- Many objects and buildings in Liberty City you will find in New York, because Liberty City in GTA 4 is a copy of New York.
I made a comparison of these two cities, but instead of real pictures of New York, I used Google Earth.

I live in new york and back when GTA4 came out, i went looking for the skate park underneath an overpass in queens and that shit was actually there

Let’s remember, GTA 4 is a scaled down version of NYC. But I LOVE it. I play it every single day just to explore this never ending city. I hope Rockstar make a bigger scaled Liberty city in the future

This video just makes me appreciate level designers so much. I can't imagine how much work is put into putting all the real life buildings together and creating a whole city that not only feels great gameplay-wise, but also can be seen as a replica of an actual real life city. Gigantic props to the level designers of GTA, but also level designers in general.

As someone who lives in New York City, this is pretty accurate. Yet again, Rockstar has an office in NYC hence why Liberty City looks exactly like NYC.
Most of the assets are actually made by Rockstar North in Scotland, as is the core of the game. The Rockstar North team flew out to NYC a few times to get references and then later on asked Rockstar NY for more data and references, such as traffic patterns, minority groups, population personality, etc

Playing this game in 2008 made me obsessed with NYC and now I’m moving there next month. 12 years makes a huge difference

I knew at that very moment it was where I wanted to spend the rest of my life when I got older. It’s just full of energy. Going from Dallas, Texas to here was just insane. Makes where I came from seem SO boring and lifeless.

Driver Parallel Lines has the best NYC in my opinion, it's scaled down but the map is huge
@@AtheistMorax I think True Crime has the best NYC depiction. Near 1:1 in size and layout and most landmarks. Other boroughs not included aside from as set dressing but they nailed Manhattan. Shame about the jank though.
@@Xegethra True Crime is only a Manhattan map, PL has almost the whole NYC plus New Jersey is also there, just fantastic
@@AtheistMorax Yeah I know, but I think it does a way better Manhattan and the map is overall bigger. Feels like the city it is meant to be. I like Parallel Lines and it's map but nothing beats True Crime in accurate scale.
Maybe that's what's taking gta 6 so long.

It’s like looking at dimensional ripples between two parallel worlds and I guess in a sense... it is since GTA is set in a parallel universe where everything is an exaggerated parody of our own, from crime, to history. to even names of cities and places and so on
It's amazing how rockstar flat out said that they did not want to go for a block for block recreation but it ends up looking very close to the actual city. So many people did not understand like GTA IV was so critically acclaimed at the time, they put so much work into that game that was not seen up until then.

The game looks better than real life! I play this game a lot, it's my favorite and I'm from NY. I work by the Citibank building and that area is so depressing but in the game it's so nice.

One of the gta cities that doesn't feel like a scaled down version. Even though LS looks like LA it's feels so scaled down.
cuz u don't know what buildings is missing and only notice the top skyscrapers, whereas in V they got less buildings and a bit less detail at some points and its more noticable than LC, but I think both are great.

They did such a great job. I live in NYC, so I'm familiar with most of the landmarks shown. The one thing I'm surprised you didn't show was the comparison of Columbia University. They NAILED that perfectly

They did a great job with liberty city, but it’s a little too small. Midtown East is like 6 blocks away from the seaport in Algonquin
maybe gta6 is a better version of this and that's the reason that it's taking longer to make

People complained about infinite draw distance in San Andreas Definitive Edition wayy too much,seems like GTA 4 is even smaller in size.
gta san andreas compressed 2 different states and 3 different cities, it doesn't make sense to go on top of a mountain and be able to see las vegas, nevada, from los angeles, california or see san francisco from los angeles or los vegas. gta 4 also gets away from it because it has so much less empty space that has no life or meaning, where gta sa has a bunch of desert and forest with no meaning apart from immersion
@@i_love_games110Nah, the open world in Gta SA was fun to explore and despite being so small it still had 3 different cities (each with their own weather settings and npc's), alot of villages in the countryside, it still managed to feel more alive than Gta5.
Man, I'm always amazed by how great Rockstar did with IV's map, having to basically downscale different landmarks and sections of NY to a certain size, same goes for V. I just wish the city didn't look so dirty in places, does anyone know if there's revitalization mods for different areas? That would be cool to see.
Just search up street textures mod that’ll downgrade it much to make it look clean.

Every city is frikkin small in both video games,like 1/20 of real life.
The game came out 12 years ago on Xbox 360/PS3. Even then it was pushing hardware limits, part of the reason it ran so poorly on consoles

Gta 4 looks way more lively and not depressing with the brighter color
Everyone acts so impressed with how "accurate" rockstar makes these gta maps but when you really pay attention to the 4D era gta maps they miss loads of buildings/streets that are present irl. Rockstar just adds in a few buildings that are present irl and people are so blown away by it 😂 despite the fact that there's so much more that they could've done to make it more "accurate"

Yeah ı just downloaded it to GTA V to see it's true size ignoring all that fake posts around the internet thanks GTA V's measurement system Algonquin Island(Manhattan) in the beginning of this video is just 2.6km(1.62mi) long and 0.8-0.85km(0.5-0.53mi) wide and whole city is roughly 4.5km across from airport in the west to end Alderney City in the east.To confirm that in GTA IV ı flew a helicopter from one side of the map to the other then looked at the stats to see how many miles it's increased,yes it's true.
I assume that whole islands(big and small) in the map put together is probably no more than 8-9 square km. It's smaller than urban part of GTA V and way too small compared to whole GTA V island.Still third largest map in the series tho.

I'm gonna voice a theory I have. Gonna be "controversial", but whatever. The war in the Middle East happened in the GTA world just like real life, but the placement of the location of the WTC is different in the game. There's no evidence it was there, yet an attack was said to have happened. I'm thinking there were skyscrapers in Castle Gardens that were attacked. It's a construction site in the game, so maybe they're in the process of rebuilding it to its former glory, or another purpose. There's just too much space there for it to have been empty until the construction site was present. Could've been a park, but I think there were buildings there. That said, with how games are built with today's technology, Liberty City doesn't have to be scaled down, or whatever. BUT... I just don't want them to reboot the canon yet again. I'm still cross that the old games (III, VC, San Andreas, LCS, VCS) are a different canon just because of map scalings. That's what retconning is for. They done it plenty of times in the GTA IV era on a small scale, but retconning is retconning.
if you want a life sized liberty city than you might also want a life sized hard drive to fit that
