- Special Reaction Team Marines assigned to the Camp Foster Provost Marshal's Office, Marine Corps Installations Pacific- Marine Corps Base Camp Butler, Japan, shoot colorful balloons under physical stress as part of sniper training at Range 22, Camp Hansen, Okinawa, Japan Feb. 24, 2015. Civilian instructors with the Marine Corps Police Academy's Advanced Training Group facilitated the drills as part of a month-long training evolution for the SRT Marines and potential SRT prospects.

Occasionally I'll take helium balloons, tie them on a fishing line about six foot long. Then tie the other end to old brick and go to the range. It's hard to hit a balloon moving around in the wind but it helps replicate a moving head and it helps train for prediction of position and faster more accurate trigger pull when acquired. I do it at about 30 feet max for pistol and 100 yds max for rifle. I mostly use a Ruger 10-22 or my Browning buck mark. It's a real challenge, fun as hell and very satisfying when you pop the balloon. A real bonus is the balloons aren't shooting back. - Semper Fi

Is there any particular reason why the Marine didn't shoulder his weapon normally at 0:36? Just curious.

The instructor explained at the beginning of the video that this was a timed competitive stress test. That weapon was not doped to any Marine, therefore as that Marine is firing off hand with a scoped DMR he is having trouble establishing proper eye relief from the scope. Hence the need to " choke up" on the stock.Most Marines with a properly doped and scoped DMR as their T/O weapon could hit those small balloon targets all day from 200 plus, the individuals are having to adapt to picking up Any Weapon and compete.
+Kevin Yeandle The M110 is a long rifle. Shouldering it the way he did helped him stabilize it. He's a short guy.

I've wondered, do members of srt get to see combat? Or do they stay on base and wait for something to happen?
SRT is a job reserved for the MP field and specifically for those MP's that are on the PMO side of the MP field. MP's that are involved in Corrections or Law Enforcement Battalions (aka Field MP's) cannot be on the SRT. SRT stays stateside on the base that each PMO unit is assigned to because they are the SWAT team for that base. They could go out on a deployment to do the things PMO does when deployed in a pinch but that isn't common because SRT's are a vital part of an installation commander's dedicated security assets. How can they secure the base from, say, a violent domestic dispute, if they're in Afghanistan?

Why aren’t they shouldering they’re weapon
The Marine Corps Marksmanship program teaches us to shoot perpendicular to the target then standing. You get the stock high on your shoulder so you can get the stock up to your cheek without tilting your head down. You rest the rifle on your left thumb (like a "C" grip with palm facing towards you. fingers trying to stay out of the way of the ejection port), jam your left elbow into your ribs, and point your toes slightly inward which adds stability to your legs. That is the most accurate way to shoot offhand while standing. However, in actual combat we don't shoot like this. Instead, we face the target and take a more aggressive stance to manage recoil and be more maneuverable. With all that being said, you still want the toe of the but to sit in the pocket where your collar bone meets your front delt. That Marine in the at 0:36 is about to get scope bite on his eye if he's not careful.

more stable shot, quicker eye relief, easier to hold the weight... the only reason to shoulder the butt is for recoil control. (edit to clarify - being only 5.56, there is no recoil, and it's a fixed stock... so by bringing the weight of the rifle inwards, he can make it more stabile, and can stand & hold his head/neck naturally when shooting.. if it was a collapsible stock, i'm sure he'd have it collapsed all the way down and shouldered the butt. )
It clearly recoiled into his eye.

yeah, I was in the Corps too and also worked for five years as a contractor overseas. Gotta say, what I saw overall was a huge waste of taxpayer's money. Out-sourcing everything. I remember we had some young Marines at our camp in Afghanistan and talking with them, they told me that before deploying the Corps sent them to an out-sourced training center to do weapons quals,medical training etc. The place was staffed by a bunch of retired Gunny's, etc. Who knows, maybe in the long run it's cheaper, but I hate to think that any of our branches of the military has to resort to hiring outside agencies to do things that they were quite capable of doing themselves for generations.
Most are prior service, or received quality training elsewhere, like from PMCs or law enforcement.
Being a civilian is really a legal technicality. Civilians can know as much or more than active servicemembers.

You want to see combat? Hows about you make it through training, learn bond, develop and worry about combat later. I get what you are saying Marines like aggressive gungho people but if I could drive home 1 lesson to everyone going through Marine Corps bootcamp and MOS school is to learn how to learn and learn ho to follow and focus on the task in front of you. There will be a time soon enough when you will have so much shit to think about you will feel like you are riding a bull in a hurricane- And you will likely be leading other Marines- do them a favor and learn how to learn. good luck

Connor Duffy Okay stupid. You don't have to be in the Marine Corps to know that you tuck a rifle into your shoulder and it is improper to shoot the way he did. Hence his un-managed recoil.
It could be for a variety of reasons. A technique you don't know. Just told to do it for the camera. Etc. I seriously doubt someone who is training to be a sniper in the marine corps doesn't know how to shoot a rifle.
DM Bright he isn't shooting around a barricade, he isn't missing an arm, he isn't even practicing unconventional shooting positions. His form sucks and everybody should know that. That's not how you shoot when your static and not running drills of any kind. It's bad recoil management, bad sight alignment. The entire thing is awful. Unless he is a new shooter or hasn't shot a gun before the military which is common there's no excuse for that. Take a class some time.
Fundamentals apply to all platforms. I frequently practice moving and shooting and moving from conventional and unconventional shooting positions. I practice with my AR15 as well as my friends. I also do the same thing with the AK platform, bullpups and M1A's. If you can shoot an AR15 you can shoot them all. This isn't rocket science kid. You should be applying the same pistol and rifle fundamentals to ANY weapon put into your hands. I understand you are butthurt but that doesn't change the fact that that is poor form and the Marines have probably since corrected him.
