It is quite ironic ahha. it's hard to have conversations about struggles, like loneliness, because it's something that a lot of us have never done. No one talks about their fear even though it is something everyone experiences. It would make me feel seen and them as well and lead to a deeper sense of connection. Our culture kind of demonizes fear and promotes individualism and success, and so it makes sense that many today struggle to talk about their fear, loneliness, struggles and trauma, for fear of ostracism. ironic we all fear ostracism but no one talks about it and thus we are all ostracized from eachother
This makes so much sense. I love the way this man communicates as well. Clearly, calmly and humbly-yet full of wisdom. It’s easy for some, myself included, to avoid and isolate, but I have learned that I do better when I push past and engage. Finding community is vital. ❤ Thank you for sharing this. I need to reach out more to family and neighbors that are lonely.
I love all the conversations here. So many serious and important talks. Amazing job, and I liked a lot of this new editing. With an intro, flashback, etc.
I just found this podcast a few weeks ago. It's so awesome! Thank you, Rainn, for discussing interesting topics such as these. It's my favorite to listen to now
When he describes his fathers village,I cannot even imagine how shocking and alienating and confusing it must have been to come to a place like America,I mean the culture shock must be off the charts. I often think about this for people who come from such communal cultures where there is time for relational activity,in fact its centred and still they manage to get everything done they need to but for anyone who has spent any time in such a culture then coming back to the alienating individualism of most western culture is such a shock to the system.NO wonder so many of us are sick and unhappy and constantly chasing material things to try and fill us up,make us happy, make us feel like we matter and are of value.
Thank you for sharing this deeply thoughtful reflection. 🙏 You’ve captured something so profound about the contrast between communal and individualistic cultures. It’s true-there’s an immense sense of belonging and purpose in communities where relationships are at the heart of daily life. That grounding, that shared humanity, is something many of us long for but don’t even realize we’re missing.
When the SG was talking about health warnings with social media, it brought to mind something that I learned about hypnosis as a state of mind we regularly go into. Hypnosis is simply a relaxed and focused state of mind. However, it is also a state of mind where the subconscious mind is most open to influence belief systems we have. Driving puts us into this state, watching TV, or using a cell phone/computer. We also enter into this state when we meditate, pray, make art in any form. This is why advertisements are always paired with points in our daily lives that we are most likely going to be in this state. This also highlights the SG's comments about mental health and that online profiles and interactions only show a small piece or rather perspective of reality. With being in the hypnotic state this makes it much easier for people to develop misperceptions by making unfair comparisons. Considering that children's minds have yet to fully develop the critical factor, this makes them even more susceptible to influence. We are seeing this manifest with the surge of mental illness. This is why the tools that Rainn has highlighted many times are important. Meditation, mindfulness practices, gratitude, really connecting with each other in person and connecting with the natural world. All of these can be used to remain grounded. Going within and really doing the emotional work and finding acceptance and forgiveness is how we can begin to heal. Just for reference sake, I'm a certified master hypnotist and emotional wisdom teacher.
Great Discussion! We don't have to wait for a crisis to come together. Kindness and Compassion is gone these days! Social media, Texting is killing us. We need human connection and if we don't have a support group in REAL life, it can be very lonely.
I'm listening to this episode as I type this. I couldn't help but think about my Christian upbringing. It's interesting to me that Christians are all about wanting to help end the loneliness epidemic but fail to understand that's it's in part responsible for people like me who leave the church. I'm now a 30-year-old man, ex-vangelical agnostic (a non-resistant non-believer), a college student getting my major in religious studies, wrestling with this very epidemic. I'm also on the spectrum of Autism and from my experience, the Christian community has sought to control my spiritual journey with regards to how I'm wired as a person. One of the ways I fight this epidemic is meeting which a community of Bahai's in my neck of the woods. While I'm still skeptical of the religion in certain aspects, there's other aspects that on a simple level, I can be down with putting into practice. Rainn, your book and podcast is something I hope everyone can get there hands on because humanity needs to go through another evolution, one where we can live in a utopian society as opposed to a dystopian one. I'd love to pick your brain on these matters if by some miracle, you see this. I saw that you were a guest on the within reason podcast with Alex O'Connor. Both you and him have played a huge part in how I navigate life on an intellectual level. Thanks again for you wanting to discuss topics that desperately need to be talked about so that healing can follow.
Jake!! Thank you so much for opening up and sharing your journey so honestly. 🙏 It’s incredibly moving to hear how deeply you’ve wrestled with these questions about faith, community, and belonging-and how you’re navigating them with such thoughtfulness and courage. Honestly, it's so real that sometimes the very communities meant to nurture connection and healing can sometimes fail to meet us where we are, especially when it comes to honoring unique ways of being and thinking. It makes us so happy that you’ve found a sense of connection with the Bahá’í community in your area. Where abouts are you? Thank you for your kind words about Soul Boom and Rainn’s work-it means the world to hear how it’s been a part of your intellectual and spiritual journey. Much love! 💙
@SoulBoom I'm near Portland, Oregon. Also, thanks for replying back. It means a lot, and I hope I can one day meet Rainn and talk about these kinds of topics with him someday.

49:32 D&D!! Ive been calling this the catch-all societal solution since I found it 10 years ago. I love this shout out
Isn’t it a profound irony that overwhelming feelings of loneliness are something nearly everyone has experienced in life?

Thank you for sharing Carol. Sending you so much love 💙
Really enjoyed this episode! It was so informative and insightful.

Its not being alone, its being alone with someone you arent happy with. Alone is good for a man, if you can be happy alone you love yourself.

You can do it, you are not alone in your struggles. I for one can relate
Sending love your way 💙
