I always had a love/hate relationship with this line. When I was younger and heard guys act like it was the most bad ass line in history I could help but laugh at the results had any of them tried it out on a significant other. As I got older I could appreciate what you are saying. He was telling her upfront how he felt. In a bit of a cocky way, sure. It fits Han’s (fake-it-til you make it) smuggler personality. Like you observed his line was just letting her know that he knew. Just look at the way he looks at her as he goes into the carbon freeze. The look alone says it all.

@@michaelwhite3607 Not enough of these reactors observe their facial expressions. For example, Luke saying he wants to become a Jedi like his father. Of course he’s traumatized. You can see a little rejection in his face as he turns his head. He’s just seen his uncle burnt to a crisp. When Obi-Wan turns toward a new path, I saw trauma in Luke’s face.

AND, because Han has been telling her for the last three years through his actions how he feels. When she met him, he was only looking out for himself. But he joined the cause, he has been showing her that he is growing into a better person, trying to become "worthy" of her notice. Hell, we saw it in THIS movie; he had his clearance to leave, he and Chewie could have gotten out. But Han heard the Command Center had been hit, (he straight up tells her that's why he's there) and from context we realize that he a.) called the command center transport to find out if she was on board, and b.) went down there himself to make sure she was all right when the transport reported that they didn't have her. When she pulls away to get to another station--because she is a til-the-bitter-end kind of leader, we hear "Imperial troops have entered the base! Imperial troops have---[static]. And this time when Han goes to her, it's with concern and softness, taking her arm and saying, "Come on, that's it." And the look they share...she is scared now (the Imps HAVE tortured her before, after all) and he's gently holding her arm in a supportive way. And this time she relents.
And he goes WITH her the whole way. The corridor to go to the Falcon goes in the OPPOSITE direction; he could have just sent her on her way and he could have gone his way, and maybe she would have been buried in that corridor collapse, who knows?
Yes they argue a LOT, and there is all this verbal sparring, but Han Solo strikes me as the type of guy who wouldn't take the time to argue with someone if he didn't give a damn about them; he would blow them off and have nothing to do with them.
AND...we don't know how long they were on the way to Cloud City. Long enough for Luke to train as a Jedi, for sure, and I am going to assume that takes more than a week. We don't know what he might have admitted to some night. At least, I like to think MAYBE he dropped a few hints, lol.

As a non-American, star wars isn't a part of our culture. Neither did we grow up with them, nor did the previous generation.
While I kept hearing about it sporadically through school, it was only in college did I get the chance to watch it. I finished the trilogy in a single night, and I was so fascinated by it, that I did a re-run twice within the same week.

Dunno if it was said but the first sequence with the monster attacking Luke was added because Mark Hamill was in a bad car accident which left him with some scars on his face so they added it in a way to explain them in the movie part of his face had gauze covering the right side of his face to also cover the scars for the first few shots

Luke’s entire right side of his face is hidden in bandages, supposedly hiding the scars left from his car accident two years before filming Empire in 1979. Therefore, this entire sequence with the Wampa and bandages and injuries was written to explain the scarring on Hamill’s face.
In the Blu-Ray commentary of The Empire Strikes Back, George Lucas denies these claims and rumors, stating they added the scenes to build suspense. However, late actress Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia) claimed that the car accident is why the Wampa scene was added. Mark Hamill, on the other hand, has never addressed it.

You will appreciate this from a writing standpoint. There's actually a lot going on in this film that they don't explicitly point out, or rub your nose in - it just works as symbolism. All of the traits that Luke possesses in Episode IV fail him in this film. For example: it's getting dark so Han wants to go back in, but Luke stays out and gets attacked (a failure of being too brave). He leads the charge against the Imperial AT-ATs but loses his gunner, then his ship (a failure of being too impulsive). He rushes off from Dagobah to save his friends, even though it's a trap (a failure of being too loyal). When Yoda says the cave only contains "what you take with you," he's basically telling Luke this. Luke's failures are the results of the things he brings to the table. To "become a Jedi, like his father" (his promise from the first film), he needs to become a different kind of hero than the person he is. So at the very end, when Vader says "I am your father," that's when Luke realizes his two goals are totally incompatible. To become a Jedi like his father, he has to become Vader. It is literally his lowest point in the narrative, because after that, he falls out the bottom of the floating city.

3:30 "That does not look like 1980..."
    It is!
That beast Luke is riding is an action figure, stop motion animated a frame at a time. The same one that's been there since 1980.
The snowspeeders searching for Luke and Han the next morning are the same miniatures they built in a shop 40 years ago, double exposed onto film stock in a dark room. (All of the footage had to be cleaned up and color corrected after the fact because film degrades, but they didn't shoot or build any new FX elements, the remastering was mostly to restore it to what it originally looked like.) The walker battle, to this day one of the most stunning FX action sequences ever, is still pretty much exactly the way it looked in 1980.
The bulk of the added CG was in the Cloud City sequence. The shot you guys called out with the ships weaving through the buildings was completely new. During a lot of the interior scenes, windows with views of the city outside were added.
"Where ARE we?" The Hoth exteriors were shot in Norway. Norwegian troops were outfitted with costumes and used as extras. Interiors were shot in sets in London. None of Leia's scenes were outside so she had no shooting days in Norway but Carrie visited them for fun.
40:30 "It's romantic foreshadowing!" "Well yeah if you want to get nerdy about it..."
The line as written was actually "I love you too" and they shot it like that and everyone agreed that it sucked. So they shot a few more takes with Harrison improvising something else each time and "I know" is what they went with. Similar to the unplanned shooting of the swordsman in Raiders, It has since become an iconic Harrison Ford moment.

That "I know" from Han got a huge laugh when it came out - a little humor breaking the tension. Harrison Ford told Lucas he thought saying it back wouldn't be Han's style at all - so they decided on the cocky, very Han-like reply to Leia's pronouncement.

27:24 If I remember my Star Wars lore correctly, English in the Star Wars Universe is called Galactic Basic and very much like the English language has evolved over time. Yoda is so old that when he learned Galactic Basic they were using a different form of it. Essentially Yoda is speaking using an outdated version of Galactic Basic. It would be like if someone learned English during the Elizabethan Era and still speaks using that style.
That’s just what I was told, I don’t know how accurate that actually is.

Jacqui already knows about Anakin Skywalker so she links that up immediately with the discussion between the Emperor and Darth Vader but we as an audience not knowing about Anakin were shocked by that line as we wondered how Luke would survive! And then another 3 year wait to find out whether is was true or not! I think I went to the theater at least 3 or 4 times just to make sure I hadn't missed a hint in the dialogue about the answer. It was great to see this without the spoiling going on despite the agony of the wait.

Luke is the "hero" of the quest and the adventure, but R2 is the *main character,* especially if you count all six or all nine of the episodes as one big story. The movies in fact may be his telling of events and the crawling text are his own "words" (as translated by 3PO)
The main character doesn't always have to be the hero (Mad Max Fury Road, Big Trouble in Little China, etc)

  • @tranya327
    @tranya327 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

When Vader talks to the Emperor in 'Empire Strikes Back,' what's going on is complicated. My read is this:
    1) The Emperor IS NOT telling Vader anything that Vader doesn't already know!! Note that Vader said, in an earlier part of the movie, "...and I'm sure Skywalker is with them." So Vader already knew that someone named 'Skywalker' was a Big Person in the Rebel alliance, and he probably already knew that this Skywalker was THE PERSON who destroyed the Death Star. Vader also knew that when he (Vader) was attempting to shoot down Skywalker's X-Wing in 'A New Hope' that, "The Force is strong with this one." So, the Force is unusually strong with someone, who happens to have the name, 'Skywalker' - and 'Skywalker' is the same name that Vader had before he was Vader. So, Vader already knew he had a son, before he spoke to the Emperor.
    2) If Vader already knew, why did he conceal that fact, and act surprised when the Emperor mentioned it? "How is that possible?" The answer is, that while Vader serves the Emperor, Vader also •hates• the Emperor, and has a different agenda than the Emperor. Vader wants to rescue Luke from death, and to kill the Emperor, and then rule the galaxy with his son - the only family he has left (that Vader knows about). That means turning Luke to the Dark Side. By contrast, the Emperor wants to remove Luke as a threat. That could mean destroying Luke, but when Vader suggests turning Luke to the dark side, the Emperor goes along with it: If Luke is converted to the Dark Side, the Emperor can "trade up" and replace Vader with "a new apprentice, one far younger and more powerful."
    3) The Vader-Emperor scene was changed from the original release of "The Empire Strikes Back," and this is one instance where the change is a vast improvement. In the original scene, the dialogue between Vader and the Emperor was sufficiently vague as to confuse me: "Anakin Skywalker" was never mentioned. So when the Emperor, in the original scene says, "The son of Skywalker must not become a Jedi," I at first thought: "Well, LUKE is the only Skywalker we know from these movies. So, 'the son of Skywalker, must mean the son of Luke. But, Luke doesn't have a son, so what's going on?" The dialogue of the revised scene eliminates this confusion.
So, when Vader talks to the Emperor in the (improved, revised) version, the version you watched, both Vader and the Emperor are "scheming past one another." Both men want a DIFFERENT final outcome, and while both want to turn Luke to the dark side, both want to use Luke for a different final purpose.

The reason the lights are still on when they destroyed the Hoth generators was because they were the SHIELD generators, which prevents bombardment from space and spaceships from landing in the compound from above.
Until the shield is down, they HAVE to attack on the surface (walkers). That's why when the walker driver is targeting the generator he says "Lord Vader, the shields will be down momentarily, you may begin your landing."

"I know" is actually an ad lib by Harrison. Apparently, they took several takes of Harrison saying "I love you too" (that was the original script) and no one was satisfied with any of them so they just told Harrison to improvise. When asked about, Harrison said he felt that was more in character for Han.
Also, they actually DIDN'T know Harrison would be returning. Harrison was not contracted for the third movie and he vocally made it known that he felt Han's character arc was complete. That's why they ended it the way they did, and it's also why Lando was introduced.

@8:50 The Hoth scenes were filmed at the Hardangerjøkulen Glacier in Norway.
I saw this in theatres when I was 8. The biggest thing I remember wasn't even the outcry at the "I am your father" line, but rather the three years afterwards before we got a sequel. Remember, this was pre-internet. There was debate whether the line was true or if Vader was lying to manipulate Luke.

Surprisingly enough, "Rogue One" isn't a reference to the movie. It's the call sign for Wedge Antilles, who is the best pilot in the Rebellion (outside of Luke).
As far as when it came out, nobody could believe the ending (both the reveal and the fact it doesn't end happily). Movies just didn't end poorly for the heroes.

The speeder shots are original footage. But in the original release there was a slight transparency of the cockpit matted over the exterior view. In the remastering work the speeder scenes were cleaned up, but the footage is original. It only looks CGI because they digitized it to clean up the footage. So it’s still practical effects with digital matting.

They couldn't get the Wampa (Yeti) suit to work. You only see it's arm and it's face in a close up in the original.
There was a sequence in the script in which a pack of them attack Echo Base before The Empire does and they manage to trap one of them behind a blast door. There's an unused shot that they actually took in the battle scene where 3PO rips a sign off a door and runs away and then the stormtroopers open it and are immediately grabbed by the Wampa inside.

I believe that the story behind George Lucas's choice to freeze the Hon Solo character was because Harrison Ford refused to sign a Multi-Film contract so he needed a way to write him out of the script if needed. The more you look into the Production of this movie you find a story directed in equal parts by the Writers and the realities of the industry.

  • @VanArchon

I loved Jacqui's reference to Dark Helmet just as Sam was drinking coffee, considering that one scene in Spaceballs. Tidbits time: The opening scene of every single movie from episode 1 to 9 (and Rogue One) has at least one spaceship flying in space over/in front of a planet so start looking out for that. The taun-tauns (tawn-tawn) were stop-motion miniatures and the snowspeeders had some CGI in the initial flyover scenes but were mostly still the original miniatures. Those big ships were Imperial Class Star Destroyers, and that was Vader's personal flagship, the Executor, an Executor-class Super Star Destroyer. As Vader is Force choking Admiral Ozzel, Vader refers to the other officer as *Captain* Piett at the start of the conversation before he calls him *Admiral* Piett at the end of it. Instant field promotion, don't fuck it up. In the scene between Vader and the Emperor in the original theatrical version, the Emperor was a composite between actress Marjorie Eaton in a sculpted mask, with her eyes superimposed by a chimpanzee's, and voiced by Clive Revill. Aside from the change to Emperor Palpatine, Cloud City is the first time in this movie where there were significant CGI changes/additions, particularly exterior shots and the "cloud cars" (the ones that first escorted the Millennium Falcon on arrival). Hamill's reaction to the big reveal was performed based on what he knew it was going to be (as only he, George Lucas, and director Irvin Kershner knew before filming it), even though he couldn't hear the delivery over the sound of the wind machines. Oh and the city was actually named "Cloud City", on the planet Bespin.

About Leia's Nerf herder insult to Han, Nerfs are animals kinda like goats/sheeps, a smaller version of the big banthas that the sand people ride. In a video game you take them into a herd house and generate food with those.
So in essence, Leia who was raised as royalty insults Han by treating him of a dirty, ugly stupid pedantic peasant...

Vader was already searching for Luke. He knew. A lot of people seem to miss that the scenes between Vader and the Emperor are showing us that Vader is planning to betray him. He straight up says it at the end - that was his plan the whole time. So when he convinces the Emperor that turning Luke to the dark side is more valuable than destroying him, Vader's real motive is to team up with Luke so they can destroy the Emperor. Conversely, that is also probably the moment that the Emperor decides that he will just pit them against each other until only one is left as his apprentice.

What I mean by that is that he was created by Jim Henson and Frank Oz which means Yoda is right at home with Kermit, Piggy, Fozzie, and the rest of the gang lol. When making Empire Strikes Back, George Lucas called up Jim Henson to ask for help creating Yoda and Jim Henson turned to Frank Oz and the two of them did the job. Frank Oz even gave life to Yoda in the movies which means that Frank was hiding somewhere controlling Yoda and, if I'm not mistaken, Frank Oz also spoke for Yoda.

I’ve seen many reactions to my fave childhood movies and I love the humor and fresh perspective from you both. Also note that although the movies were enhanced many of the special effects are still the practical ones from the originals. With a few notable exceptions which fans have a love/hate relationship with, there was more cleanup and enhancement than making entirely new cgi sequences. Industrial Light and Magic is the effects studio George Lucas created because no at the time could yet do what he needed for Star Wars. They revolutionized special effects and continue to do so to this day. If you saw the original cuts you’d be shocked that most of the effects are pretty much what you see today. Keep up the great work!

1:00 "it wasn't released as Episode IV, it was just released as Star Wars",
Yes and no - as a child when Star Wars was first released we were enthralled as the words Episode IV scrawled across our the screen. After the movie we were desperate to find out what happened in the first three Episodes. Obviously we were gutted to learn that we might never find out!
That excitement was obviously Lucas' (economic) hope, even if he originally just intended the words to be a shout-out to the classic movie serials (Flash Gordon, etc) which had similar titles on a weekly basis.

Wonderful outfit first.. and not as many "enhancements" in this one compared to A New Hope, mainly cloud city. All the walkers and tan tans were miniature stop motion, and even some of the asteroids were potatoes. And one of the main reason Luke was attacked by the snow monster, is Mark Hamill was in an accident before filming and got a scar on his face, so they had to figure out something. Good way to start age morning, fun show and fun pretty faces/people.

Jackie, this movie was the capitalist of so much psychological development in my young life. And way beyond the "no I'm your father". Me and my friends debated everything from Atlanta with jerk for betraying his friends. To Luke running off impetuously to help his friends rather than stay and complete his training. Luke's failure in the cave, "you only bring that what you need." I learned about female flirtation and playing hard to get, or hating you when they like you. So many life lessons in this movie that sparked ideas that would be the basis of many perceptions I formed going forward. So to say you missed out the spoiler free version, girl, you missed a lot.

Sam and Jacqui are back!!! YEA!!!!
    - 3:25 - Imperial Star Destroyer is the proper term...and, yes, they are bad-ass. Vader's Super Star Destroyer flagship, 'Executor' is 19 kilometers long (if it landed on Manhatten Island, it would stretch from Tribeca to Harlem)...and it is my favorite ship in the entire franchise.
    - 4:12 - The Abominable Snowman...🤣🤣🤣 Actual name...Wampaa.
    - 8:49 - All of the exterior Hoth scenes were filmed in a glacier area around Finse, Norway.
    - 17:08 - Well, he can't die, yet...that's Julian Glover, who would later work for Lucas again in 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade' as Walter Donovan, and would play Grand Maester Pycelle in 'Game of Thrones'.
    - 21:17 - It is his Meditation Chamber. Yeah...not James Earl Jones.🤣🤣🤣
    - 24:45 - A little background of off-stage shenanigans...Carrie Fisher, before she passed away wrote a final book detailing her experiences filming 'Star Wars' called 'The Princess Diarist'. In the book, she told about how she found a bunch of journals she kept during the filming of the first film and what happened. In the many years since then, partly due to her own problems with substance abuse, she had forgotten that she had had an affair...with Harrison Ford. Yep...Han and Leia are off-screen, too. Unfortunately, the affair was brief for many reasons...Harrison was married and the marriage was on the rocks anyway, and the age difference was pretty big (she was 19, he was 34). It really informs the chemistry they had on screen. Anyway, she told Harrison she was writing the book, and the first word out of his mouth was "Lawyer!". He relented, mainly because by the time the book was written (between Episodes VII & VIII of the Sequel Trilogy), Ford was with his third and current wife (actress Calista Flockhart) and the years kinda made it all a moot point. The cast was always very close...and got even closer with the Sequel Trilogy, due to all of them getting older and being back in the galaxy again.
    - 26:18 - Yes! Yes, Emperor Sheev Palpatine is indeed a HUGE douche canoe! 💯💯💯
I was 8 when this came out. When I saw this one it was at the same theater I saw the first one, but with my summer YMCA camp. They rented out the theater for a matinee during the week, and every kid was glued to the screen. It was amazing...and the uproar of the "No. I am your father." was huge!!! I love the Original Trilogy, with my favorite being Episode IV. And yeah...waiting three years until 1983 for 'Return of the Jedi' SUCKED!!! There was no internet, fan theories were hard to come by, and it was years before any of the films made it to the fledgling cable industry. I think Episode IV finally debuted on HBO in 1983, six years after its release.

Han didn’t say it back because he didn’t need to. Han has been saying it for three years. In that time Han stayed with the Rebellion for her. He risked everything for her. The entire point of the first act of the movie was Han being frustrating that Leia didn’t reciprocate his feelings for him. Not that she didn’t have any.
By all means, Leia was head over heels for Han after he chose to stay with the rebellion. But, she is too committed to the cause to allow herself to feel romantically vulnerable and Han knows that. That’s why he was teasing her so ruthlessly. The bounty Hunter mentioned in the beginning of the film was his excuse to leave. Since the point was made; she doesn’t love him like he loves her. But even then, when the empire came he stayed with Leia until the very end. “I know” is Han’s way of saying “You admitted it. I won”. I bet it’s a comforting thought when your about to die.
