Hi everyone. Welcome back for Part 2 in the How to Colour your quilt series. Spring is in the air and what better way to welcome it than playing with colour. Please check the NOTES on the video for all the links.
Just Get it Done Quilts Thanks for this! I also just watched your balance video about stash control. I wonder if you've any tips on how to shop from your own stash for backings. I abhor searching for the perfect backing only to find that the sale options are not what I am looking for. I tend to shop sales only. Do you have tips on easy ways to scrap together backings from your own stash that don't require a ton of work? I am a confident beginner. Love love love your videos!!
This is equivalent to a college-level color course. Even though, as an elementary ed graduate (many, many years ago, and having taught both art and color), having taken all the prerequisite art and Art Appreciation coursework before "Art for Elementary Teachers," I thought I had color down! No! Not even close. So, I'm going to treat this three-part series like a college-level class, do the homework, take notes, review, and review. This is "free" on TH-cam!? Amazing. Thank you.
I just barely discovered your videos this morning about 5 hours ago. I've been watching practically nonstop!! Although I'm not a quilter, I am a cosplayer and as such, am somewhat of a designer. I'm also an artist of traditional mediums like watercolour, pastels, colored pencils, markers, and greyscale sketch art. Ergo I very much LOVE and appreciate your videos so much!! I've learned bits and pieces (and practiced) colour theory most of my creative life....yet no instructor nor text managed to break it down in ways that I could correlate the same things verbally, (con)textwise, and aurally. You quilt, perceive, and educate in an analogous format to how Alton Brown cooks and the way Ann Reardon bakes and makes confectionary. It makes my brain EXTREMELY happy to further fill in the gaps and listen to you so readily expound upon concepts I wasn't even aware of that I'd been missing until today!! I've had such a blindingly wonderful AHA!! moment, where my analytical scientific side and my abstract creative sides are getting along quite swimmingly. I envision these two halves as a curmudgeonly old cat (like Garfield) trying to stop falling in love with the happy sprightly kittenish Nermal yet failing spectacularly. xD
i'm a new quilter but not new to sewing. ill have to listen to this several times and believe it will sink in. thank you for the learning. im a subscriber and i dont understand why anyone wouldnt be already as they enjoy your time and energy. thank you very much.
I just want to thank you for the free color class and the downloads! This was a problem I was having and didn’t realize it excellent tutorial. Thank you so much just get it done quilts watching and learning.😊
As someone who'd never known until watching these videos just how much of extended color theory I'd been missing.... the simplified and easy-to-grasp way she's explained it all here makes me feel simutaneously ecstatic, relieved, and exasperated that my base knowledge was so swiss-cheesed! Now it's not and I'm so thrilled! This can extend to virtually every medium on the visual spectrum..... paper, fabric, ink, powders, paints, leads, glass, metals.....WHEEEEE. It's like the difference between using the first prescription of eyeglasses I got 30 years ago vs the ones I have now.....the clarity is like night and day and I couldn't be happier!
After watching this series (all three), and, in particular, this one-- I finally selected (knew how to verbalize to the ladies down at our local fabric store), the two muted colors I was looking for the quilt I want to make. Thank you so much!
wow. im in my 60s and had never heard colors described and broken down like this! i bought a color wheel a long time ago and have never used it! now i will use it all the time. thank you karen! love your videos! so educational and presented in easy to understand format!
I am the worse at color coordinating. Seriously. I just picked up some fabric and a friend who is a designer complimented me about the choices I made and how well the will look together. I am soooooo happy. Will send you a picture of the finished quilt. Thanks
This information is excellent. I used to teach chemistry and physics and, when I was a new teacher, I was a substitute teacher in an art class tasked with teaching colour theory. I was great fun for me calling on all of my science background, but I’m sure the students thought I was crazy. Years ago, my husband bought me a class in colour theory with Kaffe Fassett and Kaffe’s first quilting book. Two of my friends also bought seats in the class, to great expense on their part. We were so excited about taking the class, I already knew about Kaffe from his history knitting. The class was, to be kind, unfortunate. Everyone was required to bring squares of multiple fabrics of various sizes. I thought that maybe we would mix and match fabrics to experiment with the different possible combinations. Instead, we were asked to lay out a quilt with our own fabrics, which was not helpful. When asked about how to combine colours, the response was “this is something that you either know or you don’t, it can’t be taught”. After we displayed our potential quilt tops, he walk around inspecting them like a general with his troops. My best friend had laid out a beautiful little quilt top full of roses. I could imagine it laid out under a shade tree by the stream while people in white outfits sat around it sipping tea and eating cakes. It was absolutely lovely. When Kaffe come to this quilt top he announced rather snidely “who’s responsible for this pink soufflé?!?” He was disgusted with it and let everyone know. He said it needed mustard yellow to make it right. For the rest of the class, Shirley sat next to me, hiding from everyone. She was mortified and so upset. I have to admit I’ve never bought any of his fabrics or books since then.
Thank you so very much for explaining color harmony by showing us quilts as an example. I found it very helpful seeing the colors as you were explaining them. I will come back often to watch this video.
Thank you for the videos. I never knew there was so much to learning colors. This will definitely help me choose fabrics, when I finally take the plunge and attempt a quilt.
Cracking series on colour 👍 best i have seen.. Thanks for taking the trouble to explain it so well and show visual explanations/ examples. I adore colour and always have trouble making fabric choices as I want them all. This should help me have more of a ‘plan’ when shopping for fabrics. Caroline, uk
Thank you, Karen. I had fabric stacked up, trying to decide what to use when your first one came out. Since I had to wait for #2 I decided to straighten my fabrics ;) and wait. Good thing all around, am eager to play now! This is the hardest part of quilting for me.
Just be patient with yourself. Practice will make you better at it. And with some people, myself included, we can go down a rabbit hole looking for perfection. Sometimes you just need a time limit.
Thank you so Much... I am super excited i am a new quilter and I had trouble flowing my colors. My mother and sister are sew but mostly clothing and I could not explain the color flow. I was watching your channel and i said here my problem solved. Then I see it is a whole world colors to learn about. Super excited thanks again.
These videos are amazing I've learnt so much. I usually buy fabric packs because I'm so bad at figuring out matching fabrics but now I understand it better I feel more comfortable. Thank you
What an outstanding concise presentation of color theory...Now I just need to watch it over and over until I learn it all. Thank you Karen! Would love to also see explanation of print combination guidelines (large print, small print, mixing floral with other patterned fabrics, including background neutrals in combinations for best effect).
This series is so insightful. I normally just pick a fabric with multiple colors and match to it. This knowledge will open up so many possibilities. Thank you!
Thank you so much for your informative, easy to understand explanation of colours from over the pond in Derbyshire, UK. I've just discovered your channel, I've been mulling over buying a colour wheel for a while and now I know which one, you are a very inspiring teacher, thank you 😀
Wow! I have to say your you tube channel is the most helpful channel I've ever subscribed to. Thank you for taking the time to make and share all these videos and tutorials. There is hope for all my unmatched and unused fabrics.
Karen, I love your videos and appreciate how thorough and precise they are. I know I am going to learn when I watch your videos. You make it fun. Thank you for your wealth of knowledge you so generously share with the world. Until next time.
I just found your channel and these colour theory videos are spot on. Thanks so much. I have not found many quilters dive into this. I started to learn colour theory in university but to apply the same to quilting...wonderful.
Karen, I’m new to your channel and loving it and just had to let you know how much I appreciate these color theory videos! I will be using your wisdom in all of my crafting color choices 😊 You’re a wonderful teacher and your videos are so beautiful, as a mom of tiny humans they scratch my crafting itch when I don’t have time to get my hands into yarn or fabric
I never knew there were all those combos! I only played with complimentary and tertiary and triadic. Thanks! cant wait to try some if these and use MORE stash!
An excellent series. Thank you so much for your hard work on research and most of all, figuring out how to present this in such a clear, understandable way.
Wonderful! Even though I have been slogging my way through colour books for the past year, this is the clearest information I have seen presented in a way that is informative and with easy ways to understand! Priceless information!
Wow! Inspiring video. I wasn’t sure about yellow-orange-green together, but you put the fabrics together and it looked like citrus! I’m going to have fun playing with my colour wheel and fabric stash. Thanks for sharing!
My brain is buzzing, my memory is struggling😂, but I am SO pleased to learn this. I will hunt out my colour wheel and download your documents, thank you Karen! A great tool for my toolbox x
You're the best! I wish I could just follow you around and have your wisdom drop all over me. I really appreciate you and the time you take to make such great videos, thank you 😊
Just WOW! I will view these over and over. starting my first easy small quilt but think I will go will pre-cuts for this one. My brain is scrambled now, but I know I will get it in time :) Forgot to say thank you so much!
Thank you so very much for this series. From my very first quilt, which I still have, made in 1986 I have struggled with colour harmony. I tend to get around it by using precuts from one line, but would love to spread my wings.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! Your explanations are clear and very understandable. I’m a little late in life starting to sew and following along with you has been very helpful.
Great work on explaining colour theory! I love the way you illustrated it with the quilts, theory into practise. Now I just need to find those quilt patterns you said I'll find below. Time to kick out the pendulum that swings between depression and procrastination and attack the fabric stash and find my quilting mojo again. Thanks for the inspiration.😉
Thank you very much for the time, effort, and passion you dedicate to these videos, they are some of the most informative and enjoyable I’ve found! The color wheel handout is JUST WHAT I NEED as I’ve been struggling to master color theory and this while be a great too; since I am such a visual learner! Thanks again, ‘looking forward to more, more, more!
I have just started to quilt. My first quilt was a monochrome. It went fine. But the second one was a disaster 😢. After seeing ur 2 vdos, I know what exactly went wrong.. Yes... The choice of colours. Thank you very much for the enlightenment. 👌👌
Loved your color theory series! You are a great teacher! Im new to quilting and color theory, but just love color. My question is : can you mix different shades and tints if the are complimentary? Meaning a dark blue with a pale yellow and a red in the triadic section? Thanks

After decades of art classes, I've finally found someone who explained colours in a way that I could understand! Thank you so much, Karen.
Thank you for watching. I appreciate the feed back
wow as a retired high school art teacher I LOVE how you are making color theory accessible to quilters!!!!
Its funny how most of us know this but really dont know how to apply it. Thanks for you comments. It keeps me going

I just found your channel and these colour theory videos are spot on. Thanks so much. I have not found many quilters dive into this. I started to learn colour theory in university but to apply the same to quilting...wonderful.
Colour theory books and lectures seem to be more about painting where there are infinite choices. Much harder to do with patterned fabrics

Very cool video. Thank you for posting this.

Thank You .
thank you for watching
Hello, I'm a beginner. At minute 3:32 in the tutorial, you say Triadic uses the colors at 12, 3 and 8 o'clock, but the video shows 4 o'clock. Can you please clarify which it is for me? Thank you so much. I love your tutorials!
Thank you!
Karen, Kudos on the videos, especially the first one. I've heard many references to other color wheels, but they were either glossed over entirely or explained so poorly that I didn't get anything from them. I now understand at least two of them. Oh, and oops! Your web page name in the video at the end is missing an 'S'.
[sigh]...my proofing skills are poor at 2:00am. Thank you for letting me know. I’ll put a note on the video.
Do you have the name of the pattern for the 1st quilt? It’s beautiful! Great videos too. Thank you!
Love, love, love!!
I have used for years a great online site for graphic designers i will post the link as soon as i find it
❤
Do you consider blue, green, and yellow combination of an analogous color combination even though there are colors between them? If not, what is name is given to the combination of 2 primary colors + their secondary color?
Broad analogous
Thank you
👍
