They're older here but this is the group that started prog rock and the concept album. Justin Hayward has a timeless voice and the whole band is incredible.
Breathe deep the gathering gloom Watch lights fade from every room Bed-sitter people look back and lament Another days useless energy spent Impassioned lovers wrestle as one Lonely man cries for love and has none New Mother picks up and suckles her son Senior citizens wish they were young Cold hearted orb that rules the night Removes the color from our sight Red is grey and yellow white But we decide which is right And which is an illusion.... Correct me if I got any wrong. Doing that purely from memory.
The poem is titled: "Late Lament". What I've been told is that back in the day of real disc jockeys, and FM radio stations were actually using albums. On the original album Nights in White Satin was followed by Late Lament with a brief pause between the two tracks that was so short that many disc jockeys either missed the pause or deliberately let it play through both tracks making many listeners think it was one track. Even today a lot of people still refer to it as something like "Nights in White Satin - Full Version" or Nights in White Satin - Album Version"
1967. What a year for music. If you lived through it, then this song, performed with a full symphony orchestra, is just about the peak of happiness. So, if that's true, why does it move me to tears now? Lost youth? Frustration over what is considered music now? I don't know for certain but, damn, what an amazing performance. RIP Graeme Edge and Ray Thomas. Well done Justin and John. The Moody Blues....wow!
Deep well to explore here! Some of my favourites are "Isn't Life Strange," "I know You're Out there Somewhere," "The Other Side of Life," "Your Wildest Dreams," and "Tuesday Afternoon."
The lead singer, Justin Hayward is 76 years old and still touring, although without an orchestra. His voice is still as beautiful as ever. I got to see him live last year. The man’s still got it.
They were the first to use a full orchestra as their backup band. This incredible music is what happens when a bunch of talented, classically trained musicians decide to do rock music. Their albums were my first music purchases back in the day - I’m old.
This song is so hauntingly beautiful. Justin Hayward has a unique voice. He's incredible. The MB are the greatest band to come from Great Britain. I have this DVD. The whole concert is fire. 💙💙💙
This epic masterpiece will out live us all!! It was "born" in 1967 when I was 15 and I'm so happy its been part of my life since then!!! Completely exquisite!!💜💜🎵🎼🎶🎤🎹🎸🥁🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
@@Grammichal way ahead of you!! Definitely a favorite!!🤘🤘 Another of my Pavarotti favorites is his performance of Nessun Dorma at the Winter Olympics in Italy. SPECTACULAR!!💜💜 Funny how getting older allows us to appreciate things/music we didn't care about when we were young!! 🎶🎼🎵
Awesome reaction, I love Justin Haywards voice and the emotional impact it has, I grew up listening to him in my childhood and now in my twilight.. Subscribed.
And think Justin the lead singer is still performing today in person at 77 years old. So is John the bass player. Unfortunately the flute player and the drummer of passed away.
Also check out Marshall Tucker beyond Jethro, and a few others. Uses the flute. But this is another masterpiece, yet again. Leave it to the 70's. And most of the 60's of course.
I used to play the flute when I was in elementary school through high school (my dad was a musician who played violin, clarinet, saxophone and flute. He taught me the flute. Now I wish I had kept up with it and had learned how to play the violin as well (LOVE the violin) My dad was musically active until he was 98. He died at 102 years old in 2020. I MISS hearing my Dad play, and miss him. RIP dad, I love you.
What blessed memories. Such a sweet long life! Did you follow Iam Tongi from his audition on American Idol? “Monsters” by James Blunt - Iam’s dad was his musical mentor. ❤✌🏽❤️
🇨🇦 1967 DJ's, Record producers, nobody thought this a hit ! It was too long, it was too slow, you can't dance to it, there were many reasons they thought it would fail ! But, they all forgot one thing ! Sitting at home with your Girl, this seductive piece was perfect for making out ! LOL It is interesting to note that while the Orchestra is not part of the group (obviously) the music and arrangements were all written (for all instruments) by the Moody Blues ! Recommendations ? Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll band or Ride my See Saw !
I first heard this song driving in the snowy mountains of NC in 2003. My mom was playing the song while I was just trying not to slide off the side of the mountain in her Bonneville. Once we got to the top of the mountain, the music crested and I saw the view and it was magical. I’ll remember it for the rest of my life.
Some of the music that came from the 60' and 70's is timeless and will never be forgotten. Some of today's artists should take time to listen to the older music. No autotune there and the broad range of music is awesome.
1967 was the Fillmore Auditorium's peak year. I was there for every performance. Moody Blues were one of the best, along with Procul Harum, Big Brother and the Holding Company with Janis Joplin, Cream with Eric Clapton and arguably the best drummer in the world, Ginger Baker, the Association, Sopwith Camel, and the list goes on and on. Bill Graham introduced Carlos Santana around that time, as well. Music was inspiring then. Our generation told stories and protested the worst in society. Peace and love were our mantra.
Love love love this! Goosebumps every single time I see this video of this beautiful, amazing song and performance! Only thing missing is the Late Lament poem!
I knew you would be in Awe with this band & lead singer, his voice hasn’t changed…” Nights in White Satin “ is my favorite song from The Moody Blues!👍👏👏👏💜🔥🔥🔥
You must hear the album version with the poem, Late Lament, at the end of the song. If you only hear one other MB song, make it "Question" from the album A Question of Balance.
Remember laying in bed at night at a little girl in the 70s listening to this on the radio. They didn't play it much during the days because of the length so I would stay up late with the radio playing softly by my bed. Many a night I woke up to this song and songs like Starship Troopers by Yes. FM music at night in the 70s/80s was amazing.
Would love to hear them do the entire album in a concert setting. Question, The Voice, I'm Just a Singer In a Rock and Roll Band, The Other Side of Life, Your Wildest Dreams, Ride My See-Saw, Tuesday Afternoon you will enjoy them all.
The poem at the end is named "Late Lament" and was originally spoken by Mike Pinder and written by drummer the late Graeme Edge. Listening to Nights in White Satin without the Late Lament at the end is like you're missing out on something very special. In this version, the concernt was opened with Late Lament and is completely missed in the song. This version was released in the 1970s on the album "The Very Best of the Moody Blues". th-cam.com/video/Q2VH5-rqWzI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=FOzPyYq6TysQlzzG
Enjoyed watching your reaction to “Nights In White Satin” by The Moody Blues. I was in High School when they first broke out. After I graduated, I went to see them live and I haven’t been the same since! For another Moodies song I would suggest “Question” from either the Albert Hall or the Red Rocks Amphitheater. It is an anti-war song, but you wouldn’t know it unless you listen intently to the lyrics.
I’ve always loved the Moody Blues and I saw them live decades ago… incredible always! “Question” is one of my favor songs by them, but I love ALL their songs. Their full albums go from one amazing song to the next… You also would love “Your wildest dreams” and “The Voice.” Actually I could list all their songs! Thank you! Looking forward to more Moody Blues! ❤
I was born around the time that album came out loved pop until i heard this song as a young teenager this song changed my whole musical taste ..cried when i first heard this song and still cry now a beautiful masterpiece ..Justins voice is incredible..still , musical talent is incredible .❤
Yes, time for a deep rabbit hole dive into the Moody Blues. In your wildest dreams The story in your eyes Tuesday afternoon I'm just a singer in a rock 'n' roll band Ride my see-saw That should get you started.....
My favorite band of all time! So many great songs! Fans will suggest live versions of their songs (likely from this same concert) because they were so amazing in concert, but I suggest you listen to studio versions when discovering them. My faves would be Question and I'm Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band. One exception: listen to the live version of Legend of a Mind - Ray killed it every time!
The first time my husband saw them they were "stripped down," no orchestra, and he said while it was good it was sorely different in a not so good way. That was in the middle of the seventies. When he saw them again, twice in the nineties with full orchestra, it was fabulous!! One of our favorite bands from back in the day! Glad you enjoyed it!
This version is beautiful. I just wish they had included the Late Lament. Check out “Question,” by Moody Blues. You should check out “Silence And I” performed by Alan Parsons Project live at the Proms.
One of the things I watch your videos for is your excellent analysis, but also for the sensitivity with which you understand the meaning in a strictly artistic sense of the music of other generations, each generation captured a lot of content in music, not just musical. , but social and language beyond words, I congratulate you for being so receptive.
Agree with you about the flute. I was teen in the 70's and it seemed more popular at the time. Flute music is gorgeous, haunting, and many things. If you haven't already check out mama's and papa's music. Can't recall which songs. I'm sure there's many more from back in the day.
From the same concert at the Royal Albert Hall, look at the song "Question" (actually it is the song that follows this one!). I think you'll find that to be great as well
I wish there was a "❤" button to give. That version was incresible 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 The wnd reminded me of something one would hear at the end of an epic old time Western movie. Very cool! Great reaction, Salvo!
I was lucky to have lived in Seattle and saw The Moody Blues twice in the 1980s. I always had the binoculars with this song, had a crush on Justin. They were magical and took you on an adventure. ❤
Their last big hit "I Know You're Out There Somewhere" is a great pop song, as is "The Voice" from their 1981 album "Long Distance Voyager" is wonderful. For great orchestration, listen to the entire "Days of Future Passed" album which was the album that invented Classical Rock music. Other songs in the classical mode, "Candle of Life" and "Eternity Road". For a badass rock song, check out "The Story in Your Eyes" and for a beautiful song, check out the live version from the same concert of "For My Lady" which is one of their most beautiful songs ever. Another beautiful love song is "Forever Autumn" by Justin Hayward.
I've not heard this version before! Thank you very much Salvo! I didn't notice the difference until you paused it the last time, then I noticed the voices were off a little bit, but it didn't matter to me either! The sound quality was excellent! "The Story in Your Eyes" is an excellent Moody Blues song to listen to! Please check that one out!
Listen to the whole album start to finish. It’s a trip. Literally. ❤
One of the greatest pieces of music ever created
Stunning after all these decades. What talent.
They're older here but this is the group that started prog rock and the concept album. Justin Hayward has a timeless voice and the whole band is incredible.
I saw the Moody Blues once. However, in 2 months, Justin Hayward is playing in my city. 🤩
I can't think of Justin Hayward with out thinking of the War of the Worlds concept album. "Forever autumn " was one he did on that album
Sargent Peppers was the original concept album.
70's kid growing up listening to this. I feel so privileged to hear this back then and now.🙏🏾✨♥️♥️
I put this up there with "Whiter shade of pale," from around that same era, classic songs that have an almost spiritual quality to them.
Yes that’s how they feel to me too ❤
Just one of the greatest songs ever. And the poem that follows it on the album is stunning.
I LOVE that poem and am always disappointed when it's not included. It just rounds out the song so well.
Breathe deep....
"Senior citizens wish they were young......" That one applies to me.
Breathe deep the gathering gloom
Watch lights fade from every room
Bed-sitter people look back and lament
Another days useless energy spent
Impassioned lovers wrestle as one
Lonely man cries for love and has none
New Mother picks up and suckles her son
Senior citizens wish they were young
Cold hearted orb that rules the night
Removes the color from our sight
Red is grey and yellow white
But we decide which is right
And which is an illusion....
Correct me if I got any wrong. Doing that purely from memory.

Lost youth, yes but this song brings back so many good memories.💖
Yes I feel those tears and Chillzz and such sadness.
We were definitely blessed to have actually been there!!! I'm grateful every day for that!!!😉🎵🎼🎶🎤🎹🎸🥁🔥🤘🤘🤘
Deep well to explore here! Some of my favourites are "Isn't Life Strange," "I know You're Out there Somewhere," "The Other Side of Life," "Your Wildest Dreams," and "Tuesday Afternoon."
Rest in peace to Ray Thomas who is the flute player here.
Goosebumps every time. Amazing that Justin wrote that when he was 19 years old. They married poetry and music in a very powerful way.
And that sir, is how it’s done
Even with all of the great music of the 60's this song stood alone. Hearing it with an orchestra? Ascension.
❤
The lead singer, Justin Hayward is 76 years old and still touring, although without an orchestra. His voice is still as beautiful as ever. I got to see him live last year. The man’s still got it.

I'm 72 and was part of the British invasion in the 60's and 70's! That was MUSIC then! My generation! Woodstock!
It amazes me that they are so much older and still sound so authentically like the studio version. What a great performance. 🌺✌️
Entire concert is available on you tube.
Justin Hayward, the lead singer, wrote this song including the original orchestral score at 19 years of age.
❤❤ I know you're out there somewhere and In my wildest dreams will not disappoint
The way you sat there mesmerized by the orchestral ending was priceless.
Another great song from the boomer generation.
In Your Wildest Dreams is one of my favorite Moody Blues songs.
PURELY BEAUTIFUL!!!! I SAW THEM LIVE AND THEY DID NOT DISAPPOINT!!👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

All good recommendations here! This hits my top favorites from them.
Moody Blues recommendation: “I’m Just a Singer (in a Rock and Roll Band).” Or “Question.” or “Dear Diary.”
Have seen them 4 times - twice with a symphony supporting them. All were great shows.
This is my favorite group of all time.
And mine!
I'm loving you choices of songs thank you.😊
Been there ,done that. So wonderful to hear someone giving this the airing it deserves.
I love the moody blues. Loved them from when I was growing up.I was born in 1967. Jeez I’m old. Lol 😂
You were three when I saw them the first of four times.
I still get chills! The poetry at the end of the song was missing here - "Breathe deep......" Beautiful.
