- Team Cherry has dropped a link to the Hollow Knight Beta that was released to Kickstarter backers back in 2015. In this video we go through a bunch of little changes as well as some secrets hidden in the game files. I had a lot of fun dissecting this beta while we wait for Silksong. A huge thanks to Sumwan and Mola for helping me tear this beta to shreds. They've also been updating the Wiki to include some of these new discoveries.

How peculiar. The unused backdash ability seems to have been given to Hornet, I noticed her having a spider-scurry back-dash in the trailer.

It's more of a back-crawl? Idk it's weird but it also says that she IS fully a weaver , but seriously all we saw in her actions is silk :/ ( bout her weaveriness ? )

Hornet also back-steps in Hollow Knight during both of her fights. she doesn't go all arachnid mode, but she still moves backwards at times in an attempt to dodge your attacks

Noticed the soul vessel doesn't break upon death or seem to reduce your soul capacity in the shade segment.
When silksong is released he will have a brand new library of sounds to use in his intros
To be honest I feel like the back-step evade move could’ve actually been a pretty cool technique if implemented a little better into the level designs of fights
but it's not really relevant when you can just dash backwards

Options can lead to clutter, and redundant options are a problem. This isn't always true, but with how simple the base combat is... and how hard it gets... this backdash would be for all intents and purposes redundant or get in the way. You'd be harming yourself using it... which is something a player shouldn't ever face.
What can the backdash do the regular dash can't? It would just be a bad habit for the player... offering the player less. By having the dash be a single option means you have perfect control over it so rather then forming a bad habit then you get a new skill which universally applies its effect in every way better and gives the player the ability to learn and plan around it as a whole.
Yes, back stepping would be a frustrating thing that punishes you.
...and that is likely PART of the reason it was removed, you still have the option via the normal dash.
More isn't always more fun, it can be significantly worse and punish the player.
I think a big part of it being removed is that players would always use it to get places faster, so before getting dash the Knight would be going backwards all the time which would look goofy as hell
Even Team Cherry called The Knight "Hollow Knight" at one point. I can sleep well knowing this.

I might just be stupid but I've always imagine The Radiance's influence to kind of be like Nosk. It goes into your memories and instead of taking someone it takes something you want and uses it to trick you into joining them. I think this because of Myla. Myla wanted riches from the crystals. Then the crystals start singing to her. I took this as The Radiance is using her DREAMS of wealth as an incentive. I always thought this is what dreams meant but I'm probably wrong.
The crystals were rickrolling myla.

I think Elderbug's dialogue was an early in idea of Hornet's story.
Her and the Hollow Knight are siblings so maybe the singing was a shared memory of Midwife/White Lady singing to them. Hollow Knight may have been calling out to Hornet as he knew he was becoming weaker.
Hornet did technically lose both of her parents to the ruins as their deaths happened around the same time as the fall of Hallownest. She also "lost" her brother when he was sealed in the egg.

Goddamn it, that "weird empty pit" tricked me so hard. I remember it standing out to me because it seemed so odd and out of place. I tried destroying the floor with my nail, nope. Later, when I got the dive, I remembered that pit. Tried the dive on the pit, nothing. Later, got the shadow dive, and I was like "ahh this will probably break that pit". Nope.
All this time and it turns out it was just an unused spike pit?! At least my intuition was right that it was out of place lmao

Scheming Weasel is one of Kevin's most underrated tracks. I'm glad someone's put the spotlight on it, even if it is in such a small capacity.

4:10 my theory is the dirtmouth stag station was built before dirtmouth was founded, probably as a stag station to the entrance of the crystal peak mines (there was probably a bridge at the bit where you're supposed to crystal dash). so after hallownest fell, bugs wanting to explore the ruins naturally gathered and built up a town around the stag station

So I just watched the lore vid yesterday and now I've just gotten hooked on the channel
Hidden Station was added in Hidden Dreams after the game came out, so the pale king doodle on the map + station marker in the beta version seems to imply that it was removed during development but then readded later in Hidden Dreams, and I'm curious why.
