    We have a NYC one of these and it pulls very well and the smoke is the best I've seen from any locomotive of any gauge.

    This thing has serious pulling power!
    I bought a refurbished one (Bell mount is broke) for nearly half price. Pulls more than I could imagine something so small could.

      Did you buy it refurbished from the bli website, and if so did it work fine? Thanks

    Love the review, I think you are doing a great service to the hobbyists, James. I know this was reviewing a UP version, and I’ve noted that several have commented that it does follow the UP prototype. This is true for the Western Maryland version also. In fact the only thing WM about the model is the name on the tender. Head light position is wrong, class lights wrong, steam and sand domes completely wrong, whistle location wrong, bell location wrong, location of various other appliances wrong. I don’t understand why they would produce this model in WM livery with so many things wrong. I realize they can’t make every prototype 2-8-0, but when you are asking $450 list price for a locomotive you’d think they could get some of the details correct. Pretty disappointing that BLI isn’t taking the time to get it right.

      I agree my new Western Maryland 755 is very wrong I'm going to have to rebuild it or trade it in they can't even make the right class

    Years ago I had a locomotive that had smoke. Seemed to me it didn't last long. How long doesthe smoke last in this locomotive before you have to refill? Just curious. THX!!

      I have 2 BLI steamers with smoke, and it seems they run a pretty long time before you have to add fluid. You can also turn the smoke off periodically to conserve the fluid. I remember being somewhat amazed at how long they run before needing fluid, after having Seuthe units that seem to run out very quickly...

    Not really a UP 2-8-0, but I'm curious about its possibilities for modification. I need one or two UP 2-8-0's for my branch lines. 7 oz pull??? Eithr it had very effective traction tires or your meter is out of adjustment! Still nice to see BLI looking at some smaller power instead of mainline steamers all the time.

      Gary, the biggest hang up about this engine is the lack of a Vanderbilt tender, most of UP's 600 class engines had them. Bachmann Spectrum did their 2-8-0 numbered 618 with a Vanderbilt tender, it was a later release but I'm not sure if it has DCC or not. James mentions a traction tire tool and spare tires so that's why it has such great pull.

  • @ralphnoyes4366

    I'd love to see a comparison between this and the Bachmann 2-8-0.
    Are they approximately the same prototype? I think I read somewhere that there were two general types of consolidation, and that Bachmann's old (bad) trainset version was of the one the Spectrum version does NOT model now.
    So, is the BLI the same approximate prototype?
    I understand the Bachmann Spectrum approximates the WM consolidations.
    What about this BLI model?
    Can anyone help me with my utter ignorance on this?

    I got one of these for my first layout (nothing special, it’s a 7’ by 7.5’ rectangle) and arguably I could’ve done better in terms of track laying. Anyways, for some reason my 2-8-0 runs better backwards, than it does forwards. Can anyone help me with this?

    I can’t believe they fit smoke generator in this 2-8-0 but they can’t fit it on the light mikado seriously bli 😤

  • @georgeronn1263
    @georgeronn1263 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Does anyone know what prototype was used for this model? It does not match UP practice, and their WM version does not match WM practice. A quick Google search of 2-8-0 photos does not reveal any that I can find where the marker lights are on the pilot, and in many instances the other appliances are not correct also.

    • @jamesm6638
      @jamesm6638 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably the same deal as the spectrum 2-8-0, a bunch of generic 2-8-0 designs mashed together into something they can paste multiple roadnames on

    • @caseyjones745
      @caseyjones745 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I cannot believe that James or anyone beside you have commented on the "class lights/lanterns?" on the pilot. They perplex me, too..

    • @georgeronn1263
      @georgeronn1263 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@caseyjones745 yes and the frustrating piece for me is the response from BLI when I brought it to their attention -essentially they told me that they cannot match all the prototypes out there, that the production costs are too high. But at a price point of $450 retail, you’d think the unit would match some major prototype.

    • @caseyjones745
      @caseyjones745 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@georgeronn1263 I have seen lanterns left on a pilot, but never classification lights mounted that low. I looked at other BLI 2-8-0 reviews and no one even mentions the strange lights on the pilot. Did some Chinaman just attach them to the wrong spot!?! Someone please chime in with prototypical info.

    • @austinbrodzinski4444
      @austinbrodzinski4444 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bit late of a reply but they used the base of their PRR H10 for this model. Their H10 was a great model in terms of pulling power and this uses the same chassis, including the pilot mounted marker lights. They put a generic boiler on the model and generalized the model based on several different prototypes combined. Much like the newer Bachmann model, which is based on an Illinois Central prototype and was also made more generic.

    Good review as always bro. Nice job!Great loco overall, but the smoke sucks compared to an MTH product, after this many years you would think that every manufacture, at least the high end ones, would have smoke as good as MTH or better. Do they not pay attention to the market? Have they never looked at Dynamic smoke systems being made by other manufactures and private individuals? Maybe not....
