Thank you Jesus, your love is everlasting to everlasting.
I love the tempo of this rendition of the song. Many times I've heard it sung in churches and because of the pace and tone the song becomes depressing and seems to focus on death. To me this version celebrates the life of Christ.
My favorite verse I learned differently. It went: "I danced on the Friday when the sky turned black. It's hard to dance with the Devil on your back. They murdered me and they thought I'd gone. But I am The Dance and I still go on." To me this is a bit more "powerful" than the verse here, which seems to be standard.
In my school that verse went 'I danced on a Friday when the sky turned black. It's hard to dance with the devil on your back. They berried my body and they thought I'd gone. But I am the dance and I still go on.

Written by an Englishman when in Australia, became a hymn and now an Irish song Irish song. Great tune, great lyrics. I learned it in the village choir, played it at my wedding and sang it to all my kids.
I absolutely LOVE this version! Like most people in the UK, I remember singing this enthusiastically at primary school. I was just walking my dogs (Fri 7th June), and the sky did indeed turn black. I rushed home before the downpour and had this song on loop in my head, but couldn't remember all the verses. Thanks to this video, I've just sung it (very enthusiastically 😆) once again. ❤

They missed the "They whipped and they stripped and they hung me on high And left me there on a cross to die" Either that or my primary school decided to add some weird lyrics to it
Perhaps they thought it wasn't appropriate for 5-11 year old kids to be singing those lyrics and added something nicer in despite everyone knowing that Jesus was crucified
I only recall having been introduced to this song in grade 6, graduation year! We were all like “there’s an upbeat religious song?! Okay!” The only song that got a cheer when it started during our liturgies, haha.
It's so interesting to watch how God works in people's lives. I had a lot of trauma in my youth and remember singing the chorus of this song quite frequently, though I didn't know the verses or tied it to Christianity. It wasn't until I was in my mid-40s that I learned the full meaning of the song. To think that God had planted it as a seed to help me through such a very difficult life is dumbfounding. God is so good to me!
Just heard this for the first time a couple of nights ago at Lisner Auditorium in DC. The cast came down off the stage and invited us to dance all around the auditorium, holding hands and singing the chorus. What a profoundly spiritual experience!
We have the DVD of Michael Flatley's Lord of the Dance. My son used to watch it as a little boy and dance around the living room to it. He used to play it nearly every day after school or at weekends. He was always playing it. I must find it and remind him. Perhaps at Christmas time.
I woke singing this when I read Luke 7:31 - 35, they try their tricks to make God do what they want but HE will never lower Himself to their demands! Vs. 32 Just like so many (even in churches) try to make Jesus perform for them, He never will! [I AM THE LORD of the dance said HE. ] HE alone is in total control, trust HIM! Give your heart and all your desires to HIM, He will lead you to amazing places. HIS plan is so much better than yours! Blessings!
I believe I learned this song back in the early 90s. I spent two years in a Christian private school where either a music teacher or one of my Christian School Masters led a lesson on this song. Never heard it again after that time. I'm 42 years old now and even now, from time to time the lyrics of this dance through my mind. No pun intended. Glad I was able to find it again.🥰

"Simple Gifts" is a Shaker song written and composed in 1848 by Elder Joseph Brackett. Many people think that the tune of "Simple Gifts" is a traditional Celtic one. The song was largely unknown until Aaron Coplandused its melody in Appalachian Spring in 1948. "Lord of the Dance" is a hymn, using this melody, with words written by English songwriter Sydney Carter in 1963. The Carter lyrics were adapted, in ignorance of the actual origins, without authorization or acknowledgments by Ronan Hardiman for Michael Flatley's dance musical Lord of the Dance, which opened in 1996. The melody is used at various points throughout the show, including the piece titled "Lord of the Dance." Other adaptations have occurred in the widespread belief that they are traditional, and in the public domain. It was Flatley that made it sound Irish. TH-cam has many versions of "Simple Gifts". Give them a listen and you will see that this is that song. The original lyrics from 1848 are wonderful.
"Many people think" ... many people think that the world flat (if you look around TH-cam you'll find them). These are weasel words that convey an opinion but no evidence or facts. The modern fashion of "everything celtic" runs full steam ahead regardless of the real history and culture of Britain and Ireland. So, no, it's not a "celtic" tune, even if people could find evidence that it came from Ireland that still would not make it "celtic".
Legend says that every primary school through out the land had a slightly different version, and to this day everyone remains convinced that theirs is the best one.

This is my favorite song because it reminds me of my sister she can nail this dance I haven't seen them for 4 months
