I just ordered the pixel 8. I had the 4a5g and no longer get security updates as of November. The 8 was discounted about $150 so I figured it was a good time to trade up. The pixel 8 pro, even discounted was going to run over 900 (for 256g) and the extra features didn’t seem worth paying almost 350 more, at least for my uses. I figure I will pay less and then see what the 9 or 10 offers.
im in the same exact situation. Finally looking to upgrade from my 4a 5g and cant decide to go all out for the 8 Pro or the 8 and the discount is still active. I cant decide
@@abdFA510 so far it’s been good. It’s definitely got a bit more pep than my 4a5g though it doesn’t feel like a quantum leap forward, but they were both running android 14 so maybe that’s it (maybe phones are just getting as fast as they can be now so it’s not so noticeable unless it’s really cpu intensive stuff). So far I do kind of miss the back side fingerprint reader but the one under screen works pretty well and with face unlock as well it’s not a huge loss. The screen on the 8 is very nice and my favorite thing so far is how bright it is in the sun, I can see everything clearly which I couldn’t say for the 4a. I work outside a lot so it’s been what I noticed lol. Also it’s the same screen size as my 4a but a smaller frame so it fits better in the hand a bit. Battery is pretty good and I use the phone a lot for gps (I spend a lot of the day driving so it’s screen is on for hours), streaming music, and communicating with work pretty much all day. It would last most all day I think but I always charge it when I’m driving if it gets around 30-40%. All in all a nice phone I think, though I’m glad I spent less and got the 8, I didn’t need the pro features Camera is good but all pixels have good cameras, though I can say they seem better, sharper with more detail maybe. I use the macro mode a lot for work to take images of circuit boards and stuff, it does a pretty good job seeing as how it’s doing it through software.
@@streetside2833 I got the 8 (256gb) for 600 and I’m more than happy. Glad I didn’t spend 1000, as there isn’t much the pro offered that I’m missing. The better cameras almost got me but I don’t take huge amounts of pictures and the 8 on its own is a nice improvement from the 4a. I basically decided that if I had any reservations about spending more it was better to just spend less, I’d rather miss out on a few features than wish I had $400 dollars back
In the US the P8P 256gb is $809. Trade in value of the 4a5g is $150 ($42 if putting it toward the P8). Not sure if that's relevant for anyone reading this. But my issues with the 4a5g, the only Pixel phone I've owned, is the reason I've hesitated. Sooo many bugs, hiccups, random glitches. Note that I've always run Nova launcher.
Your lucky , either that or you are in a room with good light and the face I'd is working in the background to make the finger print sensor look more competent. And this i absolutely know happens on my 8 pro. At night time in poor light the finger print sensor on mine is lucky to work one in ten , and face just doesn't work full stop. I'm sure if you spend most of your time in good light or bright conditions, you probably have a decent experience. If you are not then I really don't like your chances. I like a lot about the Pixel, but unlocking the phone for me pisses me off no end to the point I have engaged the pattern unlock .
@@mikldude9376 The only time i struggle is when my hands are wet or the screen has droplets from the rain. But other than that I don't usually struggle with finger print. I live in northern part. During winter is always dark. So no I don't always have a well litt place to use the face unlock. I think you need to pre-register your finger print. Maybe 2x on your dominant hand. Pre-register if you have just put on a screen protector.
at the pixel 8 pro's price point fingerprint scanner is not a thing to be worried about anymore. i got a galaxy s24, using just the tip and it opened just fine
@@trinhnguyenluong4485 I am not worried about the fingerprint scanner of the Pixel 8 at all. It just uses a different scanner technology which requires yoy to scan the whole fingerprint. Anyways Pixel 8 pros face recognition is fast and very reliable and I can use it to authenticate bank transaction. So fingerprint scanner is barely used nowadays.
I like the smaller screen size of the regular Pixel8, the matt sides and the colors of the phone. But 8 Pro has the telephoto camera and I like to shoot with it and the matt back.
I only had issues with fingerprint sensor for the first few weeks. After December update all the issues are gone and I don't think I had an issue with unlocking for more than a month now.
@@switex8286 it's been great for me. It could be better of course but I am using it a lot, for personal use and for work as well. So I usually have to plug it in for a little bit during the day. But when I have an easier day with maps, bluetooth, music streaming, taking photos and using normal apps, it handles it all like a champ.
Really good video and as a Reg Pixel 8 owner I would say it's better to get the Pixel 8 pro for the battery life . The reg 8 is just ok it's doable most days but you start to wonder if your going to make it if you have a long day.
Telephoto lenses are different gravy imo. I was recently in a coldplay concert and whilst I took awesome photos and videos on my iphone 13, damn I missed having a telephoto lens. My friend on the other hand had an iphone 15 pro max and he took brilliant pics from his seat, that was far away from where Chris Martin was performing.
I'm normally a small phone guy so I bought the regular 8. But I didn't like it. Battery life was terrible and the other than that stood out to me was the build quality was rough. The edges on pieces felt either rough or like they didn't line up well. Just felt unrefined. I never had that bother me before as much as it did on a phone before. But I went to the 8 pro. Love it. Never looking back. I couldn't be happier with it.
@@jejunamja i rarely could make it through a day with my regular 8. On my 8 pro I end most days with 50% battery life and in heavier days I end with about 35%.
I never had an issue with the finger print scanner with my P8P. I recently switched to iOS with iPhone 15 Pro; I usually do so every 3 to 4 years for a year or so..man I miss my P8P :(
I never have problems with finger print sensor either. It's a user error. Look at how he presses the fingerprint sensor. He just uses the tip of his finger instead if the actual finger print part.
@@danuka608i have had the s23 ultra, I don't see any difference between the two, the pixel 8 pro is just as fast unlocking with my fingerprint as the s23 ultra for me, no difference between the two.
How is the rear camera holding up so far ? 🤔 I heard over the last year especially on TH-cam reviews with the rear camera shattering due to temperature 🌡 changes is this true? Thanks 👊🏻
Pretty good video except for when you are purposely trying to make the fingerprint fail by using the tip of your finger or when lifting your finger extremely fast. In reality, it rarely fails, as long as you hold your fingerprint (not finger tip) until it unlocks (which admitely it's a bit longer than other flagships).
Dimensions of the phone is 5.93" and 6.4" inches for 8 and 8 pro respectively but screen size which is measured by the distance of one corner of the screen's viewable area to the one diagonally opposite of it instead
I only have one issue with the Pro. It's to big. I prefer a more pocket and one hand friendly phone. If I could have the Pro at the same size as the regular 8 I would buy it asap.
They're shrinking the pixel 9 pro to 6.5, allegedly. I don't like the change. I usually have multiple phones in use throughout the week. There is no 'goldilocks' sized phone, really, because you're always going to prefer one device and screen size for different purposes. I would rather have a small, compact device around 6.1 inches and another around 6.7 for more content consumption. I would like if they put the best camera not only on the largest phone. That shit is getting old.
Great video Sam! Helping me make a good purchase decision here, much appreciated! Also 2:52 - Very funny... "not bad but not great" *fingerprint sensor fails twice oops
I'm pretty sure what's happening with video boost is that it's actually producing two separate videos files simultaneously and is therefore limited as to the quality of the file that's immediately available. It's either that, or it's capturing the one very high bit-rate file that's used for the boosted version, and downscaling it in near real time which seems very unlikely. I vaguely remember reading that this was the reason it was limited to the main sensor (Samsung GNK) as it's specially designed to be able to capture two files at the same time.
Pixel 8 and 8 pro are decent phones. However, The pricetag is outrageous. It is basically 2020 technology. Yes, 2020 hardware is plenty for your day to day use, but the hash truth is, the 8 pro is not worth more than 500 bucks.
If your 6 Pro is working still good over all I would wait till pixel 9 or 10 comes out! You will still get android 15 and security updates till October 2026 🙃🥳
My biggest problem with 8 - and turned out with all above 6 - that they do not work with headphone DAC. I love listening to music and have a moondrop dawn pro and it is pretty frustrating not being able to use it with the phone
In googles marketing of Tensor, they made it seem that Pixel’s AI features are capable because of said Tensor custom chip, but after seeing Samsung on their new S24 with the 8 Gen 3 being able to do most if not all the same capabilities then it startles me. Just as you said, Tensor is a midrange chipset and thus the 8 series are incredibly overpriced.
You should watch in-depth text reviews side by side comparison between The Google pixel Pro 8. AI features and Samsung's AIS features. The Samsung AI features cannot touch the pixel 8 Pro. Although Samsung 's live translation for phone calls is clearly innovative in itself. Everything else is being copied from Google, including the new Google search feature. The 8 pro is still king of AI features and they won't be charging you to use all of these features starting December of 2025 like Samsung is doing. Check out In Depth Tech Reviews. The video is a literal in depth "side by side" comparison with both phones in hand.
@@ChasingStateyour reply is trying to distract from what the comment says. The commenter didn't say that Samsung was innovative on AI features, they said that Samsung is able to use the 8gen3 chip to run the AI features which exposes that Google saying that Tensor is required for this stuff as a lie or at best a misdirection. I'm not commenting on who has the best AI features or who invented each feature, and neither is the first commenter. You missed the point. Google could have used the better chip and modem but they chose not to and this is the sole reason I, and many others, are not using the Pixel series. Especially the network modems. They suck, and the main chipset is now also revealed to suck compared to the asking price because it is NOT required to run the features as Google claimed.
If requiring a chip that is modified specifically for AI and machine learning is a midrange chip in other's perspectives, then that in itself is merely an opinion. Because efficiency rather than oversaturated power without complete optimization of AI is a gimmick in itself. Subpar is bringing Ai features to a phone without a high level of optimization with it's hardware. As of right now, a few of these features coming out of the S24 series are clearly gimmicks when compared to the Google 8 series line up. Efficiency and optimization is key. Google having control over its chip design is what allows the phone to run AI CORE so efficiently.
@@seapanda-117Like the previous commentor stated, you should watch In Depth Tech's videos. In summary, while the Galaxy S24 Ultra can perform a lot of the same tricks, the results are far from similar. The Pixel does a much better job in every test. Also the Galaxy S24U has not caught up with picture quality either. That presentation Samsung gave was full of fluff and the S24U is looking like a dressed up S23U with exclusive software updates that don't work nearly as well as they stated.
Except the Pixel can do even more AI better AI models. S24 AI features are a let down. Pixel you got face swap, video boost, real tone, better Magic editor, photo unblur, call features etc.
In a short term you may be right, but for long term Google can have a better profit margin with its own chip and provide a cheper phone instead. In the end we're all looking for good prices, right?
The simple difference between the two is this, the oneplus 12 has a slightly better battery than the pixel 8 pro, probably an extra 1 hour or so. oneplus 12 faster charging, and the oneplus 12 has a better processor. The pixel has a much better camera, longer updates and faster updates than the oneplus 12, the pixel has AI features, Google translation is awesome, Google has a better Android stock expierence. So what's the best phone to get between the two? If like me you can pick up a mint condition pixel 8 pro 256gb for £600 then definitely the pixel 8 pro is the better buy, but the pixel 8 pro at full price compared to the oneplus 12, I would say the oneplus 12 is the better buy. But I am very happy with my pixel 8 pro to be honest.
It's so funny to me how some simple apps can't do split screen but GamePass and TH-cam can run two high running apps together side by side. It's so cool lol.
I'd say for anyone with a 6 or 7 series phone to hold out for the 10/10 Pro since that will be the first TSMC made Tensor and hopefully with a better modem in tow to go with it and closer to being a flagship. I'm plenty happy with my 8 Pro as I was the 7 Pro but I don't push my phone too hard but I wouldn't say it's a $1000 phone, more like $800 especially when there are Chinese SD 8 Gen 3 based phones available for $600.
I wish you mentioned AI features, since 8 PRO has more such Gemini NANO and other AI features, but I noticed that no one does in their reviews. Maybe it's not an area of interest :)
I was really hoping for more. We still haven't received Zoom Enhance and Video Boost was a complete disappointment (due to may of the reasons you mentioned). Editing photos is really slow, thanks to everything being processed in the cloud. Signal strength and battery life aren't much of an improvement over last year. Other than the Pixel specific features like hold for me and call screen, it looks like Samsung may have beat them at their own game this year with the S24 series. My S23 Plus was the smoothest phone I've ever used and it still got great battery life.
Thanks for the great video. My old P4 died so now I'm trying to decide between the 8 or 8 pro. After your video I'm leaning towards the pro. :) Question to any 8 Pro owners, is it possible to operate with one hand?
Hi would you recommend the pixel 8 pro I'll be coming from a one plus 10 pro will I notice any difference between the two, I'm also looking at the S24 ultra
For me, the hype over AI is totally OTT. Many Pixel features are rarely used; even if they arrive in the UK, most still need to. Clearly, with a stagnant mature smartphone market, OEMs are pushing AI to market their devices to sell more (fair enough), but the reality is that a few months after you buy into that, you will wonder what all the fuss is about! I am a basic smartphone user, so no gaming, video editing and such like, so the Pixel 8 Pro is more than enough for me performance-wise, and its price makes it much better than the S23U in 2023 (£400 cheaper in the UK before great Pixel deals). I would recommend it. It has no thermal issues, battery life is 8-9 hours SOT over two days of use, and day-to-day use is smooth and fast.
Samsung doesn't make the best AI features exclusive to their highest price flagship phone like Google does. Google's top AI features are restricted to U.S. only while Samsung's are available wherever Samsung phones are sold.
Why? If you're in the US, the pixel 7 was usually cheaper on sale than the 7a. I picked up the 7a to have as a smaller second or third device and am disappointed in the fluidity. The 7 didn't stutter as much and they have the same chip. Dunno if they're throttling it or what. Hope the 8a doesn't suffer from the same issues. Camera is pretty solid so yeah, if you're going by MSRPs or just really, really want a plastic backed phone, then the A series is the best option. There's not enought distance between the middle child and the A series imo though. If the price for the A stays at $450 (highly unlikely) then it would be an absolute steal though.

There are a few important things left out in this video : the speakers and the selfie camera! The selfie in pixel 8 is terrible. Check the comments online about blurred pixel selfie cameras. Also, coming from a pixel 3 xl, the speakers are noticeably worse. The pixel 8 has less stereo width and bass. Sad!
yep sadly it still does. did alot of researching and apparently it heats up because of 5G. like we're in 2024 google phones are still not optimised for 5G. don't even get me started on the battery backup
Nice video. I keep waiting on someone to convince me to switch to a pixel. They have so many good things about them but my galaxy phones have always had good cell service while pixels on the same.plan in the same place have relatively poor service.
Same. I want to change for some reason that I don't know why. I think buying a Pixel is mainly because I like to use Google Pay. Might wait awhile. S24 so expensive.
I pixel 8 that I have is always utilizes 7gb and ram and most of the time even scrolling feels laggy for me and have to restart the device to make it run smooth. I only installed like 2 more apps that what I got in the pixel 8 really disappointing in that way so far for me.
Great Video I am currently on my 4th consecutive Samsung and thinking of changing because Samsung just tends to be very Colourful and Vibrant which makes the photos Unrealistic As far which of the two Google Phones to go for I am still confused as to is there a significant Difference between the photos they take in Equal Conditions?
The Pixel 8 won't get Gemini Nano and Google already came out and said it has hardware limitations for OS updates after 5 months. If you get a Pixel, go for the 8 pro and make sure you check the quality of the hardware.
I’m guessing he just stood each phone up individually, took a short clip of them while moving the camera around in a slight arc/circle motion, masked them out, and dropped the cut out shots into the chart.
I've had a Pixel 8 256GB for about a month. I had a Moto G60S before upgrading. I miss the 6.7" screen for multiple window, multi window is a near useless feature on this 6.2" screen size and the implemention with the rounding of the top/bottom of the 2 windows does nothing to help this. I liked the Moto screen more in general, plus its battery and charging. The camera quality on this Pixel 8 is much better, but nothing about this phone suggests it should be as expensive as its asking price. It has choppy performance/app launching and scrolling, bad battery life, and other quirks like the keyboard occasionally but too often opening and staying on screen for some reason after exiting out of apps. I only got it because I'm effectively paying £290 for it new, where its new asking price is/was about £699, and the Moto seemed to be stuck on Android 12 without any further updates. My Moto G60S cost £190 2 years ago, and I got £60 selling it, it was a good phone. Not sure I'd consider a Pixel again in future, this far into the Pixel lineage it shouldn't have been the gamble it turned out to be.
I have a pixel 8 and as good as these phones are, I'm now considering getting the OnePlus 12. Everything is great on the pixel 8, except the battery life. Plus the slow charging speeds.
I got the regular 8 and i love it but not gonna lie i kinda wish i had the telephoto lens and better macro capabilities but alas i had a hard time justifying an extra $250 just for that.
I bought the pixel 8 and 8 pro I returned both of them. I found scrolling and jankyness on these phones outrageous. I have been a pixel user for a long time now too. I was shocked by it and am surprised more reviews haven't picked up on this. I found this on 3rd party apps more but also in a lot of google apps like TH-cam and gmail too. Hopefully they will improve in the future and return to snapdragon as tensor is crap.
Tensor is a midrange chip for sure. Google just marketed the hell out of it to try justifying the phone price and to compete with the other big boy brands.
My daily driver is the 8 Pro 128GB using a custom rom and for all my google services apps that is a spare phone is a pixel 7a for whenever I need to do any google only related things like commenting on TH-cam 😅 as the custom rom has no google services or play store on it period.
I'm sorry to have another little gripe , but the pixel 8 series often is branded as the smartest smart phone , and maybe in some areas it is , but ....... Using the speak aloud feature to read an article, lets say you iniate this in portrait , if you turn it to landscape while its reading it either stops or re starts from the begining, ok so you are in landscape and its reading the article fine , if you get halfway through the article and the phones display time out expires , it just stops reading ! How smart actually is it ? Even my allegedly dumb iphone can at least finish treading out aloud the article before shutting the phone down ! Too me , it is these small quality of life smarts and conveniences that make a smart phone smart and something i want to use. Pixel gets some other things right , but it still needs improvement in some areas.
You deliberately use the finger print badly, and then claim its unreliable. This is dishonest of you. Put your entire finger over the sensor and leave it for 2 seconds. Works for me 100% of the time. (Not subscribing).
Last good pixel was pixel 5 . New ones only makes sense if you exclusively live in cold areas cause as soon it gets warm , you will have problems, not to mention it has probably the worst modem in any similar priced phone. Good cameras can only carry you so far , also googles international market team needs a proper wake up when it's priced more than S23 / iphone15 in lots of countries lol

Is it getting hot? My Pixel 6 pro heavily throttles charging if you're using it a lot because of heat. I actually created a Magisk mod to allow it to charge while it's hotter because it was just ridiculous on hot days.
G3 a mid range chip? It has last gen top of the line ARM cores, same core in the S23 Ultra and every other flagship X3. As a tech reviewer with an audience you should know this BTW you need to properly place you finger on the scanner, not the edge of your thumb🤦♂ Video Boost has been a game change for me no complaints. If you want the necessary data needed for Video Boost there at all time, you are gonna run out of storage in no time. Not a very well thought out video imo.
The fact that Google can keep up with iPhones and Samsung with performance is incredible Also when you stop and think that a pixel 8 pro can cost you $800 compared to $1300-1500 on Samsung and iPhone and yet still give you much better pictures than those 2 phones. Just got the phone around a couple of months ago. The phone is great but it is not for me because of the following reasons. : 1. I overlooked a very important aspect that 5g does not work despite of the phone supporting the frequency bands if the network/country is not approved by google. The VoLTE and Vo5G also does not work. I travel a lot for work in and around Africa and Asia and other than the official supported networks/countries the phone's software limits the network to 4g. 2. Honestly the network reception/stability was better in my older phone(One plus 8T). 3. A number of features are region locked to supported regions. 4.The service support network to repair the phone is not extensive and is limited. For top dollar I expected a little better. The above are the So my suggestion is that if you travel a lot, this phone might not be for you for the above reasons. Will definitely be looking to replace it in a couple of years if things do not improve. P.S:I have copy pasted the same comment from a number of other popular reviews in the hope of preventing from making the same mistake I did.
My main issue beyond the Tensor G3 in these phones is really the front cameras. From everythng i've seen in both video and images, google seems to have opted for a very soft high contrast processing which usually makes the images and video look both beautified but also eyes and face shadows look extremely unnaturaly dark. Like the person is possesed or something.

Telephoto lenses are different gravy imo.

I've had this phone since day 1. I still prefer pixel over Apple or Samsung
Agree! Me for example if I had one I'd use the face unlock :)
Fr bro I can tell since I upgraded from the Pixel 6 to the Pixel 8 and the 8 fingerprint sensor is really good and responsive
The pixel 8 and 8 pro have a screen size of 6.17" and 6.7" respectively, not 5.93" and 6.4".
Dimensions of the phone is 5.93" and 6.4" inches for 8 and 8 pro respectively but screen size which is measured by the distance of one corner of the screen's viewable area to the one diagonally opposite of it instead
The most complete review I've seen. Just awesome.
All your pro battery screenshots were on wifi while 8 was on 5G, doesn't that count for some difference as well?

My biggest problem with 8 - and turned out with all above 6 - that they do not work with headphone DAC. I love listening to music and have a moondrop dawn pro and it is pretty frustrating not being able to use it with the phone
So the DAC is useless on pixels? I was confused between picking up the moondrop chu II with 3.5 mm with a DAC or the type c version.
@@jithumohan5572 yeah, basically unuseable sadly. Some work tho, a few person wrote here in the comments what products work for them
In googles marketing of Tensor, they made it seem that Pixel’s AI features are capable because of said Tensor custom chip, but after seeing Samsung on their new S24 with the 8 Gen 3 being able to do most if not all the same capabilities then it startles me.
Wish google switches back to snapdragon chip in the future for both performance and battery life.
In a short term you may be right, but for long term Google can have a better profit margin with its own chip and provide a cheper phone instead. In the end we're all looking for good prices, right?
Would love to see a detailed comparison between the pixel 8 pro vs oneplus 12 pro
If like me you can pick up a mint condition pixel 8 pro 256gb for £600 then definitely the pixel 8 pro is the better buy, but the pixel 8 pro at full price compared to the oneplus 12,
I would say the oneplus 12 is the better buy.

S24 Ultra owerprised better 8 pro
Aren't some of the specs wrong? When I look it up, the display sizes are 6.2 & 6.7 inches and the brightness of the Pro is 2400 nits.
I am a Pixel 7 user in Mexico. Yes, it was salty. 😢
Is it worth the upgrade from pixel 7, Sam??
not at all, the only really major change is the chipset
If you go for the 8 pro I would say definitely. It's such a great phone
Pixel have the best AI and is free. Everybody quiet and cool about it Samsung does it and is all over the internet like something never seen before.
Samsung doesn't make the best AI features exclusive to their highest price flagship phone like Google does. Google's top AI features are restricted to U.S. only while Samsung's are available wherever Samsung phones are sold.
@@jevonsims900 The only problem is, Users will have to pay for AI features in 2025 for the Samsung Phones. Bummer!

How did you make this transition when showing the specifications?

I can't go back to a fingerprint unlock. FaceID on the iPhone is so much better.
Last good pixel was pixel 5 . New ones only makes sense if you exclusively live in cold areas cause as soon it gets warm , you will have problems, not to mention it has probably the worst modem in any similar priced phone.
Good cameras can only carry you so far , also googles international market team needs a proper wake up when it's priced more than S23 / iphone15 in lots of countries lol

the 8 display is very poor, the display is important and it's rubbish...Pixel 7 pro is cheaper and superior..MENTION THE EFFIN' 8 display, it's dreadful!
Great review, but I just wanted to add on the joy of watching this video on my ultrawide monitor. It was glorious.
Hmm. Was considering on buying the Pixel 8 pro or thr OnePlus 12. I guess ill go for the OnePlus 12 after watching your videos. Thank you for your honest opinion on both videos, sam!
You’re saying their face unlock is better than iPhones?! Objectively…
yes, way better infact(i have both p8 and iphone 11/12/13/14 pro
@@TackyXD_ can you give reasons? Does it work 99.9% of the time without having to place it correctly? Does it work in full darkness? Is it more secure?
I'm not dissing Google I'm actually hoping they get to iPhone quality so I can buy the Pixel 10
Still waiting for the 8a
Just got the phone around a couple of months ago. The phone is great but it is not for me because of the following reasons. :
The above are the
So my suggestion is that if you travel a lot, this phone might not be for you for the above reasons.
Will definitely be looking to replace it in a couple of years if things do not improve.
P.S:I have copy pasted the same comment from a number of other popular reviews in the hope of preventing from making the same mistake I did.
Does the 5g work in India/asia similar to one plus 8?
@@bashingbrainsunlikely
@@bashingbrains dont really know about India. Check the supported networks in their website. It works in Korea though.
Tensor is shit how can google say its a compettitir to galaxy s23 , im so disappointed
