ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤੀ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ:
18ਵੀਂ ਸਦੀ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ, ਮੁਕਤਸਰ ਦੇ ਆਲੇ-ਦੁਆਲੇ ਦਾ ਇਲਾਕਾ ਖਿਦਰਾਣਾ ਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਅਰਧ-ਸੁੱਕਾ ਖੇਤਰ ਸੀ। ਇਸਦੇ ਮੁਢਲੇ ਵਸਨੀਕਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਪਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਸਤਲੁਜ ਦਰਿਆ ਦੇ ਬਦਲਦੇ ਰਸਤੇ ਨੇ ਸੰਭਾਵਤ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਪੁਰਾਤੱਤਵ ਅਵਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਦੱਬ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਹਨ।
ਮੁਕਤਸਰ ਦੀ ਲੜਾਈ (1705):
1704 ਵਿੱਚ, ਅਨੰਦਪੁਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ, ਜੋ ਕਿ ਸਿੱਖ ਹੈੱਡਕੁਆਰਟਰ ਸੀ, ਨੂੰ ਮੁਗਲਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਪਹਾੜੀ ਰਾਜਿਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਾਂਝੀਆਂ ਫੌਜਾਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਲੰਬੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਤੱਕ ਘੇਰਾਬੰਦੀ ਦਾ ਸਾਹਮਣਾ ਕਰਨਾ ਪਿਆ। ਘਟਦੇ ਸਰੋਤਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਅੰਦਰੂਨੀ ਅਸਹਿਮਤੀ ਦਾ ਸਾਹਮਣਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋਏ, ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਘੇਰਾਬੰਦੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਣ ਲਈ ਇੱਕ ਰਣਨੀਤੀ ਤਿਆਰ ਕੀਤੀ। ਚਾਲੀ ਸਿੱਖ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਚਾਲੀ ਮੁਕਤੇ (ਚਾਲੀ ਮੁਕਤੇ) ਵਜੋਂ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਨੇ ਦੁਸ਼ਮਣ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਤੋਂ ਦੂਰ ਖਿੱਚਣ ਲਈ ਵਲੰਟੀਅਰ ਵਜੋਂ ਕੰਮ ਕੀਤਾ। ਉਹ ਖਿਦਰਾਣੇ ਦੀ ਇੱਕ ਛੋਟੀ ਜਿਹੀ ਝੀਲ ਕੋਲ ਆਪਣੀ ਸ਼ਹਾਦਤ ਤੱਕ ਬਹਾਦਰੀ ਨਾਲ ਲੜਦੇ ਰਹੇ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਗਏ ਅਤੇ ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਚਾਲੀ ਮੁਕਤੇ ਦੀ ਕੁਰਬਾਨੀ ਦੇ ਸਨਮਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੜਾਈ ਦੇ ਸਥਾਨ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਮੁਕਤਸਰ ਰੱਖ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਭਾਵ "ਮੁਕਤੀ ਦਾ ਪੂਲ",।
ਲੜਾਈ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਦੀ ਮਹੱਤਤਾ:
ਮੁਕਤਸਰ ਦੀ ਲੜਾਈ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਲਈ ਬਹੁਤ ਮਹੱਤਵ ਰੱਖਦੀ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਹਿੰਮਤ, ਵਫ਼ਾਦਾਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਅਟੁੱਟ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਦਰਾਂ-ਕੀਮਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਿਸਾਲ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਲੜਾਈ ਵਾਲੀ ਜਗ੍ਹਾ ਇੱਕ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਸਥਾਨ ਬਣ ਗਈ, ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ਹੀਦਾਂ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ। ਹਰ ਸਾਲ ਮੁਕਤਸਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਚਾਲੀ ਮੁਕਤੇ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਰਧਾਂਜਲੀ ਭੇਟ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਮੇਲਾ ਮਾਘੀ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਵੱਡਾ ਮੇਲਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ।

Early History:
Before the 18th century, the area around Muktsar was a semi-arid region called Khidrana. Not much is known about its early inhabitants, as the shifting course of the Sutlej River has likely buried any archaeological remains.
The Battle of Muktsar (1705):
In 1704, the city of Anandpur Sahib, then Sikh headquarters, faced a prolonged siege by the combined forces of the Mughals and hill chiefs. Facing dwindling resources and internal dissent, Guru Gobind Singh Ji devised a strategy to escape the siege. Forty Sikhs, known as the Chali Mukte (Forty Liberated Ones), volunteered to act as decoys, drawing the enemy away from the city. Guru Gobind Singh Ji reached safety and later renamed the site of the battle as Muktsar, meaning "the pool of liberation," in honor of the Chali Mukte's sacrifice.

The Battle of Muktsar holds immense significance for Sikhs. It exemplifies the values of courage, loyalty, and unwavering faith. The site of the battle became a holy place, and a Gurdwara was built to commemorate the martyrs. Every year, a large fair called Mela Maghi is held in Muktsar to pay homage to the Chali Mukte.
