I especially love how Joe and Nicky's relationship seems specifically designed to be impossible to remove from the film in other countries. Take out their kiss? I guess you could, but they're still just as physically affectionate as any other couple throughout all their other scenes. Remove them entirely? Then good luck making the climax make sense when it's all about rescuing them.
As a Russian I can see ways to cut all of their gay scenes :) (I've seen it in other movies, not in this one, because there wasn't an official translation of this movie)
I love the fact that theres no rhyme or reason to when its their time. Because you can FEEL the panic the character has everytime one of them takes just a liiiiiittle longer to come back after theyre killed
Did you notice they beat up the guys in the van after they tried to keep them apart? The guards are all slumped around when they open the van to move the immortals into the plane
I'm generally not a fan of the action movie genre, but I checked this out because it's the first comic book action movie directed by a woman of color. And I'm all for rewarding the movie-making industry for getting away from the old boys club rut. One thing I realized about the casting is that the group of five represent basically all of human written history, and all continents of the globe. And the immortal who represents modern America is a young black woman. So that's cool. Also, after watching the movie, I checked out some of the background on it. The screenplay was written by the same man who wrote the comic book, and in the original comic, the Boss Immortal's oldest friend was Japanese. But the actress they hired for the movie was Vietnamese. So they gave her a Vietnamese name because "Asian" people are *not* interchangeable. I also loved that the B-plot was neither the usual "romance just starting out (and creating complications for the team)" nor "old married couple who now hate each other, and on the verge of divorce (and creating complications for the team)." My favorite bit, though, was the closing credits with that sociological map board, showing their history, while the song "Baby Outlaw" plays. I thought it was written for the movie, but apparently not.
I've been watching TH-cam reviews for this movie and IT GIVES ME LIFE how many LGBTQ folx are like "I was sure one of these guys was going to die" and then they're all like "NOT ONLY DO THEY NOT DIE BUT THEY GET THIS AMAZING SCENE TOGETHER!" But also it makes me realize how far we have to go with bringing authentic love between gay, trans, lesbian, asexual, and non-binary folks into the mainstream of our media.
Spoiler Alert: I know you don't see her, but I kept thinking about Charlize Theron's girlfriend after they were talking about what happened to her , the terror of being immortal and drowning over and over again for hundreds of years. I can't imagine what that would do to someone's psyche.
That monologue of the dude about his partner literally made me cry. It was beautiful. Also, I too expected the writers to hit the horrible trope of killing off one of the men, and was so happy that they didn't. Did you know Charlize actually seriously injured herself in the stunts? I write action sci fi, and I really loved the combat choreography, particularly the way Any's combat style was a wondrous mash up of guns, ax and various forms of hand to hand. There was very little flashy swirly crap that you get in a lot of combat sequences with bladed weapons, her character just went in and efficiently killed her targets. Unrealistic combat sequences for hand to hand is one of my pet hates in movies.
I love that the cast is diverse even among the white actors. Luca Marinelli (Nicky) is Italian, Matthias Schoenaerts (Booker) is Belgian and Charlize (Andy) is South African (I always thought she was american). Marwan Kenzari (Joe) is Tunisian-Dutch. According to Gina, the director, the cast spoke a lot in a mixture of English and their first languages and were encouraged to keep doing it by Gina. AND they got to keep their accents! As a fellow European, LOVE THAT!
It's interesting because on first watch, I thought Nicky was going to die for sure. He was kind and helpful to Nile and the others as well as the moment where he mentioned Malta (a happy place they should go back to) to Joe, I was certain he was going to die and that would be the main motive for the team to kill these people and then he gets shot and I thought,,,, oh this is the end for him, I'm really sad to see him go but then he came back and out loud, I shrieked
me, too. I saw him getting shot and Joe's angst and sadness (he could not even touch Nicky and had to look away) - and I was like "oh no, please no, not the KillYourGays trope, please no!" and suddenly Nicky woke up and I almost cried because I was so happy :') I love them so much
I have a particular love for multilingual stories done well (grew up bilingual) so seeing (found) family interact in multiple languages flawlessly always makes my heart happy because it feels so familiar, and it was another aspect that exemplified what you discussed, namely, the concept might not be groundbreaking in and of itself, but the way it was executed (diverse cast) and how well it was, with the production value it had, kind of is!
I love this movie so much, I’ve watched it so many times now. The diversity and the lack of toxic masculinity and the strong women are all just beautiful!
I really want to read the comic in which the movie is based. I've read is a really great adaptation of the source material. And yes, when Joe said: "You are a child..." I was thrilled.
If you do, I'd also highly recommend Lazarus, also written by Greg Rucka, similarish kind of idea, immortal spec ops types, though Lazarus has a more scifi reason for the immortality
I watched this movie on my own, then watched it with my partner. I love it. I think I've rewatched that scene with Nicky and Joe in the truck about 50 times by now. There is a second comic book, so there is definitely a chance for a sequel, and the cast have all indicated they'd do another one after a break. Since the person who wrote the comic also wrote the screenplay, I think we'd be in safe hands with it, too. There's always the concern that the sequel will f*ck up a good thing (which has proven several times, at least in my experience) but when you have the author of the comic doing the adaptation and a really good cast and crew, it does bode well.
@@BreakRoomofGeeks That is the obvious question. I have no idea. You'd probably be better qualified to answer it than I. I have no frame of reference for judging what makes a good or a bad comic. Watched Old Guard after seeing you review. I really enjoyed it and found the characters interesting. Enjoyed Joe and Nicky's relationship. Agree with you that the casting is great. Love the evil black ops agent from Serenity here as a former CIA. He is perfect in the role and did a great job. I do hope that they do a sequel.

But I just watched it (and came back to watch the "spoiler" section of your review) and I enjoyed it. And yes, the spoilery thing you mentioned was wonderful, especially the van scene. What can I say about them that hasn't been said? Probably nothing, but I will say that I've seen a lot of people talk about the truck scene and how the soldiers (??) were being homophobic and honestly? It didn't come off that way at all to me. I saw it more as that one guy making fun of Joe's vulnerability and mocking his worry for Nicky, an interaction that could've happened with a straight couple too; more of a statement on toxic masculinity than anything else, really.
Not gonna lie. im very drunk right now. But i still love your videos. Louisa (My mate who was building the bar that i mentioned in a live stream ages ago) says hi.
I quite enjoyed this film, nothing overly unique, but what it did it did well. But that declaration of love scene...oh my was that amazing! Greg Rucka, who wrote the screenplay and the comic upon which it's based, also wrote my favourite comic book (which honestly isn't saying much I don't read comics usually), Lazarus, which is somewhat similar to The Old Guard, concerning immortal spec ops types, except in Lazarus' case the immortality is artificially produced (in several differing ways) by "Houses", that were once corporations, to create a Lazarus, a singular uniquely skilled soldier to protect the House and lead their forces. The main character is also a woman, like The Old Guard. I'd love to see an adaptation of that!
3:45 I actually have some theories. I think there may be a fixed number of immortals. I don't think it's a coincidence that Nyle finds out she's immortal shortly before Andy starts to lose her immortality. I'm not clear on the mechanics and I could be wrong, but I wouldn't be surprised if Lykon died shortly after Nicky and/or Joe (wouldn't it be cool if they were tied somehow?) resurrected for the first time. I might be wrong about that, the timeline might not add up. I just think the franchise might explore the mechanics of immortality further in future installments. They might even address what would happen if you tried to behead, dismember or vaporize immortals. Someone has got to have tried at this point, and I can't really think of a good resolution to that question. If it's possible to kill them that way, the plot doesn't make sense anymore. But if it doesn't kill them, how do they survive? Do they grow new limbs? But doesn't that result in at least two clones? This franchise could get real silly, real fast if it dwells on this.
I liked the movie, it was pretty ok , The action for me at times was a let down , To many close ups , to much choppy editing and cuts during the fights , They did try the John Wick action but without the know how of shooting those kind of action scenes . Some of the action scenes flowed ok , But I found the editing to make them feel meh. I kind of found the speech in the back of the Van so cheesy and sappy , if they where straight my eyes still would have rolled like come on who wrote that Nichole's Sparks , Stephenie Meyer, This movie did have some really bad dialog throughout and a very bland boring bad guy , The main Characters where cool , It was pretty well acted cool primes. But even though I liked it i found it pretty just ok , If it had not been a netflix movie i think my feelings would be even harsher

Cool review, I really like hearing what people think about art. 💚🖤💜💙💛❤!!
I watched it for Matthias Schoenaerts.. So, Mr Rucka, my sad, sexy immortal Frenchman better not end up permanently dead in TOG 2 😭
Thos movie was AWESOME.
I loved the first act, but the deeply formulaic predictability of the rest of the film spoiled my enjoyment of it
so, four Capt Jack Harkness'? ok, I'm in.
I love me an action movie that speaks to the gays on multiple levels, amazing!
Ehhh it was ok. But has Nate watched Dark? OMG
Just a heads up that he goes by Nathaniel, not Nate.
Oh god! Dark is my favourite show of all time!
