I loved Julie Harris too- and had the privilege of meeting her in 1996, when I (via radio) discussed a lot of her career. What a legend. An American who came to the theatre just as it was going through it's NYC Method School renaissance; a very exciting time. Just a beautiful, gentle woman who- from what I recollect- could still remember the sweetness of James Dean's kiss, from forty years before.
I saw her in "The Belle of Amherst" in the late 1970's. I was astounded by her acting and how she BECAME Emily Dickinson. Starring in a one-person show, on stage alone, no cues or aids from other actors must be one of the most difficult tasks in the art. But man, did she nail it!
She came off as so true in her acting. I loved her chemistry with James Dean in "East of Eden" & I sensed she really did earn his trust. The scenes with the two of them (my favorite being the ferris wheel)....she is able to keep his gaze & his excessive mannerisms disappeared. His acting really came from within his soul & they really were the most beautiful scenes in the entire movie.
I’m actually glad he didn’t. She’s such an excellent actress I would prefer to hear her opinion on her craft then some goulash gossip about a dead colleague.
@@peteradaniel Why would it be gossip rather than true-life recollections of working with her co-star? He was only in 3 movies, so it wouldn't be a common question. (And I thought EOE was his best and a high-quality film.)
Living near her childhood home in MI, I first saw her on TV, then movies, and finally plays --- as well as in person. Her talent was equaled by her kindness.
I just watched “ The hiding Place”...engulfing! She plays Betsie, the Sister of Corrie Ten Boom...they’re entire family helped many Jewish people from the nazis by hiding them in their home. It was very bittersweet to watch. I highly recommend it. They never wavered in faith and their love of God is Glorified 🌈
So glad I got to see her on stage in her one-woman show as Emily, as Mrs. Lincoln and in a comedy. One of my most favorite actresses ever. I love the story Chas. Nelson Reilly told of how she played the entire show of "Belle" for Shirley Booth on her porch after which Shirley paid her the greatest compliment by saying "where did Julie go?"
I was fortunate enough to have seen Ms. Harris in three national tours, two in Cincinnati at the Shubert Theater: "And Miss Reardon Drinks A Little" and a strange play costarring James Broderick (father of Matthew) and (I believe) James Coco, in three acts about the same three characters--husband, wife and her younger brother--who regress from maturity to young adulthood to preadolescence through each act. I later saw her at the Fox Theater in Atlanta in "The Belle of Amherst." She was luminous in each.
The greatest actress on the stage and you can forget Knots Landing that she lowered herself to do!! She was Emily Dickinson brought to life in a mesmerizing performance! Just adore and miss her terribly!!
Lower herself to do? That's pretty harsh considering every role she ever played, including Lillie Mae on Knots Landing, was a fine performance. She brought so much to her role on this nighttime drama. Why berate her because you look down at her choice to do a weekly top 20 series that clearly paid her well but also gave many the opportunity to see her perform in a unique role like she had never done before.
Unique talent. I think of Betsy Blake when I watch her. So timid. Not many roles to fit this character but when one is found she makes it shine. I loved her out of character role in Harper (1966).
Why does nobody mention Skyscraper, the Broadway musical? It was a sharp, funny show, with a couple of great songs and she was great in it. And in spite of not being a singer she convinced everyone that she was. The cast recording is on Spotify. Have a listen if you're real fan! This interviewer was beyond irritating.
Her emotional (including tears) accounts of some moments during her career shows her genuine ability to be real and not be afraid to bare her soul.

She was the only actress who could bring you to tears on "Knots Landing." Any thing she did was worth watching.
