Gates father was a partner and his mother was a socialite who had the hook up. His mother had the ear of a top IBM executive and was able to recommend Microsoft to them. Who in the hood got that type of hook up or network connection? Also, if you got a garage you’re in the petite bourgeoisie.

    • @LustStarrr
      @LustStarrr 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Don't forget Gates also capitalised on a bunch of previously freeware software, & copyrighted it in the process, ruining loads of independent developers' lives, & making tech waaaay more expensive for everyone in the process...
See Thought Slime, Another Slice, & Wisecrack's Bill Gates videos for further Gates-related fuckery.
Also, if you've got a garage big enough to park your car & run your business, or sufficient off-street parking to park your car instead while using your garage for your business, you may be full bourgeoisie, never mind the petite.

    • @jesavius
      @jesavius 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@LustStarrr Don't get me started on the freeware stuff! Though I still let out a laugh when I see Git and Bash on a Windows box... These greedy punks are still capitalizing on freeware. Mainly Open Software like Python. Agree that you're no longer petite if your garage can fit all of that. Have to check out Though Slime's videos on Gates!

Even most middle to upper middle class kids dont have that hook up. I was raised by my (pretty well off, low millionaires basically) grandparents who were both retired by the time I was in high school. Their fields were not in any way related to mine. How was I supposed to use them for contacts?

Hey Girlie, if you want to start a business in your garage, and bee your own boss, or Queen maybe, you should sell triangle honey! It’s not a pyramid scheme, it’s a triangle business that’s sweet for you, and your community!
Lots of Queens make 6 figure numbers in their first year! Not to mention all the drone bees you meet ;)

Even the myth as told is kind of insane.
Myth: "They spent months and months, nights and weekends, sometimes quitting successful jobs and worked their way up (in a garage)! You can too!"
Me: "What if I dont have the time and spoons to just spend all my free time on an unpaid side project due to any number of issues that affect humans?"
Myth: "Oh, just die then. You just dont have the right mindset."

Yup! And if you *do* take that risk and trade stability for a chance at upward mobility, and you fail, then suddenly the garage grindset yes-men change their tune - "Well, you must've done it wrong! Sorry, can't help; you'll have to pull yourself up by the bootstraps!"

True story, I work for a company that literally began in a small garage that would later become an industry leader while remaining a family oriented privately owned company. For various legitimate reasons (mainly a large number of employees reaching retirement age) it was absolutely necessary to sell the company. It was bought by a large publicly traded company and took a turn for the worse almost immediately. It was a good run though, now people are jumping ship as soon as they can.

Steve Jobs also extorted his father into sending him to a specific college: a college he later dropped out of. His dad was working class, and Steve said that if he didn't get to go to a specific college, he wouldn't go at all. Steve credited his experiences in college with how Apple turned out, but he started on the back of his dad.

Probably off topic, but I am fascinated by Steve Jobs' history - he was put up for adoption at birth, and his adoptive dad was a machinist (his college-student parents wanted him to be raised by educated people, but he was placed in a more blue-collar home). You know he picked up some of his design aptitude interest from there. His birthfather was the son of a self-made Syrian millionaire, and the sister that his birthmother kept (after marrying Jobs' father) turned out to be a successful novelist who never knew her mother had borne and relinquished an older brother, and that he was famous.
We are all such a stew or our genes, our upbringing, and our life experiences.
He's a rarity, though, in that most of these "came from a garage" people had beaucoup family dollars behind them.

To assume that Amazon "created jobs" is to assume that the people who work for Amazon would be unemployed without it. They wouldn't. Some of them might have started small businesses. Some of them might have had better jobs.

I’m very into the idea of a patreon! Due to what I recognize is sheer luck and privilege, I can comfortably afford to chip in.
As far as ideas: early releases probably wouldn’t mean extra work for you, and non-patrons wouldn’t miss anything. I personally don’t usually watch releases early, though.
My favorite things to get from patreon are off topic bonus episodes (like, “this has nothing to do with my channel, i just like talking about it” stuff), and photos of pets. One of my patreon subscriptions (iAmMoshow the Cat Rapper) is almost exclusively for the cat photos.
Also, I was a patron for the podcast You’re Wrong About before they even had any bonuses at all lol. You can just start it and add stuff later-people already want to support you, even without bonuses.

I also get the bad feelings when asking people for money. :/
I decided to do a patreon for my youtube channel (not this account) after I saw Amanda Palmer's TED talk about asking fans for money. She makes some great points that made me feel like less of a piece of shit! :D I feel the first hurdle is truly recognizing your work really is worth something to other people and sometimes all it takes is to ask.
Feeling bad about asking working class people for money, I found a thing called "buy me a coffee" (iirc) so people dont have to sign up for something. They can just shoot you a couple bucks when they can.
    I wish you luck ^_^

-Refusal of Work by David Frayne
      -Bullsh!t Jobs by David Graeber
The first one is also full of citations to a lot of academic texts and essays, which I also have been spending a lot of time reading.
Bertrand Russell is another great read, for the more poetic type philosophical stuff about work.
David Graeber is a gem because he is an anthropologist and so many of his books are centered around "There is more potential to human civilization that what we are currently doing"

Heck I have a garage. I must be a future millionaire in disguise. I have always doubted the full sincerity of these garage stories. As you said many of them probably have some advantage that put them in that position. Such as having parents that are not what most would call even rich but still well enough off that a child can live with them and not have a normal job. This child could then take the time to develop a skill or business in these proverbial garages that sets them up for life or success.

Google was a PhD project part-funded by the CIA.
Jeff Bezos, as explicitly stated in the garage seller's own web blurb - *_had quit a successful Wall Street job!_*
This it-could-be-anybody mythology of the plucky little guy building a trillion dollar company with nothing but hard work and a great idea (but definitely not a big bunch of free money [or in Apple's case, free Xerox IP] and good connections) is one of capitalism's more sickening swindles.

Hello everyone, well if I'm permitted to speak I think Investing right now should be at the top of everyone's list. In 2years you will be ecstatic with the decision you made today! Bitcoin is the most secure run on the largest decentralized computer network in existence.
