Love this locomotive! Was lucky enough to ride in the cab of UP 844 from Trenton, MO to Liberty, MO about 10 years ago. Amazing experience.

A train is a train. The center of the driver wheels can also be blacked out so that the end of the axle doesn't show. It's still a nice locomotive straight out of the box. A quick pause-able look at the exploded diagram could be useful for up-coming buyers. The whistling will sound much better when it is running at a full gate.

Shinning time station and thomas was my childhood and i didn't know it was the 844 when i was kid.i thought it was the Union Pacific Challenger 4-6-6-4 class but they never showed the train up close so i could never make out the wheel set on it lol and shinning time did come back in early 2000 shortly after or before the movie but only lasted one season sadly.but i learned something new today about one of my favorite steam engine classes
8444 looks more like the real 844. But, nontheless still a sharp model

If I remember correctly (I was only about 3 or 4 when I saw it) 844 did have whitewalls in Shining Time Station
Correct first times James: it is called a tyre on a locomotive as well.
This is a stunning fef series model, Athearn Genesis produced a well detailed model equipped with esu sound decoders, this is an excellent UP 4-8-4, too bad this locomotive wasn't produced with the beautiful UP "greyhound" passenger paint scheme with this specific model release.

James, are those the walthers excursion passenger cars? I would love to get a set but it seems they're out of stock everywhere. I am also currently in the process of painting the white walls on my athearn 844. Also painting the rods to look more like the prototype as well. I can put a picture up when I have it back together if you would like to see it. Keep up the awesome videos!

I sure hope ESU Loak went on site to record the sounds of the bell and whistle from the real UP #844. It sounds so prototypical on an Athearn Genesis HO Locomotive. I hope they can put this sound on the Kato N scale UP #844 and #838.
ESU did record their sound file from the actual engine. Kato also sells their n-scale 844 and 838 with ESU Loksound installed. Take a look at their respective websites for more information. 👍

Great review as usual. I have an unrelated question but I don't have your email so I'm asking here. If you could only afford one, would you get the Bowser sd40-2(BC with the 4 ditch lights or a Scaletrains tier 4 GZeVo
Tier 4, nothing bad on Bowser but I have more interest in the Tier 4
Hah, a friend of mine at a model railroad club has one of these. However, he mentioned that the screw on the eccentric crank is attached too loose. I don't know if it was just his model or not, but I'm just sayin'.
MohawkNotMountain I’ve seen a few other videos of this, and the screw is loose on every single one and it drives me crazy.
This is tipical of Athearn product , the lack of quality asurance , Ive notice the same issue on 2 of the screws in this review , this why its binding on low speed steps
At speed step 2-3 onwards it should be ok , once again its not mentioned we dont want to up set the manufacturer do we ????
Whats the defference of 844 and 8444
Why is Athearn the only manufacturer, besides brass, that make the 844 in HO scale?

Locomotives do have steel tires that go around the wheel, So calling them white wall tires is correct.
I've only just managed to upgrade to a Rivarossi china fef-3 from the old Italy model let alone one of these!
The cost of models (and the cost of shipping them across the pond) is getting a bit silly.
Esu loksound has great motor control but the sound is a bit flat imo, especially the 'stack talk'.

How is it that after so many runs of this locomotive athearn still hasent redesigned those driver rods to be separate peices. There's a reason real locomotives didn't use a single long rod attached to all the drivers and they cause binding. And those extended pins look awful on an otherwise beautiful model.
Athearn did a horrible job on the color of the smoke box and fire box. How they thought that light grey is accurate bon the 844 model is beyond me. I just repainted mine to a more accurate color, and if you would like to see it check out my videos.
James, in the case of these locomotives, and the timeframe thay are supposed to reflect, details are huge. For the price Athearn is asking on these locomotives, there are too many things wrong and not accurate! That is unfortunate, as Athearn really just put lipstick on 10+ year old tooling with no effort whatsoever to update their model to look like the real locomotive and tender.

I've got an old Rivarossi 844 that looks better than that! At least the smokebox and firebox are painted the right color... how does Athearn expect to sell a model of an EXISTING locomotive that's painted SO WRONG...did they think nobody would notice??
