I think Grace misunderstood something: Carol didn't destroy the Hala Sun. It got depleted in the 30 years of Kree civil war, as was Hala itself. So the problem was that the supreme intelligence was the only thing keeping the Kree united and in some Way suppressed and without it they've gone postapocalytic

65% of the audience on opening weekend was male.
    Women aren’t supporting this film.
Word of mouth has already killed it. Tracking below the Flash. It’s dead, Jim.
EDIT: It is now official - it’s the lowest opening weekend gross for a MCU film.
    1. The Marvels: $47 million (may come in a tad higher or lower but that seems to be about where it’s gonna land)
    2. Incredible Hulk: $55.4 million
    3. Ant-Man: $57.2 million
    4. Captain America 1: $65.1 million
    5. Thor: $65.7 million
    6. Eternals: $71.3 million
*Keep in mind, adjusted for inflation/increasing ticket prices…the 2008 Incredible Hulk would have right around a $100 million opening weekend. In fact, all of the films on this list with the exception of 2021’s Eternals would have much higher openings when taking inflation into account.
Which further drives home just how big of a disaster The Marvels truly is.

The motivations for each character made sense. Carol saying that she had people to help and Monica saying that they needed her help. And Carol saying she didn’t want to return until she fixed things. Those resonated really well
The music, set piece action sequences. All really fun. Glad I went to the movies. Went to Disney Springs. Saw it in Spanish subtitles with bf. Walked to Marvel store. They have a really nice Captain Marvel hat. Most people went to the Iron Man and Spider-Man stuff. And they have a lot of Black Panther stuff that’s very nice.

It isn't meant to be Endgame or Infinity War
After films like Oppebheimer and Killers of the flower moon this was a breath of fresh air and was one of the few marvel films in recent times I actually felt emotion from watching
Yes they could have lingered on certain emotional scenes longer and maybe added a detailed backstory for Dar Ben

They're trying to connect more parts at the same time, and yet all feel loose and less coherent.

Had a great time. A real fun film that deserves some love. The whole training to use their switching was so smart and fun at the same time. Loved the Valkyrie cameo and the nod to the art of the two shipping.
The destruction of the Supreme Intelligence is a call back to Carol's war, both with the DI and the Brood Queens in the comics (she did destroy the Brood homeworld). Also I loved that they also showed her ability to heal a star as she has done twice in the comics.
While she had no idea that the destruction of the SI would start a religious civil war she accepts that its her fault for just jumping in without really understanding what the SI was doing as the leader of the Kree Empire.

I was not planning to see The Marvels, but after watching your non-spoiler and spoiler reviews, I decided to check it out. I thought it was an enjoyable time! It was by no means a masterpiece, but I did not feel like I wasted my money. The action was surprisingly strong as you said, and it was very funny! The only thing I didn’t like was the singing planet. I thought it worked at first, but as soon as Carol’s dress materialized and she started singing, I was over it. But I think the people that are complaining about the feminism in this movie are ridiculous. It was not heavy-handed at all. In fact, I would say the only thing feminist about this movie is that it happens to star three women in the lead roles. There was no point in the movie where I was keenly aware that I was watching a team of women. To me, I was just watching a team of super heroes. Now, this is coming from a gay man, but I don’t think that really matters at all, because unlike straight men, I was not represented in the movie at all (which is totally fine with me, I don’t have to be represented everywhere).

The Marvels was a good film. It knew what story it wanted to tell, it understood its soul, and every component felt balanced, if not as fleshed out as it could've been. But most of its depth came from the sincerity of the storytelling, the sense that every plot point, characterisation and scene knew where it was coming from and where it was going. This was a very well directed film, the interactions between the core cast believable and compelling. It had heart. A whole heart.
It's so sad that high expectations and toxic perspectives got in the way of people just appreciating this film for what it was.

I actually really loved The Marvels! It was such a good time at the movies and it just disappoints me that people want nothing more than to see this movie crash and burn…

This movie was not bad at all! I enjoyed it so much, with some caveat. The quirks they put in were charming. The foght scenes were quite well-realized in staging and execution. The stories seems to have been cut short, which you can feel, but overall, it's on par with some of the other sequels, like Ant Man 2 and Iron Man 2.

It’s actually a good movie. I enjoyed it. I think people are nitpicking at this point when it comes to Marvel. Yes a few silly moments but the silliness works.

Seeing all those skrulls die actually brought a single tear to my eye. Which is CRAZY for this movie that everyone thought was going to be bad. I think this might make top 10 Marvel movies for me

Look, my problem with Captain Marvel being so crazy strong is they deposed every other hero/villain compared to their comic counterparts, but then they don’t just make CM as powerful, they go crazy and make her stronger. So far they’ve only done this with Wanda and CM, who both have one thing in common that’s pretty obvious. It comes off as very agenda driven.

It is, notice they stay away from introducing stronger characters in the MCU. If they are male they are heavily nerfed I don’t know why either. They even admitted it during an interview with Rooso’s.

I loveeeed this movie so much. I just got home after seeing it with my friend. Also the part where the khan family house was destroyed reminded me a lot of Blue Beetle. A lot of moments in this movie reminded me of blue beetle tbh but I guess that's why I love this movie so much.

Grace I’d be so interested in your thoughts on at what stage does losing money make Marvel change tact and stop making movies the majority don’t want to see?
Or do you think there’s an expectation that if marvel keeps making the movies they want the audience will come around?

Let’s keep it 100. People only care about Captain Marvel, is because Mar-Vell died from cancer. Then, despite no version of this character has really connected with audiences, Marvel is going to continue cranking out content just to keep the name. At least that’s what it feels like.

I did not realize how difficult it would be to find another female led movie review on TH-cam but finally found one this morning. Interestingly she didn’t really like the movie either but her reasoning was curious and possibly explained why Grace loves the movies when others do not. I am in the watching this so I don’t have to see the movie camp but honestly based on your description I will probably like it.
Okay with Carol being “all powerful” but make it make sense. She can destroy a sun but can’t fly very fast? Endgame all over again when Thanos threw his sword faster than she was flying. Her power should be able to propel her incredibly quickly. Also I still want Binary… and honestly a limit. The lack of “earning” statement probably due to it never shows her learning about a her power and it’s limits (if there are any). She just emerges fully realized. Even Thor who was raised a God had to learn about his abilities.
Does Carol really have a “military” background? They went out of their way in the first movie to say they would only let her be a test pilot so exactly how did she get real world combat experience? During her time with the Kree?
Looking forward to it being on iTunes or Disney+ so I can watch it.

Maybe you should focus on your own review and not always bringing up what "haters" say. Maybe just maybe we don't want any more toxic reviewers..

for someone who’s expectations were dirt low, i was severely underwhelmed watching this movie lmao, at least it was better than Ant-Man Quantumania tho !

Two half-hour reviews of this movie and not one mention about how the villain's plot is a ripoff of friggin' Spaceballs of all things?
