      I was thinking moreof a "control freak" who is treating the kid as if he is a brainless, useless , incompetent baby. With Dads non-stop micro-managing, the poor kids appears too shit-scared to make any type of decision for himself.

    Great job on the Mahi Mahi. I'll be headed that way myself before long with my Hobie TI. Love those Hobie Islands.

    Which hand held radio model do you use? Boy did you make it look easy beach launching.

    • @motleypixel
      @motleypixel  ปีที่แล้ว

      Standard Horizon HX210 and HX870, can't go wrong with Standard Horizon models. Yeah, it's easy now so long as surf conditions are like shown in this video. In fact, last few times I've gone straight to un-furling the sail to get through with the help of the wind.

    Extremely lucky catch.
    Was wondering if it was better to swim in the kayak through thd surf rather than paddle it in to the beach?

    Great job man! I was one of the guys to go out with Blake the day before you went and it was an epic day of fishing. That mahi is a trophy fish for that area. Well done👊

    • @motleypixel
      @motleypixel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Blake's brother? I wanted to fish more with my son but I'm glad we started heading back to the beach at noon. This put us at washing off the last bit of gear at 10:30PM. My son hooked up with both of those fish just past the largest close rig (the larger rectangle one).

      @@motleypixel I'm not his brother, but the guy who rode with him to the beach. He called you a few times while will we were headed back which is why your name sounds familiar to me. He also mentioned that a Mahi was caught the next day, so I figured this was you lol.

    Great video. Looks like you've got those AI's rigged up nicely. Also some great fishing action.
    Couple of questions about your setup. Did you modify the cleat location for the main sheet and furling line? What do you like about having the furling line and main sheet on opposite sides? Also, what was the main purpose of the line riser behind the seat? Mostly to keep the line away from your head?

    • @motleypixel
      @motleypixel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello. I like the idea of having more separation of the lines so that's why I did that. However, while solving one problem I introduced another problem and that's the cleating action of the furling line. Now the furling line is much higher than the cleat so the cleating action isn't as efficient. So at that point I had to choose the lesser of the two evils. Yes that riser is a non-captive sheet line "deflector". By non-captive I mean I did not bound the main sheet through mounted fairleads like most do with these as I feel that design limits sail operation. So when the main sheet jibs while changing direction, it helps deflect the main sheet up and over my head. Finally, I put a cloths line between that riser which is nice to lash things to and because it's between the riser/deflector it doesn't mess with the main sheet. Hope that makes sense.

    Nice video! I also happen to own 2 AIs, one yellow and one red. I mostly fish in the Monterey Bay here in CA, and I've done a lot of customization to improve the sailing performance (a furling jib being the biggie). If you are ever in the neighborhood, let me know!

  • @fishkillerandy

    Wow, what an epic day of fishing. Hope you guys make many more beautiful memories on the AI. You have the exact same kayaks I have. Do you feel the twist and stow struggling with turns compared to the up and down rudder as I do? Do you screw down the rudder? What seat is on the red kayak? I'm getting tired of sitting in the pool of water with the factory seats. Anyways, I love the adventure islands. I sold my 2018 outback after I purchased the 2007 AI. I don't know about you but I like the older AI better than the newer (2013) AI, the weight difference can be felt when you're transporting it. Tight lines

    • @motleypixel
      @motleypixel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for the late reply. I didn't know you can screw down a twist and stow? I do feel the newer up/down rudder is superior to the older twist and stow. Too bad the rear-end of the older twist and stow can't be replaced with the up/down rudder. That seat is an Attwood seat which they don't make anymore. This red kayak was my father-in-laws, he did the modification: th-cam.com/video/LDhqA-SGk0Q/w-d-xo.html

    Did you say your son is in an Outback? I’ve tried researching but it was unclear to me if the adventure island pontoon and trampoline fit the Outback, there’s a used one for sale in my area and it seems like it is the potential boat of my dreams

    Over $10,000 invested between both those 2 factory boats, I am creating a 16 ft. Hobie cat beach boat with 5 HP outboard, launch it from the beach like in the old days when I sailed Hobie cats, solid deck over the tramp, 2 retro jetson style aluminum swivel office chairs, full shade canopy, igloo cooler, all the gear, all for under $3,000. Bought the old used boat for $300 incl. galvanized trailer.

    • @motleypixel
      @motleypixel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good for you Robert. The red AI was gifted to me from a family member. The yellow AI was recently purchased for $2300. I don't need nor want a motor because that would add cost in two ways (motor/fuel and needed TX annual registration).
