Assemble it. Run it on the floor. Including a no load WOT to make sure it makes it’s correct no load RPM. It is so much easier to address problems when it’s on the floor in front of you then it is when it’s stuffed down into a bilge.
Kevin Hornbuckle ......... as I saw it when they brought that motor back to the shop the fly wheel and the starter we’re not on it nor was the governor nun of the cooling system was on the block. So one can only assume the builder did not run the engine. I have rebuilt dozens of these 2 stroke Detroit’s!
Two things stood out on this episode ,one ,are you sure that's the same workshop that you had to climb through with a compass and a translator to get to anything ,and two it's so nice to see you've come in from the dark side and are now drinking forex gold and not coopers ,thanks for all the work keeping us entertained ,cheers.
Good luck, may all the bolts fit and torque down first try, may your sockets all fit and new gaskets seal first go and remember its tea before the build and beer after.
Wicked! Really nice looking rebuild. Thanks for taking the time to send out the video. I really enjoy watching your projects come to light.I look forward to seeing your next video. Cheers.
Yahooee half the country is excited about this older noisse diesel engine, looking forward to seeing that working now I will watch the video. Have fun.
Great day for sure Stu, Eddie has never had a bad day while being with you, dogs always make the best out of anything. I know no matter what happens my dog always has a great time. Looking great, best of luck with the installation. Jeff in LA USA
The rebuild ability of real diesels like this ,ford Lehman , Cummings and the like is so different from some modern lighter weight diesels. Looking forward to your build up. Cheers Warren
That is a great paint job. It make all the difference . And it’s amazing they got the colour right and gave you a spare spray can. Now I can back to TV and Watch the movie Australia on 7 fix’s now in Melbourne Australia I just realise that Stu looks like THE DROVER !
There is no doubt that cruising in a sound hull with reliable diesel motor & 'jolly boating weather', makes Jack a happy mariner. Great to see the progress you are making.
We've all been waiting with you , when I saw the title I punched the air and shouted YES before Ive even seen the video. You must have the most genuine follower base of all the youtubers and its because of You !! Cant wait for the next installment.
Hey Stu! I haven’t worked a lot of boat engines I have worked many, many old Detroit’s. Worked on all (27) of the NY City Transit Museum Buses. The engine will run for fifty years or more, just keep the oil clean and the fuel and oil filters changed! Run a water separator on the fuel system.
So nice to have all the parts and pieces back looking new so it's a pleasure to install everything clean so you don't look like someone dragged you through an oil filled bilge at the end of the day.
i'm quite confident that your engine will last you for ever with this rebuild you did, awesome to see the workhorse of a boat come back in such condition, congratulations mate keep it up
Nice all around. I have been watching for quite a while. I have been a Marine mechanic for 30 years in Wisconsin. Nice Video Series and Damn Nice Boat and Engine. Enjoy and Good Karma.
Having a dependable motor you can count on and trust, on the water, and having that peace of mind is worth it's weight in gold...or at least worth the money spent on the rebuild. That being said, lol, always have a tool kit and an extra water pump and prop. The motor looks like new now. Congratulations!
I’m getting excited just looking at it. I remember getting my rebuilt 350 back and was super pumped to put it all together. Right on! Every video is very exciting. Can’t wait to have it drop into the boat and fire that thing up!!!
Living just a couple hours from Detroit and knowing many people who used to work on the factory lines I can tell you that you have one of the best power plants ever to leave the factories. As long as you keep up with basic maintence that thing will run forever!! Detroit Diesels are highly sought after because of their reliabilty. Like you said not cheap but you will have piece of mind when you turn that key that engine is gonna start. Good choice in getting it rebuilt properly. Like I said.....that thing will run forever and likely out live both of us.
Ahh good ‘ol 4-71 driptroit you’ll know she’s broken in when she starts dripping oil in the bilge. All joking aside, now that the green jewel is going back into the case, she’ll take you to San Fran and back a few times before her next overhaul. I have to overhaul a 4-71 here soon that’s sitting in a crusty old Dynahoe backhoe. Looking forward to smelling like diesel and oil for the next month.
Had a 6/71 in a motor grader with a 4 foot long muffler- silent...... 4/71 straight pipe in a Log Skidder that would make your ears ring .... what I love about these engines is the lack of low end power .... breaks less parts
The most critical part after assembly is to make sure you have FULL travel on the rack for injectors, make sure it goes to fully NO fuel position and also FULL rack position and that you have control from governor assembly, remove valve cover for 1st start, may want to put vice grips on rack tube until you have made sure shut down works , set idle and set top speed (rpm) . If governor and rack not correct, will lose engine in seconds
It might have been expensive Stu but there is nothing as good as a piece of mind as you head out onto the water! Can't wait to hear it roar to life, good job Stu!
I love that Detroit Leaker green paint! The 71-series, IMO, are the best engines ever made, aside from maybe the Cat 3406. When I first joined the Army, they still had a vehicle called the Gama Goat, and it had a Detroit 3-53....near-indestructible torque monsters. You could hear them coming a mile away, but that sound was always music to my ears. I can't wait to see yours in her rightful place, Stu. BTW, how did you like America? You look like you had fun driving Scott's Silversides.
Stu, one thing to watch for when you plumb in the fuel lines to the head. There MUST be a restrictive fitting in the return line. It will be stamped R**.A fairly common one would be R80. If that little detail is missed, the engine will run like crap due to lack of fuel pressure in the head. The fuel pressure usually runs between 40 and 60 PSI. A lot of times people put a pressure gauge on the outlet side of the secondary fuel filter. That is a good way to easily tell the health of the filters.
Thanks mate, I did notice a fitting in line on the return hose. I'll replace it with new to be safe given they are cheap. I would be good to install a sensor there too.
Eels Fans...nothing at all. I like em before watching them too cuz I always know Stu's vids rock! Engine looks great. Hope it runs just as great. Can't wait to see the reassemble/reinstall vids. Thanks again for another awesome vid. See ya in the next one.
The Green Leaker returns! And they don't call them Driptroit Diesels for nothing. Like Bus Grease Monkey says " If you hung a picture of one on the wall there would be a puddle of oil underneath". On a more positive note, they do use two stroke diesels in the largest supertankers and mega container ships.
Love the re-purposed beer barrels. The Bus Grease Monkey on YT is an authority on older Detroit diesels. I'm sure you could find something useful on his channel. Best of luck with putting it together. Thanks for the video.
2:22 mark... I don't know what to be more excited about... the Detroit Diesel looking awesome and ready to go...or that bad-@ss SBC with aluminum heads sitting next to it. I think Stu should grab that one up too and use it as an emergency wing engine or build a new dingy to drop it in to!
Stuey Stuey Stuey! Great news! That engine looks sweet, those guys have a great job of things by the looks of it and the fella with the gear box, can’t wait for the next vid mate I think you’ve earned yourself a coopers..... or two🍻 really good to see it back in the shop. It’s funny how you get that feel good feeling from things your doing on the other side of the world👍🏴
You may have to invest in one of those animal enclosure with nice soft foam inside to look after the cargo and a good quality lock on the door for safety. Worst case would to be also attach GPS tracking if box accidently drops of a boat or stolen? This way your BEER will always be save and your relationship issue with Edd, "The other third, not half?" will be more pleasant in the future?
I'm sure that by now, someone will have called to offer help Stu. Assuming, of course, all the beer is now stored above Eddie. Just be careful to only say yes to ONE of them. Retired Detroit mechanics do love beer.
Served my apprenticeship on Detroits ,even EMD's but also a lot of other Diesels ,many of which are now just museum pieces > it's a pity i'm tied up and too far away as it would be interesting to see it installed and running.
I would love to work on one of these even though I know very little about them. I started watching your videos soon after I bought my first boat with a non-running motor that was also missing the harness for the power trim (your video on them helped sort that out and was the first one I watched). After working on the outboard with very, very little experience with engines and not just getting it working, but getting it working great(I enjoy messing with it to get peak performance), I found the experience very rewarding and bought a second boat with a non-functioning outboard and got that one working again too. Now I'm looking at buying a 28 footer with an stern drive (or maybe the other one I saw with the dual engines) that's not working and am looking forward to getting to know that engine! So start making more videos on them because I'm probably going to need the help!
Just remember to have a piece of plywood around to block off the air intake incase it runs off on initial start, and any other time it might as well! I don't think you'll have any problems putting it together, I've seen you put some stuff a bit more complicated than an old 2 stroke Detroit!
Assemble it. Run it on the floor. Including a no load WOT to make sure it makes it’s correct no load RPM. It is so much easier to address problems when it’s on the floor in front of you then it is when it’s stuffed down into a bilge.
Frank Kreyssig Did the builder already do a run-in?
Kevin Hornbuckle ......... as I saw it when they brought that motor back to the shop the fly wheel and the starter we’re not on it nor was the governor nun of the cooling system was on the block. So one can only assume the builder did not run the engine. I have rebuilt dozens of these 2 stroke Detroit’s!
Yes, will definitely run it in the shop and yes CDA did not run it because it isn't assembled enough yet to start.
Much more rewarding than just buying a new out the crate lump. Old oiler back in the world of the living. Love it!!
Thanks for the reply, cheers!
I’m so excited for you! Can’t wait to see you put that back in and the adventures begin.
Congratulations, that is major step forward, your hard work is starting to pay off
Good luck, may all the bolts fit and torque down first try, may your sockets all fit and new gaskets seal first go and remember its tea before the build and beer after.
Thanks mate! :)
Have fun.
Half the world...!
Awesome, you going to have a very dependable boat
Yes, reliability is very important to me for the offshore trips.
You're right, it is never cheap to do the job right but it is worth it.
Congrats Stu, the Green Monster has returned!!!!! Thats gonna make a fine engine for the boat that you will get many years of service out of!!!!
Great job on the restoration of the trawler , keep up the good fight soon you'll be flying across the waves !
Thanks Greg!
That is a great paint job. It make all the difference . And it’s amazing they got the colour right and gave you a spare spray can.
Now I can back to TV and Watch the movie Australia on 7 fix’s now in Melbourne Australia
I just realise that Stu looks like THE DROVER !
Thanks mate. I actually gave them a box of paint cans then took the leftover ones back. Now to paint the gearbox!
When you have a Detroit 2 stroke you have the sound that lets people know, you have a Detroit 2 stroke! It's the best.
Yep it's right there with two 454's and no lift muffler's !
They roar with the sound like if you shoved a boiling hot
Potato up a T-rex's ass!!!
Takes fuel and turns it into noise lol

Sweet-There is no better feeling then getting your motor back knowing that it was done correctly!
For sure, it is going to be nice to be able to trust it.
Eddy is a show stealer...
The 4/71 is good too !
I am a old Detroit mechanic and you did reel good.
You have a lot of work ahead of you I will be praying for you
New question to ask ever video!
When's it going in the boat?
It's not going in the boat, I don't want to get it dirty. ;)
@ Dangar Marine ; Rolling on the floor and laughing my ass off at this moment...
@@DangarMarine Next video, how to turn a Detroit diesel into a coffee table.
@@DangarMarine and ur boat looks pretty also!
Haha I was about to ask that! :)
So nice to have all the parts and pieces back looking new so it's a pleasure to install everything clean so you don't look like someone dragged you through an oil filled bilge at the end of the day.
The Detroit looks beautiful!!
Thanks mate.
Great to see that the engine is back.
i'm quite confident that your engine will last you for ever with this rebuild you did, awesome to see the workhorse of a boat come back in such condition, congratulations mate keep it up
Thanks mate. I think it will give me many years of reliable service.
Something about the old motors that have a real romance about them .
Thank God it’s back. Wish I knew a bit more about Detroits, I’d hop a plane and be down there to help today.
Nice all around. I have been watching for quite a while. I have been a Marine mechanic for 30 years in Wisconsin. Nice Video Series and Damn Nice Boat and Engine. Enjoy and Good Karma.
Really pleased to see the 4-71 back again! Looking beautiful in a fresh coat of alpine green. Remember low ash SAE 40 only, no 15w40 please!
Being back in the shop....seems just like old times!
Congratulations my friend 👍🏾
It’s going to be nice for you guys to have a newly rebuilt engine and gearbox. It’ll be piece of mind while under way. Nice work by the machine shop!
Having a dependable motor you can count on and trust, on the water, and having that peace of mind is worth it's weight in gold...or at least worth the money spent on the rebuild. That being said, lol, always have a tool kit and an extra water pump and prop. The motor looks like new now. Congratulations!
Take your time and be safe !! Stay proud! You've done so much and done it well! Carry on...
Great Stu. Coming together nicely.
there is just something about a freshly rebuilt engine with new paint that makes a guy's heart sing... That 4-71 is a beauty...!
I’m getting excited just looking at it. I remember getting my rebuilt 350 back and was super pumped to put it all together. Right on! Every video is very exciting. Can’t wait to have it drop into the boat and fire that thing up!!!

The diesel and the old shop returns! Love it.
Excellent Stu, Glad the engine is back and looking great.
Looking good from here in the USA....
Looks great, looks new!
Congrats getting the motor back. Looks great!

Looking good Stu! Shame about the beer, my condolences to you and your shop mates.
Great as usual. I very much appreciate these videos.
Thanks Andrew.
Hey mate glad to see you are making headway. Hope Eddie feels better soon.
I was trained on GM 671 2 stroke Diesel engines, and also worked on the 4 cylinder versions. Wish I had one in my boat
If you have the Detroit diesel manuals, you will be fine! Looking good!
old boats with milk crate seats, and beer keg gas tanks. Reminds me of my old home on Oneida Lake in New York State USA.
Had a 6/71 in a motor grader with a 4 foot long muffler- silent...... 4/71 straight pipe in a Log Skidder that would make your ears ring .... what I love about these engines is the lack of low end power .... breaks less parts
Bus Grease Monkey would be drooling to play with that clean slate motor. Looking good Stu
i especially like the milk-crate boat seats with the cushions. deluxe edition for sure!
Yes, the deluxe versions come with cushions. ;)
So excited for you Stu! Its a great step towards the next set of adventures! Sorry to hear about the beer!

Wow! Love how Eddie doesn’t break step as he runs onto the boat.
He's always first in. :)
It might have been expensive Stu but there is nothing as good as a piece of mind as you head out onto the water! Can't wait to hear it roar to life, good job Stu!
For sure, reliability on the water is essential.

Wow that engine certainly looks the part!

There is doing it cheap and then there is doing it right! 100 miles off shore with reefs you want it done right!! Hang in there! It will be great!
Yes, I couldn't agree more. I really wanted to have a lot of faith in this engine and I certainly do now.
Congratulations and it looks good
not the cheapest thing to rebuild but all that work will pay off in reliability for sure I reckon mate.
Yep totally agree
I'm sure that by now, someone will have called to offer help Stu. Assuming, of course, all the beer is now stored above Eddie. Just be careful to only say yes to ONE of them. Retired Detroit mechanics do love beer.
Exciting! The engine is looking awesome already! Looking forward seeing you working on it. Sweet!
It looks really good, can’t wait to see it installed and running.
Looking forward to the continuing series!
XXXX Gold? Eddy, you hit the nail on the head!
Now, where's the real beer?
PS, the Detroit looks fantastic!
Oh, nice. Can't wait to see it all come together!
Fantastic!! Looking forward to seeing installed and running now.
Cant wait to hear it run.
4X - good job eddy
Served my apprenticeship on Detroits ,even EMD's but also a lot of other Diesels ,many of which are now just museum pieces > it's a pity i'm tied up and too far away as it would be interesting to see it installed and running.
DD puke green ! Love that color !
Cool to see the Detroit back...Good luck putting it all back together Stu :-) I like boats, but haven't got a clue about engines, lol
That engine is pretty!
6-71 loud as the devil but still a thing of beauty.
I would love to work on one of these even though I know very little about them.

Great to see you've got the bug. :)
Nice engine. It looks amazing with the paint job. And the valves! Will we get a look up under the sump?..... oh...... whens it going in?
Not planning to take the sump off now it is sealed up unfortunately.
That's Pontiac blue. Nice color
Got to get BGM to come over the pond to get it running once you get it installed.
That would be fun!
Just remember to have a piece of plywood around to block off the air intake incase it runs off on initial start, and any other time it might as well! I don't think you'll have any problems putting it together, I've seen you put some stuff a bit more complicated than an old 2 stroke Detroit!
