Nuking Hurricanes? - Can a bomb be the solution to a natural disaster?

  • Would dropping a nuclear bomb on a hurricane stop it from forming or hitting the United States?
    After hearing the suggestion through our comments, and echoed on many corners of the internet - Storm Shield meteorologist Jason Meyers looks at the science behind nuclear bombing a hurricane.
    Nuking a hurricane - would it really work to control the weather?

    I know of at least one incident in which a large blast collided with a tropical cyclone. Mount Pinatubo erupted back in the early 1990s, and the most powerful part of the eruption coincided with a typhoon that had wandered into the area. I don't recall what happened to the typhoon, but the ground result was a ton of muddy lahars- water/Ash/rock flows that bury places deep in dirt.

    • @Rickyrab
      @Rickyrab 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The typhoon's name was Yunya, it turns out, and it was already getting weaker due to wind shear when it ran into the eruption. The thing turned into a tropical storm by the time Pinatubo chucked the proverbial shit into the proverbial fan. Yunya apparently turned North and kept weakening.

    Great opportunity to test the effects of the fuel air bomb otherwise known as M.O.A.B. which is none nuclear but has the same blast radius. Also bigger nukes have less radiation because the radioactive particles leaves the atmosphere.

    This may sound crazy but in 1970 we had hurricane Celia. I was living in Corpus Christi at the time.
    The wind blows about 40 miles per hour there most of the time and if the wind get up to 70~90 miles per hour that wouldn't be much different.
    I remember the company let us go home at 12:00 noon. I drove down Ocean Drive to my cousin's house to ride out the storm. I remember seeing some white caps on the water but nothing looked any different than any other day. The weather department said it would hit about 4:00PM.
    I also heard on the AM radio that the weather department was going to drop silver iodide crystals in the storm in hopes to make it rain out or kill the hurricane.
    Between 12:00 to 4:30 all hell broke out. The wind gust got up to 160 MPH. It blew the water tower down in Portland, TX and blew the weather equipment at one of the refinery. Their last reading was 165 mph.
    Not another word was said about the weather bureau trying to kill that storm. About 10 years later when I moved to Houston I talked to another ham radio operator that lived in Corpus at that time and heard the same story. Since then I have heard another person verifying the same thing.

    This showed up in my recommended vids and I actually thought about this during Matthew, prepare for a simple way explaining what will happen, if a nuke was detonated in the eye of it the hurricane would be blown to pieces by the force from the blast, but the down side is it will fill the clouds with radioactive dust and then that would become a serious problem, not only that but that would probably screw up part of Earth's orbit due to the nuke being detonated so high up.

    • @lukebonini7756
      @lukebonini7756 6 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @johnhubert835
    @johnhubert835 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think the idea more relies on the shock of the explosion disrupting the eye wall and perhaps destroying the Hurricane that way. Also the intense heat of the nuclear explosion would reverse the flow of heat from the ocean to the upper levels of the hurricane, until the the temperature in the area equalized, further disrupting the hurricane.
    I'm not saying that it's a great idea, because of the fall out. I not 100% sure but I think the idea was dismissed off hand not considering how much damage things like the pressure wave, blast wave and incredible heat a multi megaton nuclear weapon would give off and how those things would effect the hurricane and the way it normally functions.

    Making a huge floating platform about 10-15miles in diameter and then putting it in the path of the hurricane. It should atleast reduce the category

    What About Huge Dry Ice Bombs

    • @khman1983
      @khman1983 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would take an entire fleet of the largest airplanes and a few million tons of dry ice to make any reasonable difference in the water temperature. Consider also that some of these large hurricanes cover hundreds of miles in diameter and there is no way to drop enough of anything to affect the water temperature.

      @@khman1983 What about liquid nitrogen bombs? Supposing we can make them a reasonable size. They're fairly simple to make by mixing with dynamite, so theoretically it can be done.

    What is a tornado insade

  • @TheZombiesAreComing
    @TheZombiesAreComing 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why are people obsessed with bombing tornados? Tornados form because of hot air trying to rise through cold air while being wrapped up by strong wings, if anything bombs would make it worse via the heat they would generate.
    To solve the problem the temperature in the area needs to be equalized (to stop the rising of hot air and sinking of cold air) or create a large enough distortion in the torado to allow all the hot air to rise without generating more heat in the process. Wind is a result same process that makes tornadoes (hot and cold air), but when a strong air current gets caught up in the process, a tornado forms. That's how I see it at least

    I have an idea. How about liquid nitrogen? What if they release liquid nitrogen by putting some sort of a release mechanism that releases tons of liquid nitrogen right in to the center of the eye of the hurricane? liquid nitrogen is extremely cold. Would this be a way to make a hurricane weaker?

    Better plan.
    1) build houses that can withstand hurricanes.
    2) build hurricane hotels across the country. These buildings can be used for conventions when there are no hurricanes to maintain their condition. Scatter them accross the country, yes even in main. If we scatter the refugees its easier to make sure they are well taken care of, and it wont clog up traffic this way.
    3) Evacuate the premises making sure that everybody gets transportation out of the hurricane zones. Treat it like its the next hurricane Katrina.
    4) Wait it out, watch it on the news, and return home.
    5) have some structurally sound buildings designed as hurricane shelters in the hurricane zones, to catch the morons who choose to stay behind.
    note: we should also have temporary shelters for pets, that way the owners don't have to abandon. They can just pick them up when the hurricane is over, safe and sound. :3
    With the more structurally sound buildings we will have minimal damage. With the mandatory evacuations we will have minimum lives lost. And scattering it across the country ensures we don't put too much burden in one area of the country. Instead we can scatter them across the country.
