Just remember to leave the spot just like you found it. Germany is another ballgame! Love your your channel Steve, keep up the good work!

      In the United States we have something like that called Dispersed Camping. As long as its public land, national forests, or the such, you can camp for a short time, and than cant camp within so many miles of that spot until some time has passed. This doesnt cover public land like in urban areas, but in general forests or tree cover. There are some other parts of the rules for this as well as what you can do or use and what not, but in general it would be entirely possible to legally camp your way across the country, so long as you make sure you follow all the ordinances of the specific area your in at any given time, at no cost.

    Friendly neighborhood security guard here, I work armed security for a hospital now, but used to do contract security, which occasionally had me planted at construction sites. Unless you're actively on the job site or blocking access to it, you're unlikely to ever hear from us. As far as what authority they have, it's complicated and based on local laws and agency contracts/connections, guards can be anything from just observe and report all the way to bonded and deputized with authorities similar to a police officer. In my career I have only ran off one individual with a tent, he had erected it in front of a driveway to a facility I was posted at, I explained he was blocking the entrance and he quickly moved, that was it. Love the vids, makes me and the wife want to do some camping!

    If you want to avoid people seeing your lights in the woods, use red lights. It makes it a little bit harder for you to see what you're doing, but red is very difficult to see at a distance because red light is harder for the human eye to pick up on at night than white light. Wouldn't be a bad idea to have a dark red/brown tarp as well.
    EDIT: I forgot to mention red light also preserves your natural night vision, so your eyes won't have to re-adjust to darkness when the light is turned off.

    • @sjwarialaw8155
      @sjwarialaw8155 3 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Yeah exactly what I was thinking, when I go on stealth camping adventures I only use red lights, so first it will reduce drastically the odds of someone seeing any light, and second I never have to go check if my space is visible from the outside due to white lights, which by itself decreases drastically the odds of someone seeing me.

      @Andy-413 3 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      @@leeharden4060 Thank you, but I knew that. It's not like he'll see absolute darkness when he turns on a red light just because his eyes can't see red light correctly, that's not how it works. For example, people with complete color blindness (meaning they can't see any colors at all) can still see, they're not completely blind, just as someone with limited color blindness like Steve has can still detect the light, but it just doesn't look red, it'll just look like a different color or grey to him.

    • @sjwarialaw8155
      @sjwarialaw8155 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@Andy-413 And something "funny" is that when you use the red light for awhile without any other light sources, you get momentarily colorblind.

    • @Andy-413
      @Andy-413 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@sjwarialaw8155 Yeah, your eyes adapt to it, but it's not anything to worry about. It happens when your eyes are exposed to any single color for a while, not only red.
      One other benefit I forgot to mention about red light is that it preserves your natural night vision, so your eyes don't have to re-adjust to the darkness after the light is turned off. I'll update my original comment to say that.

    Hey mr hunker down, you got to get a red light it doesn’t stand out nearly as much as a normal light does in the dark. You could have the light on and walk a good 50-75’ away and you won’t even see the red light on unless you know where it is and have to really focus for it. But throw a few tarps and a few trees on top and you won’t have to worry about anything. You can see just fine with the light all night. Keep it up I’m waiting for that one time someone wants to join you in the step 2 but have questions before that.

    Long time bower, fist time commenter.... Love the vids mate!
    I don't know if anyone has said this before. But have you ever used a bivvie bag?
    I was in the army and it's like extreme camping hehe. One if the best thing they taught me was the bivvie bag. The ex military ones are cheap and more stealth/hardwearing. In UK they are around £5 used. Cammed up, goretex, so weather proof and add another 1-2 season to your sleeping bag.
    I've spent plenty of years on top of mountains, burnt building and places I don't want to be seen, safe as sound in my bivvie. It's like a tent you don't have to put up.
    Just make sure it's not a plastic or cheap thing and you will have it years. Also comfy inside tents/buildings as it covers face from heaters and light once you want darkness plus protects the sleeping bag.
    Anyways, love the show mate. I've been to your parts many years back. Wainwright all the way to Edmonton.... Good times.
    You stay safe mate

      Thanks for mentioning the bivvi bag, I remember thinking "there must be something like this but way more compact and portable" when Steve showed off that camping cot/tent thing. I don't spend nearly as much time outside as I wish I did and I may soon invest in some gear so if I pass by or think about some secluded spot I can head out on a whim for a night off or two.

      @AudioAdvisory38 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Your advice is backward.
      Red is the easier color to be seen since it has a long wavelength, is more difficult to scatter, and will be seen by the eye's cones.
      He should use a blue (or cyan if he wants to retain the eye's night vision); because blue has a greater chance of the short wavelength going lost.
      Always the best bet is to use an amount of light (lumens) that cannot be picked up by the cones and rods (one's eye) at all, no matter the color.
      Example: vehicle tail-lamps and radio tower lamps are red because their long wavelength ability to be seen, but will ruin the rods' night vision eventually. Your rods do not detect red; your cones do.
      And everyone who likes your comment need to get educated; like I did. Happy hiding.

    • @Marktec
      @Marktec 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@AudioAdvisory38 why the snarky comment at the end? Your advice was great until that part, now instead of thinking back to wavelength and carrying out a productive conversation, I’m just thinking, fuck this guy. You ruined your own credible argument because of your lack of humility. And just because blue may be better, doesn’t mean red isn’t still a major improvement-still way better than a bright flashlight.
