This episode has some of my favorite scenes in the show. Maze spent thousands of years thinking of herself as a monster and now an innocent child accepts her for who she is. Linda's reaction to finding out that Lucifer was telling her the literal truth is priceless and really opens up the show.
AHHHHH such a good episode. Love love the Dr. Linda reveal but also the Maze reveal! Maze and Trixie are so wholesome in this and Leslie’s acting with that little sigh/exhale/laugh whatever you call it when Trixie goes ‘cool!’ gets me every time.
Trixie accepting Mazikeen's real face is priceless. And Linda coming face-to-face with the experience that has driven others toward insanity is novel as well.
My favorite part of this episode when Linda says at the beginning that her door is always open and then at the end Lucifer leaves it partly open. This show does that a lot where something from the beginning of this episode comes full circle.
I love that the very last line of the series is a nice way to recap the entire show. There’s an underlying consistency across the series that I cherish, even if season 3 gets a little meh.
This is indeed my favourite episode of the show, both for Trixie's reaction to Mazakeen;s true form (and Maze's wonder that a human was not only not scared of her but actually enthusiastically loved how she looked), and for Linda's reaction to Lucifer's true form (and Lucifer's sadness at having broken Linda and knowing that there he was nothing he could do except leave). Hell and Earth finally colliding in two very different ways that will indeed shape what is to come.
Its a top 10 episode. This show is a family therapy drama disguised as a police show. It's why we love linda, among many reasons. Show is firing on all cylinders now. Cant wait for the next one.
A few things - the girl at the bar saying it’s not your fault seems like a throwaway line but it really it’s important for Lucifer’s character. I really like how he tells Linda to shut the door and then later leaves it open for her after he leaves at the end. Also, really love how the lighting of Linda’s face when the car goes by lights up at the same as her reaction changes… beautiful
I always felt the girl at the bar was supposed to be a message from God. Just the scene has a God scripted feel. He sees a man who looks like Uriel at the same time he is told “not your fault.”
One of my favourite episodes of the whole show. The 2 best scenes in this episode also make the last more heartbreaking. Maze, constantly seeking approval for who she is, shows Trixie her true face and is accepted without fear or judgement, and looks so relieved. Lucifer, on the other hand, doesn't have the same experience with Linda. As others have said, the throwaway "It's not your fault", and "You don't want vengeance, you want punishment" and "my door's always open" build depth to the whole story in this episode. Amazing piano version of Unforgiven played by Tom Ellis, too. Fantastic reaction, Anna 💗
I think the face isn’t just an appearance. It affects you on a deeper psychological level that reveals itself as undeniable truth. A shapeshifter just making a fave wouldn’t have the same impact that Lucifer’s face does. When you see his face, you aren’t trying to figure out what you’re looking at. You just seem to know. I think that’s what makes it so devastating.
I always saw it as the realization of the Divine actually being REAL and all that entails. And given she was helping him, she has to wrestle with whether she is evil herself, and all that.
I always felt Linda was so scared she couldn't move. I'm sure she eventually snapped out of it, then spent the entire night processing not only what she saw, but all the things Lucifer said to her in light of this new knowledge . . .
It was the inhale of breathe at the acceptance of Trixie that really gets me in that episode. Such a small gesture gives such an insight in to Mazikeen' growth and wanting to be accepted. What a different reaction although in very different circumstances both the Dr & Trixie had when faced with the truth.
This is definitely one of my favorite Lucifer episodes. I love the Maze and Trixie stuff, especially because of the extreme relief on Maze's face when she reveals herself to Trixie and isn't shunned. Trixie loves her even more, and Maze looks so relieved that Trixie doesn't think of her as a monster, which is really beautiful. And that ties in well with what Lucifer's going through, how he feels like a monster for what he did to Uriel, and how he must feel when he reveals himself to Linda, who reacts with shock and fear. It's such a devastating moment for him as a character, and I LOVE that the show decided to go there. When I first saw this episode, I thought for sure they'd prolong it some more, not having Lucifer actually show his face to anyone from the main cast for another season or two at least. So I was stunned when he showed his face to Linda, and I was so excited at the possibilities that open up with her knowing. If, of course, she can get past the shock and fear, and hopefully doesn't go insane like so many do. But you'll have to see what happens next! Can't wait for your reaction!!
13:58 In this show angels have a physical form, "Mom" doesn't. She is a celestial being and didn't bother to make herself (or ask god to) make her a physical form. So in order to come to earth she had to inhabit a fresh corpse.
This isnt my favorite episode - but its up there... I loved Maze's reaction to Trixie - how relieved she was when she was accepted. Also Linda's reaction to Lucifer, her lack of acceptance... I guess general freak out, that the world isnt as scientific as she imagined.
I saw the clip of Lucifer playing Unforgiven and Amenadiel's speech. I'd been sad-scrolling when I came across it. I decided to watch the whole series after that. Might be a bit of a trauma dump, but this series and the fan community actually helped turn me out of a s****dal spiral after the death of my sister. All because of this episode.
Oh, man, I forgot that the Lucifer-Linda reveal, the Maze-Trixie reveal, and the "homeless magician" line were all in the same episode! Classics, all of them! 😂
The writing on this show just keeps getting stronger and stronger, as do the performances by the cast. The choice of music is also a huge plus (I've bought several of the songs on iTunes). For me, it's the best TV series ever made. Oh, and great review!
When Lucifer shows his face, it not just an appearance. It’s a feeling also. Linda doesn’t just see red skin, she feels what Lucifer is. It’s like the guy who stole Lucifer’s wings. Even A Man Named Dale (never can spell it) and Goddess don’t see the face unless Lucifer shows it.
This reaction is everything I was hoping for and I'm not sure this is my favorite episode but its one of the top 5 for sure. One of my favorite small touches about this episode is that at the beginning Linda told him her door was always open for him & when he left her office, he left the door open a bit. I also love the reaction Maze got from Trixie to her true face but its heartbreaking for Lucifer that he didn't get that....totally understandable why Linda didn't react the same as Trixie did but still. So many good questions & I can't comment because I don't want to spoil anything.
All your questions will be answered, some only by the end of season 6 😇 This episode was great, Trixie accepts Maze for what she is and Linda found out Lucifer is the devil.
The reveal isn't about how "scary" it looks. It is about the realization that it provides. You live your life with only belief and faith, never proof. Imagine the existential crisis that gives anyone. Her world changed at that moment and most people aren't ready for that. Most people would "break" until they have time to process things. Come to terms with things.
Lucifer is not different. Lucifer is divine. Imagine the site of anything divine to a normal human. It would be shattering to our psyche. Any of us from the most religious to a flat out atheist. The sight of something that peels the curtain back on our reality would shake us all to the core.
I'm not entirely sure about that. I think it still depends on how our psyche was influenced before. I was raised an atheist and still am. If I imagine that happening to me, it would certainly give me a lot to think about. But I'm not sure it would qualify as "shattering to my psyche", mainly because I lack the religious upbringing that installed some notions of the devil being the incarnation of evil, fear of gods judgement and hell and the like from childhood on. Don't get me wrong though. I would certainly be stunned at least for an hour or so.^^
@@rainerbloedsinn182 Yeah but its not religious in my idea of it. I am thinking of Doctor Who for example. Young candidates for Time Lord are taken and given the chance to look into the "Untampered Schism" or a crack in the fabric of reality where you could see the whole of "The Void". Some went mad and some ran away. Even though this is just fiction this would be mortal eyes looking behind the curtain into the actual reality of everything. That should be more than anyone can take. So is the idea of seeing something divine. Just fiction really.
3:44 "multifunctional" - thanks, finally someone who understands! I get that Chloe is a bit prudish and the whole scene mainly exists for the joke (and to highlight the differences between Maze and Chloe), but I'm always amused by how many reactors are similarly shocked about this as Chloe is. After all, many kids spend some nights sleeping in their parents bed, the same bed that they were conceived in. Perhaps even the same bed, that one of their parents had other partners in. Some people may even do it on the Couch, only to then allow their child to have friends over and sit all together in that very same piece of furniture. So why is that swing so different to so many people?
I'm glad your watching and posting often. Waiting a week for your reaction to these excellent episodes would be torture! Yes, as he said, he's never experienced guilt before.
I always loved this episode, cause it's so realistic I think in the different reactions. A child is like "Cool" to Maze's demon form because children are still innocent, full of wonder, and open to believe, be it God, Santa, the Tooth Fairy, etc. But we as a adults, even if we believe in God, we have lost that child-like innocence, so that's why even if he's not threatening her, Linda knowing the full truth that Lucifer really is the actual Devil.... I think it's so realistic to how reactions would truly be. Both are.
So, like, I was looking on Tubi for something to put on to watch while I was working yesterday, and I saw the 1998 miniseries The Temptations and decided to watch it. Imagine my surprise to see a very young D.B. Woodside (Amenadiel) in it. With a full head of hair! It was kinda surreal. I've also seen him in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, 9-1-1: Lone Star, and more, but he's been bald in everything else I've ever seen him in. With the hair, I almost didn't even recognize him!
Ah, not recognizing someone in an older role. I recently rewatched Farscape... DK, the best friend in the pilot, is played by Murray Bartlett and my brain refused to see him as Frank from Last of Us.
@@ChibiHoshiDragon Yeah, another reactor I watch just started reacting to Farscape and when she read that it was Murray Bartlett, I was shocked. I didn't recognize him either!
I wouldn't say it's my favorite episode, but it's part of my favorite _sequence_ of episodes, which starts with 2x4 (girl's night out) and ends with--well it would probably be spoilerish to say. (Also, get used to mood whiplash, because this season uses a lot of it! 😀) Honestly, I think that without the Maze/Trixie sequence, this ep would have been just _too_ grim. And speaking of Maze/Trixie, "President of Mars" was a callback to when they first met: Trixie mentioned it as one of the things she wanted to be when she grew up.
I love this episode but it's not my favorite. I've always wondered how long Dr. Linda sat in that chair staring a hole in the universe before she came to her senses.
Yes, he called the station chief - because, you know, *_he works for the police..._* 🤦♂ Honestly, I don't understand some of the things you scoff at. Like the part about the suspect having a fake badge. As if it would be difficult for someone to get a mediocre yet passage police badge or that the average person would actually look that close at it if someone flashed said badge or would know how to differentiate it from the real thing. You try to act like you're making these revelatory observations, like you're poking holes in the plot, when you've either ignored something stated outright in the episode or it's something that can be reasonably inferred.....
This episode has some of my favorite scenes in the show. Maze spent thousands of years thinking of herself as a monster and now an innocent child accepts her for who she is. Linda's reaction to finding out that Lucifer was telling her the literal truth is priceless and really opens up the show.

Dr. Linda "Oh crap, it's all real!"
One thing this show does so well is to bring new meaning to the Rolling Stones song "Sympathy For The Devil".
There's an episode later this season called "Sympathy For the Goddess", which is almost certainly a deliberate reference to that song.
Lucifer never canceled an appointment with Linda because he viewed an appointment as a promise, and he never breaks his word.
"Why would he not try to take her."
Because she has a gun trained on him?
I think more likely because he wanted to be caught and punished, hence the clue he left behind at the first crime scene.
