  • "To sand or not to sand? That is my question."
KXK Dynamics and I work through a video series discussing more advanced sanding and polishing techniques. Jason Killmer, generally regarded as the best wet sander in the world, and Andy Ward, also known as Proficient X, made the trip to OGHQ to drop some knowledge on me.
In Episode 6, Jason show us what it takes to remove orange peel on a show car.

My god, in 2017 I would have killed for this video when I was trying to learn showcar technique and nobody seemed to show it and there were no resources. WHAT A GEM OF A VIDEO! Learned more from this in 10 mins than I did in a year and half scraggling around forums. God bless the guy for asking so many questions. This is the most useful vid on TH-cam for me

This has been a really good series, thank you Matt and KXK. This would still scare me to do but its cool to watch.

This is very interesting to watch and really makes you rethink the typical ways most of us have learned to do. I have always been one to never stick to the small crosshatch process as I have always felt it would heat the paint too much. Definitely would love to get a hood to do some of these techniques. Great video series.

I just did my whole truck.... Not sure if i wish i had watched this video before or glad that i didnt.
It took me 2 weeks to sand the whole thing down to primer, then paint and another 2 weeks to paint correct and another week to cut, polish and wax...
Im so slow this method would habe taken me 3 months.

The key to ensure your movement is consistent is to look at the slurry pattern and make it look like the pattern left from polishing

Why would they not use different grit sandpaper or sanding discs on a DA to sand a whole hood or car?

What kind of microfiber towels are they using? Just basic Costco ones? Does it not matter much because all of this is before polish?

@@overestcaut I was just rewatching this series and saw that you asked this question multiple times. I don't quite understand your question, but will help you if I can. " SANDING CONTROL " ? Are you referring to the sanding blocks they are using ? They are KXK sanding blocks. They very small ones are called KXK ( companies name ) RID STIX, they are sold on Amazon, for spot scratch removal. I have a set, you get 2 soft and 2 hard, they are great. The larger ones you can buy in sets from many places.

Moral of the story, don't sand the hell out of an OEM paint job. Learn to live with a small amount of orange peel and don't be so damn anal about being perfect. Life is still good with a shiny car that doesn't have big scratches. :) And if you have a car that you are going to show, get a painter who knows what they are doing so you don't have to spend thousands removing orange peel and half the clear coat you just payed for.
