You are right, Pandit ji focussed a lot on purity of Raag and, so he has been criticised for missing the bhav of words. Where as Girija Devi ji was mainly thumri singer and she made a remarkable mark in semi classical (equally difficult). Also, Banaras gharana is par excellent at thumris.
