I wasn't. if you're humble enough. life is too complex to pin down to a story. you have to be honest, and clear with your self. instead of feeling pressured and having to make something up to the other person. one day at a time and being flexible.

    Trick question is right.
    (Applied to an IT company)
Q: How do you see yourself in 5 years?
A: Building my music career, joining competitions and improving in piano
That's when I realized I was too honest... wrong answer. But it may have been better for me not to work for them.
...Why can't job applications be as simple as "I have the skill, hire me and I'll do your work for you"?

Last time I got this question, I answered that I wanted to keep learning, pursue evening classes to prepare for (higher diploma, certification) in the field that the recruiter was currently recruiting me for. Even if 5 years is not the exact time frame for that in most cases, it worked well for the interview, got the job.

    • @strictnonconformist7369
      @strictnonconformist7369 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

In tech, 5 years is effectively an eternity. If you don’t keep learning, you don’t keep earning. Apple came out with the Swift programming language in 2014 (thanks, Apple, for making the name be effectively unsearchable!) and I’ve joked if you want to learn a new programming language every year, learn Swift! It is evolving that fast.
I figured out by that point that sooner or later Apple would be using their own processors in the Mac lineup, and that is now the case, bur they’re performing better than I would have expected compared to Intel/AMD chips.
There are so many things that have arrived in this last 5 years in my realm I couldn’t predict, though, let alone the timeframe. I don’t foresee that fact changing!

Just wanted to say thank you. I have watched all these videos, and they have helped tremendously. As a 'veteran' in my field, I thought I knew the best way to handle interviews, but turns out I don't. I approached things the incorrect way. I since adjusted my interview strategy and have now advanced into the final rounds at a potential company! Thanks again!

I had a job interview that was exactly like this; an interrogation. One of the interviewers, the Security Manager for an Aerospace/Manufacturing company, was a retired police Detective. I felt like I was going to be arrested and put in jail after that interview for not confessing to a crime I did not commit. All of the questions were part of a script they used on every candidate to compare scores. I failed the interview miserably because I wasn't prepared for some of the questions. It was a great learning experience, even though I did not get the job.

It allows one to connect with a human being that will eventually be your boss (providing you’re not just doing a HR interview) and let’s them get to know you as a person.

Also don’t say “I plan on leaving and starting my own business” - as employeer that is such a red flag, you almost immediately disqualify yourself even if the rest of the interview was stellar - we are trying to see where we can place you within the the company - and if you are someone worth investing training, time, money etc
If you say I am going to start my own business what you were essentially saying is, I’m going to take all the training time, effort, energy, and everything that I’ve learned from the clock you on the job potentially take your clients away to go start my own business
This is happened a few times. That’s why bring it up.

On my last job interview, I was not really prepared for this question. I was a bit naive and also the position was supposed to be for a limited time to do only one specific project at the company. I just answered that I would like to take the role as technical lead, which is not a smart answer given that the technical lead was basically my main interview partner. In essence I told him that I want to take his job. I got the job anyways and he left the company even before I had my first day, because the technical lead wanted to become team leader and the company just didn't see him in this position. So, that happened 4.5 years ago. Now, I am technical lead for 2 years or so and this year I will become team leader. So, I didn't only got his job as I said I would do in the job interview, but I even got the job that he wasn't able to get.

That said, if I’m not in the very same situation 5 years from now, I will have *failed* my stability goal.

A friend was interviewing at a law firm and got the "where in 5 years" question. He said he hoped to be a farmer. Funny, but he didn't get the job.

Thanks, 1k! No one's future is really clear - and if they think it is, they're living in a dream world. So don't feel bad - you rule.

On the other hand, a CEO who was promoting me during troubling times within the company, was outlining his ideas for the future of the company. I got suspicious and asked him, "Where do you see this company in 5 years?" His answer was, "I have trouble getting through this year...one year at a time."...After that I had no confidence in where the company and CEO ...where I put my heart into for several years. I felt a sense of doom...and in fact because there WAS no long term vision, the company did fold.
I think it's just as important for employees to ask the same of "executives"!

So if you have an expectation they cannot meet and they drop you because of that, that is bad? I'd rather that be out in the open and I move on to my next opportunity rather than find out months later that this is a bad fit.
