I just do. It's what you do on election Sunday after breakfast. But then my country has automatic voter registration and it takes me 5 minutes to walk to my polling station. 35 min for the whole affair, including a stop at the bakery for bread rolls. If I had to register, fight for being registered, take a day off, wait in line for hours and drive for miles in order to cast my vote, I might give up on democracy as well. But that's the most depressing part: if you stop doing it, things just get worse. And one day you might realize that it's too late and your vote really doesn't count anymore.

    • @75egcg
      @75egcg 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

Yeah. In the US we may not even get a day off to vote, or get threatened with our jobs for leaving early or in the middle of a work day. In a lot of cases registration is arduous and getting a voter ID is next to impossible. Even if you are eligible doesn’t mean you can afford it.

See, my polling station is 5 miles away, nowhere near town (it's in the township hall) and a lot of people in my area have no idea where to vote because nothing is posted.
They make it hard in my area for most people to get the vote out. I offered to drive carpools and it helped get an extra 100 voters, but it just wasn't enough with the epic gerrymandering in Michigan. Look up Michigan 4th district and you'll see what I mean.

    • @DepressinglyOptimistic

@Frederic Bastiat believe it or not some people work and commute that can take up such time. You have to vote by your house, so if you have a 14 hour day including your commute you can miss a voting period.
Plus in most cases you have to have an illness, be in court or the hospital, or out of the area to use an absentee ballot.
Your verbal abuse is completely unnecessary.

Frederic Bastiat, you’re just a troll defending a fake democracy. As the first commenter I live in a country where voting is a breeze and citizens don’t have to go through hurdles to exercise their right. As a result turnout it’s always well over 70%. When only few actually can vote it’s not a democracy, no matter how much you spam this thread.

@Frederic Bastiat "A huge population guarantees a mass of power in the Electoral College." Welcome to America, we're a democratic nation.
"Geographically speaking, Democrats are a very regionally based party." Even if this is true, people are still people, regardless of where they live, and in a democratic republic, all people (who meet the needed requirements) can vote.
As for California's "mass of power," the state of California has passed legislature ensuring that all EC votes go to the winner of the national popular vote. Yes, that does mean that if Donald Trump got the popular vote in 2020, California would go red.

@Frederic Bastiat A) No. It doesn't. That's why we have a constitution. To limit the role of mob rule.
      B) Nice try, but you do realise that most people are now aware of the party switch, yes? That was a different time. Now, people are starting to propose an Equal Rights Amendment to ensure that shit like that can never happen again.
      C) Are you calling Amazon, which, just recently, paid $0 in taxes to the US government, a taxpayer? Rich people got rich off of our society, and our society isn't going to let them run off with the profits. Not while people are starving, and when we have more peopleless houses than houseless people. If you haven't noticed, the founding fathers agreed with this sentiment. The constitution allows the government to tax its people.
      D) We have one. The constitution. When it was first created, it was designed to be amended when needed. This allows us to change our constitution as the times themselves change. "Why government is so anti-liberty?" What's so fucking anti-liberty about giving people a decent education? About making sure that people won't go bankrupt because their child is ill?
      E) No. It's a social contract. It's why we don't have constant murders, rapes and acts of slavery and instead have phones, computers and any rights at all.

As a Canadian, I wear a poppy when I vote and, if possible, I never miss a vote, whether it is federal, provincial or city. This is my way of honoring the millions of men and women worldwide who have died fighting for freedom and human rights. Voting is MORE than a right. It is the duty and responsibilty of every citizen in a free society. I truly believe that people get the government they deserve, especially those who don’t vote. And if non-voters in the USA are waiting for the GOP to make it easier for them to vote, they shouldn’t hold their breath. They have to fight and overcome the obstacles being put in their way to restore their rights and elect people of character, courage, honesty and integrity into office, regardless of party.

    • @maggielapensee1619

Erin I also agree with what you are saying. For many people it is very difficult, if not impossible, to vote because of these barriers that unscrupulous politicians put in their way. That is why all people who are able to vote without endangering their livelihood must do so. And if we vote for good people, they will then take the steps necessary to put policies in place that make it easier, and not harder, for all citizens to vote. A party that has to suppress the vote to win is not a party that is functioning in the interests of all citizens (i.e. rich, poor, middle class, white, black, brown, red, christian, muslim, atheist, male, female, LBTGQ, transgender, disabled, veterans, etc...,)

We know where they are. ... Let’s start playing offense a little bit. That’s what you’re going to see in 2020. It’s going to be a much bigger program, a much more aggressive program, a much better-funded program.”

You're missing one of Robert's points. There are a LOT of nonvoters spread throughout the country including in what seem to be "safe" red states. They tend to be the states with some of the worst gerrymandering effects & voter suppression laws. If the voter suppression was overcome then these people might vote & control the electoral college. The gerrymandering only effects house races & Senate races are won by popular vote. The electoral college only applies to the presidency & the national voting right act or dividing the electoral vote among candidates can help circumvent it in some states

Motivating young voters is so true. I'm a young, tight person myself and I've been very active in voting lately because of what's been happening in the US recently. When I've spoken with some of my friends about those things and if they voted, I've heard a lot that they just didn't. So absolutely we need to have the support of these people who tend to have pretty good heads on their shoulders.
Also, agree with others that there are other problems that need to be solved like Gerrymandering.

One would like to believe that younger generation are more open, tolerant etc. However, time and time again we get proven wrong as political affiliations, world views and the likes are influenced by the surroundings they grow up in or the media they consume. The internet shows how much nasty is out there and how much younger folks are influenced by righwing propaganda. Pew-Di-pi who has over 100 mio followers, mostly teens, is a guy who lets his rightwing idealogy slip out more and more. Many young people bash progressives, multi culti, feminisist etc. as they like to blame those for their own shortcomings. Trolls often dominate the internet and their comments do resonate with and inlfuece young minds.
In Germany, we had federal state elections recently, and in the former GDR states more millenials voted for the righwing AFD party than older people did. In some of those states up to 30% of millenials voted for them. In Western Germany it's different. That means that younger people in red states in the US will also be highly influneced by the anti liberal and anti leftwing rhetoric of their communities. Then you need to consider that young people who are more open, less tribal and potentially Dem candidates tend to move to blue states and left behind are the kids with the conservative mindset. With more and more Dem voters moving to blue states, the red states become redder and redder while. Then we have more people moving out of Cali nowadays, however, if you look at who is moving out, then you'll see that most of them are Rep voters. Because of your dumb electoral college it is possible that one day Rep will always win because of it. Polls often show that younger people are often more conservative (ok, one could of course hope and think that they just give joke answers but I am somewhat worried). More younger people care for the environment now, but that's maybe a jump from 10% to 20%, that leaves 80% who still give a fuck.
Look at Australia which has mandatory voting, the idiots again voted for the bullshit party who is dead det on selling out Australias unique nature. Robert says here that non voters are more likely to be left, but I somehow question that. If Australians, who are thought to be more progressive than USAmericans vote rightwing, then I bet if every USAmerican was taken into account that Reps would win. That said, I think voting should be mandatory. I'd like to be proven wrong about the people. But history teaches me to always bet on stupid

    Some more options:
    - make it a law that every ballot must contain an option of "none of the above" so it's easy to spoil it on purpose, and easy to count it as such
    - make it a law that when a citizen votes, they get a receipt which they bring to their employer to get paid for that day-off. That way, a statutory holiday will also be used to vote, rather than merely taking a long-weekend.
    - incentivize employers to give employees the day off, even before it becomes a law. Offer additional tax discounts to employers who give their employees the election day off. Corporations might back that option because they'll profit from it.
    - spread the election over multiple days. Allow Friday through Tuesday. Heck, make it a week. Traditions can change. Black Friday sales now tend to be week-long events.
    - allow people to vote at any polling station they want (edit: within their district, to ensure they are still voting in the right district for their actual candidate)
    - let's get radical. Allow partisan voting centers. They can be policed by the sponsoring party, who can finance and manage secure busing in armored trucks directly in and out of a secured facility, so that voters are never exposed to intimidators. The actual voting room inside could remain neutral, with reps from both parties supervising and counting ballots as per normal

I'd say the biggest contributor to voter apathy is the Reapportionment Act of 1929 limiting the size of Congress indefinitely. This has concentrated power into a proportionally smaller and smaller group of individuals who are further and further removed from any semblance of democracy. The whole idea of having proportional representation in the House was to preserve as close to a democratic process in the legislative branch. The Constitution was written to limit House Representatives to no more than thirty thousand people. On average, districts are approaching one million people per representative. We basically have two Senates. Restore the House to represent the people as laid out in the Constitution, and we will see more voter turnout by people who are energized to vote for someone they might actually know, or be able to walk into their office and talk to them.

I think it should be mandatory to vote if you are a citizen. It's our OBLIGATION to have an opinion on who leads our country. I say mandatory vote or get a fine deducted from tax return.

I am Canadian. I have worked as a poll clerk in several federal and provincial elections. It blows my mind that American elections don't require voters to present identification.
Here in Canada voters must go to their designated voting place AND specific voting box. Pairs of polling clerks are given their specific list of voters they are allowed to issue ballots to and accept those same ballots from. Voters must A: present picture identification (driver's license or other government issued photo identification) or B: two pieces of non-photo identification PLUS proof of current address that matches the information in the voter list or C: have another voter vouch for them, another voter who has met A or B AND who has NOT vouched for more than one other person.
Government issued photo identification is easy to obtain. Every population centre with more than a few thousand people has a government services office which can issue identification. The few percent of Canadians who live more rurally do have hurdles to overcome. The vast majority have very little excuse for not having government issued photo identification.

Huh. So mobilize young voters with big ideas and candidates with a lot of energy.
    So, I mean, Yang?

    • @CassidyCope

Yang, in my opinion, is currently unqualified for the office of president. The last rich guy with no political experience who we hired didn't really turn out well.
I like the idea of UBI, and I think Yang _could_ be a president one day, but he'd need some actual political experience (maybe in the cabinet of the next president) and to be a bit more inspiring. As nice as UBI is, it feels like that's all he talks about, and despite literally promising free money to virtually all Americans, he's proposed the standard M4A with an asterisk. UBI can't cover sudden medical expenses, nor should it have to.

@@CassidyCope he's the second lowest net worth out of all of the candidates.
Further, he has more policies than any other candidate. Human centered capitalism, democracy dollars and ranked choice voting to name a few. I implore you to do a little bit of research and maybe check out one of his long form interviews. Guy knows his stuff.
