  • The Cupra Leon is the high-performance version of Seat's hugely popular small hatchback. It has a more powerful engine and more equipment than the standard car and makes a good alternative to the Ford Focus ST and Honda Civic Type R.
There’s no mistaking the Leon Cupra from the outside, with its attractive alloy wheels and chunky body kit. Inside, it feels properly premium when compared to some of the alternatives in this price bracket.
In terms of space, the Cupra Leon is identical to the standard car. That means plenty of space in the front and back and a 380 litre boot space, which is more than in the Ford Focus ST.
Under the bonnet, the Leon Cupra is essentially a Golf GTI and gets the same 2.0-litre engine, but with quite a bit more power. In fact, it makes the Cupra Leon one of the most powerful cars in its class, proving responsive and pulling strongly from low speeds. It’s enough to result in a very impressive 0-62mph time of just 5.6 seconds. Theres a choice between a good manual gearbox and a fantastic DSG automatic gearbox. The auto can never match the level of engagement and control that the cheaper manual offers, but it does make the Leon Cupra faster and more fuel-efficient.
Overall, then, the Leon Cupra gets close to being the ideal package. Its highly practical, extremely comfortable and has a cracking engine which means it accelerates faster than most of its rivals. Its a credible track day car yet wouldn’t look out of place in the supermarket car park.
Prices start from around £31k for the entry level, rising to just over £40k for the most luxurious and powerful version. The estate adds around £1.5k to the entry-level and around £3.5k for the most powerful four-wheel drive option.
