I think the 650b with fat tires is much better than the 700c with thin tires on gravel.
However the gravel is the rigid hardtail with dropbar sets. I'm joking.

Thank you for the video. It actually looks good and I bet it will be much more comfortable.

If you have to muck around that much is it not just easier and better to use the mountain bike? Just asking is all

For me it's about the weight and trail/road conditions. If there is a lot of climbing and it's mostly on gravel I'd prefer this set up to save on weight - provided the rear wheel cleared the chainstay. Again this would only be practical to jump through all these hoops if it was a multi-day tour . Ideally one would have a separate wheel/tire combo to switch out

I agree. Once I put slicks on my Gravel bike they stayed on there. Unless it's light gravel and/or long rides, I'd rather ride my mountain bike off road.

@@socaljoe I'm going to be honest. It seems like a huge backward step to use what is essentially a road bike for off road use. If it's a weight issue then look for a cross country mountain bike as even the full suspension ones come in at around 10 or 11 kg

@@LeaBrattle-parker-pp5sf Thank you for watching and your commenting! I wouldn't call the dropper bike in this video "essentially a road bike". While yes you can certainly use it on the road as I do but it's also built to go on rougher roads with more volmunous tires and carry gear if desired. If I implied I take this on ST than that was not the intention as it would be underbiked.
I use the drop bar bike as both an unloaded gravel bike, mostly climbing local fire roads and also when I know the paved roads I choose to ride are a bit rougher. I also load it up to go on loaded tours or bikepacking adventures. The MTB can do the same but unless it's ST it's overkill. The MTB as shown weighs just over 34lbs (15.4kg) - with tools, pedals, spare tube while the drop bar bike is 27.5lbs(12.5kg) as shown (granted it does have carbon wheels and the MTB wheels would probably push it to at least 29lbs /13.2kg?) While a 11 or 12KG CC bike would be nice for these trips most of the MTB riding around here is riding up a mountain then bombing down it so it's best suited for a FS MTB - IMHO. I also can't afford what seems would be a very expensive bike that would only see use on bikepacking trips in my situation. Although a suspension fork would be nice on wash boards on some of these bikepacking adventures!

Have you tried a 29x2.2 by chance or have you tried maxing out what it will accept for a 29r? I would love to build up an S1 frame if it will take a 29x2.2

@@wheelzandgillz I think the maximum is listed on the website/catalog, I know that’s where I found out that the 650b is 2.25”. The 29er is probably 47 or 50mm

@socaljoe yea I'm just wondering if the max listed still has room for more or if that is in fact the absolute max, I think my 2020 is rated for 700x42 max but I can easily fit a 48 no problem, thanks for youre reply!

Yes if you have the right gravel bike, funnily enough I make one.
