    I love when the cops tell you to "take advantage" of it being legal to search your kids room. Really makes you understand how they see the law.

    This popped up on Reddit and someone in the comments said they always kept their stash in their parents closet since they would never search there. Just like you said kids get smart. Also I love to imagine a kid taking some control back and filling their room with elaborate fake containers with nothing in them just to waste their parents time.

    I started experimenting with drugs when I was way too young. My parents took the punitive cop approach and it did nothing but make me angry and push me away. It also did not save me from addiction as an adult.

    • @Kelgore

      yeah I don’t understand how they think this would work?

    • @nectarshrub
      @nectarshrub 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Haha. I did the same thing but my parents took a “hands off” approach and never confronted me about it, they even helped me buy alcohol sometimes. And that also did not save me from addiction as an adult. Seems that the causes of addiction are more complex than just parental punitive/enabling attitudes towards substances. It is so much deeper than that. If you didn’t grow up and develop into a person who enjoys their life? And if you don’t feel content in your own mind? You’re vulnerable to addiction, and parents can’t control anything at that point because its too late.

    "Best way to prevent adult addiction is to intervene early when they're young" - Yeah, mommy and daddy who don't trust You and have no boundaries are a great way to raise a kid who is emotionally stable and won't try to cope by using drugs. As someone who has had their stuff searched by a bf (who also threw some stuff out he didn't like), it leaves a scar. You stop feeling human. Just don't ever do this to Your kids, it will f them up.

    If it gets to this point you've already failed as a parent. If you invest your time and attention into the relationship with your child, they will be open with you voluntarily. Respect is a two way street. If your child is lying and making poor choices, rearrange their life to direct them to a better situation. Turning out your child's room for contraband like your house is a federal prison only teaches your child to behave like an inmate.

    As a current resident of Orange County, this video is extremely on-brand. Although I couldn’t tell if the man-child was wearing DC skate shoes, which would have been bonus authenticity points. But for reals, I think there’s some nuance in this whole issue. If a parent is really concerned about their child, wouldn’t searching their room seem like a normal reaction? On the other hand, it really is a good way to make your child mistrust and resent you as a parent to be consistently violating their space. Argg, alt-middle perspectives are so frustrating.

    My mom was trained like this, she accused me of using cocaine when I was in the 3rd grade. After that all I wanted to do is try cocaine. As a teenager, I also learned to hide my drugs in the city divider wall off the property behind my house so that my parents wouldnt find them. I learned that opening up about my emotional problems would result in trouble. I eventually became a heroin addict as an adult and my room was searched constantly as a kid. It took me until I was 33 to get clean and get honest about my mental health problems and move on with my life.
