Just to be clear, Ellina is traveling through Hallownest at the same time as the Knight. She finds Sheo's painting that he made of the Knight. She sees Bretta in both the Fungal Wastes and Dirtmouth. She goes the Ancient Basin both before and after the door to the Abyss was opened. She also visits the Forgotten Crossroads both before and after it becomes the Infected Crossroads. Also, Ellina mentions that Vespa is dead when she arrives: "In the intervening time, the queen passed away in solitude, leaving her bees to fend for themselves."
The only way to make Ellina's claim work is to assume that "unmarred" means "infected but not influenced".

Hey Mossbag, couldn't the glyps have been made for the all the various vessels?
The White Lady said she was expecting someone like the knight, so maybye, after the first failure, she somehow took some vessels out of the abyss (somehow ignoring the closed door, but hey, i'm not a tree/bug god thing, so what do i know) brought them to the surface, and then left the glyps to guide them to Hallownest.
The one in front of the abyss might have been the only one made by the King, after he chose the Hollow knight.
It'd also explain the "Only this kingdom could produce one such as you", since they created all of them.

After you kill Monomon, you later find quirrel sitting by the blue lake, his dialogue implying that now there's nothing left for him to do here in Hallownest. The next time you head to the blue lake, he's left his nail behind and vanished. This dialogue + what he's said before In the game implies that our favorite boy drowned himself.

I cant think of anything but i will soon. Maybe. That’s pretty dumb-sounding, man. I took it as him simply retiring to a life of peace similar to Sheo. It’s not in his character, his sword next to the lake could mean anything, from what you suggest down to what I suggest (makes sense to me a lifelong warrior, weary from travel and battle, would find a beautiful place to lay down their sword forever and walk away). Don’t be daft. Dark souls community would never go so far as to claim something so brazen on nothing but “well it kinda sorta maybe if you squint hard enough.” Why does that matter? I mean dark souls is a different game, right? Well, we all know (I hope) that this game’s lore design is almost identical to the lore design of dark souls. I think this isn’t just a weak theory, I think it’s a senseless theory with little to no support. So we can tell he’s world-weary and we can tell he’s ready to hang up the sword. How in the hell do people draw a straight line from that, to suicide? Senseless. I’ve beaten the game up to 110%, working on the final 2 pantheons now. I’ve seen the ending of quirrel’s quest and listened to his dialogue. For a guy so full of wonder at the sight of the ancient world he’s in, do you really think that, as soon as he’s done fighting, that he’s just gonna exit stage left like there’s nothing left to see? All we have is who he is as a character, and who he is as a character never suggests suicide. “Well you can never tell in real life, why would you be able to tell in a video game?” Because the people writing it would like to not leave it open to interpretation. Miyazaki wouldn’t leave it open to interpretation whether someone killed themselves. He’d leave the why open, but not the actual act itself.
@@icankickflipok holy shit you fucking went off. the sprite of quirrel's nail is labeled "quirrel_death_nail.png" the devs also said that quirrel's true fate was up to the player's interpretation, and your right we have no direct evidence that he's dead besides the game sprite, also mossbag made a video about quirrel and his "death" if youd like to see. its not definitive that he's dead but its widely accepted as a very likely possibility. respect to you, though, you made good points, and i do agree he does not seem the type of person to kill himself, quirrel might not be dead but we'll never know for sure.

I think the "Light familiar" line refers to how the Hive operated under Vespa's rule, and how similar it is to the way The Radiance controls the bugs of Hallownest: a single queen ruling unopposed over a hivemind of drones. When Vespa passed away, The Radiance swiftly took her place in the minds of her subjects. The drones were used to following orders without question, and so they continued with their usual work, keeping the Hive running as efficiently as they always did. To an outsider like Ellina, they appeared more organized than husks taken over by the infection, and so she concluded they must not infected.
I think this is a pretty reasonable explanation. Thanks for sharing!
@@mossbag69 sorry for being so late, but this theory is also supported by the Hiveblood effect, where the bees won’t attack you if you equip it (unless provoked). So although the Radiance is technically in control they still behave similarly.
@@r.j.tammaro8383 I think the Bees and the Mosskin are somewhat synonymous in that they both show only the barest traces of infection compared to other bugs we see in game, and that's because they still hang on to the hope that their ruler will return to fix everything. This is a false hope of course, but it's a hope that focuses them on other beings and may help to repel some of the Radiance's influence if only a little.
@@themockingdragon135 I know I'm not who you were replying to, but I see 2 problems with that theory. Firstly Unn is still around, although she seems a very passive god compared to the pale king and the radiance. From what I've gathered, she ruled before the pale king was there and kind of disappeared without objection though she is still there. Secondly, from what I've gathered, the infection only started because the bugs resisted the radiance
@@kyrab7914 the second point I don't think I can argue with, especially since I myself have never been certain how the infection would have actually worked on a still alive bug. The first point however you somewhat undermined yourself, if you'll pardon. I never said that Unn was 100% gone like Vespa, but by the time we arrive on scene in the game it's obviously very difficult for her to reach out and fight the Radiance's influence given the Hivemind she's amassed, and Unn was weak beforehand due to the White lady and Pale king taking some of Greenpath. Until we defeat the Radiance or replace the Hollow Knight and destroy/weaken the Radiance Unn is in no good position to help her people, and it's not like she seems to have the drive to either.
Maybe the hive is "unmarred" because they worked with the infection instead of against it.
Theory: you do know the lore better than Cherry themselves and they only gave you the journal early so you could point out contradictions before the wide release

@@mossbag69 would be cool if they added a small update where she appears in game and has some dialog with the knight. Tie in the book etc really well with the rest of the game, and could perhaps let us learn more about her.
@@mossbag69 I think if they were actually infected they wouldn't stop fighting you while you have the hiveblood charm equipped, so maybe they're half-infected, or it was actually supposed to be honey.

This means that she probably bought some of Cornifer's Maps (not that it matter but it's a cool thought) and if the Radience outbreak started recently, it was probably it that made the Knight active, maybe Queen Vespa died during the game time, after Ellina visited and before the Knight arrived.

I think when the book said “unmarred” it meant that the Hive was infected but did not go to ruin like the city of tears. The Hive is still acting like it was never infected because they don’t really have minds of their own and are currently going off of the last orders of Queen Vespa. It also helps that unmarred means to be unaffected physically, not mentally however.

It doesnt say the hive is unaffected, more of the BEES being "unmarred".
IRL, some bees are resistant to certain parasites and diseases that affect other garden bugs.
Also the fact that their society is very integrated and communal anyway may have mean there wasn't a dramatic change it how it was run once it was taken over by a "hive" mind

Marmu was a pet of the white lady, hence why its in the queens garden / acts basically like a big dog / has its own grave site despite not being a warrior, a monk, an idol of worship etc.
Its makes at least some sense, and from the white lady's personality being so soft and gentle, it would make sense for her to have some kind of creature beside her that she watched over and grew with - seemingly while the king was off fucking around making vessels and slam dunking them into the abyss

I think higher beings are gods, like the ones that Godseeker longingly looks towards and tries to tune with in the transitionary stages in the Pantheon of Hallownest gods.
So like, Unn, The Pale King, The White Lady, and all of their direct offspring, so Vessels, the Knight, Pure Vessel/Hollow Knight, Hornet, Lurien, Herrah, and Monomon probably, Vespa maybe, possibly the Weavers, the Seer and the moths, Bardoon perhaps, people like that. These entities have greater power and can be considered higher beings, and can read those higher being tablets. Bottom line is, Marmu is a little bouncing bitch and definitely can't.
Therefore, "only this kingdom could produce ones such as you" means the gods and their offspring. That's how I interpret that.
Makes sense. The "only this kingdom" can be taken with a grain of salt too. The Pale King is a bit entitled to thinking he's the "last and only civilization" when in reality there are many others.

I think when Elina says "unmarred by the infection", she just means that they where undamaged, because they where familiar with the Radiances hive mind.
I think the crystals reflect the light of the radiance, thus making it brighter, making her stronger

i find the most interesting thing is that Nosk disguised itself as a normal Husk to trap Elina
Regarding the Crystal Peak, it's most likely the crystals absorbed her light. It's most likely they took it from the statue of the Radiance, as it seems to be the most likely origin point of the infection. They probably reflected this light into the minds of the miners in the cave, allowing the infection to slowly spread throughout Hallownest.

🐞I know Ellina was travelling at the same time as the Knight, it would be interesting to see her reactions to meeting it or seeing it fight a flying scythe because she can't see the ghosts. I also wonder, did she go to the resting grounds?😅

i’m pretty sure the book says that “the hive were unmarred by the infection” because bees already operate on a hive mind, so when vespa died and the radiance infected them, there wasn’t much change in the bees behaviors

Also I read the whole "only this kingdom could produce one such as you" to refer to the pale king himself, as in he produced the vessels and hornet so they likely could read the messagea
Here’s what I think. By the Hive being “unmarred” could simply mean that it had little effect on the residents. The infection reduces bugs to their instincts. The bees of the hive seem to already be sticking to their instincts as it is: fighting to the death against invaders and welcoming those they deem as friends

Excellent video, Mossbag! I love how thorough you are and I'm so glad you were gifted a book to analyze. Looking forward to your Silksong vids when it's released. I have a thought on the hive contradiction: Perhaps because the infection was somewhat recent, she had visited it just before the infection took hold and didn't see it in its fallen state as we do in-game.
I think the crystals in the peak basically just amplify the power of the infection, since they reflect light.

Ellina might have visited the Hallownest and the Hive before the Knight did. That would be a good explanation if the Hive surrended to infection relatively recently, before the Knight's arrival and after Ellina's visit.
I wonder how did she enter the abyss? If I'm not mistaken, in order to enter you need King's brand to destroy the door. Though I suppose the same question applies to escaped vessels and there is no defenite answer yet (if there is, please correct me), only assumptions.
There're three possibilities:
1. Ellina entered the abyss after The Knight aquired King's brand and destroyed the entrance;
2. There IS a way out we are not aware of and Team Cherry are planning to shed some light (lmao) on how did vessels escape from Abyss;
3. It's Team Cherry's oversight/decision in order to include the Abyss in the book.
However, if Ellina DID entered the Abyss after the Knight, then first paragraph doesn't make sence and vice versa. Also if that's the case, then did Ellina traveled at the same time as the Knight or after one of the endings (which I think is unlikely)? Personaly, I don't think Team Cherry would go this way.
Edit: I saw that Ellina travels at the same time as the Knight. Guess TC did it. :D That explains how she entered the Abyss.

Regarding the lore tablets addressed to "higher beings", I think they are ment for the vessels, because the Hollow Knight (your character) seems like can read it, the knowledge inside of them is important to the Vessels, and the "kingdom could produce ones such as you", because the King made the Vessels.
At the same time though, I think only the Pure Vessel was intended to escape the Abyss at all
At least that's what the Pale King intended.
But maybye, after the Pure Vessel failed and the King vanished, someone pulled some of the still alive vessels out of the abyss and set them up to journey Hallownest, in order to replace the original one.
Aka the next most prominent Higher being in the game, that specifically waits for a vessel to find her, aka the White Lady.
@@fabulousghost7590 I know that the Pure Vessel is the only one, that was accounted to escape the abyss, and also it would be really strange if the Pale King constructed tablets, that are meant for Vessels, while he can just tell the Pure Vessel (because the "Great Knighs didn't knew more Vessels existed). But on the other hand, other Vessels have escaped the Void (the Broken Vessel, the one in Hornet's arena and all of the dead ones in Nosk's arena), which might or might not was known to the Pale King, and also the tablets are on outskirts of Hollownest (Howling Cliffs and bottom of Ancient Basin), so it may have been constructed in secret.
Some additional notes, that one seems like a signpost ("Beyond this point you enter the land of King and Creator."), that is only needed for creatures outside of Hollownest (which means mossbag's theory fails, because bugs inside Hollownest already know they are inside Hollownest, and he implies, that outsiders can't read them), and another one of the tablets tells you about "Focusing", which isn't something other bugs do, but our Vessel can do. The only bugs that seem to do something similar to focusing are the Nailmasters, which is an even wilder theory, but supported by the part "achieve feats of which others can only dream", and if the Nailmasters came from outside the Kingdom, they would require the 'signpost'.
Or Team Cherry just didn't have an idea of how to communicate "Focusing", so they just told the player, and we are meant to be the "Higher Beings", and they are only poking fun at that in the artbook.

16:20 When referring to higher beings being produced by Hallownest, I think the author of the note was just referring to how higher beings are a naturally occurring thing across the world, and that the one Hallownest has created, the character you play as, is strong enough to defeat the radiance, who seems to be a pretty powerful higher being.

@@steelram4098 yes but they were basically too late, because the miners probably found the radiance's statue and began the infection and reached Crystal peak 😭, they probably could have controlled it in the same matter as the radiance! If only they knew how it could conduct spiritual stuff!
Hell, the moths should've just told the Pale King that they made that statue before forgetting everything about the Radiance, and the whole thing could've been avoided. 😔

The reason for the radiance possibly being connected to the crystals could be because of gems refractive index, which is sort of a way of measuring how sparkley a gemstone is. It makes gems look bright and shiny, and while the gems in game are probably just amethyst, which would explain why there's so much of it, she might be able to shine her light more greatly through bugs with those crystals because it refracts light. I think this makes sense, since a lot of the enemies in that area use light as a weapon

Theory: The tablets were final messages for Hornet by the Pale King. First of all, higher beings we've already proven are Wyrm, Root, Light, and a couple other powerful beings. I think it's reasonable to say that the higher beings referred to in the tablets are the same group of beings referred to everywhere else. This means that Ellina wouldn't be able to read them. One character that would be most likely able to read them though in this case is Hornet. Hornet is the daughter of the Pale King, making her part higher being, which would likely be enough. Since the knight can read them, the offspring of higher beings seem to also be somewhat of higher beings. If we look at the dialogue of both the Howling Cliffs and Abyss tablets with the phrase "Higher beings, these words are for you alone", they both sound like messages given as advice. These pieces of advice sound like advice the Pale King would give right before going into hiding, and would be useful to Hornet. They would also tell Hornet some final information that would help her, but would never need to be divulged to her before the destruction cause by the infection. The Kings Pass tablets don't hold up as well to this, but I think the element of being tutorial could be used to exempt them from this. I also see it as possible that these were not written by the same character as the other 2. Possibly it was written by Hornet for Quirrel if she maybe mistook him for a higher being due to Monomon's mask. No evidence for the last part, but just a possible explanation for the tutorial tablets. I think that the idea that these were written specifically for Hornet would make sense though.
I welcome other ideas, and feel free to poke holes in the theory, this was just a sudden revelation I had while watching the video of a possibility.
Edit: After thinking about it, while the tablet about focusing soul still makes no sense to tell Hornet, the other two both have explanations that I somewhat like. First, the one about having others bask in your glory as no other kingdom could produce one as you, I think that makes sense to refer to the princess of Hallownest. The pale king telling Hornet this in the region where travelers would come could act as a reminder. The one about the entrance to the kingdom could allow Hornet to know the border by heart, and the fact that it references the kingdom as great would help this being right as the pale king went into hiding. I personally like this idea more with these ideas. All of these points are things that the white lady wouldn't likely tell to hornet, but would be useful for the pale king to leave as information for her, and it's all written in a way that it seems the Pale King is talking to the reader about the reader and himself, which would fit with his daughter being the target of the messages.
I don't think that higher beings refers to all the creatures of Hallownest. Other lore tablets written by important people of Hallownest are seemingly for everyone in Hallownest, but these tablets stand alone as seeming exclusive to a few people. The knowledge of the abyss is something that the Pale King would want to remain secret, so it wouldn't be to everyone in the kingdom with a lore tablet. It also says "We shall enter that place no longer." The we in that implies that whoever it was directed to has been into the abyss during the vessel creation. If anyone other than the Pale King was there, it's Hornet.
