    • @plantemor
      @plantemor 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

It's because stand up comedy is a male expression of humor.
There are tons of hilarious women out there, but most of them express their humor in a more introverted way. Through web comics, writing, memes and, like Lauren, alone, in front of a camera where performing for the audience is more cozy and non-threatening, if it makes sense.
In my family my sister was the stand up comedian at home. Absolutely fucking hilarious, but when she was out in the real world she was subdued and would only show her humorous side around people she was comfortable with.
I am much the same and so are a lot of women I know. We are hilarious, we just don't show our humorous sides to random strangers we don't trust. Not all, but there is a trend there.
This is why I hate the "women aren't funny" line because it is always said with the context of standup while entirely ignoring all the other less in your face avenues of expression when it comes to humor. We are funny, we are just not funny on command for the most part.

12:14 Great point by Rags about how movie makers have completely lost the point and the purpose of making movies. Movies are not "gifts" that have been bestowed on us by our "betters." Our relationship with movie studios is strictly transactional. We don't don't "owe" them our loyalty or our patronage. We gave them money and THEY owe us a product that isn't sh*tty.

It's such a powerful argument that people have forgotten how to use. Money is a hard thing to acquire, for most people. Usually involves work, and for many that means hard, laborious work. Lifting heavy things, walking/traveling large distances in a day, dealing with irrational, foul-tempered people, putting your hands and/or feet into something really disgusting, breathing chemicals that might be killing you slowly, that kind of stuff. And money is powerful, too. It can be used to buy property, personal vehicles, acquire higher education, and buy you things that make your every day easier and more pleasant. For someone to willingly exchange something so valuable that fought tooth and nail to earn for something as frivolous as an afternoon in a loud, dark room, surrounded by strangers, they better be getting something REALLY worthwhile in exchange. Anything less is a bold-faced insult.

If movie critics only reviewed movies they liked or "good" movies, then everything they don't review would be considered "bad" by default. But there are soooooo many movies that don't get reviewed due to the volume of the movies released each year, so a bunch of movies that haven't been reviewed would just be considered "bad" and left alone.
Here's the best part; eventually, we'd (the general movie going public) figure out that there are definitely good movies being missed and dive into the "unreviewables" separating the wheat from the chaff on our own and naturally undermine these snooty d-bags in the process. XD

And if we agree that Studio meddling is making movies worse, shouldn't we still be identifying bad films so studios know "okay, our oversight is hurting the products that make us money, maybe we shouldn't do this"?
Seriously, calling Madame Web a terrible movie doesn't have to be an attack on the director, whether you think she or Sony was more "in charge" of what was produced. Even film-makers on Twitter would surely want more good and less bad movies to come out of the industry?

You know when I learned making media was hard? I was a little kid, playing Star Wars: Republic Commando. For each campaign completed, you unlocked a behind-the-scenes video. There was a concept art montage, an interview with Temuera Morrison, the foley artist talking about and showing how they made the game's sound effects, and a look at how they brought in military advisors to teach them how a special forces squad would operate. It was not only fucking awesome, but it was eye-opening even when I was 7 or 8 years old.
It did not take a lot of brainpower to go on with my life and transfer this knowledge onto other things. Making things is hard, to varying degrees and with varying levels of success. It wasn't difficult to understand then, and it's certainly much easier to understand now.

The idea that because you make films you're so sympathetic to the process that you can no longer express negative opinions on the entire medium is stupid.
At the very least he could have pivoted towards making a video filled with constructive criticism, pointing out major failings while giving opinions on what could have been done differently.
But nothing is gained when he goes to watch a bad film, sits down in front of the camera, and refuses to levy any significant criticism at the film.

And when they make a bad take its, "oh well, I'll do better next time," when in the average working world, a mistake like that will cost you not only money, but the opportunity to work more and make more money.

Pretty much every occupation is difficult. Difference is that these Hollywood filmmakers's job is to make good films that make money, and they're paid very well to do just that. If you don't criticize or call them out when they don't do their job well, they're going to keep producing garbage.

The perfect counter to Chris is the OG's: RLM. Since the start, they've made their own movies (and Space Cop later) and constantly reference their own experience when criticizing others.
We all know, they are definitely not afraid of calling a movie shit, but they tend to look into and deduce who's at fault before making blanket statements.

It's a fair point, but in general, practical knowledge is superior theoretical knowledge. The difference in reading a book on how to swim versus diving into the water, can be vast. There are cases where an individual lords over people with their practical knowledge, but in general practice gives nuance theory will never get. Stress, intensity, managing emotion, talking about robbing a bank is much different than standing in front of a bank, being like, "Lets do this"

Saying "He's actually MADE a film!" followed by Rags' explanation reminds me that playing a game doesn't make your opinion any more valid or reasonable than someone who hasn't if you're clearly playing it wrong or poorly. It's like saying Warframe is too hard because you're doing a high-level Defense with an Offensive warframe. I main Excalibur all the time, as in the 3 Warframes I switch between are Excalibur and occasionally Rhino or Frost depending on if I'm doing something Defense or Survival related. Just because you loaded up the game and spent 40 hours unlocking all the missions doesn't mean you can speak on it's quality if you genuinely lack an understanding of the game you've played

Sometimes that always strikes me is when people seem to think their ignorance makes them better and smarter.
The sheer immaturity of someone being thoroughly ignorant and uncritical, in this case, about the difficulties of film making, that they think getting one (1) experience point on it makes them better and more mature than anybody else.

The thing that I find particularly funny about this whole thing is no shit these movies fail. Morbius and Madame Web are about as fucking Z-List as you can get. Who are we gonna do next and be "genuinely" shocked that it failed? A fucking Flamingo movie? Or maybe Professor Pyg spin-off from The Batman? And all of these films are things that people have zero interest in seeing anyway. This stopped being about movies a long time ago and pretending to give a shit is laughable. Hahaha.

    • @stainedclassv0114

I think that it is entirely possible to make a successful movie out of a Z-List property that only the biggest geeks knew about. I mean, Blade and Guardians Of The Galaxy weren't exactly well known before those successful and enduring movies came out, but I think it's the fucking horrible execution of these movies, promotions, and products more than anything else.
