to have gotten them had they come out.

I think that all of the episodes exist. If they do, CBS might've misplaced them. 5 more episodes have now popped up and are now in the UCLA Television & Film Archive.

Its odd that GSN never tried running this version of Gambit since its the only one of the two to believed to have survived 100% intact due to a syndicated rerun package in 1975.

That's exactly the first thing that went into my mine when I heard this theme song. In fact, at 1:01 to 1:28, the music reminds me of Dick Tracy for the NES.

I know Ms. Stewart, for the last 47 years of her life, was married to "Gambit's" co-producer Merrill Heatter, but was she in any way of any relation to another famed game show producer, Bob Stewart (especially since he and Elaine were also born with the same original surname, besides sharing the same stage surname)?

    • @toddwacha5108
      @toddwacha5108 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Actually, Elaine Stewart, God rest her soul, was born Elsy Steinberg. Bob Stewart, God rest his soul was born Isadore Steinberg. I don't think that the two were related, although Steinberg is a pretty common name.

Gambit and The Joker's Wild both debuted along with one other game show on CBS on September 4, 1972. Both Gambit and The Joker's Wild are currently off the air. But that third show that's still running, what's it called? Oh yeah, The Price Is Right, now in its 50th (that's right, 50th) season on CBS.
