It is argued whether or not it's about either the Mexican Revolution or the Spanish civil war. The writers of Fernando have stated that the song isn't about any specific war.

    • @merlball8520
      @merlball8520 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +32

@@SJ-GodofGnomes21 "The writers" of the song isn't ambiguous. It was Benny and Bjorn. It was about the Mexican Revolution. "The fateful night we crossed the Rio Grande" lyrics pinpoint the conflict. It's the only conflict in which "freedom fighters" crossed the Rio Grande in a notable war. Revolutionaries were hiding from the Mexican military until they gathered enough supplies and (with American help) regained their morale and then recrossed the Rio Grande to battle with the Mexican govt army.
They may have decided that the feelings of the soldier from whose perspective the lyrics are written transcended that one war, but the Mexican Revolution was the stage for the lyrics.

This song sounds more like a love song between a woman and a man, not about two soldiers who were men.
Why couldn't it be a man and a woman soldiers who were in love?
It is known in my family that my great great grandmother rode with Pancho Villa during the Mexican revolution.

This song was number one in every country on earth for about 1 million weeks. I stopped watching the Top 10 on Countdown because I knew what the number one song would be. My mother loved this song so much, it was one of the 5 songs we (my Dad, sister, and myself) picked for her funeral last year. And when it came on in the ceremony, I saw her singing the song while dancing around the house just as though I was 10 or 11 all over again. God, I loved you, Mum, and I'll miss you every day until I die, but I also miss that time in my life when songs were genuinely good and became a part of our lives.

When Frida (Anni-Frid) and Agnetha combine their voices, something called "the third voice" of ABBA emerges. One voice is almost indistinguishable from the other... it seems like someone different... they even produce a somewhat metallic sound sometimes...

A lot of people (like me) will claim they are not big fans of ABBA as it wasn't "cool" to like them. But if an ABBA song comes on the radio they will sing along and know every word.

That was certainly a phenomenon in 80s. Beegees as well. All because they were considered disco and because of the truly bad disco, the whole genre became uncool. But with the passage of time, most everyone has come around and recognized them as the great group they were.

The harmonies of course are fantastic. But in this song, what really stands out for me is the vocal delivery in the first verse, where Anni-Frid creates so many interesting sonic details, for instance the second time she sings 'Fernandoooo-o!' is so unique and memorable and iconic without being over the top - just love it!

When I was little, I just loved the vibe of this song - the drums, the flute, the slow verses, the upbeat chorus. When I got older and really listened to the lyrics, I loved it all the more. Such a beautiful story of older people reminiscing on their time fighting for their freedom. How alive everything seemed on that night, as it would when you realize that it might be your last. ABBA is a fantastic group with so many amazing songs, but Fernando will always be my absolute favourite of theirs.

I've been listening to ABBA since the 70s. I bought their albums and played them all the time. It's hard to imagine now, considering how popular they are, that there was a time in the late 80s-early 2000s that people were reluctant to admit that they liked/listened to ABBA. They weren't considered cool even though they were one of the top selling artists worldwide, of all time. I'm happy they are getting the recognition they deserve and so many people are finally admitting to loving them too. Here are some suggestions for more ABBAsongs to react to. Dancing Queen, Waterloo, Name of the Game, Angel Eyes, The Visitors, When All is Said and Done, Voulez Vous, Super Trouper, Does Your Mother Know, On and On and On, Lay All Your Love on Me, Under Attack, Thank You for the Music.

OMG! that one brought tears to my eyes, as a Kid I had a portable record player that ran on battery, and have not even thought of this song, since I had this in our family cabin on the Salmon River, Idaho. In the late 70's, one by one the Forest Service found ways to get all the old timers off the river, and one by one, burnt all the cabins down. It was the beginning of the 80's as we lost our cabin, and a couple years later, it was burnt to the ground, along with my old portable record player, and the few childhood favorite records I cherished as a kid, runnin nakid through paradice, then at night to lay out under the stars and listen to this great song. This song really F-d me up and made me cry guys. Its ok, was a good cry to remember such a simple time.

Commercially they ere struggling & came downunder to tour. They hit it big here & cracked the UK because of it.The rest,as they say,is history. ABBA is/was a once in a lifetime experience. I was about nine years old when I heard "Take A Chance On Me" for the first time and I was obsessed from that point on For every birthday, every Christmas, I wanted an ABBA album, or something ABBA related. There was just something absolutely magical about them and I don't know if it will ever happen again.
If you want to hear the guys (well, mainly Bjorn) taking the lead, check out "Why Did It Have To Be Me", "Does Your Mother Know" and "Another Town, Another Train." If you want some amazing disco grooviness, try "Voulez Vous" or "On and On and On." One of my favorites has always been "Hey Hey Helen." It's one that isn't as well known, but I think you'd really enjoy it

My strongest connection with an ABBA song is with "Does Your Mother Know?"-- not for any *real* reason other than cranking it loud and singing/dancing to it in middle school (almost 50 years ago). SUPER fun, but probably almost inappropriate in today's world (although the narrator in the song encourages keeping things chaste lol). It's one where Anni-Frid and Agnetha sing background to Björn's main vocals. If you give it a whirl, do not under any circumstances listen the Mama Mia version.

  • @OperaJH

Benny Anderson is a genius composer over any sort of orchestral genre. Ballads, rock ‘n’ roll, disco, symphonic arrangements of these pieces. All this melodic music sounds very simple, but musicians know how difficult the cords and the progressions are.
That is why their music stands out and will always be outstanding. This sound was unique because the vocal arrangements were so utterly tight. The instrumentation was all Benny‘s arrangements with some help from Björn who wrote wonderful lyrics for a person whose first language is not English. He’s a genius too. The girls as the boys said brought real singers to the table and their voices combine magically.
Charming, sweet, lovely but you should also listen to them now and after a 40 year absence since they broke up in in 1981.
In 2021 they put out their first album since then and it went to number one around the world on every pop chart list they watch. That is the magic of ABBA which makes them timeless. And now in London, they built a special stadium with lifelike avatars performing as they did in the 1970s. They did all the movements for these avatars, in real life, to be digitally incorporated into these Avatars and it looks as if they are right there on stage performing all their hits.
Listen to more ABBA and then in a few months, do the 2021 songs I Still Have Faith in You and also Don’t Shut Me Down.
Enjoy your ride because ABBA remains one of the top groups of all time and at one point had superseded the Beatles in number of records sold I think now it’s up to 400 million including the latest output after 40 years. Really still geniuses those two guys Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus. One of the best songwriting duos of all time.

ABBA's 1st hit, in 1975, was Waterloo. A very catchy tune, fabulous upbeat rhythm and vocals. It was the song that brought them fame, at least here in the states. Please react to THAT one next time you do an ABBA song.
Fernando always reminds me of the time in maybe 1998 when my coworkers and I used to break into song when one of us mentioned a technician named Fernando.
Clerk: "I just spoke with Fernando about that job."
Everyone: "I can hear the drums, Fernandoooooh..."
