Probably the reason why EVERYONE stood up for Ms Hepburn was because they respected her craft so greatly. I am a massive Meryl Streep fan, and I could say that she is my favourite actor ever - but by GOD Katharine Hepburn was the GREATEST actor of all time.

I was working for a Telemarketing Company in the early 90's. We were working magazine renewals when all of a sudden her name popped up on my computer screen and Katherine Hepburn saying "Hello." I was aghast! We spoke for about 5 minutes & she couldn't have been nicer. Such a thrill! ❤
She had the same attitude that george C Scott had, when he was asked why he refused his Oscar for Patton, he said he knew when he did a good job and didn't need a trophy or somebody to tell him. she was like that, she never covited awards or recognition, she was a very private person who like Bettie Davis..... she did it her way
We cannot compare these Hollywood Legends Like Hepburn to artists today. Hepburn is the only person to have 4 oscars, all of them for leading roles. And she was not just amazing actress brilliant one in fact she was an actual movie star of legendary status. She wasnt sucking up to the Hollywood system to get roles and was blind to the bad things, she was a force of a woman and a true legend. We gave great actress with many many awards but they were never really actual movie stars who media adored and raved about and movie stars that were never actually superb actresses, Hepburn was both.
Stop! There are greats working today as well! Katharine was exceptional but she was also working at a different time. She would NEVER win those five leading actress awards in this day and age, that does not mean to say she isn't worthy of winning them it just means that times change. Meryl Streep and Denzel Washington are two currently working actors who are more than deserving of 5 (or more) leading Oscars!
People say she did not deserve her awards because she wasn't nice are a pathetic bunch... She was a very private person who dared to be tough unlike today's celebrities who act so fake to get where they want to be... The Oscars should be about the best performances. Period. Sometimes, unfortunately, other things come into play and people win for performance she should not win for. Clearly, the performance in the Lion In Winter was worthy. Guess Who's Coming To Dinner, was because of Spencer, as it is the lessor of all of her Oscar performances and given the fact that Dame Edith Evans had rightfully won everything major award up to that point, and should have won the Oscar for The Whisperers, puts that win in the joke category. On Golden Pond was good work, but that was more because of Henry and people voting on both of them. Michelle would have won for Baker Boys had Henry not been on his death bed.

Today, 'stars' exist for one reason.. to lecture me and to virtue signal about their own particular passions - whether not they are rooted in truth. This is why I stopped going to, or purchasing movies. It's just not fun anymore.
I remember having to watch The Lion in Winter for a high school class. Now you know in high school, anything they make you watch in class is dull. And most of my classmates snored through it, but I was fascinated by it. So much that I went and rented it and watched it again. I couldn't take my eyes off the brilliant Katherine Hepburn and how she didn't just play the part, she WAS the part. Definitely one of a kind.
Even in 2022 no one was as great as her. She was a legend and an absolut fascinating human-being. She received 4 Oscars because of how great her Perfomances were. She made her last movie at age 87 in 1994 called "One Christmas". She died 29 years (this was in 1974) after this on June 29th 2003 at age 96. May this gorgeous Lady Rest in Peace.
Her outfit reminds me of something. A friend of mine was visited by his mother, who was extremely rich. I saw her three times and she wore the same ordinary comfortable pantsuit each time, even to a fancy restaurant. Finally I asked if she had nothing better to wear, or at least a change of clothing. The answer came immediately: "She doesn't have to impress anybody."

I always loved her. There are so many of her scenes that still make me cry after all these years. One of my most treasured possessions is my autographed letter from her.
I remember this wonderful evening, watching the Oscars and being utterly suprised to see KH entering to give the IT award. Both speeches were so moving, KH was a unique actress, great among the greatest. She loved to dress casually at all occasions and she did so with utmost elegance. Of course, even her simple clothes were of the highest quality. A beautiful, nononsense lady if there was one.

It is all mechanics with Meryl Streep. Grand standing and mechanics. I've only believed her characters twice; Miranda Priestly and Ethel Rosenberg/Hannah Pitt. The rest is nothing but self indulgence wrapped in make-up prosthetics and faulty accents. With Katharine Hepburn, you got what you paid for. Was she limited? Of course! All actors are limited. It is only they who think they are not. Case in point: Meryl Streep.

He passed in 1977 of Leukemia & was 75. @ Dave Glo…..BTW, Irving Thalberg died really young & was married to Norma Shearer & he died in 1936 of a heart attack. He was only 37 and was also a movie producer for MGM, and really was credited for bringing sophiscated movies to MGM. Norma Shearer was the Merle Streep of her day. Especially her movie "The Women". A movie without a SINGLE man, and FANTASTIC roles. I love reading about "Old Hollywood", where the 'Stars' TRULY acted like stars & NOT a bunch of drug-crazed sex addicts. Actually, they may have been that, but what went on behind closed doors, stayed behind them. For me, those were real Stars, they dressed, looked, acted & spoke like "real" Stars, or what was perceived to have been "real' stars in those days. I just love reading about them. That said, "The Women" was very near the end of Norma Shearer's career, and was director George Cuckor's consolation prize to the ladies who didn't get the Scarlett O'Hara part in "Gone With the Wind." Cuckor was set to direct it and was taken off, but that's another story. Shearer was an enormous star, and it didn't hurt that, as Joan Crawford would tell anyone within earshot, "She married the boss," or worse, "I didn't get where I am on my ass." (That's our Joanie!) Irving Thalberg was more than a producer; he was MGM's head of production, overseeing everything, even on his deathbed. He was enormously powerful as Louis B. Mayer was, but unlike Mayer, very much respected for his artistry. I, too, love reading about the old Hollywood that hasn't existed for years. It's mostly tattooed and pierced no-class and no-talents now.

Katharine Hepburn was my absolute favorite actress when I was 16 and has been all these years! I am now 65 & love her more!! I try to emulate her (I studied to be a classical pianist from 4-23). I will always admire her❤
This was in 1974. Almost 50 years ago. Katharine Hepburn worked until 1994, 20 years after this, at age 87. She died aged 96 in 2003, 9 years after her last movie. Sadly, we'II never get a second Katharine Hepburn.
Brooke Hanley Oh, I loved them in all their films they did together. They worked so well together and there were so many magical moments in every one of their movies. Spencer Tracy has always been one of my favourite actors, along with Gregory Peck and James Stewart.

Myrna Loy was a fine actress who suits your description much better than Hepburn does. Hepburn created that over the top personality be noticed in Hollywood Myrna Loy didn't have to.
What I admire about Katherine Hepburn the most is she was more interested in the craft of acting than being a "star". I think that side of it bored her and she thought it silly. I agree. Usually only British performers fall into that realm but she was an exception and fascinating person. We would be worlds apart in a lot of views but she didn't bang drums on her politics as so many do now and that is boring. She had much more class than that.

I loved her work in "Long Day's Journey Into Night". A very difficult role! Also, Bette Davis was a fellow Yankee, and a big admirer of Miss Hepburn. Bette Davis publicly said that she didn't deserve the Oscar, for "Dangerous"; that Katharine Hepburn gave, by far, the best performance of the year, in "Alice Adams".
There was an uproar because Davis was denied a nomination. Who started it, I never found out. But I have found that someone with an agenda usually initiates these things. Same thing happened with the nominated James Stewart, (for "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington", in 1939. He lost to the very deserving star of "Goodbye, Mr. Chips". If that wasn't enough drama, Clark Gable was the frontrunner, for "Gone with the Wind". So, the next year Stewart won for the forgettable part in "The Philadelphia Story", over his good friend, Henry Fonda, who was nominated for "Grapes of Wrath", whose "Tom Joad" is still quoted to this day. Speaking of friends, Rosalind Russell, lost to her good friend, Loretta Young, when Miss Young was polled as coming in 5th among the Best Actress nominees. When I first read that that she only appeared at the Oscars wearing a pyjamas in protest to the banality of the awards I though two things: first, I pictured her in a nightshirt, not something elegant at all and second, that I agree with her: for so long the Oscars have been more about celebrities than about stars and artist, and they have omitted masterpieces in order to prize movies for economic or political reasons. And it amazes me that the Academy celebrates Hepburn so much and still does not take in consideration her opinion.

Kate Hepburn saluted Lawrence Weingarten who was a great Producer at MGM working with great stars such as Jean Harlow, Myrna Loy, Elizabeth Taylor, Susan Hayward and several times in films with Ms. Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. His last big hit was Debbie Reynolds in Molly Brown.
She was a classy, smart, strong, devoted, and just one awesome lady. girls of today should take a lesson from her and see what it takes to be a positive role model and not bother with the likes of the kardashions, who would not know class if they were standing right in front of it.
tara lang She might have been those things but I read most of the actress during her period did not think highly of her including Ginger Rogers, Lucille Ball, Bette Davis and several others. She had a way of thinking she was better than any other actress instead of embracing the various actress talent. She was a bit put off by Meryl Streep because she saw potential in her that was something she could not do - speak languages to meet the need of that particular part. It is too bad I do admire some of her skills but basically it is style of performances over and over again. Rather monotonous.

Olly4Ever - Everyone has an opinion so to have you disregard my comments is useless. I know what I read and what other said. Plus - as far as acting - I don't see the difference in her performances. I did like her in "Philadelphia" and "Guess Whose Coming To Dinner." For me there wasn't much of a stretch in her acting skills. Compared to others that I found in previous films. One thing I will point out that I do like about her personally she was a "Maverick" meaning unique in her ways.
Angela Carleton - Lynn Turman - what I like about other addresses such as Bette Davis and Olivia de Havilland they fought a good fight to get the studios to allow them to pick and decide what script of movies they wanted - plus the pay was not enough compared to what these young starlets now a days are getting. As for performances - I don't think we will ever see the likes similar to Meryl Streep - who can do just about anything with a "different accent." She trained herself for each of the roles she does and that my dear is something you don't see with other actresses. Plus she is generous and provide guidance to those who seek her advice. Not to mention she is giving and appreciative of those that she has worked with. If you are curious - watch her last Oscar Acceptance Speech. It came directly from the heart!

I personally had no problem with the way she presented herself and I think people who do must be very easily offended, not to mention close minded. If you actually listen to interviews - humility shines through in what she says. A true great.
Knowing and being who you are without making excuses and without apologies for living as you choose is not arrogance. I call that courageous! Most of us don't have that kind of courage. Most of us toe the line and try not to rock the boat. We want to fit in and be liked and admired. My own best moments have been when I did rock the boat and others thought I was out of line. Many couldn't understand or take her her because of it. those that did understand her sing her praises.
Hepburn was one of the most amazing individuals ever to work in Hollywood in any capacity. Aside from being an actress, she was a driven and brilliant business woman. After some early success under contract, she was perceived as being "box office poison" and risked drifting off into oblivion as the studio she was under contract to sidelined her completely. In an unprecedented act of guts and confidence, she took money out of the bank and bought out her own contract. She then went out and purchased the rights to "Philadelphia Story" and won the starring role because she owned the rights. This had never been done in Hollywood, and probably the only time the contract driven studio system was out maneuvered by an actor or actress. There is one thing that stands out so far above any other actress in the business that you can't find any one to compare her to, and that is the talent and ability and pure character to play toe to toe with the biggest male stars as an equal partner in a production. From all the films she did with Spencer Tracey, Humphrey Bogart, John Wayne, Henry Fonda, Lawrence Olivier. And nobody seems to remember perhaps her most remarkable performance in Eugene Oneill's Long Days Journey Into Night with Ralph Richardson. She did a lot of legitimate theater, Shakespeare and even Greek Tragedy in Greece throughout her career; and a host of artistic pictures that people never see or hear about because they were not big box office Hollywood Movies. She took big risks, which is highly unusual for a Hollywood Actress. She wanted to try and expand her range as much as possible and do the most creative things possible. The range of characters is unique. The range of projects is unique. She even won three Emmy nominations for her television film work. True she never tried to change her voice, but anybody that says she just always played herself knows nothing about acting. About her personal demeanor and social attitudes, she had a unique upbringing. Her parents were wealthy New Englanders. But her mother was an important American feminist social reformer and a leader of the suffrage movement in the United States. She was raised extremely progressively for the day. Hollywood tried to retire her and break her many times, but she always found a way to persevere. By the way, if any of the viewers here have not seen Long Day's Journey Into Night, you are missing some greatness; great writing, and a great production of basically the original play directed by Sidney Lumet and with Jason Robards. And I do not know who else could have played this part at that time in this production. It is based on Eugene Oneill's own family history, intertwined with his mother's incurable morphine addiction.
Strong, fascinating, down to earth, talented, humble. She never try to sugar coat her life or personnality. Honest and direct, she was not superficial and ego inflated like many other stars. She never care about prices and oscar, only to give a good performance in great movies.
Hepburn was an original from head to toe. She lived by her own rules...and gave memorable performances over and over. Her later work seemed to get even better. The African Queen is such a great movie...no two could have done it better. Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, another masterpiece, as well as Rooster Cogburn. On Golden Pond, with Henry Fonda, was SO GENUINE AND BELIEVABLE, you could almost believe they were real people. Her comedy chops were so easy for her. I wish I had seen her on stage...same for Helen Hayes.
Oh my goodness. Another gem on YT. I saw some of the original awards show. Of course that was circa 1974; I was about 8 at the time. My mother (the real movie buff) was visibly moved by the entrance of the great Kate, already about 66 or so at the time of this appearance. She turned to me and said, "that's a star, but look how down-to-earth." She made mention of the simple pants suit, sandals, nothing fancy, just Kate doing it- and with a glint in the eye to boot. Thank you so much for this.
Really? Who could have appear in these marvellous clothes except Hepburn? Garbo maybe. But Garbo would have chosen nike or adidas for her feet to come at the Oscars. Hepburn was a very complex person apparently but she seems to have made a choice in her very rich life: simplicity. Not to be bothered with all the bullshit that usually makes this business. Whatever anyone says, she has been the only one in this business who made this incredible Journey (or career). Usually actresses in those days didn't last more than 10 years on the top. She did it for almost 50 years. Some others ( like the beautiful I. Bergman) did a marvellous work too. But did anyone noticed how much women are criticized when they have this kind of talent and creativity? Maybe the world has to change? hasn't it?

I have the same in my hands. The doctor also told me that liquor helps to stop the shaking. Weird.
I forget the medical term, but this nerve disorder has been identified. She was right, it was not Parkinson's.

We cannot compare these Hollywood Legends Like Hepburn to artists today. Hepburn is the only person to have 4 oscars, all of them for leading roles. And she was not just amazing actress brilliant one in fact she was an actual movie star of legendary status. She wasnt sucking up to the Hollywood system to get roles and was blind to the bad things, she was a force of a woman and a true legend. We gave great actress with many many awards but they were never really actual movie stars who media adored and raved about and movie stars that were never actually superb actresses, Hepburn was both.

The Oscars should be about the best performances. Period. Sometimes, unfortunately, other things come into play and people win for performance she should not win for. Clearly, the performance in the Lion In Winter was worthy. Guess Who's Coming To Dinner, was because of Spencer, as it is the lessor of all of her Oscar performances and given the fact that Dame Edith Evans had rightfully won everything major award up to that point, and should have won the Oscar for The Whisperers, puts that win in the joke category. On Golden Pond was good work, but that was more because of Henry and people voting on both of them. Michelle would have won for Baker Boys had Henry not been on his death bed.

I remember having to watch The Lion in Winter for a high school class. Now you know in high school, anything they make you watch in class is dull. And most of my classmates snored through it, but I was fascinated by it. So much that I went and rented it and watched it again. I couldn't take my eyes off the brilliant Katherine Hepburn and how she didn't just play the part, she WAS the part. Definitely one of a kind.

Even in 2022 no one was as great as her. She was a legend and an absolut fascinating human-being. She received 4 Oscars because of how great her Perfomances were. She made her last movie at age 87 in 1994 called "One Christmas". She died 29 years (this was in 1974) after this on June 29th 2003 at age 96. May this gorgeous Lady Rest in Peace.
Her outfit reminds me of something. A friend of mine was visited by his mother, who was extremely rich. I saw her three times and she wore the same ordinary comfortable pantsuit each time, even to a fancy restaurant. Finally I asked if she had nothing better to wear, or at least a change of clothing. I always loved her. There are so many of her scenes that still make me cry after all these years. One of my most treasured possessions is my autographed letter from her.
I remember this wonderful evening, watching the Oscars and being utterly suprised to see KH entering to give the IT award. Both speeches were so moving, KH was a unique actress, great among the greatest. She loved to dress casually at all occasions and she did so with utmost elegance. Of course, even her simple clothes were of the highest quality. A beautiful, nononsense lady if there was one.
I so admire her. She was independent, and didn't need a man or children to make her happy. I love her.

Mr. Weingarten was a movie producer for MGM. He passed in 1977 of Leukemia & was 75. @ Dave Glo…..BTW, Irving Thalberg died really young & was married to Norma Shearer & he died in 1936 of a heart attack. He was only 37 and was also a movie producer for MGM, and really was credited for bringing sophiscated movies to MGM. Norma Shearer was the Merle Streep of her day. Especially her movie "The Women". A movie without a SINGLE man, and FANTASTIC roles. I love reading about "Old Hollywood", where the 'Stars' TRULY acted like stars & NOT a bunch of drug-crazed sex addicts. Actually, they may have been that, but what went on behind closed doors, stayed behind them. For me, those were real Stars, they dressed, looked, acted & spoke like "real" Stars, or what was perceived to have been "real' stars in those days. I just love reading about them. Thelma Todd met a bad end, as did many other "Stars". Sorry, I get carried away !!

That said, "The Women" was very near the end of Norma Shearer's career, and was director George Cuckor's consolation prize to the ladies who didn't get the Scarlett O'Hara part in "Gone With the Wind." Cuckor was set to direct it and was taken off, but that's another story. Shearer was an enormous star, and it didn't hurt that, as Joan Crawford would tell anyone within earshot, "She married the boss," or worse, "I didn't get where I am on my ass." (That's our Joanie!) Irving Thalberg was more than a producer; he was MGM's head of production, overseeing everything, even on his deathbed. He was enormously powerful as Louis B. Mayer was, but unlike Mayer, very much respected for his artistry. I, too, love reading about the old Hollywood that hasn't existed for years. It's mostly tattooed and pierced no-class and no-talents now.

There was an uproar because Davis was denied a nomination. Who started it, I never found out. But I have found that someone with an agenda usually initiates these things. Same thing happened with the nominated James Stewart, (for "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington", in 1939. He lost to the very deserving star of "Goodbye, Mr. Chips". If that wasn't enough drama, Clark Gable was the frontrunner, for "Gone with the Wind". So, the next year Stewart won for the forgettable part in "The Philadelphia Story", over his good friend, Henry Fonda, who was nominated for "Grapes of Wrath", whose "Tom Joad" is still quoted to this day. Speaking of friends, Rosalind Russell, lost to her good friend, Loretta Young, when Miss Young was polled as coming in 5th among the Best Actress nominees. After some early success under contract, she was perceived as being "box office poison" and risked drifting off into oblivion as the studio she was under contract to sidelined her completely. In an unprecedented act of guts and confidence, she took money out of the bank and bought out her own contract. She then went out and purchased the rights to "Philadelphia Story" and won the starring role because she owned the rights. This had never been done in Hollywood, and probably the only time the contract driven studio system was out maneuvered by an actor or actress. There is one thing that stands out so far above any other actress in the business that you can't find any one to compare her to, and that is the talent and ability and pure character to play toe to toe with the biggest male stars as an equal partner in a production. From all the films she did with Spencer Tracey, Humphrey Bogart, John Wayne, Henry Fonda, Lawrence Olivier. And nobody seems to remember perhaps her most remarkable performance in Eugene Oneill's Long Days Journey Into Night with Ralph Richardson. She did a lot of legitimate theater, Shakespeare and even Greek Tragedy in Greece throughout her career; and a host of artistic pictures that people never see or hear about because they were not big box office Hollywood Movies. She took big risks, which is highly unusual for a Hollywood Actress. She wanted to try and expand her range as much as possible and do the most creative things possible. The range of characters is unique. The range of projects is unique. She even won three Emmy nominations for her television film work. True she never tried to change her voice, but anybody that says she just always played herself knows nothing about acting. About her personal demeanor and social attitudes, she had a unique upbringing. Her parents were wealthy New Englanders. Hollywood tried to retire her and break her many times, but she always found a way to persevere. By the way, if any of the viewers here have not seen Long Day's Journey Into Night, you are missing some greatness; great writing, and a great production of basically the original play directed by Sidney Lumet and with Jason Robards. And I do not know who else could have played this part at that time in this production. It is based on Eugene Oneill's own family history, intertwined with his mother's incurable morphine addiction.
This woman remained a tremendous stage presence until the day she left us... and after.

Strong, fascinating, down to earth, talented,
humble. She never try to sugar coat her life or personnality. Honest and direct, she was not superficial and ego inflated like many other stars. She never care about prices and oscar, only to give a good performance in great movies.
Hepburn was an original from head to toe. She lived by her own rules...and gave memorable performances over and over. Her later work seemed to get even better. The African Queen is such a great movie...no two could have done it better. Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, another masterpiece, as well as Rooster Cogburn. On Golden Pond, with Henry Fonda, was SO GENUINE AND BELIEVABLE, you could almost believe they were real people. Her comedy chops were so easy for her. I wish I had seen her on stage...same for Helen Hayes.

Oh my goodness. Another gem on YT. I saw some of the original awards show. Of course that was circa 1974; I was about 8 at the time. My mother (the real movie buff) was visibly moved by the entrance of the great Kate, already about 66 or so at the time of this appearance. She turned to me and said, "that's a star, but look how down-to-earth." She made mention of the simple pants suit, sandals, nothing fancy, just Kate doing it- and with a glint in the eye to boot. Thank you so much for this.

Hepburn was a very complex person apparently but she seems to have made a choice in her very rich life: simplicity.

Usually actresses in those days didn't last more than 10 years on the top.
She did it for almost 50 years.
Some others ( like the beautiful I. Bergman) did a marvellous work too.
But did anyone noticed how much women are criticized when they have this kind of talent and creativity?
