- Beat 'em ups were a dime a dozen back in the 80's and 90's, but not many developers made them better than Konami. This classic has been lost to the sands of time, but lives on forever in retro game collections. Based on Tim Burton's 1992 film, Batman Returns, this game is a perfect example of a licensed game done right. With amazing graphics, smooth and fun gameplay, and an epic soundtrack, this is one of the best scrolling beat 'em ups of the 1990's.

Love this game. Back when I was kid in 90s, once I played this game and it blew me away. I couldn't believe it was not on the arcade machine.
I know, right?! Such a great looking game for a 16-bit console
An all-time favorite of mine.
Nice! It’s such a classic
This was my most replayed SNES game back in the day. Just wish it had been longer.
Yea it def is a shorter game. Which has its pros since it makes for a fun play through once you master the game
I bought this game for 15 dollars 💵 and was completely shocked to find it at this pricing! Must have game on the SNES hands down!
100% agree! This is a no-brainer pick-up for a SNES collection. Like I said in the video, I’m shocked it doesn’t get enough recognition in the beat ‘em up genre
Great video. I absolutely loved this game! As you said, it's just below Turtles in Time on the SNES. I used to enter the code for the sound test, so I could listen to the small sound bytes of music.
Thanks, bro! Yea it’s almost there. Maybe if it was 2 players it would’ve bumped it up a notch, but, Robin wasn’t in the movie. Oh well lol. Yea the sound effects/music is so good on this
Max- “And Bruce Wayne… why are you dressed up as Batman?!”
Selina- “Because HE IS Batman, you moron!!”
Marlon Wayans' unused depiction of Robin planned for the Batman Returns movie,
should've been a cooperative Player-2 option in this game.
Man, can you imagine that?? That would’ve been dope if they included that in this game. Im pretty sure the Batman Forever Arcade beat ‘em up was 2 players. Would’ve been cool to have that for this game
Great review of a fantastic underrated game. I have it my own collection as well really unique BATmosphere ripped straight from the movie.
Thanks, bro! Haha nice. Yea it’s a game that I will always have in my collection. A true must-own
I just played this game last week. Konami went above and beyond with this game 😊
They sure did!
Batman Returns is a banger! I really need to beat it. I usually bust it out in December for some holiday themed a** kicking. Then I get bored of it and go back to playing chess on my phone lol
Hell yea, bro! 🤘🏻
I like to pop it in from time to time during the holidays too. Just an hour or two always scratches the itch.
Haha nothing beats a solid game of chess on the phone lol
I actually beat that game on my emulator device. It’s an awesome game!
Nice! It sure is
Yes it's awesome. Big fan here.
If it had 2-player co-op, it would have been perfect!
Truth! Yea a lot of people have said that about how better it would be if it was co-op. A missed opportunity, for sure
Love this game as a kid. The only thing it lacked was a save button
Yea that would’ve been cool. But at the same time, beat ‘em ups back in the day didn’t have that feature. The classic practice and grind of retro games. It made beating the game that much more special. I feel save states on games like this kinda ruin the game because there’s no sense of accomplishment if you beat the game starting at level 3 or 4. Idk, just my opinion. Like the TMNT arcade game on the Cowabunga collection… you’re able to add 100 lives to your play through. It kinda ruins the magic of getting good at the game. And Batman returns wasn’t that difficult where it was impossible to beat.
@@VicariouslyRetro True I beat it as a kid and I want very good. Your right about the graphics they really show what the SNES is capable of
@@eljaguar4789 for sure! It’s def one of the more approachable beat ‘em up games of the 16-bit era. Thanks for watching!
I think if this game had been 2 players it would have been as popular as Turtles in Time.
I remember being surprised that a licensed superhero game was actually really fun, most of them from back then were ass.
I 100% agree. I mean, I get why it was a single player game because Robin wasn’t in Batman Returns, but still, like you said, it would’ve made it way more popular.
And yea, this was such a nice surprise. You ever play the Genesis version? It’s way worse lol
Like others have mentioned, I think the lack of a 2 player mode is the biggest reason it gets a bit overlooked. But slamming clowns through windows was always fun!
100% dude. And yes, throwing them into wall, glass, poles, park benches… such a great part of the game lol
My MOST rented snes game
I don’t blame you! It’s so good
youtube hasn't been recommending your stuff to me. thought you left us😢. I'll have to load up this game at some time soon.
Oh really? That’s weird. Hmm, wonder why. Dude def check it out, it’s great. Only downside is that it’s single player
Speakin of batman animated series . I got batman animated series dvd boxed. When i watched this whole series it was the first time since tha 90 s i had seen batman animated series
I have the DVD’s too lol. It was my favorite cartoon as a kid. Its funny cause the TMNT cartoon was always my fav when I was really young, but rewatching TMNT, it’s obvious the show hasn’t aged too well. Batman Animated series has aged like a fine wine. Very mature tones, great story lines… shame we didn’t get another season
@@VicariouslyRetro ive got Tmnt complete series on dvd at walmart ages ago. For less than 20 bucks. .tmnt u can tell its age. But batman animates series 90 s show the animation doesnt look old it looks more modern
@@danielsantana540 for less than $20?? That’s awesome lol. And yea, the animation on TMNT is slow. Very 80’s with a slow frame rate. Batman is very smooth
@@VicariouslyRetro yes indeed ive been a lifetime batmsn fanatic. I own a batman encyclopedia published september 2008. My favorite batman the amimated series episodes are the last laugh 9 22 1992. And if u are so smart why arent you rich 11 18 1992. 1992 we were treated to a great batman returns film as well as batman the animated series episode the cat and the claw 9 5 1992 first epidode.. what did u think of Nes batman returns. I think its a cool game but brutally difficult
God damn lol, you def love it more than me. Some of my favs are Robin's Reckoning, Beware the Grey Ghost, Almost got ‘em, Perchance to Dream, anything with Mr. Freeze… Mark Hamill as Joker… god damn, there’s just so many to list. I will say I think over the edge might be my fav… when scarecrow kills Barbara and Jim Gordon finds out Bruce is Batman. Such a wild episode.
I’ve actually never played Batman returns on the NES. Just the genesis and SNES. I’ll check out the NES version though
Road head on a roller coaster. Hahahahahahah
Hahaha
My fav was that simpsons game at the arcade i never could find a emulator for it
Loved that game too. Blows my mind that a port was never made for the PS1 or Saturn. That and the X-men arcade game
@@VicariouslyRetro funny thing I just looked it up just now and found it but it's only for the phone lol
@@imperialstats haha of all platforms too. So random. Wish they would release it on the switch
@@VicariouslyRetro it's on some site called miniplay
Interesting. Never even heard of that
Late reply .but good vid overall
Thanks, brother! 🤘🏻
@@VicariouslyRetro yup
i prefer power rangers on the snes
Never played the SNES Power Rangers games. I did watch SNES Drunk’s video on those games and they seemed “ok but very generic”. Seems like the beat ‘em up based on the game is the better of the two
Um, pretty sure this is not forgotten or some hidden gem? It's commonly considered one of the best beat em ups on SNES, no?
Can't wait for that next hidden gem on the SNES called Zelda 3?
You should do more voicework, somewhere .You have a smokers radio voice.
Hahaha your comments are always great. But for me, I rarely hear people talk about this game when discussing beat ‘em ups. Just pointing out that it needs more love and recognition.
And thanks! 🤘🏻😬🚬
@@VicariouslyRetro Sorry, bro. Wasn't trying to be mean or anything. You really do have a deep ass voice for radio, no lie.
@@gaylordfocker7990 nah no worries, all good! I appreciate the feedback. But honestly, I just never hear that many people talk about it. I also don’t follow too many retro video game channels so maybe I’m just out of the loop. Some of the bigger retro channels that I follow have kinda become “video game news channels” like RGT85.
And thanks about the voice. My buddies growing up always told me that I needed to be on the radio. I guess this is the next best thing lol
@@VicariouslyRetro rgt sucks. Channels like that ruin the platform and literally have no creative. Surprised that garbage is still influential?
Forgot to respond. Yea man, I followed his channel a long time ago cause his stuff was all about retro stuff. Now his channel has become a straight up clickbait news channel. It’s annoying. Guy does 2 videos a day. Once in a blue moon he’ll make a good video. But these switch 2 rumor videos are so stupid
