Why does the United States get so many tornadoes?

- The United States gets more tornadoes than any other country in the world. It gets more than 20x the number of tornadoes than the second place country! Why is that? What makes the US so unique that tornadoes are so prominent there?

Tornados are VERY common in Florida, it's one of the top tornado states. A weak EF0 tornado went directly over my house in June 2015 and in the early 2000s an EF2 tornado destroyed an apartment complex around 2 am a mile from my house. It became the deadliest tornado in Florida's history.
Fortunately, most of those tornadoes are relatively weak and mostly spawn from hurricanes

I live in Alabama and I've seen 3 tornadoes so far in my life. One of them was the EF4 tornado that hit Enterprise High School back in 2007 and killed a few students... Also one of the tornadoes I saw was at night time and you could only see it when the lightning flashed.
i lived in philippines. And just like on united states every day or every week we have a tornado.our tornado is rich in strong inflow.

Down here in Aussie we had a tornado a couple of years ago, 2012, it's was in June, where this Tropical Low from the tropics collided with a strong cold front, therefore fuelled into Severe Thunderstorms and spawned a tornado (amazingly during winter) not far from my actual house, it was an EF2 strength Tornado.
May 11th 1970 the day after Mother's Day around 9:15 I think we had two F5 tornadoes hit Lubbock Texas it destroyed our home with us inside the house it picked up the house shook it broke it all up. Now that I'm an adult I have outran three tornadoes in my car one tornado in Texas City one in Houston one in La Mesa Texas. The one in La Mesa Texas I could see it through my rearview mirror it was red because it lifted a lot of sand there's a lot of sand in West Texas it was a huge monster but I made it to shelter I got to the police department and took shelter. In Texas City I was on the interstate I'm going to Houston when I saw the wall cloud and the funnel come out then it turned to a full-blown tornado it was about a mile away traveling in the same direction very scary. Also in Lubbock Texas when I was a kid we used to work in the cotton fields twice we saw one in the air way up in the air just traveling. For anyone that has not seen one or experienced one I hope you never do!!!

I never had a tornado but one time, about 4 or 5 years ago, there was this really bad storm and it basically ripped part of my roof off and uprooted some trees. I know it wasnt a tornado because if it was, they would've said it was a tornado warning and not a watch.

Pretty Tomboy It's good you were in the basement. I don't want to seem pedantic here, but I think this is also good to know. It is possible for a tornado to not form a condensation funnel (a funnel cloud), and sometimes a tornado can be wrapped in rain and not be able to be seen. Just because can't see a tornado does not necessarily mean there isn't one. And may I ask how you could tell there was no funnel cloud when you were in the basement?

You do not want to experience one at all. An EF5 can completely lift a house off it's foundation. But they do give people a chance to view them up close in the spring out in tornado alley. Some tornado chasers take a few people with them to experience chasing, but it's very expensive and dangerous.
From NJ and still waiting for a tornado. While in college in mid PA my soccer team was hit with golf ball sized hail during practice, but no tornado with it. I did see one while on a family vacation passing through Kansas. That was way before all the chasers. It was tall but pretty skinny and probably an EF0 in the middle of a farm field along the highway.

Do you have a video that explains twin tornadoes? I've seen them happen in Nashville and in a small community in the western part of Lawrence County TN. I have been told that Summertown in Lawrence County has a lot of tornadoes especially compared to the rest of TN. I'm curious about the twin tornadoes and why summertown seems to get more of them compared with the other areas in TN.

I am from Oklahoma, "tornado alley." My family and I have weathered many of them and when it was safe, we got in the car and drove around to the areas where it hit. Those places that we're damaged became something else later on
I've never seen a tornado in person but I've seen the damage from one the day after it happened.
The dangerous part about the EF scale is that it measures damage rather than wind speeds. You can have 200+ mph wind, mile wide tornado but it'll be rated an EF0 or EF1 because it was only ever in an open field where it couldn't hurt anyone.

Its like a big cloud with rotating winds that can blow up everything. It feels like to be out of a flying Boeing 747 with a rope attached to you. All that fast wind that make you feel uncomfortable and scared because you are thinking if your rope is going to cut off or not.
Tornadoes, if they are powerful enough, can be pared with lightning, heavy rain fall, and golf ball sized hail. I live in Alberta where we get a few tornadoes. luckily I've only ever seen a funnel cloud. Though I have seen the after math of the hail storms they are part of.
I think I've lived in a tornado when I was 5 years old. I was at school, then something went off. I think it was the tornado siren. We did take shelter. Where I live in Canada I've seen two funnel clouds (one over my house the other really close) but I've never been in a tornado thank god they are my worst fear.

Bradley Agulis I live in Finland and heres only 14 tornadoes per year on average and i have dreamed to see a tornado or even a funnel cloud. The most destructive tornado here was on 1934 and it was F-4 and also they have reported 6 F-3s.

I saw in a website here in Brazil and I saw that the second biggest tornado alley in the world is located in South and Southeast of Brazil, but the problem is, we don't have a good system of weather warnings and to get worse, the firefighters and the press are recommended by the governanment and the metereologycs institutes to say that nothing happend. in 2013 have a Tornado in Taquarituba and in 2016 in São Miguel Arcanjo, near where I live and no warnings were announced as always. in this part of Brazil it´s comun to have havy storms with floods and a lot and lightning and to contribute the government turns off 13 radars. Come URGENTLY to Brazil! please?

i was in Zürich switzerland when a supercell formed after an intense hot day of 40C average and then it got really quickly really ugly it went over water but changed to a landspout afterwards didnt did much damage becouse houses are made of beton & stones plus steel so wasnt much hype around it :P

JayJay Studios You’re lucky then! I live in Tornado Alley (the area where they mostly occur in) and they have to put up tornado sirens, alerts on TVs (television) radios, and they even require our schools to conduct tornado drills.
Unfortunantly tornados are catagorized on the EF rating by how much damage and what kind of damage they do. Take a F-5 Tornado and throw it in the middle of nowhere where all it does is make a scar on the ground and destroys no buildings, it'll be put in the EF-1 EF-0 category so in essence EF-0 and 1 can be misleading
