I owned a '93 VR4 ('91 stealth before that), and yep I remember these things being problems back before I sold it in the early 2000's. Even back then you couldn't get anyone to work on it, certainly couldn't find wheels for it, and couldn't get parts for it. I couldn't imagine trying to keep this car on the road in 2022 so cheers to you dude! Absolutely the favorite 2 cars of my life though. Enjoy it!

I am surprised you didn't mention reading fault-codes haha. I own a 1992 myself and when I went to read a fault-code I almost pulled my hair out. Firstly I bought an adapter to use a obd reader but for some reason that didn't work. After that I tried reading it with a diod, but the information on what ports to use was limited to say the least, I ended up just finding the problem on my own hahaha. Great video btw❤️

I recently ran into this. I followed a guide on 3SI to connect a multimeter to the OBD1 port. You watch for DC current pulses long or short and those will correspond with the code. I got 4 long flashes followed by 2 short which should indicate code 42. However, according to 3SI, that code doesn't exist. Through a Google search I found that it could be a code related to a fuel pump issue, which could explain the symptoms the car is showing. I'm putting in a Chrome ECU (which might solve my problem if it's being caused by leaky ECU capacitors) and this will actually allow me to convert to OBD2 and also tune.

Get flashable ECU with OBDII connector. If you're running stock, its a ticking time bomb before the caps fail anyway. Of course having it rebuilt is cheaper, but you don't get the nice things that come with it.

Nice video to see what current owners don't like. I owned it in the 90 to 2006. What I hate was the foggy windows, broken AC vents on the dash, small rotors that warp, can't keep up with MRS in twistys, and gas hungry. I got 12mpg because it was modified. Did 1/4 mile in 11.87.

Late comment to an older vid but I've owned 3. Rebuilt an engine, clutch changes, timing belts, 11 second cars, etc. They're beautiful machines and I miss mine dearly. They are complicated because of the transverse engine setup, as many cars are, but the turbos do complicate it further. Try slapping on some adapter plates (back in the day) and 16Gs on it, that was fun. Never the less, you need to be a competent wrench to work on these vehicles, be it NA or Turbo. They're amazing though and worth it.

the VR4 was my first turbo car, so it has a special place in my heart. Altered Atmosphere in Gaitherburg MD serviced it.. The engine was a pain to work on and I eventually got rid of it cuz of the transmission had to get fixed twice. I remember beating a Supra in it.. but it was probably a NA.. Other than a few vacuum leaks and A/C always going out.. I rarely had issues.

I had one in silver … pop up light rule 💪🏻. Fuel consumption was a nightmare, A/C was always on the blink including control panel. The seat had body hugging option - but the actuator was uncovered spring that would gradually rip its was through the seat and leather. But there isn’t a day when I don’t miss it … what a chick magnet

I'm with you on all 5. You're spot on brother. I have a 97 vr4 (parting out) and 92 Stealth TT. But I put the front & rear caliper & rotors off the 97 and put them on the 92. And trying to still find rims are a nightmare! I'm almost ready to go back to stock rims. 😫 I'm lucky per say the 92 came with aftermarket wheel. But they feel like center blocks. So I'm searching for light weight or forged wheel. Very difficult to find the fit. I saw that the wheels are a 46 offset which I had to dig on forums to get that info.

It is funny you mentioned about finding someone who can work on the car. I first bought mine in 2002. The Mitsubishi dealer near me did not even know what it was. They were questioning if I'm sure it is a Mitsubishi.
I have owned mine for 21 years. You really have to be either financially wealthy, or you have to be mechanically inclined and enjoy working on it enough to learn as you go. I have spent $6,200 over the past 4 years on mine but I chose not to do that work. That is just major stuff. The biggest price tag was my fuel lines from the sender to the rail were rusted out, and my rear brake lines rusted out. That is not including regular maintenance. I have never had a problem finding wheels and tires like many seem to have. I have custom wheels and always get all season tires.

I own a FWD Twin Turbo Stealth R/T. I built it myself. Put the engine( a J-Spec) in myself and the 3SX front Mount inter cooler. I had a posi unit put in the transaxle. I had to use the one O2 wire ecu from Japan to make it run. Also upgraded the fuel pump. The car runs great. I will just need to put a better clutch in it. The one I am currently running is not strong enough and slips on anything more than 2lbs. of boost. I find these cars pretty straight forward to wrench on. Just need to take your time and remove more stuff than normal to access parts. This is why it is called the average man’s exotic. Look at the prices of mechanics that work on exotics. Same with this car. So learn how to wrench on them yourself. Save yourself a lot of money. The cars a blast to drive. And folks love these old cars.

I had a fully built out '1991 VR4 with a built out engine from Pamepena Motorsports. But for the most part it was BPU,. It was meant to have eventually upgraded turbos/fuel and handle 800hp. It was so much fun senior year of high school and all through college...on the rare occasion that it wasn't broken.
I paid 6k for the car with 140k on it, rebuilt engine. Keep this in mind, even in 1991, it cost 40k. That's 90k in 2023.

LOL at the cupholder issue. I remember the struggle well in my old '93 base. But almost every car has something ridiculously annoying. My newer Z's equivalent issue is the hatch requiring two pushes of the button and some help with your hand to get it to open.
On the wheels issue, back in the day, 5Zigen's (particularly FN01R-C's) were all the rage - I don't recall anyone mentioning fitment issues on the 1st gen VR-4's - have you tried them?
As far as repairs, I had my T-belt and 120k service done believe it or not by an independent family friend who specialized in old Volkswagens... basically nothing even resembling most modern cars. I believe I got quotes from a dealer or two also - mind you this was back in 2003. Unfortunately, from a parts availability perspective (and willingness of people to work on them), 2023 is about 20 years late to the party. I have toyed with the idea of picking up another 3000GT for winter duty, but I don't like the parts availability issue (and unlike, e.g., Mustangs and Camaro's, aftermarket was never particularly strong for this platform to begin with, even in its heyday).

Screw the cup holders!!!! But most of the other points are spot on.. I had a friggin nightmare finding wheels for my 1991 VR4, and the exhaust is an absolute nightmare as it is basically impossible for me to get one shipped as I live in the middle of nowhere and it is so effing annoying!!!!
But 1 thing I managed to do which you mentioned is to replace the rear turbo without removing the plenum chamber and all that junk around there, but to put it mildy, it was a F nightmare!!!!! These cars are fun, a proper eyelooker, but the maintenance on them sux proper salty donkey ballz!!!!

It's not bc they don't want to work on it! Trust me, most Mitsu techs would LOVE to work on your VR-4 🙂 I own a '91 VR-4 & I do all my own work. She's not that hard to wrench on if you know what you're doing.

I am not a car mechanic, but I work on heavy stuff. Had to change the cambelt myself, was reading the manufacturer manual, and can be lost in translation easily. I would not trust another mechanic to work on it besides myself. Parts are hard to come by, and when they do, they are super expensive.
I have to sort out the miss fire problem and then OH NO! Poor idling and stalling. Try fixing that, making sure that you have enough funds in the bank to buy the part.

Those mitsubishi dealers that couldn't work on your 3000gt, should be reported to mitsubishi motors and stripped of their dealership. This wouldn't go in a European mitsubishi dealer.
They are obligated by the mitsubishi brand always to find a competent specialist to your specific problem, even if they don't have any themselves.
