    Wondering how far I got on a single 500Wh battery? 42 miles. I had it in 35% Eco assistance for most of the ride. Was too much for the flat sections, could have easily dialled it down to 15%-20% and got around 50 miles out of the battery.
    Strava route we took: / strava
    Had a second that fits in an EVOC Trail E-Ride backpack (only just, with the rock guard removed!).

    You laid out all the good reasons to buy an e-bike. I found myself riding more frequently, farther and getting into shape with a smile. No muscle soreness, no knee pain, no stiffness the next day. Just fun!

      @ruirodtube how is it going with your training, you in shape now? Did you just lose weight because you went out biking a lot more frequently or because you rode some trails and it is not that easy to balance the weight of the bike?

    I get why you are worried about what people think and you kept saying you are cheating. But I don’t think you are cheating since this is just a group ride. It didn’t seem like a race. Also you said you wouldn’t do this on your normal bike. I think that is the big advantage of ebikes. You get to have this awesome adventure but don’t have to kill your self or sacrifice time away from your family to train as much. Great video. You are really making me want an ebike.

    Great video Rob.
    Can I just suggest, whenever you're giving the mileage you got from a battery, mileage is almost meaningless without elevation. Elevation gain is what really hammers a battery, that and if you're above average weight, so also a mention of your weight with your riding kit at start of a video like this which is sort of a range test.
    Apart from that well done with your channel Rob.

    I'm currently riding the 2019 levo hardtail, and I love it.
    I would reccomend anybody looking to buy a emtb, to take a look at the hardtail models.
    I payed £2250, and it looks a million dollars to.

    Loved the test
    My Focus Jam 2 achieves approx 40 miles on its smaller battery however must admit this is over 2/3 rides . No huge hills and a 65kg rider .
    Strangely I rather like to have a a little motor noise especially when pushing hard .
    Keep up the good work and have fun.

      Included some hills but no Boost mode. My rides are getting longer so I may soon need a TEC pack.

    Can’t understand why I didn’t say thanks to all , as I have heart problems my self having suffered two consecutive heart attacks 18 months ago, and had stent fitted to one of my heart valves and tablets for life , I’ve thought about doing this ride on my mountain bike this yr, but don’t think I could do the distance, so when I’ve saved enough money on my part time job , to buy a half decent e bike will take part ,,, so here comes in possibly 2022, if I’m still in the land of the living ,,once again thanks to all who took part , seen this video twice now good stuff Shane uk 🇬🇧

    What an awesome video Rob :) It was watching some of your videos that persuaded me to buy an ebike (2019 Cube Stereo hybrid 160 action team). I hadn't been out on my normal mountain bike for about 2 years up until that point but the ebike has rekindled my passion as I can enjoy riding without being completely destroyed in the first 20 minutes. I've had the bike a month now, already covered 154 miles (I only get time to go out once at the weekend each week) and my fitness is so much better now. As far as range goes my max is 28 miles however as my fitness increases so does my range as I'm using Eco mode more and more (this week I did 26 miles and still had 40% battery left).

    • @RobRidesEMTB
      @RobRidesEMTB  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's awesome to head Aaron, thanks for your feedback. So good that you are getting out more, that's totally what these bikes are made for. I love getting outside and these bikes are so motivating. By the way, are you local to Camberley by any chance? I saw someone riding this exact bike yesterday I think, they look stunning.

    • @aaronhowe3523

      That could well have been me as I was riding around Swinley yesterday and I ride there from Farnborough which takes me over the meadows and up London road to get there and back. You could tell if it was me as I was wearing bright yellow gloves and yellow/black nukeproof jersey.

    • @RobRidesEMTB

      @aaronhowe3523 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah i'd definitely be up for that 👍 although not sure i'd be ready for a 75 mile trip just yet 😁. Well done going that far as i know that even with assistance that still takes a hell of a lot of effort. I don't know about you but i find its my hands/wrists that are my main limit now which is weird.

  • @johnlambert1744
    @johnlambert1744 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    My first long ride on my 2017 Levo (with the 504Wh battery) was 64km mostly in Eco at 30% and I had about 3% battery left at the end. It was on a rail trail so mostly loose gravel. So that pretty much marries up to your first battery on this ride. You can definitely notice the noisier motor too! But I think the new 2019 Levo looks like an amazing bike, so that wouldn't worry me. Great job Rob - especially enduring that English weather lol

    • @RobRidesEMTB
      @RobRidesEMTB  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks John. I want to play around with the assistance settings, 35% Eco is way too much. Weather was nasty at the end of the ride, cold and soaking wet! Typical British weather though so I should be used to it by now!

    • @johnlambert1744
      @johnlambert1744 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @alieninsurgent Yep the speed limit was actually taken off by the bike shop before I picked the bike up! At the time I didnt realise it would void warranty either, but it's still going ok 18 months later. I have had problems with the motor a few times with it feeling sticky, but it seems to free itself up.

    Hey Rob, the motor being that loud is a problem they are having with a series of motors, the one i test rode a month ago did not make any more noise than a 2018 motor.
    So go check that at your bikeshop, they will have more info on it ;)

    • @RobRidesEMTB
      @RobRidesEMTB  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Ryan, sure, seems some are louder than others. As far as I’m aware Specialized know that there are a few with noisier motors. I’ll wait and see what happens 👍

    Thanks for the great real life test! Most people can't aford the 700w battery, and it's heavyer. I have a hard time choosing btw Kenevo comp & the cheapest Levo 2019. 😁

    • @RobRidesEMTB
      @RobRidesEMTB  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Stian, you cant go wrong with either of the bikes they are both great. Kenevo for more DH and bigger terrain but Levo for trail and 'regular' riding. Cheers,

    No ebike hater but EUC unicycles are cheaper, stronger motors, more Wh, much quieter, better climbing abilities and some do twice to three times the range that most bikers and ebikers do daily or in the weekend :
    1) Kingsong KS-18XL : 2500 dollars / 35 degree (70%) hill climb / 100 km range / 25 to 50 kmh speed / 1554Wh motor with 2000W normal to 4000W peak
    2) Kingsong KS-18L : 2000 dollars / 35 degree (70%) hill climb / 105 km range / 25 to 50 kmh speed / 1036Wh
    3) Inmotiion V10F : 1700 dollars / 30 degree (57%) hill climb / 90 km range / 25 to 40 kmh speed / IP55 norm / over 900 Wh
    4) Ninebot Z10 : 1999 dollars / 25 degree hill / 90 km range / 25 to 45 kmh speed / IP54 / 840Wh
    5) Gotway Monster 22 V100 : 2900 dollars, around 23 degree hill climb / 150 to 200 km range /that's over 100 miles) / 25 to 45 kmh speed
    6) and one of the smallest and best city commuters with dedicated backpacks the Kingsong KS-14S : 1300 dollars / around 30 degree (57%) hill climb / 60 to 80 km range / 20 to 30 kmh speed / backpack carry
    In 2018 Unicycles > ebikes > bikes

    I did this ride about 10 years ago It nearly killed me as I'm not a long distance rider. And the big climb near the end, I think only a handful out of about 350 riders managed. I have an E mtb now. So much fun.

    Hi Rob
    First of all, fabulous effort, and money raised for a genuine great cause! Well done mate. Rob if I may ask you maybe to do a film/topic on this in the future, I trust in you because this is what you do, and I know you'll be balanced.
    I noticed 2-3 areas for future topics that I'd never thought of before, until I watched this film right the way through.
    1) please don't feel guilty for not totally struggling through that route, My understanding is that it wasn't just for non Ebikes, please correct Me if I have that wrong. You we're 100% not cheating! Them guys have the same choice/options has you. It's not a race, but if it was, it's certainly not a race to the bottom!
    2) and with respect Rob, you yourself maybe also guilty of this one. These off the shelf eMTB's, that are £2000-£3000 upto £10,000 to buy, and you stated that you achieved 42miles from the battery. My home built eMTB achieves 130 miles from My battery! For a build price of just under £2000. Which is the precursor for point 3.
    3) lots of non Ebike riders look down on Ebikes, cheating, ect! But I have noticed from My own experiences. You guys with off the shelf premium eMTB's look down on us home builders in just the same way? And usually it's because our bikes tend to be more powerful and derestricted! Well yours are more powerful than the non Ebikes, in just the same way! but in a legal environment, Can you see some similarities? But this is where it gets a tad muddy, a very large percentage of off the shelf eMTB riders, tell Me they've chipped/de-ristricted their off the shelf eMTB's? So if that was their moral basis for looking down on Me/kit home builder, well surely they've just burst their own balloon themselves. And last but not least Rob, to come back to the very basics. I noted that lots of riders on this (Ride) from London to Brighton were actually walking a large percent of the route? It's meant to be a ride isn't it? Are they now also cheating? Just to end on this, for the record. My personal view is that not one single person was, or is ever cheating on this subject.
    Cheers Rob and maybe something in there for a future topic?

    Just subscribed, great videos! Been living in the Austrian Alps (Zillertal) for the last seven years. Heading towards 58, and have been using leg power until now. We commonly ride 1000/1500hm on a ride and I have hit the tipping point of pain expenditure vs ride reward. I live at 1200hm and directly out the front door you can ride to over 2500hm! Tried a few ebikes last year (I was completely against them) but realised they really make sense here. I tried a couple of KTM's and a Giant. My 2020 Levo Comp FSR (alu) 700wh arrives in 2 weeks. Everything is so much superior except for maybe the groupsets which really aren't that much of an issue (excluding brakes) on an emtb. Durability counts here in my opinion. They are undoubtedly expensive, but I believe that little extra will be worth paying for. The ride feel is so much more in keeping with a std mtb in that you still work hard but the progressive assistance just helps overcome the additional physical exertion (exhaustion!!). The Brose motor is certainly much better v the competition. Keep up the good work, look forward to the next video!

    We did a ride yesterday with my 2018 Levo and the new 2019 Levo comp, and yes, the 2019 was alarmingly noisy, and for what, so we can move faster getting to the trail? For 99%, maybe 99.9% of the time, we couldn't put that much power to work for us, and we were riding steep uphill terrain that analog bikes get pushed up.

    I bought my Levo Expert this past September. @500 miles in the motor crapped out. It was replaced with the 2020 motor. More power👍. Im 237#. On the 2019 motor 29 miles, 27 miles then 18 miles before it broke. @ 4800 feet of elevation change with all 3 rides. Now twice ridden @32 miles with 500 feet of elevation change and had @ 3 bars left on the battery. It runs considerably smoother than the 2019 motor. I'll drop more comments as I test the range in the foothills in the months to come.
    Happy Trails!🚲

    The 2019 motor seems to be much noisier than the 2018 motor, and way too noisy for me. One of the main reasons why the 2017-18 Levos stood out from all the other e-bikes was the very quiet motor. I also question the move from 27.5 to 29 - to my mind a 27.5 with 2.6 or 2.8 tyres is the perfect setup for e-bikes.

    • @RobRidesEMTB

    I'm not sure how I feel about an e bike when cycling. I enjoy accomplishing a ride and distance with my own legs, but I guess there are benefits to it. You can travel further than you would without the assist.
    Maybe one day when I'm a bit older I'll get one.

    The key is to use the Control app and mess with % on the Eco and Trail modes and stay out of Turbo at the 100/100 settings or reduce it. I find by doing this that after 3 hours of push on trails I am worn out before the bike battery. I have the Expert so I have a long life anyways. My thoughts and I am a pretty big guy.

    35% of 500watts is like 175watts a that's pretty decent power assist. Range is so subjective with ebikes. When we say range we should include our condition after. Like I got 40miles with minimal exhaustion or I got 40 miles and I was completely beat. 175watts really is like having a second rider with you..

    Here in Colorado (USA) there is a lot of push back on electric bikes. If we can't make these machines quiet, then we have a bigger battle getting them on the trails. Even my 2018 Levo is too noisy in my opinion yet sometimes I can barely hear it (thank You Specialized). Other trail users do not want to hear our electric bikes buzzing by. I DON'T WANT TO HEAR MY ELECTRIC BIKE BUZZING. I would like the engineers at all the electric motor companies to understand how important this point is. This is a huge obstacle that needs to be overcome and Brose or specialized is going the other way. I don't need more power, I need a super quiet motor #1. I know this is a first world problem , but I want the new Levo with a 700 watt battery, and I want it to be quiet in the wood. IS THAT ASKING TOO MUCH? The answer is NO. Please get to work engineers. This is what you do, solve the problem, please. Now go make it happen.

      Hi Tom as someone that has been involved with engineering most of my life ,I understand we want quiet motors . However motors will always whine and gears and belts will always make noise .The only way to make them quieter is sound proofing but that adds bulk and weight . There is always a pay off . I've got a Bosch and a lot of the time I can't even hear it .

      I totally agree Tom. I live up in Whistler, BC and I chose the Kenevo with the Brose motor because of the quiet belt drive. I tried the Bosch CX and the Shimano Steps E8000 and HATED the noise they made. Other riders could hear me coming from a mile away. My Kenevo is nice and quiet though. Other riders barely hear me coming which is ideal. Plus, I try to be really respectful. When I pass someone I go really slowly in Eco mode, give them a nice hello and then blast off after I'm well past them out of sight.

    • @dirkharvey
      @dirkharvey 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Amen! The Kenevo is amazing and will be the bike I buy. I just demo'd one for a week and am sold. The greater range is enticing on the new Levo, but last year I did monster rides on the 18' Levo, 22.2 mi 4,684ft and was stoked with what it could do.

    • @Logansix
      @Logansix 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      In Germany is noise no problem. But for myself I want a silent engine. The Brose is quieter than Bosch and Shimano. But for more Power, I accept a little more noise. The price for the new Levos is very high.

    Hi Rob, I think you could have got more than 42 miles out of a 500Wh battery on ECO - especially seeing the weight savings on the 2019 bike - I have a 2018 Turbo Levo Carbon and with a 504Wh battery I managed 54 miles (25% Assistance on ECO) on Saturday with a couple of hills worth of Turbo assistance. I have 2 x 504Wh batteries, but only used one as a range test and kept the other as a spare just in case i ran out. going on the premis I think the 2018 bike and 2 batteries is good for @ 90 miles on ECO. Would like to try a 2019 model, but it does sound a bit louder than my 2018 model from the video feedback..

    42 miles on Eco. So what does it do on Turbo, Rob? I understand that a rider is generally going to switch between modes to get the most out of the battery and performance, but it’s not as much as I was expecting. It seems mad that a potential buyer has to buy a spare battery having shelled out £5k+ on a bike like this (approx £500-£1099 extra). I understand that they are getting better all the time and there has to be a trade off, but is there any difference for the 2019 or even the 2020 models, in regards to battery life, or as you say, is it a matter of tuning?
    Anyway, well done on for the charity ride. It’s a great cause!

    My mate has the 2018 version..... paid NZ$10k for his. He's was nagging me to get one but I couldn't justify 10k when I had a perfectly good 2013 GT Sensor in the shed. I converted mine to E with a Bafang 1000w BBSHD mid drive motor for $2100. The crazy thing is he says mine is lighter. He should know as he does the hardcore enduro thing and often has to hump his bike over stock fences. Mine has 9 levels of PAS compared to his 3, 160nm of torque compared to his 60, batteries are about the same. He has better clearance than me at the motor 350mm compared to my 250mm. He has 180mm front shock while mine is 130mm. I have gear sensing he doesn't. I have a finger throttle he doesn't. Basically he's paid a lot of coin (about 7k more than me in the final wash) for very little. The clearance is a biggy but I couldn't justify spending the bucks to get another 100mm off the ground. I'll adapt. The reality is the GT was a good bike in its day and still is. The Bafang only robbed me of 30mm of clearance. I'm still tweaking mine (half the fun). In the next few months I'll get it running like a Swiss watch.

I hope Haibike Flyon bikes have the ability to change the battery, because from the side profile pics we have on the internet it is hard to say, tube looks to be totally closed, I don't see any opening on the bottom like Levo has or on the side like some other bikes have. Do you maybe know this, cause you've seen them live, or maybe even asked this on Eurobike show?
