These are great cars and very fun to drive. My son bought a used '94 SL At 116K miles, crank sensor went out which is a lot of work to replace it. While I was at it, I went ahead and changed the oil pump, water pump, timing belt and tensioner along with the crank sensor. If you can do the work yourself and you stay on top of the maintenance then you will really enjoy these cars. This car is fast enough as it has smooth power through all five gears and the cornering is amazing! I simply love this car!! Great video!!
MotoP thanks, previous owner had the car for 16 years, it’s basic bolt ons such as a catback exhaust system filters and boost controller. 13G turbos came with the U.K. spec, 410bhp @14psi. 15psi is max for the turbos with my current set up. It’s outpaced a few 600cc bikes. These 3000GT’s are monsters
Take care of the car and she will return the favor. Most people complaining of reliability issues have 3000GT's that have been to the moon and back, changed hands more than a Thailand hooker, and have been worked on by kids still going through puberty. I can only speak for the VR4 but I bought my 2 owner 95 with 70k miles. It's still running great 8 years and 20k later because I TAKE CARE OF IT! Any high performance machine needs a lot of maintenance and unfortunately people that by these cars for cheap don't realize that.
Had my base 25 years, just the usual maintenance, 111000 miles, just did struts, clutch, timing and serpentine belts. Good for another 25 years and still pretty when shined up. Fun to drive
Im a 1993 base DOHC owner and learned ALOT over the year. You see the DOHC dont have alot of room in the cylinder walls which causes friction against the rod bearings. Causing the engine to "blow". If that happens you spun a rod bearing with possible crank damage but the good news is parts are cheap. Just rebuild the gaskets seals engine bearings oil pumps water pumps timing belts rods with original piston and itll last forever. And obviously transmission maintenance.
I just bought a 1994 3000GT base that i had to tow home because a lifter lost prime, slung the rocker arm out and scarred the cam lobe. I spent about a month resourcing parts (specifically the cams) and finally got it put back together monday. According to every forum i saw, it wasnt supposed to start up. It started up like it was never an issue to begin with. It still has the norotious lifter tick but thats purely from the onther STOCK 25yr old lifters that had the 1mm hole vs the gen 3s which had the 3mm hole. Didnt drop a valve, no loss in compression, sat for atleast a few months with the valve cover off, and it didnt even hesitate to start. So idk where this unreliability crap came from, my guess is from terrible owners that blame the car for their screw ups, but its not true. The 3s was one of my dream cars and now i own one that i was told several times would never start without a complete rebuild, i esseintially slapped a new USED set of cams and a brand new lifter and it came right back to life. Needs a few more general upkeep items to get it back to good health but you gotta get a heartbeat before you can save a life and i got the heartbeat lol
I have the 1997 base model with the SOHC as well. I just did a compression test on all 6 cylinders and the results were impressive! All were between 165-175 PSI at 151K miles! Still plenty of life left in the motor. I'm planning on installing a turbo soon since it's not my daily driver.
Just saw your video. You are absolutely right- the Sohc models are quite reliable. The dohcs a little less so. Used to own a stealth ES myself. Alot of the flak comes from 'friends' of owners who had bad experiences and like any car some motors arw just temperamental. In regards to the VR4 model, alot of people forget these cars were nearly 40-50k new. And despite having depreciated as much as they have, their maintenance is still that of a 50k car. One wouldnt expect maintenance on a porsche 911 to be next to nill just because its value dropped. Same for any car of that caliber- and for its time the 3S was ahead of the curve.

@@wewatch7465 I'm not Tim, but I can vouch. The VR4 is great in the snow. I hate to actually use the car in the snow, as I don't want it getting covered in salt and such... but they're troopers in the inclement weather. They're like driving a fast but controllable tank that's glued to the road.
Reliability is down to the user. Look after it with good-quality parts, and it'll be good to you. If you'd like to upgrade it a little, see if you can plonk a 6G75 into it. One out of a non-MIVEC Eclipse. Or a DOHC version. Will get a LOT more boogie into it without the increase in complexity ;)
No its NOT heavy , a single over head cam and the DOHC are between 32-3300lbs , a Honda prelude is 3200lbs to put it in prospective , they FEEL heavy because Mits put a spring rate and shocks in the car that's better suited to a Lincoln Town car , plus the sway bars (especially the rear's) are a joke.. The DOHC 3kgt is actually quicker than a NA 300z and Supra (and better on gas) who both come in heavier than the FWD 3kgt. As for reliability ? I have had my 94 DOHC for 18 out of 24 years of its life , I drive it like a Porsche here and there and it has been ROCK SOLID , as good as the many Honda's I have had... and I'm a Honda lover. Besides the usual tires , brake pads , rotors , a clutch , T-belt/water pump and front lower ball joints , everything else is org ... Incredible IMO BTW: The commonly talked about spun main bearings are almost always a result of an idiot mechanic jacking up the car by the oil pan , crushing it , pinching off the oil pick up , If you are going to buy one , inspect the oil pan for signs of idiot abuse.
I weighed my 92 N/A Stealth R/T at 3100 (ish)lbs. It's a nimble car. Took an SRT Cherokee (not a new one) on the highway. Fun as hell and gets looks your way.

We need more ppl saying this!!! I have a turbo Stealth, 2 NA Stealths, and a 3000gt... They die because of lack of maintenance...mostly the timing belt, or ppl that really have no clue working on them!! But cmon, they are the equivalent of a $50k sports car, so do the maintenance lol!! And here's the best part nobody mentions: if you break/slip a timing belt, you csn replace the valves, and freshen the whole motor (rings, bearings, gaskets) for a few hundred dollars!!!!
I've had it for 12 years now and i would say it's very reliable, best thing to do is to fit some forged pistons , rods , metal head gasket and a scania truck intercooler ,keep the power around 480bhp and this engine will never break ,you can go 160 mph all day long.
haven't watched the video yet, but a year into my personal 224k mile SL revival, i'm gonna guess some key points are PCB, Idle controller, Thermostat, defrost vents, headgaskets, radiator, clutch master cylinder, vacuum hose for the brake booster, and ALL 24 valve stem seals under the DOHC. edit: all of that may have sounded like complaints, but when you own one of these you quickly learn the bond-building relationship of reviving and learning skills from a car that will truly leave you with a bigger smile everytime you drive it than any of your other cars
The people commenting on your videos are probably getting all of their shit from VR-4's. The VR-4 was a SHOWCASE of state-of-the-art tech. So many things that were not exactly proven before that car, so many things to go wrong. The base model has very few of those things at all. That's why it'll run forever. Despite that, I love my VR-4 and find it worth the work and expense.
I don’t want to be pessimistic, which I’m not. I love these cars. I owned a 99 base model and had so many problems. The trans went out, air idle control, alternator, everything seemed to be failing. I did an entire trans overhaul kit that didn’t fix the car and fixed the air idle control and EGR valve and still couldn’t get it to idle. It would drive but just couldn’t idle. I dropped probably 6k just trying to get it to run and couldn’t so I had to sell it
They get the rep because of their age and how people abuse them. Like 6k launches literally dumping the clutch over and over. Not maintaining it, like at all. It’s not hard to find out what issues they have. They’re really not that expensive to maintain other than changing the timing belt and water pump every 60k or every 8-10 years. I’ve owned a tt for 18 yrs and 2 tt’s for like 12 yrs. Their reliability has been as good as any other daily drivers I’ve had over the years, which has been a bunch. Plus I’m talking about 2 500hp cars, not even close to stock.
I’m 17 and started working. Found a deal near me for really low. Suspiciously low. I’ll look more into it. About 100k miles. Same make and model. I really do hope I’ll be able to buy the car

Nice video. The most important I mention to people is that 90 percent of the spun bearings out there are from dumbasses jacking the car up by the oil pan and crushing it in when doing the timing service, reducing oil flow at the pickup tube. They are finicky at times but such cool cars to drive and look at. Supra performance at one fifth the bloody price.
Thank you for this video. I'm rescuing a 94 this week from it's way to the junk jard because a misfire. Paid $200 for it. Noting else wrong except a broken clip for the sun roof and the misfire.

Every 3000gt is an absolute tank. Nothing hurts it. They will run for 200-300k miles without batting an eye. Who in the world says they are unreliable? -Detroit Go on autotrader, buy one for $6k, and thank me later.
93 vr4 here. got it at 103k blown transfer case. got a new one and had to replace coolant temp sensor in 6 years up to 132k. only issue is trans is starting to go, however some 18 year old kid owned it and fucked it up
On my second first gen VR4 now. Sold the first to save money for the birth of my second child. 130K miles and no issues. Everything works fine. I drive it hard but i care for it as well. I have a Hyundai i use to commute to work in (hour and a half each way). I take care of it too, but I've had to use the VR4 as a daily for weeks at a time while fixing the Hyundai on multiple occasions.... Perform the recommended maintenance, and enjoy! 3000GTs are only unreliable if you neglect or abuse them, which many people do....
I have a 1994 3000GT SL with 159k miles and ive only had one problem with it.. just one. The previous owner (just 1) didnt have any problems with it other than the normal maintenance that EVERY car needs. The only problem i had with it was the starter. Took it to the shop for a oil change, all of the sudden my starter was dead. Car didnt wanna start so I took my car to a different shop to get a new starter installed and was told car starters going bad is normal after a long period of time. I mean, from 1994-2021 and only one major small problem, i'd say thats reliable.
I'm buying a Stealth ES from a salvage yard here in Kansas. Needs a full interior repair, then I need to find out what went wrong with the engine to make it stop. Spark, air, fuel. Gotta check all 3.
I bought a 1998 one in May 2018, it may be slow but it's super reliable, looks nice. Looks better than most of cars that are in production now and you still can pick up chicks in the car hahaaa
Exactly! depends who had it and if basic maintenance was done prior..most ppl that don't know a damn thing about these beautiful machines buy them in need of tlc and expect it to be as reliable as a damn Honda. It can be if you get it up to par. Most of the time they have been in the wrong hands half it's life 😞 I've owned 8 of the twin turbo models and restored everyone of them back to being mechanically sound. Two of which sat for 3+ years and we're about ready to be parted, instead, got them running strong and healthy. One thing that people don't realize is the tanks rot real easily from the inside and can't sit very long without gas or treatment...thus causing the fuel injectors and filter to be clogged, as well as the pump eventually seizing. Saw this to be the most common problem on these cars along with timing belt tensioner failure/slipping and ecu capacitors leaking. These are and can be very fast! Are a blast to drive and nothing quite handles like the AWD AWS models! Love them! Currently I own both a red VR4 and a Pearl white Stealth TT and couldn't be happier 😁

Kevin, I just bought a Black 24 valve dual overhead cam 1996 3000GT not 3 weeks ago, it wouldn't idle or run food at all unless you stomped it down, rough idle, low power on hills and at low RPM. I and 2 friends were looking at it, my friend started pulling plug wires, 3d in the front didn't change nothing. I ordered a rebuilt injector for about $30. Went to another friends garage and we put it on. When we pulled okd one out was rust in there, so I sent someone to buy me a fuel filter for another $20, and we put that in. My friend blew into one end, more rust than fuel came out. We think that was the factory fuel filter, nobody bothered to change it since is under battery box. Car runs like a scalded dog now. It sat for years, probably with hardly any fuel in it. I'll run a few tanks next with some accetone in with the gas, then I'm going to change that filter again, I'll wager by then it will be like new engine.
I have a 98 base model that I have been rebuilding. I specifically choose it because its SOHC with a 5spd. I've worked on several of these 6g72 sohc motors and they are almost bullet proof. It's a non-interference motor so that's the biggest and best thing it has going for itself. The motor is super easy to work on. And thanks to Chrysler, dodge, and Plymouth, these engines are everywhere. There's like 20 years of vehicles with these motors in them.
@@SaltShakerer no in the car. I've done all new oil seals(cams, front/rear crank, valve covers) new timing belt and water pump. New exhaust manifold gaskets. New upper intake plenum gaskets, new clutch(with motor still mounted in the car), new motor mounts, and a bunch of little things like spark plugs O2sensors. The sohc motor is less complicated, more reliable, and easier to work on. There is more room to work around.
I have read so many reviews on reliable cars such as Honda accords, Civics, Mitsubishi Eclipses, and this car....and the ones who complain are the ones that don't know how to maintain their cars. They complain about taking it to the shop time and time again,and spending $$$. In which they could have did research on the issues through car forums and TH-cam videos, and probably fixed it themselves or had someone else fix it....BUT instead they went to a shop more than once, to a mechanic who works on mostly American Cars(not imports from Asia), and half the time the mechanic guesses what it is, and see if it works. You see... mechanics don't have time to do research on the internet to see what the issue is, but WE have time to.
I too have a 1998 base model, and its currently a hassle since the previous owner had not taken care of it. Its in an unreliable state since its in dire need of work and new parts. Regardless of the weight and the slow power of the SOHC, the car has alot of potential. People tell me to buy a VR4 instead, but I dismiss their suggestion. Solely because i dont want to go through the trouble of having to save up for another 3000GT. I'm ok with banking up funds to eventually rebuild the base into an SL or VR4. I got the car because I love it. I also want to understand what i can do with the car, know what problems to assess when they come up, and definitely do the things most owners rarely ever do which is conversions (mechanical or aesthetic). Maybe the car was not as very popular compared to other JDMs in its day because of its cons, but in the end its up to us as owners of such car to make it reliable and embrace it for its pros. I had quite a learning experience with mine so far and don't regret it. Fun fact, Jackie Chan is to thank for getting me hooked onto such a gem. The minute I saw him go up against an R32 with one in the movie Thunderbolt, I was like...I gotta have that.

MY 1991 VR4 has been fantastic for me.. I have had it for 4 years now, and I purchased it from an elderly gentleman in Tokyo and it has 131.000 km on the clock and it is running like the first day.. It is utterly stock in every way even down to the radio with casette player, but I am so happy for the car.. Looks fantastic, pulls good and did I mention looks fantastic.. Only downside to it is the utter horrible gas milage, but I knew that before I got the car and that even makes me love it more.. It gives me the safety of the car working as intended when it has good power but also has less then good gas milage :D
i own a 94 sl, its one of the most unreliable overengineered piece of 90s tech they ever made, I've literally rebuilt the motor and have spares for about every single electrical thing on this car, and yet I can BARELY get it to drive a mile without a new problem arrising
I think I put around 1-2K kms (this year is like 500KM) at the most on my 92 Stealth R/T. Aside from the battery going flat once a year, Its pure fun every time. Also I change the oil in the spring.
MY GST 260,,000 miles when I sold it, only $ was tires, oil changes, 60,000 mile timing belt and new CV joints at 200,000. My 3000gt base had 130,000 when I sold it. Looked and ran like new. My GSX had 2nd gear go at 40, 000. I only had it several months. The car was doing track days, second gear failure of cars any car running quarter miles is common.
I got a 91 Dodge stealth r/t twin turbo and 92 dodge stealth r/t NA and both have been realiable. Cost a good penny for maintenance but worh it. I love them.

Used to have the Dodge Stealth RT with a dual overhead cam 6 G 72 anybody that tells you that engine is unreliable or that car is unreliable is just scared to turn a wrench or pay someone to do so. I will tell you this, dual overhead cam model has a timing belt tensioner that is hydraulic and if it fails and you jump timing you'll have to rebuild your engine or buy new heads or both. That's what I had to do, first engine rebuild and it has to be a dual overhead cam interference motor. Wouldn't you know I got it right
Hell I have had my 95 SL for 12 years and besides routine stuff I have had no issues with it. I replace the alternator, did a water pump, timing kit, clutch, plugs and wires when I first got the car. Just put another water pump and timing kit in it 2 months ago, not because it needed it but as preventative maintenance. Hell I just got a 99 base model a week ago. These are the cars my son and daughter will get when they start driving because I know they will not leave them stranded on the side of the road.
I have two first gen VR-4. If you take care of them, they'll take care of you. As with any old car, you should expect the unexpected, but really - I love my cars. I really haven't had anything catastrophic happen. Just maintenance. The key is to maintain them. The VR-4 is the most finicky of the bunch because of how complex it is. Keep them fairly stock and keep them maintained and you should have a car that will last you a long time, looks great, and is a blast to drive. Neglect and improper modifications are the killers.
My 91 is es been through some bad owners but she and I have brought her back she's been so far very reliable. . I love my es it's not race car fast but it's fast enough and I'm getting 28 mpg when I drive her careful I love these cars.. plz plz plz take better care of her man.. these cars are getting more rare everyday .. ok anyway have a great day man

I found a mint 93 dodge stealth rt non turbo 140,000 miles Ferrari red real nice in side and out. It would be my first car seems like fun. Should I get it is just under $6000
What I'm getting from the comments is that maintenance is the most important thing to keep these cars running. Currently looking at a 91 GTO. Apart from regular oil changes, what are the other things to look out for as far as maintenance? Someone help out please!
my 95 stealth is just like yours, 2 years passes by and no major maintenance required except for ac failure :) just give her some headers and bigger pistons and she feels like a go kart with the right suspension set up
I watched your video before buying this beast and now I just bought one GTO SR here in Pakistan and everyone has these looks when they see it 😍 The only SR with just 38k miles on it and all in genuine condition 😎🏎️ This version has no Turbos. Should I opt for a turbo? The VR4 is the same engine with 1 turbos right
you need to do some maintenance, so many 3s owners run these cars forever with none. Mitsu's are all very reliable though, always were. Same with Toyota's and Honda's. A Twin Turbo of course has way more parts, but a NA car should run forever.
My old 92 VR4 with typical BPU mods was the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned by far. And I beat the crap out of that thing from 80k miles to 150k miles. Clutch was slipping when I sold it, that was it. Oh I did have to replace the steering rack after one night leaving work when it went from 32F + to about 0F and the standing water around my front wheels froze. I tried turning the wheel before moving, no one to blame by myself. Car was stupid fun in the winter though. I miss that car almost as much as I miss my old 1991 Galant VR4. 1189/2000 and ridiculously comfortable, and would eat up stock C5s when they first came out(GVR4 was stock internals/stock turbo but that was it for stock parts). Bought a 2000 Mustang GT in between...won't make that mistake again.
I own a vr-4 and its been one of the best cars ive owned and i also own a 4th gen z28 and i trust it before i would my Z28. The 3000GT is a tough car. Ive been a mechanic for 19 years and speaking of slow. None of the 3000gt models are actually slow. Never owned a base 3000gt but as far as the SL and the VR -4 neither of those 2 are slow. I can bury the hand on my VR-4 and my friends SL will stay right behind me.
It's just the base models from 97 to 99 that were awfully slow. Mitsubishi is to blame for that one, utilizing SOHC engines from the discontinued Dodge Stealth to change the base model, which was not a great idea considering that you had base models prior fitted with the DOHCs and were not really much different from the SL. If they were going to do so with using SOHCs, it should've been since the car's debut. Maybe it had much to do with the economy changing at the time and making something slightly more reliable but with such late timing it inevitably made the car disappointing.
Lol. Well chances are there will still be alot around for most. People are too busy trying to buy a Supra or Skyline these days. It'll be awhile until i ever get an RX7, so I made a cool choice getting the GT.
I have two VR4's and they have been easy to maintain and are reliable. I also had a 93 base model which I drove almost 100,000 miles before I sold it and it was an awesome car. In fact, I'm pretty sure I drove it for about 10 years and the difference between my purchase price and the price when I sold it was just under $10,000. So, if it were not for super high insurance, the car cost me around a $1,000 a year to own in the end. If you want a fun ride with a lot of bang for your buck then pick one of these cars up for sure. I would stay away from the automatic transmissions in early production years...they did fail often which may be why it has mixed reviews.
Hello. I just picked up a 96 VR-4. Just wondering what are some good, safe mods I can do to bump up the power a little. I have a Borla cat-back on it, and a K&N intake already. Also, where is a good place to get OEM and aftermarket parts from? I see ninjaperformance.com has quite an extensive list of OEM stuff priced reasonable. Just wondering if there were others. Thanks for any help you can give!
The supra was reliable with turbos. u can’t say that about a 300z, rx7 nor a 3kgt in those days of the rice rocket era of mid 90s. the n/a is always going to be reliable except the rx7. Imho rhey all looked great in their own styling but i am partial to the mkiv supra. not as big of a fan of the skyline as far as looks. it’s the reason for bmws. looks like a sport sedan and that doesn’t do it for me

Since U have a hole on ur exhaust I rec U consider just having a straight pipe installed with aftermarket muffler. It make it a lil faster n louder n less heavier.
The only flaw with this 6 G g72 dual overhead cam is the timing belt tensioner that's it other than that the heads are damn near Bulletproof and the block is cast-iron so there's very little Flex and if you put it back together correctly it'll run and run and run and run and run and run and run and run and run and run and run until the fuel pump gives out owned a 94 Dodge Stealth naturally aspirated dual overhead cam made more money with it then I paid for it and made more money with it after I rebuilt it than I ever paid for it all together. Solid engine solid car the RT came with a roll cage installed since its reason for being so fucking heavy
I've had a 95 VR4 (BPU) for 15 years, quite reliable and get 25-30 mpg hwy. Had a 95 SL for 3 years, quite reliable too. Biggest issues have been AWS leaks etc, the 6G is great and the cars are super stout compared to most cars.
its a very reliable i just bought one and its already at 205k miles and its strong and reliable and also i own a 420a eclipse and a 4g64 spyder and they are all reliable daily driven aslonng as u maintain them they will run 4ever
Great video the gt3000 that have the problem are the turbos and that's mainly because the people who have the VR 4 beat the crap out of them like you and I probably would if we had the VR 4 .

I know this is a bad question already but are the 4 speed automatic transmissions good on the Mitsubishi 3000? The reason why I ask this is because I can’t drive a manual due to my arthritis.
The 30 & 20 series trans were not designed for the US It was for the asian flat delta city's if you race it expect problems 20 series was in mirage Transfer case to trans splines the big problem stripping $$$$ to fix

These are great cars and very fun to drive. My son bought a used '94 SL At 116K miles, crank sensor went out which is a lot of work to replace it. While I was at it, I went ahead and changed the oil pump, water pump, timing belt and tensioner along with the crank sensor. If you can do the work yourself and you stay on top of the maintenance then you will really enjoy these cars. This car is fast enough as it has smooth power through all five gears and the cornering is amazing! I simply love this car!! Great video!!

MotoP thanks, previous owner had the car for 16 years, it’s basic bolt ons such as a catback exhaust system filters and boost controller. 13G turbos came with the U.K. spec, 410bhp @14psi. 15psi is max for the turbos with my current set up. It’s outpaced a few 600cc bikes. These 3000GT’s are monsters
Take care of the car and she will return the favor. Most people complaining of reliability issues have 3000GT's that have been to the moon and back, changed hands more than a Thailand hooker, and have been worked on by kids still going through puberty. I can only speak for the VR4 but I bought my 2 owner 95 with 70k miles. It's still running great 8 years and 20k later because I TAKE CARE OF IT! Any high performance machine needs a lot of maintenance and unfortunately people that by these cars for cheap don't realize that.

Had my base 25 years, just the usual maintenance, 111000 miles, just did struts, clutch, timing and serpentine belts. Good for another 25 years and still pretty when shined up. Fun to drive
Im a 1993 base DOHC owner and learned ALOT over the year. You see the DOHC dont have alot of room in the cylinder walls which causes friction against the rod bearings. Causing the engine to "blow". If that happens you spun a rod bearing with possible crank damage but the good news is parts are cheap. Just rebuild the gaskets seals engine bearings oil pumps water pumps timing belts rods with original piston and itll last forever. And obviously transmission maintenance.
I just bought a 1994 3000GT base that i had to tow home because a lifter lost prime, slung the rocker arm out and scarred the cam lobe. I spent about a month resourcing parts (specifically the cams) and finally got it put back together monday. According to every forum i saw, it wasnt supposed to start up. It started up like it was never an issue to begin with. It still has the norotious lifter tick but thats purely from the onther STOCK 25yr old lifters that had the 1mm hole vs the gen 3s which had the 3mm hole. Didnt drop a valve, no loss in compression, sat for atleast a few months with the valve cover off, and it didnt even hesitate to start. So idk where this unreliability crap came from, my guess is from terrible owners that blame the car for their screw ups, but its not true. The 3s was one of my dream cars and now i own one that i was told several times would never start without a complete rebuild, i esseintially slapped a new USED set of cams and a brand new lifter and it came right back to life. Needs a few more general upkeep items to get it back to good health but you gotta get a heartbeat before you can save a life and i got the heartbeat lol
I have the 1997 base model with the SOHC as well. I just did a compression test on all 6 cylinders and the results were impressive! All were between 165-175 PSI at 151K miles! Still plenty of life left in the motor. I'm planning on installing a turbo soon since it's not my daily driver.

You are absolutely right- the Sohc models are quite reliable. The dohcs a little less so. Used to own a stealth ES myself.
Alot of the flak comes from 'friends' of owners who had bad experiences and like any car some motors arw just temperamental.
In regards to the VR4 model, alot of people forget these cars were nearly 40-50k new. And despite having depreciated as much as they have, their maintenance is still that of a 50k car. One wouldnt expect maintenance on a porsche 911 to be next to nill just because its value dropped. Same for any car of that caliber- and for its time the 3S was ahead of the curve.

@@wewatch7465 I'm not Tim, but I can vouch. The VR4 is great in the snow. I hate to actually use the car in the snow, as I don't want it getting covered in salt and such... but they're troopers in the inclement weather. They're like driving a fast but controllable tank that's glued to the road.
Reliability is down to the user. Look after it with good-quality parts, and it'll be good to you.
If you'd like to upgrade it a little, see if you can plonk a 6G75 into it. One out of a non-MIVEC Eclipse. Or a DOHC version. Will get a LOT more boogie into it without the increase in complexity ;)
No its NOT heavy , a single over head cam and the DOHC are between 32-3300lbs , a Honda prelude is 3200lbs to put it in prospective , they FEEL heavy because Mits put a spring rate and shocks in the car that's better suited to a Lincoln Town car , plus the sway bars (especially the rear's) are a joke.. The DOHC 3kgt is actually quicker than a NA 300z and Supra (and better on gas) who both come in heavier than the FWD 3kgt. As for reliability ? I have had my 94 DOHC for 18 out of 24 years of its life , I drive it like a Porsche here and there and it has been ROCK SOLID , as good as the many Honda's I have had... and I'm a Honda lover. Besides the usual tires , brake pads , rotors , a clutch , T-belt/water pump and front lower ball joints , everything else is org ... Incredible IMO
BTW: The commonly talked about spun main bearings are almost always a result of an idiot mechanic jacking up the car by the oil pan , crushing it , pinching off the oil pick up , If you are going to buy one , inspect the oil pan for signs of idiot abuse.
I weighed my 92 N/A Stealth R/T at 3100 (ish)lbs. It's a nimble car. Took an SRT Cherokee (not a new one) on the highway. Fun as hell and gets looks your way.

We need more ppl saying this!!! I have a turbo Stealth, 2 NA Stealths, and a 3000gt... They die because of lack of maintenance...mostly the timing belt, or ppl that really have no clue working on them!! But cmon, they are the equivalent of a $50k sports car, so do the maintenance lol!! And here's the best part nobody mentions: if you break/slip a timing belt, you csn replace the valves, and freshen the whole motor (rings, bearings, gaskets) for a few hundred dollars!!!!

I've had it for 12 years now and i would say it's very reliable, best thing to do is to fit some forged pistons , rods , metal head gasket and a scania truck intercooler ,keep the power around 480bhp and this engine will never break ,you can go 160 mph all day long.

haven't watched the video yet, but a year into my personal 224k mile SL revival, i'm gonna guess some key points are PCB, Idle controller, Thermostat, defrost vents, headgaskets, radiator, clutch master cylinder, vacuum hose for the brake booster, and ALL 24 valve stem seals under the DOHC.
edit: all of that may have sounded like complaints, but when you own one of these you quickly learn the bond-building relationship of reviving and learning skills from a car that will truly leave you with a bigger smile everytime you drive it than any of your other cars
The people commenting on your videos are probably getting all of their shit from VR-4's. The VR-4 was a SHOWCASE of state-of-the-art tech. So many things that were not exactly proven before that car, so many things to go wrong. The base model has very few of those things at all. That's why it'll run forever. Despite that, I love my VR-4 and find it worth the work and expense.
I've own 3 3kgts. Never had any issues. All 3 were dohc.
I don’t want to be pessimistic, which I’m not. I love these cars. I owned a 99 base model and had so many problems. The trans went out, air idle control, alternator, everything seemed to be failing. I did an entire trans overhaul kit that didn’t fix the car and fixed the air idle control and EGR valve and still couldn’t get it to idle. It would drive but just couldn’t idle. I dropped probably 6k just trying to get it to run and couldn’t so I had to sell it
They get the rep because of their age and how people abuse them. Like 6k launches literally dumping the clutch over and over. Not maintaining it, like at all.
It’s not hard to find out what issues they have. They’re really not that expensive to maintain other than changing the timing belt and water pump every 60k or every 8-10 years. I’ve owned a tt for 18 yrs and 2 tt’s for like 12 yrs. Their reliability has been as good as any other daily drivers I’ve had over the years, which has been a bunch. Plus I’m talking about 2 500hp cars, not even close to stock.

I got a 96 3000GT base model. I had it for 9 years with high mileage 240.994 went to so much trouble fixing it up and I still love the car.
Did you change the timing belt?
I change the timing belt, spark plugs, distributor, aftermarket intake, oxygen sensors, Performance Radiator, and a new water pump
But she still needs work my next step replacing the fuel lines
Nice video. The most important I mention to people is that 90 percent of the spun bearings out there are from dumbasses jacking the car up by the oil pan and crushing it in when doing the timing service, reducing oil flow at the pickup tube.
They are finicky at times but such cool cars to drive and look at. Supra performance at one fifth the bloody price.
My vr4 is super expensive to fix when it needs parts. Especially since I live in Canada and have to get most of my stuff shipped from the u.s.

93 vr4 here. got it at 103k blown transfer case. got a new one and had to replace coolant temp sensor in 6 years up to 132k. only issue is trans is starting to go, however some 18 year old kid owned it and fucked it up

On my second first gen VR4 now. Sold the first to save money for the birth of my second child. 130K miles and no issues. Everything works fine. I drive it hard but i care for it as well. I have a Hyundai i use to commute to work in (hour and a half each way). I take care of it too, but I've had to use the VR4 as a daily for weeks at a time while fixing the Hyundai on multiple occasions.... Perform the recommended maintenance, and enjoy! 3000GTs are only unreliable if you neglect or abuse them, which many people do....

I have a 1994 3000GT SL with 159k miles and ive only had one problem with it.. just one. The previous owner (just 1) didnt have any problems with it other than the normal maintenance that EVERY car needs. The only problem i had with it was the starter. Took it to the shop for a oil change, all of the sudden my starter was dead. Car didnt wanna start so I took my car to a different shop to get a new starter installed and was told car starters going bad is normal after a long period of time. I mean, from 1994-2021 and only one major small problem, i'd say thats reliable.
I'm buying a Stealth ES from a salvage yard here in Kansas. Needs a full interior repair, then I need to find out what went wrong with the engine to make it stop. Spark, air, fuel. Gotta check all 3.
I bought a 1998 one in May 2018, it may be slow but it's super reliable, looks nice. Looks better than most of cars that are in production now and you still can pick up chicks in the car hahaaa
Exactly! depends who had it and if basic maintenance was done prior..most ppl that don't know a damn thing about these beautiful machines buy them in need of tlc and expect it to be as reliable as a damn Honda. It can be if you get it up to par. Most of the time they have been in the wrong hands half it's life 😞
I've owned 8 of the twin turbo models and restored everyone of them back to being mechanically sound. Two of which sat for 3+ years and we're about ready to be parted, instead, got them running strong and healthy. One thing that people don't realize is the tanks rot real easily from the inside and can't sit very long without gas or treatment...thus causing the fuel injectors and filter to be clogged, as well as the pump eventually seizing. Saw this to be the most common problem on these cars along with timing belt tensioner failure/slipping and ecu capacitors leaking.
These are and can be very fast! Are a blast to drive and nothing quite handles like the AWD AWS models! Love them! Currently I own both a red VR4 and a Pearl white Stealth TT and couldn't be happier 😁

Kevin, I just bought a Black 24 valve dual overhead cam 1996 3000GT not 3 weeks ago, it wouldn't idle or run food at all unless you stomped it down, rough idle, low power on hills and at low RPM. I and 2 friends were looking at it, my friend started pulling plug wires, 3d in the front didn't change nothing. I ordered a rebuilt injector for about $30. Went to another friends garage and we put it on. When we pulled okd one out was rust in there, so I sent someone to buy me a fuel filter for another $20, and we put that in. My friend blew into one end, more rust than fuel came out. We think that was the factory fuel filter, nobody bothered to change it since is under battery box. Car runs like a scalded dog now. It sat for years, probably with hardly any fuel in it. I'll run a few tanks next with some accetone in with the gas, then I'm going to change that filter again, I'll wager by then it will be like new engine.

I have a 98 base model that I have been rebuilding. I specifically choose it because its SOHC with a 5spd. I've worked on several of these 6g72 sohc motors and they are almost bullet proof. It's a non-interference motor so that's the biggest and best thing it has going for itself. The motor is super easy to work on. And thanks to Chrysler, dodge, and Plymouth, these engines are everywhere. There's like 20 years of vehicles with these motors in them.

@@SaltShakerer no in the car. I've done all new oil seals(cams, front/rear crank, valve covers) new timing belt and water pump. New exhaust manifold gaskets. New upper intake plenum gaskets, new clutch(with motor still mounted in the car), new motor mounts, and a bunch of little things like spark plugs O2sensors. The sohc motor is less complicated, more reliable, and easier to work on. There is more room to work around.
I have read so many reviews on reliable cars such as Honda accords, Civics, Mitsubishi Eclipses, and this car....and the ones who complain are the ones that don't know how to maintain their cars.
They complain about taking it to the shop time and time again,and spending $$$. In which they could have did research on the issues through car forums and TH-cam videos, and probably fixed it themselves or had someone else fix it....BUT instead they went to a shop more than once, to a mechanic who works on mostly American Cars(not imports from Asia), and half the time the mechanic guesses what it is, and see if it works.
You see... mechanics don't have time to do research on the internet to see what the issue is, but WE have time to.
I too have a 1998 base model, and its currently a hassle since the previous owner had not taken care of it. Its in an unreliable state since its in dire need of work and new parts. Regardless of the weight and the slow power of the SOHC, the car has alot of potential. People tell me to buy a VR4 instead, but I dismiss their suggestion. Solely because i dont want to go through the trouble of having to save up for another 3000GT. I'm ok with banking up funds to eventually rebuild the base into an SL or VR4. I got the car because I love it. I also want to understand what i can do with the car, know what problems to assess when they come up, and definitely do the things most owners rarely ever do which is conversions (mechanical or aesthetic). Maybe the car was not as very popular compared to other JDMs in its day because of its cons, but in the end its up to us as owners of such car to make it reliable and embrace it for its pros. I had quite a learning experience with mine so far and don't regret it. Fun fact, Jackie Chan is to thank for getting me hooked onto such a gem. The minute I saw him go up against an R32 with one in the movie Thunderbolt, I was like...I gotta have that.
MY 1991 VR4 has been fantastic for me.. I have had it for 4 years now, and I purchased it from an elderly gentleman in Tokyo and it has 131.000 km on the clock and it is running like the first day.. It is utterly stock in every way even down to the radio with casette player, but I am so happy for the car.. Looks fantastic, pulls good and did I mention looks fantastic.. Only downside to it is the utter horrible gas milage, but I knew that before I got the car and that even makes me love it more.. It gives me the safety of the car working as intended when it has good power but also has less then good gas milage :D
i own a 94 sl, its one of the most unreliable overengineered piece of 90s tech they ever made, I've literally rebuilt the motor and have spares for about every single electrical thing on this car, and yet I can BARELY get it to drive a mile without a new problem arrising
I think I put around 1-2K kms (this year is like 500KM) at the most on my 92 Stealth R/T. Aside from the battery going flat once a year, Its pure fun every time. Also I change the oil in the spring.
MY GST 260,,000 miles when I sold it, only $ was tires, oil changes, 60,000 mile timing belt and new CV joints at 200,000. My 3000gt base had 130,000 when I sold it. Looked and ran like new. My GSX had 2nd gear go at 40, 000. I only had it several months. The car was doing track days, second gear failure of cars any car running quarter miles is common.

Used to have the Dodge Stealth RT with a dual overhead cam 6 G 72 anybody that tells you that engine is unreliable or that car is unreliable is just scared to turn a wrench or pay someone to do so. I will tell you this, dual overhead cam model has a timing belt tensioner that is hydraulic and if it fails and you jump timing you'll have to rebuild your engine or buy new heads or both. That's what I had to do, first engine rebuild and it has to be a dual overhead cam interference motor. Wouldn't you know I got it right
My 94 sl has 278k and I drive it thousands of miles a week. It's my daily through 100+ summer days and -40 winters (north dakota)

Hell I have had my 95 SL for 12 years and besides routine stuff I have had no issues with it. I replace the alternator, did a water pump, timing kit, clutch, plugs and wires when I first got the car. Just put another water pump and timing kit in it 2 months ago, not because it needed it but as preventative maintenance. Hell I just got a 99 base model a week ago. These are the cars my son and daughter will get when they start driving because I know they will not leave them stranded on the side of the road.
I have two first gen VR-4. If you take care of them, they'll take care of you. As with any old car, you should expect the unexpected, but really - I love my cars. I really haven't had anything catastrophic happen. Just maintenance. The key is to maintain them. The VR-4 is the most finicky of the bunch because of how complex it is. Keep them fairly stock and keep them maintained and you should have a car that will last you a long time, looks great, and is a blast to drive. Neglect and improper modifications are the killers.
My 91 is es been through some bad owners but she and I have brought her back she's been so far very reliable. . I love my es it's not race car fast but it's fast enough and I'm getting 28 mpg when I drive her careful I love these cars.. plz plz plz take better care of her man.. these cars are getting more rare everyday .. ok anyway have a great day man

my 95 stealth is just like yours, 2 years passes by and no major maintenance required except for ac failure :) just give her some headers and bigger pistons and she feels like a go kart with the right suspension set up

you need to do some maintenance, so many 3s owners run these cars forever with none. Mitsu's are all very reliable though, always were. Same with Toyota's and Honda's. A Twin Turbo of course has way more parts, but a NA car should run forever.

My old 92 VR4 with typical BPU mods was the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned by far. And I beat the crap out of that thing from 80k miles to 150k miles. Clutch was slipping when I sold it, that was it. Oh I did have to replace the steering rack after one night leaving work when it went from 32F + to about 0F and the standing water around my front wheels froze. I tried turning the wheel before moving, no one to blame by myself. Car was stupid fun in the winter though. I miss that car almost as much as I miss my old 1991 Galant VR4. 1189/2000 and ridiculously comfortable, and would eat up stock C5s when they first came out(GVR4 was stock internals/stock turbo but that was it for stock parts). Bought a 2000 Mustang GT in between...won't make that mistake again.
I have had 5 GTO,s in 20 year's and they have all been reliable.
I own a 93 SL and a 94 base model. They both have the same engine! A Dohc! Unfortunately they are both automatic 👎 sluggish off the line.

I own a vr-4 and its been one of the best cars ive owned and i also own a 4th gen z28 and i trust it before i would my Z28. The 3000GT is a tough car. Ive been a mechanic for 19 years and speaking of slow. None of the 3000gt models are actually slow. Never owned a base 3000gt but as far as the SL and the VR -4 neither of those 2 are slow. I can bury the hand on my VR-4 and my friends SL will stay right behind me.
It's just the base models from 97 to 99 that were awfully slow. Mitsubishi is to blame for that one, utilizing SOHC engines from the discontinued Dodge Stealth to change the base model, which was not a great idea considering that you had base models prior fitted with the DOHCs and were not really much different from the SL. If they were going to do so with using SOHCs, it should've been since the car's debut. Maybe it had much to do with the economy changing at the time and making something slightly more reliable but with such late timing it inevitably made the car disappointing.
My dream car.....quit talking good about them so there's more for us the people that love them

Lol. Well chances are there will still be alot around for most. People are too busy trying to buy a Supra or Skyline these days. It'll be awhile until i ever get an RX7, so I made a cool choice getting the GT.
I have two VR4's and they have been easy to maintain and are reliable. I also had a 93 base model which I drove almost 100,000 miles before I sold it and it was an awesome car. In fact, I'm pretty sure I drove it for about 10 years and the difference between my purchase price and the price when I sold it was just under $10,000. So, if it were not for super high insurance, the car cost me around a $1,000 a year to own in the end. If you want a fun ride with a lot of bang for your buck then pick one of these cars up for sure. I would stay away from the automatic transmissions in early production years...they did fail often which may be why it has mixed reviews.
Hello. I just picked up a 96 VR-4. Just wondering what are some good, safe mods I can do to bump up the power a little. I have a Borla cat-back on it, and a K&N intake already. Also, where is a good place to get OEM and aftermarket parts from? I see ninjaperformance.com has quite an extensive list of OEM stuff priced reasonable. Just wondering if there were others. Thanks for any help you can give!
The supra was reliable with turbos. u can’t say that about a 300z, rx7 nor a 3kgt in those days of the rice rocket era of mid 90s. the n/a is always going to be reliable except the rx7. Imho rhey all looked great in their own styling but i am partial to the mkiv supra. not as big of a fan of the skyline as far as looks. it’s the reason for bmws. looks like a sport sedan and that doesn’t do it for me

Since U have a hole on ur exhaust I rec U consider just having a straight pipe installed with aftermarket muffler. It make it a lil faster n louder n less heavier.
The only flaw with this 6 G g72 dual overhead cam is the timing belt tensioner that's it other than that the heads are damn near Bulletproof and the block is cast-iron so there's very little Flex and if you put it back together correctly it'll run and run and run and run and run and run and run and run and run and run and run until the fuel pump gives out owned a 94 Dodge Stealth naturally aspirated dual overhead cam made more money with it then I paid for it and made more money with it after I rebuilt it than I ever paid for it all together. Solid engine solid car the RT came with a roll cage installed since its reason for being so fucking heavy

Yessir I had a 94 base and mine also gave me a total of zero problems. Insanely reliable
I've had a 95 VR4 (BPU) for 15 years, quite reliable and get 25-30 mpg hwy. Had a 95 SL for 3 years, quite reliable too. Biggest issues have been AWS leaks etc, the 6G is great and the cars are super stout compared to most cars.

its a very reliable i just bought one and its already at 205k miles and its strong and reliable and also i own a 420a eclipse and a 4g64 spyder and they are all reliable daily driven
aslonng as u maintain them they will run 4ever
Great video the gt3000 that have the problem are the turbos and that's mainly because the people who have the VR 4 beat the crap out of them like you and I probably would if we had the VR 4 .

I have an sl 98 and it drives and runs great. But you have to change and check the oil frequently. But overall its a reliable car.
I know this is a bad question already but are the 4 speed automatic transmissions good on the Mitsubishi 3000? The reason why I ask this is because I can’t drive a manual due to my arthritis.
The one in my stealth never gave me any problems

The 30 & 20 series trans were not designed for the US It was for the asian flat delta city's if you race it expect problems 20 series was in mirage
