Every time you got to an authentic taqueria, you ALWAYS should get the Salsa Rojo Picante, so so good. It's usually made with Guajillo and Arbol peppers and garlic and cilantro, home made. Remember Papacito, pour the sauce on the Taco don't double dip in the cup lol. Add salt as well, the salsa is usually too earthy, salt brings out the full flavor.

If you go to an HEB grocery store south of Austin, you'll probably see a packaged deal for sale which is Barbacoa (Mexican roast beef) with a pkg of Tortillas, lime, onion and cilantro with a Big Red. The Barbacao/Big Red combo is big in South Texas. Also, if you see a "Rolando's Super Tacos" stop in and get you a giant breakfast taco!

Was I the only one telling them out loud to "pour the salsa onto the tacos" instead of dipping? Maybe just me, but I've never tried to dip a taco into anything-- it's messy enough already, just pour a little salsa onto each bite and eat as fast as possible! Oh well, thanks for the laughs! So happy you guys enjoyed Texas tacos! 😄

I think Europeans think we dip stuff way more often than we do. We have a ton of dips. It is true, and fast food and restaurants will make them available... but if it isn't nuggets, fries or corn chips most adults don't dip. It is mostly to appease children, and most with chicken nuggets.

That chewy, slightly thicker texture of the tortilla tells you it's homemade, not mass-produced. Many of the mom-and-pop places will sell you a dozen or 2 tortillas to take home. They are so much better than the brand-name tortillas at the grocery store.

A tomatillo is not a kind of tomato.
A tomato is the edible berry of Solanum Lycopersicum, a nightshade commonly known as the tomato plant.
A tomatillo is an edible berry from the Physalis philadelphica or Physalis ixocarpa species. Tomatillos are small and green with a papery husk covering called a calyx. Like tomatoes, the tomatillo plant is part of the nightshade family but is more closely related to ground cherries (aka cape gooseberries) and the Chinese lantern plant.

@@luminiferous1960 I am fully aware they are different. I assumed that a Brit would not know what a tomatillo is so I tried to describe to them in a way they might relate. As a previous 20 year resident of Las Vegas with it large Mexican population and 10 years of visiting Mexico every year and having consumed most of my body weight in tacos al pastor/bistek, or carne asada, etc at La Merced or Mercado San Juan. But thank you for the clarification.

@@luminiferous1960 Wow. You must be really smart. How long did it take for google to load that info? While you are correct that tomatoes are considered to be a fruit or berry. They are so closely related to each other, that to argue they are actually totally different sounds like a distinction that would only matter to a botanist or biologists. You should have said, they aren't actually vegetables and left it at that. You seem like a bigot.

There is a way to fold a tortilla shell so it doesnt fall out. Fold the back of the tortilla up onto the toppings, 1.5 inches or so, then fold the left side over the top, and the right over that. Now you can hold the taco closed with one hand. It will seal up the bottom of the tortilla, so the fillings dont fall out. Also, we open the taco, and pour the salsa onto the food! Then do the fold up technique, and you're ready to eat! Yall are welcome!! Have a good one!

Only thing better than a food truck: our next door neighbors from Mexico who would get together and make hundreds of homemade tamales 5-6 times a year. We would get dozens of loaves of zucchini bread from a northern aunt and gift the extras to our neighbors. They would gift us tamales in exchange.
It may be an unpopular opinion where I live (Texas) but I would prefer them as neighbors (hard workers and the nicest) as opposed some lazy Karen causing trouble for their neighbors.

If I have a sauce for a sandwich or hamburger, I put it on the sandwich or hamburger. I don’t dip it in. Dipping is for small things like nuggets or french fries or wings. Dipping isn't typically a Mexican thing, I believe, except with birria tacos. The salsa, if used, is more typically put inside. It's definitely messy, so plates are probably a good idea.

SOOOO great to see your visit to TX include some authentic Tex-Mex food/comida! The first one close up looked like roasted poblanos or green pepps, sausage/chorizo, eggs and papa's/potatoes in a soft grilled tort and I'm sure some great sazon/spices. The 2nd one looked more like a picadillo/ground beef which does have a little drippings/juice fro the tomato and onion. A little advice...I see you grab the taco in the middle to eat and see how the fillings fall out the end. Always eat a taco by holding closed one end and eating from the other side. Everyting moves down to the UNopened end for a tasty last bite!

I'm a Louisiana boy, so Cajun, Creole, and Soul food is #1. But!!! Mexican, Tex-Mex, and the two styles in street style food is fire! I'm so jealous right now. After moving to Atlanta, it's not the same. I remember chasing down the taco and tamale trucks on Facebook. They give you a place and time where they are going to be and if you dont get there when they do, too bad so. They run out quick, that how good it is. Was Elana sleeping and missing out on all the goodness?

You don't typically dip the taco in salsa. You usually pour the salsa inside the taco. Or if you don't want to commit to just one kind of salsa (want to try different kinds like you are doing) you just pour a little bit of salsa on the end of the taco you are about to bite.

    It was wonderful.
I can't imagine what a full English breakfast tastes like in the UK.
Always go for the source to taste the sauce.
Tex Mex is king on the border of Mexico, where it originated from.

Remember H-Family, you can make Mexican Chorizo at home using ground pork (nothing cosmic about the rest of ingredients - you can look them up). Corn or Flour tortillas, scrambled eggs, and whatever else you’d like.
(Spanish Chorizo is a cured sausage I think, so don’t confused the two).

That salsa verde looks outstanding! I grow my own peppers and tomatillos in the summer. I will put that homemade salsa on tortilla chips, tacos, pork verde in the slow cooker or instant pot. Seriously, with Mrs H liking spicy stuff, you should look for tomatillos, if you can get them in the UK. Plenty of easy recipes on the internet to tweak the flavors. I am hungry just watching you guys eat!

We eat these a lot for breakfast at home. It's definitely one of the easiest to make at home things too. You can get the spices pretty much anywhere and eggs are the main ingredient. Plenty of youtubers have great recipes! The salsas should be easy enough to make at home as well. Not sure on the peppers, but you should be able to at least get jalapenos!

I live in west Texas and I get breakfast burritos about twice a week. I buy them from a Mexican man who has a one room shop. He makes his own flour tortillas. I always buy mine with breakfast sausage, eggs, potatoes, cheese and I pour my hot sauce all over the inside. We don’t really dip them.

If you're up for a bit of traveling, drive south to Port Isabel, TX and look for a place called Isabel's Cafe. They serve only Breakfast, but their large "con todo" (Spanish for "with everything") is something you will want to experience. The size of the tortilla alone will blow your minds.
Trust this old local who goes there at least twice anytime he's back home visiting family.
