    Started my daughters glk350 to move out of the garage. Shut it off and then it wouldn’t start after trying to start again. Had zero idea about the esl issue on Mercedes despite owning 7 of them since 2005. Went to MBWorld to access possible diagnosis and found Michael there. Navigated to his TH-cam. After speaking with my Mercedes dealer, found out they were scheduling out weeks so decided to tackle it myself. With Michael’s Mercedes videos and text communication I was easily able to work my way through the problem. Working with Michael was a great experience. He excels in teaching, communication, pricing and efficiency. I highly recommend Michael and his solution to this problem. I rarely promote or review but Michael is a valuable resource to all Mercedes Benz owners who want to take action to fix their problem. Thank You Michael! 🙏🏻

    I can’t say enough good things about Michael, his expertise, attitude, helpfulness and ability to explain things thoroughly!
    I had this exact ESL issue with my 2010 C300. I took it to the dealer and was quoted almost $3000 to replace ESL, EIS and reprogram. To add insult to injury, EIS is on back order with no ETA. Dealer told me they had another car there for more than six months waiting for the part!
    I promptly brought the car back home and searched TH-cam where I found this video, where Michael walks you step by step through the process of replacing the ESL with his emulator.
    I was able to follow instructions, remove the faulty part, overnight the EIS, receive and install the parts in four days at a cost of $350 (including $100 for overnight shipping both ways). Car is up and running just as indicated in the video! Great job Michael and Mercedes Benz Specialist!

    I can’t thank you enough for the service you provide.
    You turned a big repair that requires dealership expertise into a DIY project.
    The knowledge and experience that you provide is second to none.
    Your willingness to help every question I had was amazing.
    Every single response helped tackle an issue I was having removing and replacing.
    I can’t forget to mention the fast turn around on reprogramming a new ESL module during a holiday weekend.
    Absolutely grateful!

It arrived at his place on Friday and back to mine on Monday! Plugged it back it in and boom! $1800 bucks saved! If I can do it anyone can do it! Make sure you have the right tools, a mirror and a little patience. My estimate. 2 hours to pull the ESL (if unlocked) and 1 hour to put it all back together. Thanks Michael!

    Great video! Thank you so much. 2 comments, 1, you breezed over the hardest part, removing the yellow connector. There’s a clip that has to be removed from that first.
    2, you absolutely do not need that key ring removal tool. I just used 2 picks and grabbed 2 of the little teeth on the ring and spun it.

    • @mercedesbenzspecialist
      @mercedesbenzspecialist  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The yellow connector is hard to get to if you don’t remove the steering wheel. I recommend removing the steering wheel. It’s easier that way.
      You’re right about the plastic nut that retains the EIS. You don’t need the removal tool. It’s not on very tight.

    Michael is just awesome. He fixed my ignition switch issue very quickly for very minimal cost($250) that dealership would charge anywhere from $1500-$2000. No regular mechanics could fix it because of programing matter but Michael can. Mercedes has such a reccuring problem with EIS/ESL that I already had an experience with in the past. Watched his videos and directly contacted him which he responded immediately and shipped my part from Texas. He programmed and installed emulator within 20-30 mins upon receipt and shipped parts back on the same day!!
    All I had to spend was just about $550 in total including shipping & installation cost for my own mechanic. If anyone has same problem, contact Michael. He will take care of it!! And save $1000 or more. Can't be happier. Thanks again Michael!

    Works like a charm, turn around time was fast. If you have electronic telescopic and tilt wheel, after removing steering wheel and multifunction switch, remove brake pedal and bracket so you'll be able to remove steering column.

    • @mercedesbenzspecialist
      @mercedesbenzspecialist  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good tip. Another tip: Using the electronic steering column adjustment switch. Make the column as short as possible. If it’s short, you can remove just the acceleration pedal which takes about 1 minute to do. 👍

    @nurzat0601 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yoo great informative video, where and how do you bang on the steering lock from underneath? I can’t seem to be able to see it or fine a good placement to bang on it?

    • @mercedesbenzspecialist
      @mercedesbenzspecialist  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You must remove the kick panel, take a small hammer and get up over the steering column where the ESL is bolted in. You can also take the steering wheel in your hands and bang it back and forth with medium to strong force. This may release the motor gears and you might get another turn out of your steering lock. If it does operate, you'll be able to start the car and move it to a good location or drive it to a shop.
      If you do get it to open, don't take the key out of the ignition. Disconnect the negative battery cable, before you remove the key from the ignition. You can turn the car off, just don't remove the key from the ignition. This way, the ESL is in the open position and you won't have to remove the entire steering column. Saves a lot of time.

    Great video! I’m starting to have ESL problems on my 2014 C250. Mine has stopped working in the “unlocked” position so I can still turn my wheel but it doesn’t start. Is it the little motor in the ESL that goes bad?

    • @mercedesbenzspecialist
      @mercedesbenzspecialist  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. The problem starts with the little motor. Then the NEC chip on the circuit board can lock up. When that happens, replacing that motor won’t help.
      Replacing that motor works 50% of the time if you do it correctly. The other half are locked chips. Can’t do anything About that. You need an emulator to replace the ESL.

    I replaced the lock with an emulator and it worked great. Unfortunately, several months after installing the emulator, the transmission conductor plate failed and had to be replaced. The transmission shop was unable to program the new conductor plate because of the emulator. I ended up having to have a new ESL installed and after the installation, the shop was able to fully program the conductor plate. Fortunately, I know the owner of the Mercedes dealership, so I got the new ESL for their cost and they installed it for free.

    • @mercedesbenzspecialist
      @mercedesbenzspecialist  ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi, I have this problem unfortunately I'm in the UK so I can't use you, but if I replace the faulty motor will that need programming to the vehicle? Or can I just replace the motor and keep the original esl without programming?

    • @mercedesbenzspecialist
      @mercedesbenzspecialist  ปีที่แล้ว

      You can replace the motor. There is a 50/50 chance that it will work again if you put it back together correctly.
      The two switches on the circuit board must be in the depressed position before you close it back up and plug it in.
      Even then, if your circuit board has the NEC chip locked. It’s still not going to work. It is worth a try.

    How did you pull the whole steering column out I thought you would have to go through the bottom

    • @mercedesbenzspecialist
      @mercedesbenzspecialist  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There are two types of telescoping steering columns.
      The electronic and the manual.
      If you have the electronic one. You have three combination switches on the left side of your steering wheel. Turn signal, cruise control, and steering column adjustment. This one does not fit through the dash. It needs to come out through the bottom. Search my videos for that version.
      The manually adjustable steering column can fit through the dash.
      If you need the esl emulator programmed it can be purchased on our website.

      Yes you can.
      You must unplug the factory esl when it is in the unlocked position. (Key inserted into EIS)

    • @mercedesbenzspecialist

      The steering lock can fail in the unlocked position. That’s less common, but it does happen.
      If your steering wheel doesn’t lock when you remove the key. That’s as sure a sign of a failed ESL as a steering wheel that won’t unlock when you insert the key into the ignition switch.
      The surest way to know is to scan the EIS module.
      iCarsoft MB II is an affordable scanner that is able to go into all the modules in your Mercedes.

    Faulty by design. Yeah agreed. Just turned mine in "simulator".. The fault was made by some plastic that stopped halfway the rotating gear. Electronics was ok. So I opened up the aluminium box, removed that little plastic garbage, remounted all and luckily my car was back. That's a really short resume of something that took a whole week ( 2h after day job ). In addition my left door handle broke at the same time. Still wondering if its linked or not.. I took out they and opened the door at the same time very fast so... ?
    Note that putting back the steering in place is a real pain in the ass. 3h yesterday afternoon to put back daddy in mummy ( yeah I did no mark ).
    Now that box is "glued" along the steering, ready to be removed and replaced the next time it dies, by a true simulator.
    As an electronician, this kind of shit should be banned from vehicles. As long as when it works, a modern stealer will bypass it and take the vehicle anyway. The only one who is fucked in this situation is the customer. You pay to be annoyed.

  • @KenHeer1

    Found a guy on youtube (th-cam.com/video/BoVSH6DP1c8/w-d-xo.html) that demonstrated how you could get the car running again so it could be driven to a dealership or home or whatever. He pulled the 7.5 amp fuse from spot 27 in the fuse block, then put a jumper in place of the starter relay. This got me back to the house. What's the long term issue with running like this; putting a toggle switch and push button in place of the pulling the fuse and the jumper on the relay. My steering lock is not engaged but the symptoms are present.

    • @mercedesbenzspecialist
      @mercedesbenzspecialist  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve seen this trick done a few times. Not with a jumper switch, but with the cover off the starter relay. 3/5 times I’ve seen damaged front fuse and relay modules that needed replacement.
      Maybe it was because of this trick, or maybe it was just getting into the front SAM too frequently to jump the starter relay. I’m not sure if this was the cause of the front SAM going bad.
      The emulator solution is a permanent fix that may save your front SAM. It cost $250. I would recommend this over jumping the starter relay.
