One of the most hauntingly beautiful rock ballads. What I love about rock music is the emotional pull of the lyrics. Hugely popular in the day! The Moody Blues.

Fred, that guy u were asking about in the front of the orchestra is called, the conductor... he is there to regulate and direct the orchestra. The sheet music everyone in the orchestra is reading, he is reinforcing through his actions. I used to be first chair, first violin in high-school, so I'm telling u what I know from experience. Great video, made me truly miss the magic of the orchestra! Luv y'all!

Yes! The conductor, and they help keep the time, as well as cue entrances of the instruments, can also set the mood as they play by directing emphasis of certain instruments or methods of play.... In school, you're right, not many look at the conductor, but college level and professional symphonies and orchestras definitely do. It comes with more practice

    • @1mmickk
      @1mmickk 2 ปีที่แล้ว

All I know about Conductors, is that they lift the Orchestra. A good Maestro takes the music to another level, a bad one,, makes the performance dull, I dunno how it works.
You would think there would be no need for one, but Im told its essential.

They started that band in the mid 1960's when they were your age. So when this concert was filmed they had been playing together 50 years. Personally I like the studio recordings better, but the Moodies are one of those bands that their live performances are nearly as good as the studio versions, Donald. 🙏😎

It's on their album "Days of Future Passed". It's a "concept" album. Artists would make an entire album with all the songs written around a theme. This album was about a day. It starts with a song about the morning and ends with the night....this song....Nights In White Satin. The song about the afternoon was also a big hit....."Tuesday Afternoon".

Y'all should give a listen to this entire album, Days of Future Passed. It was a masterpiece! The Moody Blues were big in the late 1960s. This album came out in 1967 and was recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra. It took you through the day, with each song being about a different part of the day. The songs are interspersed with poetry, which everybody at the time knew by heart. This live version was the shortened version of this song that used to play on the radio. Another hit off the same album was "Tuesday Afternoon." But to really get the full effect, you need to listen to the full album. It is amazing! This was the poem that should have followed this song:
    "Breathe deep, the gathering gloom
Watch lights fade from every room
Pensative people look back and lament
    Another day's useless energy spent.
    Entangled lovers wrestle as one,
Lonely man cries for love and has none.
New mother picks up and suckles her son,
Senior citizens wish they were young.
Cold-hearted orb that rules the night
    Removing colors from our sight
    Red is gray and yellow-white,
Yet we decide which is right
    And which is an illusion."
The orchestra played behind the speaker, enhancing the images of the poem. Seriously, listen to the full album!

This is one of the greatest love songs of all time. Justin Hayward wrote this when he was 19! You must listen to the whole album, Days of Future Passed, especially in the dark with candles and incense, adult beverage and a little herb. It’s a concept album about the day in the life of one man… and read the lyrics. On the album at the very end of this song a cat ran through the studio crashing the tubular bells and they decided to leave the sound in cuz it’s like the end of an orgasm. The band was named after Duke Ellington’s jazz song Mood Indigo. I first heard the album at a house party my freshman year at Rutgers Univerity in NJ 1972 and have loved them ever since. They’ve had a glorious career. Sadly the drummer Graeme Edge died last year and the flautist in 2018. The two lead guitarists now play solo tours. 🥰🎸🎶🇬🇧🇺🇸

Now i hope you go back and watch their video of this song, that they made in their 20s. Its was even beautiful back then, and they were *so young* then.

Great musicianship. The flute and orchestra give a lot of richness to the sound. The singer's voice is more limber and soulful in the studio version. Thank you.The white satin is referring to a shiny, soft fabric. It was nice to see you both relaxing to the music.

I wish I could play the violin again, my school had budget cuts by in the early 80's. The conductor lets you know which side or instrument section to play. He/she can tell you to play lower or higher. It's like directing traffic in a sense. (that's my best understanding )

LIsten to the original studio version, please! It's amazing and hauntingly beautiful, full of passion. Plus, it has a beautiful poem at the end that just really completes the song - you can't say you've heard, "Nights" if you haven't listened to that version..

I'm Just a Singer gives a great peek at what they looked like as younger performers.
And yes, they've been performing together a very long time, about 50 years at the time this was filmed. Ray Thomas (flute) and Graeme Edge (drums) have since passed, Justin Hayward (75), lead guitar & vocals, & John Lodge (76), bass, are still performing. John is on a solo tour this year.

Back in the day, they were young! This was a very haunting rock ballad, one of the first. The album version shows more of their talent and vision. As most 1970's and '80's rock ballads, they ended up on movies. And worse, commercials! Our favorite make out songs and "partying" songs on TV Lifetime movies or Ads, may they burn...

These guys were one of my fave bands growing up, when my main source of popular music was my Baby Boomer parents and classic rock stations. They were one of my first live concerts, when I was about 13, and I had the EXACT same reaction about their age - 30+ years ago!!! 🤣

SO glad my time on earth coincided with the greatest ever era of music in ALL genres, except rap.
Less said about that the better!

The whole side up to this song- on Days of Future Passed- is stunning. You MUST hear it. It goes through a day from morning til night. This is Night. Tuesday Afternoon is also amazing. I used to say this series of Moody Blues albums should have come with a little tab of acid attached. They ARE very deep and visual LIKE movies. This is the end of this side.

I was so worried the live version wouldn't be good enough but for all that it has the differences and 'imperfections' of a live performance I think this version does still do the song justice.
If you can believe it the recorded version is just a bit better but I'm glad you guys heard this song and enjoyed it!

This was the last song on their concept album "Days of Future Passed". Concept albums were written around a general theme and the theme for this one was "The Day". The first song is about the morning and this one about night ends the album. The song about the afternoon "Tuesday Afternoon" was another really big hit.

Moody Blues often used the London Philharmonic Orchestra for their performances and recordings. One of the few (maybe only) classic rock band to do this. Yes, more Moody Blues for sure….Nights in Whites Satin” as in satin sheets!!!
