It was an awe-inspiring fusion of intelligence and passion that perhaps separated Panditji from other classical vocalists who dogmatically stuck to their ''Gharana'' culture with a rigidity that possibly inhibited creativity.
Born on February 4, 1922 at Gadag in Dharwad district of Karnataka, his journey to the stardom in the world of Hindustani music was just as dramatic as it was arduous for one who decided to run away from home at a tender age of 11, in quest of finding a ''Guru'' to learn music.

पंडित भीमसेन जोशी हे भारतीय शास्त्रीय संगीताचे कोहिनूरच होते. शास्त्रीय संगीत एका विशिष्ट वर्गापुरतेच मर्यादीत होते. मात्र पंडितजींनी या मर्यादा ओलांडून संगीताला सामान्य माणसाच्या जवळ नेले. जाणकार तसेच सर्वसामान्य दोघांनीही त्यांच्या संगीताला भरभरून दाद दिली, हेच त्यांचे सर्वात मोठे योगदान होते.
