Thank you, thank you! I've been sewing and quilting for almost fifty years and learned something new watching this video. I'm pretty good at putting colors together but couldn't figure out why some combos looked better than others. The grey scale is what did the trick! How could I not have learned this before. I got my phone and looked at the blocks of my current quilt and seeing it in grey scale showed me immediately which blocks were wrong and why! OH MY GOODNESS! Can't say thank you enough.
I just want to sew something pretty. Now you have stuff on needles??? ohmyword!! I had no idea quilting was going to be so hard. Can't I just find fabric prints/solids that go good together and quilt them up?. I mean, for those that have sponges for brains these vlogs are a timeless treasure but for those of us that have no holes in our brains for this stuff to sink through is like trying to learn another language completely. I still love watching them and I think I finally got that taking a black and white picture thing. Love all your hacks. Very helpful. I use them. They're great!!

I just got into quilting and I have been so overwhelmed that I was thinking of giving up and then I went on TH-cam just to learn how to cut straight and found you. Oh my gosh~~I'm so glad I found you! 55 years old and just completed my first simple quilt. I have all my mom's tools and just didn't think I had quilting in me. It is so intimidating. I also have my first quilt my mom made me which I insisted on all blues in light and dark in a "Log Cabin" style She tried her best to steer me away. It never really worked (and now I know why) although I loved the colors at the time. I also have a few unfinished quilt tops from great grandma's and aunts that I have carried along with me. Can't wait to learn and grow and finish them!!

I’m learning about Half square triangles and get my seams accurate. So now I will put that color wheel on my list and use your practice exercises. Thank you!

Just what I've been waiting for! A few people are lucky enough to be able to put together a color scheme without knowing any theory. Theory can be boring and complicated. Hi Karen, your videos on color are the best I've ever seen. For some reason my brain has a hard time retaining the details of hue, value, etc. so I'm watching them more than once. These exercises will help a lot and might even get me out of that color/pattern comfort zone you talked about. In February I went to the fabric store with a friend who was choosing fabrics for a quilt for her son. The ladies in the store helped her pick 4 fabrics that I would have NEVER put together and her quilt is looking great. Here's hoping I can learn to do that! Hugs & prayers to you and your family!

A great and informative video! I am a home ec major, have been sewing for almost 70 years (I started at a very early age :-) ) and have taught quilting since 1973. Still learned a lot and need to watch it again. Thanks!

I don't know how I've found you but your clear explanations have built up my courage to possibly start quilting. I particularly love the idea of playing with fabric just for fun and learning.
Thank you for simplifying the mysteries of color and fabric. You make taking those baby steps into color much less scary-almost like the training wheels on my first bike!
Oh my gosh I didnt know the terminology for what I was already doing. I naturally see the harder to see colors, so when I pick colors I tend to find colors specifically to make them pop. I am new to sewing, and you have been such an amazing teacher!! TY and many blessings. #quiltthroughcovid
I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!! I have to tell you how I found you. I was actually looking for information on learning calligraphy to improve my writing on cakes. Far from fabric hah? That was at 7am this morning. Somewhere in there I saw your dollar store sewing video so being a crafter, sewer and quilter as well, besides my cakes, I had to watch. Well here I am, now at almost 11am, and the only thing I have watched are YOUR videos. There are so many wonderful videos that you have that I just can't seem to stop. The coffee pot is empty, I have made at least 3 different lists and as soon as I can tear myself away, I am going to go get started on redoing and fixing my sewing room. Believe me, it is a mess. All I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you, for all the time you have taken to make these videos and sharing them.
Karen! I'm so thrilled! I bought this exact colour wheel after Christmas and wasn't quite sure how to use it. This is brilliant! Thankyou so much! I've learned so much from you - just finished using up all the scraps of a quilt top in the back; I now have a proper ironing technique and I sew with a ledge (and shared this with a new sewist recently!). You are a true gem. Thankyou for taking the time to make this video during what is a very demanding time for you. Sending much love to you & your family.
Hi Karen, sending you a hello from Virginia. I am making a king size quilt as you go for my son and daughter-in-law. So as I sewed, I also used smaller pieces to make a quilt for me. So I tried using your color theory. I took black and white photos. What I found was astonishing. There were pieces that fell in a completely different place than I would have placed it. I'm still very far from being good at this color placement, but I'm learning. Stay safe.
Debbie Rapp I too am making a king sized quilt for my son and “future” DIL! I, unfortunately, put it together before knowing all of this and did it by eye. Will have to take a black and white picture after I am done and see what it looks like !
Thank you for this video. I'm not too bad with the color wheel, but still need to work on it. Many years ago, my infant son had a onsie that was a red and yellow check. I used to put his red socks on with that because red goes with red, right? Then we had his pictures taken and when we got them back, I was so disappointed, as well as embarrassed. He looked like he was wearing an orange onsie with red socks and oh boy did they clash! That taught me to look at colors better. 😀 I wasn't a quilter then, but I never forgot that lesson. Thank you for the free trial at Skillshare. I signed up. Hope you have a wonderful day.
Oh so happy to see you back. You sound energized. This was a great video and i really appreciate that you took the time to do itgiven everything you are dealing with. Hugs to you and your son.
This was an eye opener on color ! Love all your classes I agree with Meyrick Peterson you are a wonderful teacher ! You are truly gifted. My prayers continue for your family ! God Bless Y'all !
Karen, I took a workshop on color. I left more confused than I started. Then I found your tutorials. I am now understanding and this last tutorial was more than helpful than I have words for. Thank you. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge with us all. Take care
You’re the best!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge freely. I’ve been binge watching while healing up from knee surgery. Sitting in my sewing room and playing with colors has made my days much more enjoyable
Video played fine for me. I just wanted to say that I enjoy these types of lessons about color theory because I struggle with picking fabrics. I find myself wanting to choose matchy-matchy fabrics which does not allow for enough contrast. I thoroughly enjoy piecing the blocks but I know when my project is done that I could have made better fabric choices. BTW, your hair looks very cute today! Thanks!
Thank you very much! There is a ton of good information here. You have made me realize that I do not use the colour wheel nearly enough. Stay safe, Karen.
It is always a happy morning when I see you have posted a new video. I want to thank you for revisiting the use of templates to look at the pattern in different size squares. I hadn't remembered that tip from your template post. I also want to thank you for the free 2 months of Skillshare. It couldn't have come at a better time - although honestly I have no trouble filling my time.
Bought the 3in 1 color wheel. Was so impressed with your video. By the way I watch all of them. You are so smart and I love how you present your info. Thanks for your hard work. You rock!
Your color lessons have taught me a skill that I thought was just a natural talent; you can do it naturally, or you just can’t. I’m still a newb but starting to figure it out. That color wheel looks valuable, I’m on it!
Be easy on yourself. Colour has three dimensions. And then you have the quilt design and fabric pattern for a total of at least 5. That's a lot to stuff into your brain.
What a wonderful surprise this morning! This was fascinating and covers an area that I am almost clueless about. Thanks for sharing all of this information is such a palatable way.
Thank you. You certainly showed me things I'd never thought of. Can't wait to sort my fabric and take a picture:) So happy to see you are look much better today. Pray that means your son is doing well.
Hi Karen, I hope you and your family are well. My thoughts are with you. Thank you so much for this. I like the "exercise" bit. I am becoming more aware of how I do things and practice on what I have got. With your teaching I am taking my quilting to a whole different level! Thank you! x
This is a very good lesson. I have a color wheel but haven’t used it much because I found it confusing. This is the only video I’ve seen that really explains it in a way that I can apply. Thank you so much.
Thank you! This video is so helpful, I plan on watching it over a few times. I’m new to quilting but not to sewing and have always loved fabric. I was just saying to my daughter it sure looks like I’m buying all the same colors of fabric, you can see my favorite colors. I love your videos, they are so helpful for a newbie quilter like me.😃
Working on my third quilt ever right now and trying to pull from my stash as much as possible. This video and the color series has helped a ton in the process. Thank you!!
Thanks Karen. I love playing with colour. Today I pulled out my precious batik collection, washed it and am now ironing it all. Such beautiful colours and designs.
I'm glad that things are going better I love your video as usual you always have very interesting topics an interesting ways of presenting them I hope your son and your family are doing well.
I was first introduced to the color wheel in cosmetology school (hair & nail colors). It blew my mind, but made so much sense. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Good morning Karen! I have been praying for you and your son and family! You all were in my thoughts and prayers this morning! So glad to find a video from you. However when you get to the purple and green tulip fabric something goes wrong with the video. My phone has just freaked out and shut down twice. I thought it was me! But appears others r having trouble too! I really struggle with color and fear of using my fabrics in ways that I won’t end up liking and then worry that I’ll have “wasted” them. I really need videos like this thank u for everything!!
You are a wealth of information. I love this stuff. I thought I was pretty good at making those choices, but I see how you discovered the underlying hue, so I'm going to get one of those more involved color wheels. It makes choosing fabrics so much easier. Interesting about the classes at home. I like being along-ish, but learning something new is always a rush. Thanks for posting.
I really enjoyed this video! I decided to do the 100 day project this year and wanted to keep it simple, so I just decided to do 100 fabric mixes. It has been so fun to just play with fabrics and pull them together without the pressure of ‘this has to be amazing and end up in a quilt’.
Very interesting! I was really surprised when you showed fabric that we thought was one colour and it turned out to be another colour, and how it played so well with other fabrics from the same colour group. Great video!
Hi Karen, I've just ordered the colour tool you recommend, thank you! I've learned so much from you, I really value your videos. That being said, I hope you can take some time for yourself at this time and not feel pressure to please your followers, I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that you and your family are the priority here. Sending you love and very best wishes from Devon, England xx
Thanks for these great tips on colour value, Karen! I've been a fabric acquisitionist since 2012, but have only finished making 2 quilts (plus four quilt tops). Now that everyone I know needs a fabric mask to go out (and none of them can sew), I have been getting brave about cutting into some of my precious stash to make them. I had bought a bunch of fabric from an estate sale, and she had a variety of types of 'quilting' fabrics. So I am using those that are thicker/different than the majority of the fabrics in my stash to make the masks. But I now see what you mean about different weights and shrink rates and weave making the fabric crooked...Not all "quilting cottons" are created equal ! And now that I'm braver about cutting into it all, I have high hopes that I'll be making more quilt projects. Your colour tips are going to be oh so helpful in that regard. I am very glad to see you back and looking well and very enthusiastic. I am praying for your son, that he (and you) gets through this challenging marathon that is "treatment" with the minimum of pain and suffering. ~Diana K., Hamilton ON
Love this Karen and it is very good to see you! A quilt judge recently reminded about using appropriate pattern scale for a quilt depending on the piece size! Free advice, we were just working together in the same room. Always learning!!!!! Take care!
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and making it fun in the process! Your ironing video has made a huge difference in my piecing. And I definitely want to make that ironing cart. So smart. This color theory information is wonderful and I've requested the color tool as a Mother's Day gift. Thinking of your son and family, sending positive thoughts and prayers and hoping all is well.
So I am using this time to work through my stash and UFO's. Finally just created a few BJ pages - love it, thanks for the advice (previous video). Today I took a wild mix of batiks and worked through the exercise of sorting them by value. Fun! Really enjoy your videos. Stay healthy and sane!!!
Another wonderful teaching video to get my juices flowing. I love color but always find it a challenge to choose fabrics for a quilt. Your videos help me look and think about things in new ways. Thank you! I'm adding my 2 cents on a comment from another viewer about moving too quickly between examples. I would appreciate you keeping an example on the screen for 5 seconds or so. Sometimes I hear what you are explaining but my eye needs more time to see what you are talking about. I try pausing the video but then the picture is grayed out and any contrast is lost. I think this is what Judi was trying to say. Our eyes need a little more time for new concepts to connect with our brain. I hope this is helpful and doesnt come across as critical. Thanks, Karen.
I love the color tool you shared in this video. I first encountered it in a fair isle knitting retreat with Janine Bajus. It's a great tool to have on hand for quilters, Knitters, crocheters, etc.
Hi Karen, this is so interesting. We think we know color until we start looking into it and then realize how much there is to learn. Thanks for your color, or colour, videos :)
Good to see you again my friend! It’s always great to find a new vid from you. I love your approach to teaching the concepts of color theory. My parents started sending me to art classes when I was about 10 years old, so I’ve been lucky to have a solid background in color. It’s never too much to review it again and gain new perspective. I never give selecting color much thought for my quilts, but I do have a bit of trouble with scale as I’ve been stuck on Kaffe Fassett fabrics for years, but I’m figuring it out quilt by quilt. Thank you for the investment of your time and energy you invest in your well thought out and illustrated videos. I look forward to your next.
I have found that there is always another way to look at colour. They are so many aspects to it. And I’m not sure people realize how influential colour is in our lives. Here’s to life long learning ✋
Thank you, Karen, for all the valuable info on color! I'm going to work with those exercises to get better at planning project colors. I learn so much from you! Keeping positive thoughts for you and your family.
Karen, Thank you for sharing this great advice. I am hoping this will help me actually pull together a group of unrelated fabric for a simple quilt. I am going to my phone to see how to change it to B&W photos and I am searching for my color wheel. I know i have heard this before but since i am in the process of reorganizing my gigantic fabric stash I think this will be a great place to start. I can easily switch those I have already sorted according to value. Stay healthy- we need you.
Thank you so much. In glad to know that with practice I can get better at utilizing color contrast and harmony to my quilts. I have used the black and white images before to look for balance but have not tried arranging a premixed group by tone.
Your suggestion to take a black and white photo is ingenious. I never would have thought of doing that.
I am a color pro, and having practiced for 40 years i am now retired. You did an awesome job of explaining things and you were spot on. Well done.

Thanks for watching. I love cake decorating too
💕💕💕
I am not a quilter but love your videos. I have learned a lot, thank you so much!
Love from Muscat💖
So far away....thanks for watching
We are always learning. Colour, Value, Harmony and Pattern....there are a lot of shifting values
Love, love, love when Karen teaches about color! Always learn something new. Thank you
So glad!
Thanks for sharing.
Oh so happy to see you back. You sound energized. This was a great video and i really appreciate that you took the time to do itgiven everything you are dealing with. Hugs to you and your son.
Thank you. Yesterday I started to feel like my old self.
This was an eye opener on color ! Love all your classes I agree with Meyrick Peterson you are a wonderful teacher ! You are truly gifted. My prayers continue for your family ! God Bless Y'all !
Thank you
Karen, I took a workshop on color.
THIS video needs to be added to your COLOR playlist ...once again it is great
Thank you for reminding me...my brain is so foggy it's like I've never made a video before
Video played fine for me. Thanks!
Thank you....I think my hair has reverted to it's former style. 😊
Cindy McFarland This is me too. I tend to love high saturation mid tones and then it just doesnt have enough contrast. Working on this!
Good morning Karen! Thank you again for a wonderful video on colour, scale, etc. Prayers to you and your family. Virtual hugs.
Thank you
What a lovely episode. I will definitely try these exercises. Thank you.
Thank you very much! There is a ton of good information here. You have made me realize that I do not use the colour wheel nearly enough. Stay safe, Karen.
Glad it was helpful!
You are so welcome!
Very interesting and helpful. Hope all is well with you and your family. Good to see you again!
Thank you!
I’m so happy I came across your channel! Soooo much information delivered so well!
What a wonderful surprise this morning! This was fascinating and covers an area that I am almost clueless about. Thanks for sharing all of this information is such a palatable way.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you. You certainly showed me things I'd never thought of. Can't wait to sort my fabric and take a picture:) So happy to see you are look much better today. Pray that means your son is doing well.
He is finally feeling a bit better
Hi Karen, I hope you and your family are well. My thoughts are with you. Thank you so much for this. I like the "exercise" bit. I am becoming more aware of how I do things and practice on what I have got. With your teaching I am taking my quilting to a whole different level! Thank you! x
This is the exact content that I have been looking for. You are amazing and I love you. Thank you!
Always said : Fabric Speaks to me !!!♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
This is a very good lesson. I have a color wheel but haven’t used it much because I found it confusing. This is the only video I’ve seen that really explains it in a way that I can apply. Thank you so much.
I’m new to quilting so this was very helpful to me. Thank you.
Thank you! I so look forward to seeing your videos. Sending healing thoughts and prayers to your family.
❤️
You do great on Visio and love your teaching. Thankyou
Good to see you again. I can apply this lesson to lots of things, thanks for sharing. Stay well all.
Thanks for watching!
Love the education of Sewing. I will use some of this tips in my Sewing. Thank you Karen
Thank you! This video is so helpful, I plan on watching it over a few times. I’m new to quilting but not to sewing and have always loved fabric. I was just saying to my daughter it sure looks like I’m buying all the same colors of fabric, you can see my favorite colors. I love your videos, they are so helpful for a newbie quilter like me.😃
Glad it was helpful! I also came from a sewing background and was quite surprised at the challenge of combining quilting fabrics.
Thank you
Your videos are amazing! Full of useful information given in the simplest way possible! Thank you!
You are so knowledgeable and such a good teacher. Love your videos! Stay well.
Thank you! You too!
I was first introduced to the color wheel in cosmetology school (hair & nail colors). It blew my mind, but made so much sense. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
I was just saying that there are always new ways to look at colour. I would interested to hear how you apply what you have learned to quilting
Thank you, Karen! I so enjoy learning about color! Warmest wishes to you and family.
It's a TH-cam issue. Hopefully they will fix it soon. Someone mentioned that they can scrub beyond it.
I love your mug at 13:16...the multi polka dot is so happy!
You are an absolutely fantastic teacher!
Thank you! 😃
I really enjoyed this video! I decided to do the 100 day project this year and wanted to keep it simple, so I just decided to do 100 fabric mixes. It has been so fun to just play with fabrics and pull them together without the pressure of ‘this has to be amazing and end up in a quilt’.
I have the 3 in 1 colour tool and use it a lot. It is well worth getting.
👍
Very interesting! I was really surprised when you showed fabric that we thought was one colour and it turned out to be another colour, and how it played so well with other fabrics from the same colour group. Great video!
Thank you! 😊
~Diana K., Hamilton ON
Thank you
I need SkillShare. I love water color. I like the batik fabrics too. Total quilting Newb here! 🙋♀️
So valuable. Taking the black and white photo was a great idea.
Best wishes to everyone at your place. Better days ahead.
Love this Karen and it is very good to see you! A quilt judge recently reminded about using appropriate pattern scale for a quilt depending on the piece size! Free advice, we were just working together in the same room. Always learning!!!!! Take care!
Thanks for sharing.
Brilliant videos, Karen! Thank you .
Wow! Great exercises! Like some of the others have said, I’m not a natural when it comes to colour. Your videos have been so helpful.
Video is sooooo helpful, I am learning tons with these Videos
Thank you so much for this video. It really makes the treacherous job of putting together a coordinating pack much easier. I love all your videos.
Karen love your videos I can’t wait to find that Color Tool.
You look beautiful and refreshed ... and this is a great video. Keep making you and your family a priority! 💞
Hi Karen, this is so interesting. We think we know color until we start looking into it and then realize how much there is to learn. Thanks for your color, or colour, videos :)
Love your videos You would be a wonderful instructor. I learned
a lot of good hints, things I never paid much attention to before. Thank You
Good to see you again my friend!
Wonderful!
Thank you 😊
Thank you so much. In glad to know that with practice I can get better at utilizing color contrast and harmony to my quilts. I have used the black and white images before to look for balance but have not tried arranging a premixed group by tone.
